Grubby
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/1RUpvST.png)
Manuel "Grubby" Schenkhuizen is one of the most accomplished real time strategy players of all time, winning more than 38 live events, including 6 World Championships. Having a storied past in WarCraft III, Grubby has shown promise recently in StarCraft II, playing in the GSL for the first time this year. He is now living and training in Korea with two time GSTL champions FXO. Grubby is known for his great game knowledge, being a great analytical caster as well as premier player. Grubby still hopes to capture his first international live event.
LucifroN
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/Nui5o4X.jpg)
Pedro "LucifroN" Moreno Duran along side his brother and teammate Juan "Vortix" Moreno Duran are the two best players from Spain and quickly becoming two of the best players from all of Europe. LucifroN broke into eSports near the end of WarCraft III's international scene when it was very difficult for unknown players to make a splash. He won over $10,000 in prize money very quickly without having much of a following or international renown. He capitalized on his success early in the StarCraft II beta winning several international tournaments, but then stopped playing competitively to focus on his academic studies. Recently he has come back in full force. He won the WCS 2012 Spanish Championships and then finished 3rd in the WCS European Finals. He has since gone on to perform well in several international championships, including representing the World in the GSL Korea v World All Stars match.
Illusion*
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/gprnfJH.png)
Chris "Illusion" Lee has shown promise, but yet to meet his full potential as one of North America's top players. He's taken a step back from public play amidst team turmoil. In the past, he has shown top level micro and strategic play. Chris has been training hard in Korea, and he's back to show off his skills at DICE. IPL prides itself on developing new NA players. As an unknown, Scarlett took IPL 4 by storm, and we hope Illusion does the same here after his excellent performance in IPL's Fight Club at Hot Import Nights. Chris has the international experience to be one of these players and we look forward to some upsets at DICE.
*Illusion replaces viOLet due to Visa issues.
Scarlett
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/WGkNjEQ.jpg)
Sasha "Scarlett" Hoshyn came to prominence by winning the Playhem "Sponsor Me!" Tournament that gave her entry into IPL4. She did not waste her free trip as she pulled huge upsets against Terious and Ddoro before losing in the third round in a close match against Oz. She then pulled off a great victory against DeMusliM to knock him out of the tournament. Her most notable feat is winning the Battle.net North American Championship following a win in the same series for Canada. Both were won with relative ease, and she earned a combined $30,000. She has continued to perform well in international events, but has been unable to take down a major international title. With international competition, will Scarlett finally prove she can stand up and make it through multiple championship winning Koreans?
You can catch all the action starting Thursday February 7 at 10:00am!

Wow. Uh, massive prize pool.
|
Huge prizepool for only 4 players, pretty nice invites aswell I think everyone can beat each other on a good day, should be fun
|
AWE HELL YES SCARLETT AND GRUBBY!?!!?! AWESOME! (Though all four of them are pretty dang legit).
|
|
Very nice! What's the split on the prize pool?

sick players and prize pool! Yay IPL, i love these kind of events =D
|
|
Another " hot import nights " type of event, this should be fun. I enjoyed the last one especially the MMA vs DRG bo5 where it went 3-2.
|
gah, i dont know who to root for! really looking forward to this event
|
Someone gets a $1000 trip to Vegas to lose. I'd take that any day.
|
Can I cast this event in Chinese?

Wow pretty nice prize pool for a 4 person tournament. Pretty good field, too, although I think viOLet should be the favorite to take this if he keeps playing as well as he has been.
|
viOLet will likely roll all over the other players then continue to roll his way to the bank, should be fun.
|
Damn, it's these kind of things that are bread and butter for a pro gamer. They're essentially being paid at least $1000 to come and play. They're also players that tend to deliver good games and play for the lategame so hopefully it'll be a good tournament and a good bit of bragging rights for the winner.
I expect Violet will take it just because he's Korean, but it'd be cool to see Grubby win.
|
Hmm, Lucifron was an ace player for team nGize who was ranked 1st in the most prestigious team league in WC3. His brother VortiX I would say broke out later as it was very hard to get famous. Lucifron didn't have much trouble becoming one of the scariest players in wc3 ^_^
So psyched for this. Really hoping Grubby shows his best performance. viOLet was my favorite Orc in wc3, but he's won enough in sc2, Grubby needs to rise!!!
|
Very nice player lineup, although odd that you chose to take 2 zergs considering recent trends.
Anyways, gogo Grubby!
|
I don't even know who to cheer for so ... cheer for ALL the players!
Scarlett - favorite NA zerg viOLet - tied for my favorite player Lucifron - my TvZ mech-inspiration Grubby - ... he's The Grubby, what else to say?
Haven't seen violet play in awhile but he was in really top form at the end of 2012, did quite well for himself at Blizzard Cup. Scarlett's play has been looking amazing lately. I know people we be all "zerg imba zerg imba" but I think that given the player pool, violet and Scarlett just have a higher skill level but all these games should be awesome! This also means violet's finally coming back to the US
|
Why so much money for so few players... ?
|
|
damn on the link to tickets it says taeja instead of lucifron.
guess he backed out.
this would have been 100 times more interesting if taeja was there
|
Violet vs Scarlett finals
|
violet will definitely take this...

Great idea! Loving the network day too!
|
COME ON SCARLETT!
But seriously, this is a awesome showdown. Soo good. Love watching Grubby and violet is well Violet how can you really complain?
|
Oooh, another HIN-type set-up. It has great players and should be entertaining. Expecting viOLet to win, but Scarlett might pull the upset (upset in my eyes).
|
hardest part is going to be ignoring work while i hide away to watch this all day! I feel a sick day coming on!
|
It seems obvious a zerg will win, again
|
Violet unable to come .
IPL really likes inviting Illusion though.
Well, I think Scarlett's going to take this now. At least it's a cool foreigner-only event now I guess.
|
Wouldn't this have been a great opportunity to invite a fan favorite like EG-Demuslim? No offense to Illusion.
|
This looks a lot easier for Scarlett to win now (if her hand is better)
|
too bad violet didnt play.. was a clear favorite ^^
|
Visa issues? That´s a bit surprising, considering, how long viOLet already lived in the US. Sad for him, he had a good chance to take that money, now I´hoping for Lucifronn to take it, he should be able to do so.
Is there a bracket somewhere? Did´nt find one yet.

We actually did invite DeMusliM but he had to decline. There are very limited options for replacing players with a few days notice. We apologize to the community for the last minute switcheroo.
|
i think it's great this is a foreigner invites only event because there's no clear winner anymore.
|
Did u see the game illusion vs demuslim few month ago. Illusion won 3-0. I think illusion better then demuslim ILLUSION FIGHTING ♥.♥ ★

Well with no ViOlet this just got a little more interesting. I can't be unhappy with any of these players winning, I love them all.

To be fair, it is much easier to have a balanced prize pool when you have 4 players. Not saying other tournaments can't have less top heavy splits. But if you are paying top 32/16, even slightly increases to the lower finishers add up significantly.

Well, unless you want them to invite zergs only, Luci and Grubby are pretty good picks. All the top Koreans are playing Code S/Code A.

Scarlett will win very easily.

Well, Feb 10 is Lunar New Years and it is one of the biggest holidays in Korean (thus no Proleague). So I am not sure how many koreans would want to fly to US during this time.
|
|
Well I expected a violet vs scarlett final, now it's prob lucifron vs scarlett. Scarlett should win the tournament pretty handily.

Well, the event was scheduled to take place with DICE, so IPL can't do much about the date. That was decided by DICE organizers
|
|
his excellent performance in IPL's Fight Club at Hot Import Nights
I like Illusion quite a lot but he lost 2-1 to HerO and 2-0 to MMA. Excellent is an awful word to use for 1 map win for a guy who was out of his league.
As for this event, I hope IPL produces lots of content around the players. That's the nice thing about there only being four players, it gives you a good chance to center content around them and give them lots of exposure.
Hope IPL stops doing these events as random invites though. Something like this with 4 qualifiers instead from EU, NA, KOR, and everywhere else would be better imo.
|
With Violet out there's little in the way of Scarlett rolling over this field. What is tournament format?

Good event. Where can i find info about format/brackets?
|
Watch as Illusion wins now and everyone hypes him again.
Actually think these players are very well matched and should show good games, rather than Violet dominating everyone. Looking forward to it! I guess I'm supporting Grubby because Protoss but I like all of them.
|
I like the non korean line up. NA against EU!!
|
I expect Scarlett to crush everyone with an iron fist.
|
|
Gonna be good,go Lucifron!
|
Damn I wanna see Luci burning some drones

Violett no longer playing? That's quite unfortunate. Oh well. Can't wait to see Scarlett vs ____ In the finals
|
Nice timing by Illusion, better hold by Scarlett. Illusion needed to kill the 3rd and didn't...
|
Gogo Luci! NA vs EU setup in the brackets, interesting.
|
Illusion's TvZ feels Polt-ish.
|
The creep spread is almost disappointing considering it's scarlett.
|
On February 08 2013 03:15 a3den wrote: Illusion's TvZ feels Polt-ish. Only without the winning.^^
No offense to Illusion.
But yeah, you can liken foreigner playstyles to Koreans quite nicely, Lucifron is a bit Mvp-ish, Kas more similar to Bomber etc.
|
Simple game, Illusion tried to put Scarlett under pressure, failed, she took advantage and rolled over him.

I'm surprised this doesn't even have 3k viewers, the players are pretty good and well-liked in the community. Anyway, I'll stay tuned in for the whole duration. Let's go Grubby!

It's poorly promoted, normally it should get quite a bit more viewers.
I mean, just look at how many pages this thread has and it's already two weeks old, I suppose there are just not that many people knowing about it.
The viewer numbers will probably slowly rise throughout the day. Even if it's not a good time for NA right now, you can get far more viewers than it has atm from EU alone.

It's a great time for EU. Also, GSL and PL get great numbers despite the terrible time at which they are aired.

Scarlett is still the favourite for the tournament but she looks beatable. Not saying it will happen, but it could.

Illusion should really sack some SCVs, his army is too small.
|
Illusion is playing some really awesome late game TvZ.
|
I'm really impressed by Illusion, has had some really good plays so far this game. Think he will need another money nuke to win it though.
|
The starving technique will probably work out, even though I don't like it much.
|
Does Illusion even realize how many SCVs he's got? -_-
|
Atleast he is the only zerg, so no ZvZ final -.-

Maybe he should make less scvs...

Awesome nuke style. He just needed to take that base quicker and he would have been able to keep going.

You really can't blame people for whining about a ZvZ finals, there have been way to many of those in the past few months. I probably wouldn't watch the finals if they did end up as a ZvZ, so I'm glad one the zergs couldn't attend. This has nothing to do with balance for me personally btw.

so little viewers, must be because f*** its thursdays

Ah, now the matchup I'm more interested in, gogo LucifroN! He should be in pretty good shape, he has been crushing everyone on EU recently, as usual.

I love both of these guys, I want one of them to take the whole tournament.

Lucifron, brutally efficient...
|
Woohoo, well done LucifroN! Good hold against the colossus timing and counter drop at the same time, then he was quite ahead with 3 CCs and the upgrade advantage. One more game!
|
Grubby not exactly impressing in game 1. Looked like he wanted to do Squirtle colossus push, and then he expanded... Really late forges, really late twilight council. Better step up for game 2.

not exactly, but u lose more than u win by watching on the screen for sure.
also, there is a fucking camera on their faces and tons of ppl watching, how would they ever be able to without anyone noticing^^

Hey, I was joking about the screen behind them. Of course they are not stupid enough to cheat. ><"

Lucifron's army control is so good it doesn't even matter he doesn't focus on his bases during fights. Just picked Grubby apart.

Yess, maybe he can even defeat Scarlett. Maybe. She's looked decent but not unbeatable, same as Lucifron.

lucifron had 2 starports and vikings all the time as well? after losing the first big fight, he relied on winnig the HT vs ghost battle. colossus wouldnt have cut it, espeically because he also wouldve to build more stalkers than zealots in that case.
€: btw: why isnt it featured on TL at all. if i didnt follow Kevin Knocke, i wouldnt know about this happening at all...
so little viewers, it hurts inside.

There are a lot of ways to cheat. Hell, players playing in online tournaments could be asking their better teammates to play for them. But we have to trust them to have that integrity. Plus, it would be so easily caught in a live setting

Loser bracket first? Why? That gives the advantage in the next LB round to the player who lost first because he can relax and think about the games while the better performing player has to play right after losing in WB2, makes little to no sense.
Also, it's a one-day-event, right? It'll finish today?

Illusion's openings remind me a little bit of MKP.

On another note, it might not be too bad for Grubby that he couldn't make it to the Code A match.

yep. also, we can see why a super fast 3rd can be pretty deadly for a protoss player, if abused correctly.

Illusion's style kind of reminds me of Polt in how he splits his units and concaves them.

That was a sick game by Illusion
|
Great game by Illusion! Sick multitasking and drop play. Hoping that he wins the next game and stays in.

I have never seen ohana played so well in TvP. Those were some sick drops.

Great to see some non mass-zerg tournaments =)
Gogo Illu and Luci =)

Thanks StarVe.
Hope Grubby can close it out in this last game, I know he isn't focused entirely in WoL anymore, but it's still fun to see him play it.

Grubby settles for a thousand bucks, not too bad for a trip to Vegas, but still, those two BO3s weren't so impressive.
Good by Illusion, managed to pull the game back in his favour but I'll still keep rooting for Lucifron.
|
Grubby butchered a lot of storms and had overall very poor unit control and decision making. He just seemed off today.
|
Question, why don't ts bring and hold back one scv to repair? Felt like both games medivacs were hanging on by a thread.
|
Doesn't grubby look somehow exhausted to you?

well what you expect when when you travel as much as he has done last month and then play a lot of HotS. i dont even think Grubby came here thinking he could do anything, just get a trip to Vegas + $1k and get it over with.

C'mon LucifroN, time to satisfy my craving for drone bbqs :3

I wish that Grubby would take over the casting now that he's been eliminated.

It's a shame they split the prizepool amongst all 4 participants. Never liked a format where you invite players directly into a prizepool (not to say that any of the 4 players don't merit an invite - that's just not always the case).
Looking forward to the coming games!

Kevin is perhaps the best announcer in sc2. He understands what a cast should be. It's simple, but proven and works. A pbp guy and an analyst. And he is the top pbp guy.

Why does this have so few viewers? Is there a competing bigger tournament? Or because it is played on Thursday?

Well DICE is a video gaming industry summit, so it may be arguably more important that the live viewers (summit attendees, which may include video game industry executives, experts and insiders) have a good impression than simply the number of online stream watchers. So even if stream viewership is low, it doesn't necessarily mean the event is a failure as long as a good impression can be made at to the live attendees.

Wouldn't go as far as saying mega nerfed. It's a projectile but a quick one, and on top of that its range is 10, that's 2 more than in WoL.

Boring? Maybe, but you have to respect her ability to creep spread. It was crucial to winning her that game.

Weeyoooo, drone barbecue!

That was cute, I've never seen Drone's transfused before. I doubt its enough to save Scarlett but it was good play.

Man, this is brutal. I don't know how people can deal with that.

What was Happy´s record for killing drones in one game again? 330 or smth like that?

Disappointing for Scarlett, she is capable of better. Her ZvT is strong but she didn't even defend vs basic hellion/banshee harass. She looked tired and off her game for whatever reason. Credit to Lucifron he also played very well. Terrans seem to be abnormally winning of late.

But it was already too late. Multitasking is getting hugely stretched, and you're already struggling to establish 3 bases when the Terran's already going. That follow up would crush regardless! Super impressive play from Lucifron.

I grow tire of "subjectivity" as a response to things. Some literature is better than others. Ulysses is better than A Song of Ice and Fire which is better than Fifty Shades of Grey. This isn't subjective.
Same with film. The Godfather is better than Battle Royale which is better than Avatar. This isn't subjective either.
And the same can be said for music. Radiohead is better than Skrillex who is better than Justin Bieber.
Anyway, this is off topic. Let's return to looking forward to Scarlett vs Lucifron round 2!

Which is why you build them to target the infestors while your marines and marauders work on the ultralisks and zerglings. If you expect to win this high up with only marines and marauders vs ultralisks zerglings banelings infestors and brood lords, and you think you 'should' be able to win like that, you're kidding yourself.

He's not the only one that disagrees with you + Show Spoiler +that it's troll bait - because honestly, there is no factual basis on which you can place your assumptions other than "I'm right and that's why it's not subjective." Roll that one around a bit. There are no acceptable objective metrics you can use.
But you're right, this isn't the place.
On topic... Scarlett is having a tough time against Lucifron. I think Lucifron has really upped his game, or else he's channeling the ghost of Slayers past with his mass blue flame build. Or maybe Scarlett is just having a tough time dealing with mech - because she's crushed her bio opponents.

Gratz Lucifron. And hey, you didn't have to knock out your brother!

Nice play from Lucifron but lets be honest: Scarlett didnt give him any resistance whatsoever.

Would be funny if lucifron had to play a special guest who of course would be his brother.

Lucifron is almost definitely better at the other matchups though and in the foreign scene those are the only matchups that matter due to the huge lack of Terrans.

I think that in TvP Kas > Luci But in TvZ Luci > Kas and TvT Kas > Luci

For all those who were asking about the music, check out @IPLTunes on twitter. That has playlists and other goodies buried in its history.

I´d also say the top spot can´t be awarded at the Moment. LucifoN has most definitly stronger TvZ than Kas, while Kas has a TvT advantadge and both of them have sick TvP (Just ask MC, PartinG, Seed...). But I think the middle tier of foreign terrans is slowely rising up at the moment, with Beasty, Happy and GoOdy all showing signs of recovery, Morrow switching back in Hots and players like Dayshi and Illusion getting better, so we may see foreign TvT getting more relevant in the future.

WP Lucifron. Scarlett just not committed to a earlier roach aggressive strategy, instead of losing all those drones to a banshee, spending 2 spores on each base would have more than made up for the concentration on attacking instead of defending, allowing lucifron to set the pace of the game and made it look easy.
Just remembering TLO and Ret games where a really aggressive roach push is needed just before T saturates his 3rd base and gets Mech going.

I think Luci is slightly better but you can't say that so convincingly imo, they were pretty close throughout the last couple of months. Lucifron is almost definitely better at the other matchups though and in the foreign scene those are the only matchups that matter due to the huge lack of Terrans. Kas has sick, sick TvP. I don't think LucifroN is clearly better at that. For TvZ, yes, I agree. Didn't Luci 2-0 Parting recently?
Kas also beat Parting a while ago.
I think Kas is still slightly better but it's undisputable that they're both leagues above the rest (besides Thorzain but there isn't much fame for him in the proleague)

was super surpised that scarlett didn't get first other than that the results are pretty much how i thought they would be lol.

"Scarlett took IPL 4 by storm"
Illusion had even a better run at IPL 4 than Scarlett

Except Scarlett was completely unknown at that point (except for people that watched the Playhem Sponsor Me! tournament prior to it and I guess her ladder opponents that may have thought it's a smurf anyway)

Glad that Scarlett lost and that Lucifron won...btw has Scarlett ever won a tournament apart from WSC NA(not necessarily a major one) ?

Not any majors but i think she won a tournament that sent her to ipl4 for unsponsored players and i guess wcs canada was technically a tournament outside of wcs NA

It's harsh to say you're glad someone lost, but anyway, to answer your question, besides daily cups and female cups she won pretty much only WCS NA and WCS Canada. Had 2nd place at the previous RSL (lost vs Leenock I think) and 2nd place at MSI Pro Cup Worldwide (lost vs Hyun)

Lucifron is too good ))

Lucifron winning shouldn't surprise anyone, he has beaten Stephano many times and is probably the best foreign terran overall with top notch TvZ (although based on results Thorzain might just pip him.)
Scarlett is really good, but SC2 is a volatile game and between her and Lucifron neither one could possibly be a large favourite over the other so I am amazed anyone is really surprised. It was hardly Life vs an unknown.
If Lucifron was from the US perhaps peoples thoughts might be different.

glad to see lucifron playing this well last hope of eu terran -_-

Kas/Lucifron would both rape the international scene if tourneys like this would be more frequent. unfortunately they don't win big tournaments with koreans.

I'm talking about the way its was put in the text.... it completely hides the fact that Illusion had a better run than Scarlett, but implies that he needs to proov himself while Scarlett does not...
Illusion took Zenio, Kiwikaki, Oz and the TvT specialist Ryung, btw.

Lucifron was lucky in this tournament for not facing Illusion, for Illusions TvT is quite amazing
|
That's kinda true, but they didn't acknowledge his run then and focused on Scarlett and they did the same here, because they probably thought she had the more interesting story.
At least they invited Illusion to two of these events already, so he's probably quite happy every time he gets free money without having to do anything.

Or you can look at it the way it's meant to be, which is that Illusion has had absolutely no results lately.

so he had no results lately, and because of that scarlett beating oz is more impressive than illusion beating zenio, oz and ryung.
gotcha.
