The first group stage and the map pool are revealed for the next ASUS ROG StarCraft II Tournament, going live at August 2 in Helsinki, Finland.
One week to go and the fourth ASUS ROG StarCraft II Tournament is getting ready to start the battle for the $30 000 USD. 32 players have been announced and now it’s time to put them in their starting positions in the first group stage.
Remember the groups are being played out GSL style: four players and double elimination until the best two players have been determined and they advance to the next stage. Also, all the games in the group stages are best-of-5.
Change in the roster: Bly has cancelled his participation to the tournament. He has been replaced by BRAT_OK.
First group stage
In the first round of a group, the player 1 plays against player 2, and the player 3 plays against player 4.
* Group 1 has been switched with Group 5, and Group 3 has been switched with Group 6 (same players, only name and order changes) for scheduling reasons. Apologies for the mix up.
** aTn.Socke, viOLet, ROX.KiS.Pomi and RoX.KIS.fraer cancelled their participation soon after the groups were released. They have been replaced by Fuzer, dignitas.Bischu, FnaticRC.Harstem and iP.Satiini respectively. Note that in case any group falls short on players, the group will be played in Round Robin format instead of the GSL style. *** Ai.Cytoplasm announced that he is unable to attend the event. He is replaced by Menace.MeteoRain.

That's 14:00--19:00 for groups 1-4 and 19:00--00:00 for groups 5-8, so it's 5 hours per group. Each group has 3 rounds and each round has two or one matches. With 4 groups playing simultaneously that's maximum of 8 games at a time. Two games will be covered by the official streams each round and some of the rest are covered by other streams. In the second group stage there's only two groups playing simultaneously.
Sick, no group really looks weak. Only few groups where someone is the obvious first (only group 1 and 4 with Taeja and MC as the seemingly unstoppable players).

each group actually has five match (dual tournament style) and at least 3 games per match (bo5) so that's 15-25 games

Yes but u fail to add in that it is not 2pm-7pm, there is a gap for change over of the groups. its 1hour and 30minutes per game according to what is wrote down. Groups 1-4 game 1 starts 2pm by 3:30pm (1hr 30minutes later) you need to be sat down playing game 2. In a BO5 that is cutting it close because you could easily be playing a bo5 in an hour leaving 30minutes to prepare for the next game, that is if an hour for casted bo5 is enough, if its 3-2 and you add into that add breaks for stream and casters your cutting it close. GOM in ithe group games last from (talkng from brittish time zone perspective) 10:10am to 1:30-2:00pm that is 3-4hours just playing BO3 group stage game, let alone adding in the bo5, and they have adds too which im sure this tournament will be doing.

I like how elfi got in a group with two protoss' and one zerg, a zerg which isn't a big name (yet?). Pretty much the best group he could have hoped for :D
Well im pretty uncomfortable with the use of GSL groups but they cant please everyone I guess. At least they seem to have done an excellent job seeding the groups!
Love the GSL groups/Bo5 format, should be really awesome with no meaningless games or 3-way-tie scenarios... and as it's Bo5 if you get knocked out, you probably deserve it. Put on top of that the awesome player pool and this event should be amazing :D
Really loving the look of the groups and the format. As a EG fan I was expecting some team kills with so many players participating but happy to see that's not the case. Never really followed Suppy so I don't know his best match up but glancing at his stats his biggest scalps have been against Protoss players, so that's a shame he didn't get one in his group
Sick lineup. Looking at foreigners only, clearly better than last MLG arena (yeah, reason is most players didnt try to qualify there).
A: Could even see MC falling here. European PvP + Liverzergs unconventional ZvP. Favourites are MC and Titan. B: violet and Moon should be too strong here. C: Really close group. Who advances depends a lot on the pairings in the used GSL group system. I say Fraer and Mana. D: Idra once again with a lucky group. Don't think he would advance out of any other group. But here Taeja + Idra. E: Hero + anyone. Socke wasnt too strong lately, but he always amazes offline when you don't expect it. F: I believe Huk will fall here, he looked weak playwise and mentally lately. Naamas unconvential play and a good european PvPer is exactly what he could lose to. TheSTC and Seiplo advance. G: Cyto has sick ZvZ, he may be getting through by only winning this MU. Other than that: Kas and Ret. H: Sase and Puma seem to be the favourites. Puma is a bit shaky, but Nightend and BratOK don't look too strong recently to upset him.
I think Hero, Taeja, MC, Violet are favorites to take this. Groups look pretty competitive. I think MC has the weakest group and he should win that easily.

Hero vs Taeja in and epic final that goes in Hero's favor with a 4-3 score? The other way around would be awesome too. There is too much Liquid epicness coming the next weeks.

Yeah 4-3 for HerO would be awesome. Taeja got to win MLG, now it's HerO's time to shine!
1: MC, and Babyknight. MC is the obvious 1st here, but the 2nd spot is hard to predict. I will go for Babyknight because he seems to have a very strong pvp in a 3-toss group.
2: This group is tricky. Violet should be 1st in this group, but I wouldn't necessarily say that moon is surely going to advance as well. Demu has great tvz so he could take a set from Violet and/or Moon and Welmu seems to be on the rise as well. I'll go for Violet and Demuslim here.
3: Mana has weak pvz, but if he is able to beat Jonnyrecco he should be through. On the other hand, Fraer is a bit of a mystery here so he could be the dark horse here. I'll go for ForGG and Mana anyway.
4: Taeja should go 3-0 here, but the 2nd spot is tricky to predict; Protosser has seemed strong lately beating a lot of players, Pomi is a solid protoss and Idra's performances fluctuate quite a bit. I think Idra should be able to barely make it through, so Taeja and Idra.
5: I don't know a lot about Sortof, but for sure he can't beat HerO, right? Socke beat DRG not too long ago and Elfi's pvz nowadays is seeming better, so I bet that HerO goes 3-0 and SortOf 0-3. But who will take the 2nd spot, Socke or Elfi? Considering how strong Elfi's pvp is, I would have to go for Elfi here. I could see him even upsetting HerO if he plays on top of his game. HerO and Elfi.
6: I don't know a lot about Seiplo but I don't see him getting through here. So what do we have left? The unpredictable Naama, HuK, who has shown weak performances lately and STC, who seems to be quite solid but not stellar. STC should go through here, beating at least 2 of the 3 other players in the group, but the 2nd spot is quite the contest. I'll go for HuK just by a hair. STC and HuK.
7. What an interesting group. Suppy is strong but I predict he'll lose to Kas and Ret and will not advance from the group. Cytoplasm is good, but is he good enough to beat Kas and/or Ret? I'm not sure. I think Ret and Kas should advance here.
8. This is also a group with one korean and 3 foreigners, but this time the korean doesn't seem so dominant at all. SaSe has beat top koreans, including Puma, in the past. Bratok seems the obvious 0-3 player here, but the rest should be a very tight competition. Puma hasn't seemed so strong lately, and I would go as far to call SaSe the favorite against him. Nightend has been training in korea for quite a while and could upste Puma. SaSe should beat Nightend with his sexy pvp, but will Nightend beat Puma, and will Puma beat SaSe? Who knows. I'll go for SaSe and Puma here, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the 2 protosses advance here.
Seiplo the PvP king and a well-known Terran in the same group as HuK, could easily be an early exit for him, he needs to beat either 1 of these 2 to progress but the odds are stacked against him.
Can see 2 EG players going out infact, violet and Moon have shown amazing ZvT and ZvZ play very recently, DeMu will need to sneak a 2nd place.
There are a lot of really interesting story lines going on here. Can violet still be as dominate without a team? How strong is Moon atm, is he improving? forGG's first foreigner tournament. Many others of course. Really interesting tournament.
Oh yea IdrA should definitely make it out of group easy with only Taeja blocking the number one spot though I don't expect IdrA to take first. He should definitely make it out in second though so I'm quite happy to see that.
Demuslim wont beat his group, his streaming recently has shown average play, and his TvZ has slipped majorly postpatch.
JRecco should go through, along with MaNa. If Demuslim can beat ForGG, offracing as zerg on ladder, JRecco can beat ForGG because he is very good at ZvT.

1hour per game is what most tournaments do, and you don't see all the games in any tournament.
Ie. Taeja v Idra and Protosser v Pomi will be played at the same time (1 hour) Then Winners Play (1 Hour) Then Losers Play (1 hour)
3 hours
The difference to most tournaments is that they play BO5s here.
Wow group 6 is the most interesting by miiiiles. An ex bw-pro, an up&coming protoss player (never heard that one from Europe before...) a scot (WOOT) and a guy going to Korea soon. Needless to say I hope they show all the games from that group in particular :D G2 + G4 looks really competitive aswell if they all play up to par. Will be an exciting tournament and good show, as usual
glad to finally see GSL style group stages in foreign tournaments. round robin is quite silly. bo5 is unnecessary though, at this level (ro32 of a foreign tourney) it's quite easy to see who the better player is in 3 games.
Group A going to be tough for Hero. Sortof is an easy win, zergs pose no threat to hero, so foreign zerg should be a piece of cake. But PvP is by far his weakest matchup and both Elfi and Socke have made reputations for themselves with very solid PvP. The coinflippy nature to the matchup also makes it a tough group to predict. I'm pulling for hero so hard, but I'm nervous for him. It's going to be a difficult fight.
Group 1: HerO, Elfi Group 2: ViOlet, Moon Group 3: TheStC, Naama Group 4: Taeja, Protosser Group 5: MC, Titan Group 6: ForGG, MaNa Group 7: Ret, Cyto Group 8: SaSe, PuMa
Wow it seems like MC got a great group for himself as far as the players' caliber, but it seems like they could pull some upsets, too.
BabyKnight: -67% winrate versus P. Damn! However, it can't be ignored that this is largely against non-Koreans. -A horrid 45% WR versus Z. Uh oh.
Titan: -62% winrate versus P. It's okay, but Titan has a bit higher level experience than the other Europeans in the group. -A respectable 58% WR versus Z. Looking better for Titan than Baby.
LiveZerg: -~60% versus P, but not against people like MC, mostly. He'll have good chances against BabyKnight and Titan with a better WR and the freedom to know that he will be playing exclusively against P in the group stage in his practice.
MC: A beastly 67% winrate against P. An even beastlier ~70% winrate versus Z. I feel good things for MC, here. Most of all, the most experience in the group. And, depending on the + Show Spoiler +
GSL finals
, he could have some CRAZY momentum on his side (largely negligible, IMO).

Wow that is some of the most stacked groups i have seen in a long time - quite well balanced groups IMO. Even though theres some clear favorites in most of the groups, im sure we are gonna see some upsets for sure!

Most of the groups have one or two clearly dominating players then one underdog, I wouldn't say any of the groups except maybe 6 have all 4 people that I'd give at least 20% chance of qualifying.
Looks like a great tournament that has a perfect balance of Koreans and foreigners, so every side can be represented equally I feel.
My predictions: A: Hero, Socke/elfi B: viOLet, Moon C: StC, Naama/HuK D: TaeJa, Anyone really, I'm not too knowledgeble with the Euro players, and IdrA is not looking so good recently E: MC, Titan F: MaNa, JonnyREcco/fOrGG G: Ret, Kas H: SaSe, PuMa
Didn't have much of a chance to see the first ASUSROG so I had no clue who was in that lineup. But with Taeja in making an appearance you can damn well count on me tuning in.

Don't know if troll or just stupid. Homestorycup with like 3 koreans and Heromarine and you call that good pool? And take a look at MLG championship's open pools. Full of North American amateurs... This pool is damn epic.
E: and why the f would group 6 be the most balanced? There's clearly the underdog JohnyRecco. Probably the least balanced group..
And wtf the talent pool? In ASM we have 8 koreans... And top foreigners. In dreamhack there were only like Taeja, Hero and Keen. And the swedish guys put the koreans in the same groups so that they wouldnt make it far :DD talk about "talent" in the pool. In HSC we had something like MVP, Yonghwa and MC. And in HSC there was Destiny, Tarson etc... Can't even compare that to this... People just came there to drink and have fun.. No offense but ASM groups is like best EU.

even as a MKP fan I can say he hasnt been the best TvZ in the world for quite some time. it's his weakest matchup now. he was the best tvz in like late 2010/early 2011 and maybe for like a month when he won his MLGs. Mvp and MMA were always ahead of him in the matchup for the rest of the time. Yes, and I just saw a tyrannosaurus in my back yard.
Anyway back to reality. I really hope Forgg can put on a good show for his new team. Watched alot of is stream l8tly and he seems sharp

Wait since when has MKP had the best TvZ in the world? Even a few months ago when he was wrecking everything his TvZ still looked worse than MMA or Taeja's.

And if you look at the 8 names in those, you know how insane this tournament will be :D
?
Talent pool is pretty good here but it's nowhere at the level of HSC or MLG pools, or Dreamhack 3rd stage.
Most of the groups have one or two clearly dominating players then one underdog, I wouldn't say any of the groups except maybe 6 have all 4 people that I'd give at least 20% chance of qualifying.
Still will be fun though.
HSC was a joke compared to this....the only legit player was MC(MVP has wrist problems and doesn't train as much as he did before).
In this tourney, you have MC, Hero, Taeja, ForGG, Violet and Puma.
This tourney>>>HSC(which isn't even a tourney where players go in order to win but rather to have fun).

That's true, but late cancellations are always tough to handle. For example, only a Korean or top5 EU/NA could have replaced viOLet properly. Anyway, after the first group stage there are only top players left, and plenty of good games to come.

You were right. Sooo sad, I'd have loved to see fraer winning the tournament, but there's always next time, I guess.
I'm not really fond of the replacement players, but that's probably the best you could hope for on such short notice. Maybe Harstem will show some good games, that'd be nice.

nah his tvz was pretty solid for a few months, 5-2 and 4-2 dongraegu who was also playing epically is no easy feat

It is pretty hard to get top notch replacements in a week too.

So far SETT TV hasn't created any live report threads if that's what you're asking. I don't know if they will release a stream schedule tomorrow (Wednesday) though. I guess it's up to GD Studio as well. Anyway, I'd say go ahead.

This tournement looks really kicking ass, though im really dissapointed that Stephano isn't going to I wonder why! Well either way! Taeja gonna get this without loosing a game! :D
I hope that fOrGG has a good showing on his new team, going to go and predict him and MC finals if the brackets work to not having one knock out the other. The line up is looking pretty damn sick though, should be a good tournament!
Interesting how some players withdraw after seeing the group. Understandable for the others but not viOlet. Sad that he's not going there. Either way, I hope a Taeja HerO final :D

Was that really the reason? If so i think it is stupid to even try to get in tournaments if you are afraid to play against certain players.
Groups looks awesome. Sad that i cant go to Helsinki this time to watch this.

Does anyone think that there could be some serious issues for the tournament with all the patch problems from 1.5.0? Or has there been a hotfix announced prior to this tournament starting?

Yeah I pretty much do also hope for ForGG to do well and show what is in him and how it's done - apart from GSL this guy did not receive any love at all which says a lot imho!

Well, I can hardly fault MarineKing for struggeling with TvZ at the moment.. I think most terrans are tbh - Taeja just makes everyone look bad at this time.

Hopefully you guys will come up with a patch downgrade crack in 1 day or I'm not too positive about what's going to happen.
I don't know, it seemed alright when I tested it. Seemed to be on right balance patch. Should be alright.. Hopefully.
Oh, really?
Well that's good, it'd be pretty funny though to watch them play on a late beta patch =D Khaydarin amulet ftw
I say 3 armor, 1 supply roaches still takes the cake when it comes to broken-ness :-) - However, this is due to how costom made maps are published, only a slight change from the mapmakers and a republish is required.
The critical part, is the lag - Battlenet is unplayable right now

EU bnet works just fine for me, and has been that way ever since the servers came up. No lag.
Dude, how is this tournament gonna work considering all the custom games are completely fucked up right now in terms of balance? 1 supply roaches means zerg will win 100% no question.

Maybe they'll just queue for the ladder and try to meet each other :D

I wish tournaments would put a link to the stream ahead of time when announcing a tournament, you are always going to waste a few minutes waiting for them to put the link up when it starts and then you have to watch the ads before you see anything. But looking forward to the tournament
