Always excited for Texas LANs.

You mention that you are thinking about making the online qualifier double elim. Just wanted to give a +1 on that idea. With only 16 people moving over to the LAN stage from the initial 64, I think a double elim online bracket is pretty necessary. We have some legit players in this state and minimizing bracket rape should be a priority.

Either way, I'm looking forward this.

Again, I have to encourage the double elim as well. As long as there's a set organizational time for it, so that you know WHEN you are supposed to play your match etc, there shouldn't be a problem with players being home or rested to play. It would also prevent a situation like this:

Strifecro(I think he said he wanted to attend) vs a high masters player, strifecro advances.
Mid Diamond vs low masters - mid diamond advances.

This could potentially happen because of the random seeding. With double elimination, all of the grandmaster players will make it in through the winners bracket (generally) leaving the non GM players to sort themselves properly for the LAN in the loser bracket. Even if you only seeded like 4 from the losers bracket, maybe it would work.

Like the above, either way, I'm quite looking forward to this.

Just wondering... the only time i went to planet zero a couple of months ago and it was extremely cramped/small for the amount of people there. How will you be able to hold a lan with 16 players + all the starcraft 2 people that show up to watch/play/chill + all of the people that regularly show up on any given day with such a small space? But maybe there is hidden room somewhere unknown to me!?

We'll be doing some re-arranging to make more floor space, of course. ;P Right now all the arcade machines are sprawled across the floor in typical arcade fashion. That being said... we will likely sell out of spectator passes due to limited venue size... so if you want to come to the live event, I recommend you purchase a competitor or spectator pass sooner than later.

This is why we're keeping it to 16 players at the LAN for these events at Planet Zero. The building has max occupancy of 115, so we can support roughly 90-100 spectators. I have to keep emphasizing that these first two events are "small" due to the nature of the venue (and we are training so we can smoothly run 64/128/256 man events). We apologize for not being able to start off huge right off the bat--we have to save that for when we go to the convention center in April. Later seasons will likely see us renting out a large public space to hold larger LAN tournaments. For now, please be patient and grateful that, for the first time in Houston SC2 history, we have a consistent venue to springboard from.

By the way folks, if we sell out of spectator passes and you don't get in, you can still tune in to the live stream on TL.

Update: Due to popular request, the online qualifier is now double-elimination.

Appreciate it. It feels like every Texas LAN has this conversation, but glad to see it's going to be double elim.

Should be sick.

Will you seed based on ladder points/league ranking for the online qualifiers? Just curious.

Awesome changes I'm recommending this to every one of my friends.

I believe they said seeding for qualifier was random

Good question. What do you think?

We can do that, or we can randomize. Since the tournament is double-elimination, seeding won't be as important as it would be in a single-elimination format. I desire that everyone have their fair shot at advancing--I'm not so fond of throwing lower-level players to the wolves in the first round of play. I figure the best players will naturally distinguish themselves in the loser's bracket.

Folks, please chip in with your own suggestions. The success (or failure) of this first tournament's format will set strong precedents for the tournaments to come--but let's aim to get it right the first time.

Just wondering, how would you verify that those entering the online qualifier would be from the houston area or able to travel down to houston for the event? Are you going to be requiring proof that you live around houston or proof that you will travel down?

We will ask for your town of residence, and if you put Seattle, or another country, that will obviously raise a red flag and dictate follow-up.

If you are curious as to whether people will sign-up for the qualifier with the aim of winning one of the small cash prizes... well, we will be handing those out in-person at the tournament, which means the player must present if they want their winnings.

Now, if someone pays $12 just to place high in an event and not have the means of collecting any winnings... that would be rather silly, but hey, if they want to donate their money just to troll, sure. If they are a no-show, we'll simply DQ their spot and bump up the seeds to get an even 16 players.

Sorry, I'm confused... just to play in the online qualifier you have to pay $12? I thought the 16 players in the lan have to pay $12 and $5 for spectators that watch the lan. If it's $12 to play the qualifier and you're underage for paypal, how can you verify that they'll show up to planet zero to pay that off in december?

Sorry if that was not made clear; you have to register and pay the entry fee to compete in Phase I of the tournament. This is why we noted that you get spectator access for free if you register to play in the online qualifier, regardless of if you compete in Phase II or not. We encourage you attend, regardless of your placement in Phase I.

If you cannot pay through PayPal and want to register in-person at Planet Zero, you must do so before the online qualifier on 11/26. After you pay the entry fee, we reserve a spot for you in the online portion of the tournament (as well as a spectator pass for the LAN, unless you state that you will only be attending if you qualify for Phase II LAN).

I'm going to make it my job to be the huge dick here.

In the fighting game scene, Planet Zero has made it's name as the scumbag of scumbags as far as tournaments go. People not getting paid, not having SBO slots and having tournaments for them, etc.

Edit: I've warned the organizers about Planet Zero, as they're just a group of volunteers trying to do the hobby they love. I hope everything goes well.
