Here's the thing - they both had gas already, for medivacs, and they both had at least one factory. All it would have needed was to pull back a little, build a tech lab, and build a whole 4 or 5 tanks. That's all the gas that was needed. Then the tanks sit behind the marines and make any engagement really one-sided in favour of the player with tanks.

Or instead of that, they could have built a few rounds of vikings from the reactored starports they both already had, which would have taken out the medivacs and left the opponent's marines vulnerable. In fact, KawaiiRice did build a viking and it helped clean up the first big push by DeMuslim.

Nobody is saying they should have switched to mostly gas units, but surely it wouldn't have meant going that far out of their way to get a few, which could have tipped the balance way in one player's favour, as well as making for a more interesting match than the a-move marine slugfest.
