You can indeed mine less gas, that does translate in a +0 mineral income since the "mineral" problem comes from not being able to take/defend bases.
I guess you could add one starport with a TL early on (can't afford more) and pump 1-raven at a time for when they get old and filled with energy... trust-fund like.
