EPS Germany website

The German ESL Pro Series (EPS) is one of the oldest competitions in eSports and is going into its 20th season currently. StarCraft II has been a part of the league immeadiately after its release. Right now the fourth season is underway - the past three season were won by (P)Socke.

This season we are trying out a new format for the league: The season consists of five cups that every player in Germany can sign up and qualify for. Each participant will receive ranking points according to how far they get in each cup. When the five cups are over the top 8 players of the overall ranking will make it to the playoffs.

Each cup has an overall prize-money of €700,-

The best players in Germany (based on past seasons) are always invited. These are:
  • (P)Socke
  • (T)GoOdy
  • (Z)AkkiS
  • (Z)Delphi
  • (Z)XlorD
  • (P)kAra
  • (T)ClouD
  • (T)DBS
  • (P)RINE
  • (P)HasuObs
  • (Z)Mondragon

The EPS cups are happening on Tuesdays, starting at 18:00 GMT (+00:00).

Next up: Season is finished!

Bitterdam had 5k+ viewers for the first cup, when it was promoted on the TL calendar. The second cup wasn't so they had only around 500 viewers.

Wait... were the past three seasons won by Socke, or only season three?

edit: and is this an invite only tournament? if so, then how can new players join if the invites are based upon past seasons?
What about Phoenix and Real?

All three seasons were won by Socke.
Technically it's open to anyone, I'm not sure why Phoenix doesn't play, but Real is or was at least temporary banned from ESL due to too many penality points. It was said that he will either return on the cup tomorrow or the one next week.

the highest ranked players of the EAS (ESL amateur series) are also participating in the cups.

EAS is a ladder where you challenge people and then get points for wins and lose points for losses.
its free for everyone living in germany/austria/switzerland/liechtenstein to join.

so theoretically everyone can participate

The past three seasons were won by Socke (seasons 17-19) and I'd describe the tournament as semi-open because the invites are based on the placement in the current season. All EPS players are invited, as are the best (highest ranked) 20 players from the EAS (the league directly below the EPS). Now while there aren't any changes in the EPS during the season so the same 12 people will always be invited, it's quite different in the EAS: In addition to the 5 EPS/EAS cups, there is a ladder system for the EAS. By playing matches (outside of the cup) against other EAS players you can gain points and get a higher ranking on the laddder. So new players can work their way up to the EAS and to the cup-system although I don't know exactly how to get into the EAS in the first place (there are also some tiers below the EAS which you might have to go through first).

Regarding Real and Phoenix: Real currently seem to be in the 4th divisio of EAS and hasn't played a game yet. But I couldn't find Phoenix anywhere.

The first two cups were awesome, although i doubted the new system I was convinced immediatly. For me it's the most fun season since wc3 so far Hope it will get 5k viewers or more again!
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

I agree. I was also unsure of the system and it still sounds overcomplicated, but the games were really good to watch. So as long as it produces entertaining games all is well. Also I think the pricemoney is really good for a rather small and quick tournament.

either its a league (bundesliga) or its a cup. making a league based on cups is just stupid. who in the hole world will care to understand this when tuning into a random stream posted on TL?

why do u advertise that u are the german league if you are not a league anymore? anyone thought about that?

sadly i never cared about spectating the ESL. first of all because i grew up in clanbase and i dislike ESL because of that. second the production value is below amateur level. every random diamond ladderplayer can set up a better streamquality then ESL did. besides i would never pay to know how the highquality looks like a can only suspect it does not meet up to industry standards... or lets say amateur standards in this case.

changing this can only come down to ESL not being happy with what they had before. so they changed it up, right?

but this makes no sense to me. when i have a flat tire i replace my windows? is this the logic here ESL?

i dont know from a player perpective but as a spectator i ignore all "daily" cups because i feel its the worst format because of good games overlapping and downtimes.

i dont think anyone will care about this except the german longtime ESL fanbase.

it´s sad this is all germany can offer. german players deserve better then this.

tl;dr i dont like it ESL does stupid things.

I can agree. ESL is stuck in old times regarding the production value. Also the ESL websites are terrible and need a complete overhaul. This combined with the decline of the top players skill in Germany is not adding up to a entertaining event. You need to step up, ESL.

Quite some negativ feedback you guys are presenting there. Let's see if I can address some of your points.

As I explained in the OP we are trying to get more players involved in the EPS since it's been a somewhat steady number of names up there for quite a while. I personally enjoy seeing players like monchi or NoXouT getting a chance to prove that they should have been part of the EPS in the first place. The old qualification system was very, very annoying for new players and I believe we made a good first step to get more people to play in the highest league in Germany.

Lately the league-part of the EPS generated a lot less interest than our bi-weekly Go4SC2 cups or our qualifier cups for the Intel Extreme Masters. We saw the need to change something and actually went for a very drastic tournament system change. This is how we are trying to fill the "regular season" with actually meaningful events and so far the cups have been quite exhiting if you ask me.

I don't really understand your "production value"-criticism as it sounds a bit generic. What exactly do you mean? Our shows on ESL.tv and TaKe.tv? Could you elaborate on that a bit? Is it the stream resolution? Because I believe the quality of our free stream has actually improved a ton in the past months.
I understand that navigating our website can be quite a hustle - that's why threads on TeamLiquid are so great: I can just link to all necessary websites directly.

Who is missing? All the top players in germany (and austria [and Cloud]) are participating in the current season.

I guess his point was that the skill of the german players is low, compared to players from other nations.
