It is a little different though, because there is no country called "United States of Europe" or "Europestan" or along those lines.
I will note that I studied abroad in Chile, and down there, American does not refer to the US, but to the North/South landmass. So Chileans were considered American. I had to call myself "norteamericano" (North American) or "estadounidense" (United Statesean)

So saying someone is American when they're from any part of the landmass known as America is correct. Whether or not you approve of it is different.
It's a cultural thing, obviously. Canadians want to be called Canadian. They know American infers someone from the USA. It cannot be that hard to understand.
Don't tell me what I want to be called! Proud american right here.
No but seriously, who the hell calls someone from canada an american. It's pretty much implied that american means someone from the USA lol
Might as well start calling brazilians americans. How about peruvians? Those american argentines are the best.

Because he is American?
He is Canadian
Last time i checked Canada was a part of America.
Nope. This always seems to be a problem only Euros have. Canada/US/Mexico belong to the continent North America. However, only US citizens are ever referred to as Americans. That's just the facts and how it is here. I'm sure europeans have some words that are only culturally relevant to them. Well this is one of ours. You'll find exactly 0 people in this part of the world refer to a Canadian or Mexican as American just because they're from North America.
That's nice and all. But Rotterdam isn't from your part of the world and that's why he uses American in that way. That wrong?
Yes it's wrong. Tell me some words that are culturally relevant to germany and I'll misuse them because I'm not german. Is that wrong?
I guess Lorizean is just trolling. In Germany, American ("Amerikaner") is used to mean US citizen, just like you explained it for where you are from. I bet it is the same for the Netherlands, where Rotterdam is from.
Wut, I'm not trolling. At least the people I know and I myself sometimes say somebody who's from America ("aus Amerika") and are referring to the whole coninent of north+south. Though, to be fair, the term "Amerikaner" almost always seems to be referring to US-Americans.
I do not know why NASL and IEM quality of event still remain the same, now that MLG and IPL step up their production quality, no one will follow them anymore. They need better production quality, I mean.
