Life does it and Life's succesful as hell - unfortunately not everyone is as good as him, so it looks kinda weak if other players do it xD
And to the pre-splitting discussion: It depends on the attacker/defender. The attacker has an easier time pre-splitting the units, as he decides when the clash starts. MVP was attacking and still didn't do anything to weaken the effect of fungal.
