Tribes suffers from the "if you play it, it's fun to watch" problem.

I'm really enjoying it, but only because I know what's going on.

Tribes:Ascend has the most potential of any FPS in the last 10 years.

The skill ceiling is impossible to reach. The amount of communication, organization, and ridiculous game mechanics needed to play at the highest level is 3x what any other game has been able to offer in the last 10 years.

I sincerely hope HiRez gets their spectator features fixed, as this could be the best FPS E-sport for the next 5-10 years with the right spectating tools. At the moment, I think everyone can agree it's not the easiest game to watch.

Regardless, I'm afraid there's this thing called timezones, caused by living on a spherical planet that rotates while orbiting a star, and there's very little that NASL can do to fix that. Someone, somewhere, gets boned. 1:30am is not that bad.

NA had to stay up at 2 am for the west coast just to watch starcraft 1 a few years ago. People are so spoiled these days. Isn't it a 10 pm start for the UK folks? Not bad for being able to get part of Europe. Can't please everyone

Nah, closer to 12:30am. Still manageable for me, thankfully

And tribes, i get that it might be fun to play (it looks more fun to play than other fps for me). But i dont think it is a great game to watch. You just see a lot of characters making huge jumps and shooting around. (it might help if there was first person view, that you would actually see how good they are).

After watching some Tribes, I feel like it's harder to be the spectator of a cast than a player. The spectator APM to actually keep the viewing enjoyable is well over 9000.

Why are they hovering the camera in third-person-view? In an FPS it's hard to tell, if the players are playing brilliantly or not without actually seeing through their eyes. Some kind of minimap wouldn't hurt either.

mostly you attempt to hit your opponents by pre-empting the point when/where they're going to hit the ground, which the target is obviously trying to make as difficult as possible by fx. a) hitting the ground as seldom as possible and b) zigzagging to obfuscate the direction/spot they'll land at. unless you're at the savant level these guys are, you're not going to be hitting the slow projectile weapons (eg. the heavy hitters) on a flying target very often.

FPS that are 5 and more years old have better spectating and gameplay than this game. No idea why they put this game on... it's simply unwatchable

I really don't know all that much about Tribes. I played a few hours of pub games as a jug and played as a "heavy on flag" as a doombringer. So when I'm watching comp play I'mm sad when I don't see heavies being played more often. Why is that =(?

Plus its pretty rough to pub on open maps as a jug when u got pathfinders flying all around. As for spectating the game, it really is damn hard to watch. But there are moments when a team desperately tries to defend a flag cap where it's simply makes an epic scene that you could use in a highlight reel.

I guess they were looking for an excuse to bash on another game when all the BW players said similar things about SC2. People don't seem to understand that a game that requires less skill =/= trash. For example football (soccer) is the most popular sport but it is by no means the most difficult sport to master.

Depends what you mean with master: play at a decent level? Not too hard (although I am terrible at it), but play at a professional level is something else entirely, let alone play the kind of game that the messis of this world can do. It's like saying tennis is easy: it is... but that doesn't make everybody a Roger Federer.

EDIT: one thing that makes football such a popular sport is because it is REALLY easy to see what is going on. Starcraft has a similar advantage. Halo/Quake take a lot more effort to figure out why someone is winning. In that respect they are more like baseball that, honestly, is a terrible spectator sport: you really have to know the subtle details to enjoy a game (or just bring a LOT of beer).


In English "to master" generally means being able to compete with the best of the best, and you're right. The problem with team-based shooters is that they are hard to follow unless you actually played the game at a competitive level because there is no single point of focus.
