I am hosting a community based tournament to facilitate both a unique viewer experience, and the promotion of player streams. The unique parameters of this tournament are that viewers influence, through voting, the map pool and the player invites: Also, all participating players stream their perspective (and are allowed to run ads and keep all revenue).

I have designed a structure such that community member may assume roles of casters, admins, and (of course) players. In addition to the invites that are influenced by the community polls, there are 3 qualification events. This design is detailed; created by assimilating the formats of the best leagues/tournaments, and with the legitimate intent to facilitate a great user experience, in terms of both the capacity to govern significant tournament parameters, and viewership in general. The rest of this thread will convey my design to you, and should provide clear information in regards to any method of involvement.

Notes (about reserved spots and confirmed invites):
+ Show Spoiler +
-If AxCrank or Liquid'TLO do not confirm their pending invites (both have requested time for schedule verification), then an invite will be extended to ROOTPuck.
-If both AxCrank and Liquid'TLO do not confirm their pending invites, then an invite will be extended to ROOTPuck, RootMajOr will take the other voted slot and a new direct invite will be sent.
-Note that Harstem was invited from the reddit thread due to inadequate vote counts in the first TL poll.
-Note that CombatEX has agreed to play under conditions that 100% guarantee that cheating is not possible.
+ Show Spoiler +
--#1: There will be a 5 minute stream delay on the caster streams
--#2: A webcam will be placed in his room to reveal that there is no secondary monitor within his vision.
--#3: He will be forced to use speakers instead of a headset, such that he cannot deny skype from interfacing with the headset and receive auditory advice undetectable by stream viewers. Any voice that occurs over the speakers would be audible in his mic. Yes this will lower the production value of CombatEX's stream but he must make this trade-off to compete.
--#4: He must request to pause.
--#5: He may not spam chat in game (subjective enforcement).
Streaming his own perspective clearly negates the capacity to hack (which he isn't even known for)

-Destiny saw the invite from the first r/starcraft thread but since the overall thread count was reduced it is reasonable to allocate 2 slots to the final TL player poll (as they suffer from minimal particiaption) and allocate a seed to this player; who recieved more upvotes than the other players from the first r/starcraft thread.

If you are wondering about how the "Community Choice" invites work, refer to the "Community" section of this thread.

If you are wondering about how to participate in a qualifier, reference that section.

Note: The bracket stage facilitates both double elimination (for the players ranking 1st or 2nd in their groups), and a distinct 1st-4th place, for which cash prizes will be allocated.

Note: NA Server; but players from all regions are welcome.

Prize Distribution:

+ Show Spoiler +
Current Main Event Prize Pool = $400

Day 1:
40% = 5% x 8 Group Winners

Day 2:
30% = 1st Place Bracket Stage
15% = 2nd Place Bracket Stage
10% = 3rd Place Bracket Stage
5% = 4th Place Bracket Stage
(Total 60% allocated towards Bracket Stage)

With an ideal prize pool of $500, it would look like this:

+ Show Spoiler +
Day 1:
$200 = $25 x 8 Group Winners

Day 2:
$150 = 1st Place
$75 = 2nd Place
$50 = 3rd Place
$25 = 4th Place

Main Event specific rules (including check-in times) for players and casters are available here:

To host a stream or be a caster, email WhalesFromSpace@gmail.com.
Note: Unreasonably awful emails will be responded to with a picture of Kimbo Slice.
Note: Caster streams will implement a 5 minute stream delay.

This streaming format facilitates a multitude of options for the viewer in regards to their tournament experience. If particular casters, or observation work is infringing on the viewer's capacity to enjoy the game, they can switch the the play perspective of who they are rooting for, or even select one of the other 3+ matches being streamed in parallel. Open Coverage allows newer or unknown casters to present high level games and recieve feedback from a live scenario. This design results in all matches being broadcast, and offers 3 ways to interface with each match. The schedule for the broadcasting of the double-elimination bracket was verified as smooth for live presentation in my previous event (Space Whales Super Showdown: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=334263)

For some context to the polls, please reference graphic linked in the above section.

Voting Format:

+ Show Spoiler +
Team Liquid:
Players post, or are nominated by a fan post, for inclusion in the poll system. Only one instance of nomination is required for conclusion in each poll (or until the player is voted into participation). Polls will be posted for ~24 hours, and at the end of the duration invites will be sent out in order of highest voted for players, until 3 players accept invitation into the Main Event.

If you are nominating a player, or posting in request to be included in the poll, please use this format:

Include in Player Poll:
Bnet.ID:
Stream Link:

This will make it much easier for me to create the polls.

reddit/r/starcraft:
Players post, or are nominated, by comments in specific threads allocated towards player voting. The upvotes will be recorded ~24 hours after a thread is created: Invites will be sent out in order of highest voted for players, until 3 players accept invitation into the Main Event. Do note that a comment will have to be made each time a thread pops up, even if it is a recurring instance of poll participation.

Note: The change was made for 3 players to be included per poll; this was because of the delays associated in player contact (for example many took 2-3 days to respond).

Note: I did not use a TeamLiquid.net forum poll because the max is 12 options.
Note: Of the players that had more than 3 votes each, only 2 accepted invitation (Drewbie and CatZ did not respond). So, I allocated the 3rd player spot to the r/sc thread; as it recieved over 10x the participation.

What if a player can't stream because he doesn't have enough bandwidth to do so? Is he not allowed to participate?

If you need stream mods I could probably help, and this looks like a great idea for a tournament. Hopefully some good streamers will get more recognition!!

Stream delays should be a must here if we are promoting it, don't want to give it a bad impression by immediately showing signs of stream cheating.

We had several discussion on mappool sizes. Wasn't the result that it always came down to: too many maps, 5 or just 4 would be enough. I'd rather see one combined poll for 4 maps. I think 9 maps is way over the top.

Other than that, I think it's a nice idea. Good Luck and hope it turns out great.

My favourite part about this tournament is the voting for MOTM maps to be put into the map pool. If they end up playing well in a tournament format, we might finally see an update to the excruciatingly stagnant tournament pools.

Other than that, I think it's a nice idea. Good Luck and hope it turns out great.

I see your points and considered this perspective when designing the community interaction parameter. I feel that using the conventional quantity of 5 maps would result in a generic tournament map pool with maybe 1 unexpected addition. I chose 9 maps because it facilitates, along with diversity and increased community interaction, a best of 7 in which each player vetos a map. Note that for every round, players each veto a map from the series. This should allow players with a distaste for new map experimentation, or general discomfort with a specific option, the chance to eliminate it from their tournament experience. I expect to get 7 standard tournament maps along with 2 community made maps.

It is clearly a trade-off, so I went for the less conventional approach to cater towards the unique parameters of the tournament.

I can follow your reasoning as it's a smaller tournament. The post was more my personal dislike with the bigger mappools in bigger tournaments (I really wouldn't mind only 3-4 maps at major tournaments). Looking forward to see that little project of yours unfold.

Are those directly invited players just those that have been asked and invited or have they confirmed they will participate?

What about delay server? With a tournament format that focuses mainly on player streams streamcheating could be a major issue. Would the use of a delay server on player streams be encouraged or enforced? Or would real-time streaming be mandatory? Thanks.

With every player streaming it should make it somewhat difficult to hide if you are stream cheating (yes, still possible). Most players that play at tournament levels know the risk of getting caught stream cheating isn't worth it.

I'm wondering why so many streams. 4 streams plus player streams? This kind of tournament gets only hundreds to few thousand concurrent viewers. Getting four sets of casters just sounds excessive.

It is my opinion that you should start with something small and grow it over time instead of going straight to this complex thing. Hope you pull it off though!

Players can use a delay server if they want, if the player doesn't feel comfortable streaming in real-time, then a slight delay could be applied, but anything over a couple minutes would hinder production.

I like every series to be covered by the production of the stream; my format facilitates this. As you mentioned building up from a foundation would be ideal to verify the functionality of this production design: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=334263.
Note the similarities in the bracket stages, and how those matches were broadcast with 4 streams.

qxc is playing in WCG USA and minigun has personal plans. Also, since grubby was the top of the r/starcraft thread, he does not need to be included in the next poll. I will add the others though; they are quite demanding in terms of prize pool.

Alright the first TL player poll is up; vote here:
http://kwiksurveys.com/app/showpoll.asp?sid=g9u1svbvkvn4c9c25871&qid=25871&new=True

Let me know if I missed anyone; I also recieved some nominations via PM and email.
Overall it seems like there are a few top names that may not be attracted by the prize pool, but I am excited to see who you guys pick from this list. Once again I will be inviting players in order of the most votes, until 2 players accept invitation

Note: Poll Closes in ~24 hours.

Roughly when will the tournament be held? And when will caster applicants be notified if they are accepted? My partner and I emailed you yesterday, and I was curious to see when this would be held so I can plan accordingly. Thanks!

I am happy you want to have your map in the poll. It won't be around until a couple of days from now, so I will post the link when it is created (then you comment in the thread with your map and maybe a picture!).

last night there was a problem with NA version of Astro Haze due to editor dependancies that changes with patch 1.5.3. While we were able to solve that issue in time for the quarterfinals in the map of the month it was already to late for this tournament. i think it will get used in the main event. apologies for the issue.

Yup; it is all good! We will still use Astro Haze in the main event

On another note I am worried about the log-in issue which could effect today's open qualifier.

AFAIK it's just people trolling the tourny people cause they were yelling for Incontrol to be disqualified for BMing combatex.

The fact you even stand up for him proves you probably just started getting into the starcraft scene the past year paying attention to who he is. Even if you have been around then you should have some idea of the horrid things he said/done. If not do your research on him over the past years and tell me you think someone like that should be allowed in tournaments ever. He is a cancer and anyone who has been paying attention to the starcraft scene for the past years would agree with everything I have said

I don't think you know who Combat-EX is.

But I'm not really surprised at the number of game refusals and drama that's going on here. Nice idea for a tournament, but it doesn't seem to be running too smoothly. There's way too much bullshit and over-the-top BM going on here- both in and out of the games.

But props to iNcontroL for putting up with this nonsense anyway:

This tournament is a joke. So disorganized and so much downtime it's impossible to watch without wanting to shoot myself in the face. Spacewhales stream chat was getting trolled so hard and wasn't being modded at all while they read it on stream and laughed. Arguing with players about rules on stream instead of having a set of solid rules. It's to the point where I'm pretty sure they are excited about people watching them and thinking they are the cool kids in school. I would be surprised if any player of any value ever agreed to play in another one of your tournaments. Garbage.

Yeah I see Waterloo... I meant Combat-EX's atrocious history and how he's been removed from the community, and appropriately so...

HAHAHAHAHA iNcontroL beats Combat-EX yet again ♥ So epic. And naturally, Combat-EX bms him in game, and then ragequits.

incontrol up 3-0 now on combatex. reminds me of their showmatch

can we just get combatex out of this tourney? why let a notorious stream cheater into tourney's anyways, especially ones that are online that involve streaming

get that trash out of here

combatex saying early "bye" in that game on daybreak and then losing.
what a f*cking loser and idiot

Results from Group G:

1st: ROOTSlush
2nd: ClassicRemarK
3rd: Dissonance (replacement player for QuanticHawk)
4th: Jemag (not sure his current team, his tag is xSixJemag and he is at Razer house with Mr. Bitter)

Some pretty good games, had a fun time playing and I'm looking forward to tomorrow.

Also, while I'm not up to date on what happened in iNc vs CombatEX, there's no reason to come here being hateful or insulting the tournament organizers. Mistakes happen, accept that and convey your dissatisfaction in a respectful and constructive manner.

Please let this be the last we see of this clown, all the people who actually think combatex isn't a complete cyst in the armpit of stacraft only need to look at this series to see that this guy never changes

Other than a slightly hyperbolic call of 'garbage,' most of the issues people have raised are pretty reasonable problems to have. Why isn't there a concise, consistent set of rules? Why is Geoff playing Combat in the first round, anyway, and why is Combat even allowed in? Why is the chat left open and unmoderated? Why aren't issues between players and admins being discussed in private, and why do the admins seem completely clueless as to what the issues actually are? Why are games being started when players aren't ready? Why has it taken two hours to play a B-o-3? In short, who the hell is running this show and why are they doing it so poorly?

lol combat ex should not try multi pronged attack/harass... just ends up hurting himself. and he needs to take care of his observers

games vs combatex dont even qualify as practise for incontrol, just a waste of time

glad he's out of it.

incontrol wins 4-0 in a best of 3. admins were nice enough to give combat ex a free second chance

Funniest part was Combatex trying to preemptive call the game and manner nexus and lost each time.
i was driving down the road this november eve and spotted a hitchhiker walking down the street. i pulled over and saw that it was only a tree. i uprooted it and put it in my trunk. do trees like marshmallow peeps? cause that's all i have and will have.

So according to a post on facebook, Incontrol was DQ'd for having Huk play on his account? Can anyone confirm/deny?

AFAIK it's just people trolling the tourny people cause they were yelling for Incontrol to be disqualified for BMing combatex.

Look, there is trolling and then there is behaving like 8 year olds, this was without a doubt the later one.

But does anyone know what happened in Group c?

Brackets will be posted in the morning because my computer with photoshop blue-screened and I really need some sleep. The format indicates where players are playing based off of standings but I will have to fill it in tomorrow.

feedback: each round should have a fixed starting map. It's pretty silly to have players flipping coins, as it gives one player a big advantage in that they get 2 map picks to their opponents 1 based on random luck.

(wait, I think the series is supposed to be bo5, but they haven't played a third game?)

edit: Ok they're continuing the series after some confusion.
