yes, we can understand each other, but obviously there are many completely different words for the same meaning.

I always thought spanish and portuguese were kinda like german/dutch. You can understand what they're saying but not speak it yourself (although a lot of dutch ppl can speak german quite well).

Generally speaking portuguese understand spanish, spanish don't understand portuguese. Its like spanish-italian, where spanish understands italian but not the other way around.
Portuguese people speak broken spanish with spanish people (again, generally and from my experience)

I'll take your word for it. Guess it seems more far fetched for me to understand Portuguese via Spanish since it is my third language compared to what it would be for your native tongue. I can understand some spanish, but the differences are big enough to make communication really hard.

This is accurate.
Portuguese speaker can understand some degree of spanish and italian, and learning those and french is easier than the other languages.
