Your thinking was wrong. His TvP has been his weakest match up for about more than a month (first, crank, seed, even yongwha.. ok yong pulled a Ret there but still had a huge advantadge against him just playing defensively).
Defensive protoss + Harass ussually breaks Taeja on TvP. He manages all in well tho.

I'm listening to the press room interview with Rain right now, he keeps saying that he actually came today with a mindset to just enjoy the games today and not care about the results. He's very surprised that he did so well. He was very worried because he did poorly in practice, but it always seems like suddenly he plays a lot better on broadcasted matches.
He also just learned that you get Code S for next season if you make it to Ro8, he didn't even know.
