Funnily enough, only 19 of the 1024 available slots are taken as of now - but at least 15 of those are progamers worthy of participating in IPL3 already. :lol
Yeah this is pretty amazing of IGN. I expect all the top players to try to qualify for this, including just about everyone in Korea :x I wouldn't be surprised if Koreans took all of the qualifying spots if this tournament has been posted/translated on one of their Korean SC2 sites. If not, a lot of Koreans probably won't know about it so the foreigners will have a better chance of qualifying. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Koreans are allowed to participate, but their participation is almost always followed by their winning. GL foreigners, you're gonna need it!

I wish IGN would divide the qualifiers into regions so we dont end up with a situation like NASL's

NASL had one online open qualifier with one spot awarded. It's hardly comparable at all.

Yeah, 1 problem with 0 entry fee is you get a lot of random masters or even plat/diamonds just joining in to see if they can cheese out someone or stalk their favorite player... making the brackets more bloated than it should be.
So that's 1 Korean turning out. Hopefully the others won't shy away like the NASL situation.

Yeah, the response so far as been a bit underwhelming. Only like 20 people signed up with only one Korean and hardly any of the top Europeans. Is $20 too much for top players even with how well they will be compensated if they make top 2 in the qualifier? After all the Korean complaining about how the NASL was not treating the players right, and then IGN comes in with even more than what the Koreans requested, well, I expected them to be all over it. Only time will tell I suppose, but how long is registration even open for this qualifier?

Are you seriously saying 20 dollars is too much to enter a professional tournament with a 100k prizepool? Wow.

No. I'm not saying that. It was a question related to the small sign-up numbers so far.
Love this! I was wary of IPL before it started, and frankly I didn't have a reason... but as of IPL2 I have realized it is the best and most professional foreign tourney out there! GL, I'll be watching :D
This was very short notice so people who are smart signed up for the 1st one as it's likely to be the easiest with the lowest turnout. Check needs to spread the word to other koreans..wtf...why is he the only korean signed up?!

Less competition for Check
Ha good point! More koreans would just decrease check's chances of qualifying! Check is smart!
This going to be such an amazing tournament. Kudos guys, really. I hope everything goes smoothly because it seems IGN is one of the few organizations that get it.

While this is true it should be a fairly quick tournament. It's single elimination bo3 all rounds, finals won't be played I assume since top 2 receive same prize, and not many participants.

If it's full, that's 10 round of Bo3s. If you guess that a Bo3 can take minimum 20 minutes, that's 3 hours if everything runs smoothly and in a timely manner...
So I'd guess it's going to be a minimum of 5 hours, if not longer. So finish up at 5 AM if you make it all the way through. Even then, that's a generous estimate. Bo3s can take a long time sometimes... not all series are equal.
The reason why so many people aint participating is becouse the 20$ i think. Would be awesome if its 20$ for masters and grandmasters, and like 5$ for ranks below that. :D

$20 isn't too much. I think the first qualifier might have a low turn out because it was really short notice from the announcement.

Short notice wouldn't be an issue if IGN simply reached out to all the teams beforehand.
And it looks like ST.Ace has signed up. MVP.Violet as well.
Ah, I figured they picked their race when signing up.
What I don't get is why players like SlayerSDragon don't sign up for these things. If he doesn't have $20 he could easily get it from his 2000-3000 viewers, and his fanbase definitely wants to see how he can do in a tourney like this. Just really seems like a missed opportunity to me.

The ReIGN house is not set up yet (there will be a lot of coverage about it when it is), he is in Korea and he is moving to the US once we set it up (pending his Visa approval by the US government).
Edit: Artist is also a former member of fOu from SC1 and beginning of SC2.

It seems kind of weird that MarineKing can't get an invite to MLG or now this. If he's signing up for qualifiers and wants to play seems crazy not to invite him.
Wouldn't make sense to have him knock out tons of good players in these qualifiers then invite him later.

Maybe they stopped inviting him cause the places where he did get invited to (Dreamhack, IEM) he had to turn all of them down.
Also including him signing a contract for NASL and stepping out.
I want to see him in foreign tournaments as much as the next guy but you got to admit he seems a bit flakey.

You can't blame him for the NASL thing because that was a group decision which he had no say in. He couldn't go to IEM because he's still in the middle of Code A. I think the fans appreciate them giving invites to the any of the top 4 in GSL ranking and if they can't come because they're in the middle of GSL then just replace them. It's worth the risk and the chance they show up makes the tournament infinitely better.
You have to admit that the invites are strange. Why would you invite Ret but make MarineKing play in the qualifier?

We invited a diverse (geographically and racially) group of people.

Will you be inviting Koreans? It seems a bit unfair (I'm going to take a random made-up example), to invite MVP but make MKP play in the qualifier tournaments.
How are players selected? I'd think that Nerchio/White-Ra/Mana would get spots due to strong IPL2 performance but that hasn't seemed to be the case. To be fair all four invited so far did pretty well at IPL 2 so it's not like they flamed out losing in LB1.

Why need to dwell on the drama. It's not like a person is locked in for life on a team. The players do have free will - and if there aren't contracts in place to stop it from happening then too bad

MKP plays Code A semi-finals in a day and a half. Maybe he didn't want to reveal his builds to Leenock.
Winning Code A would guarantee him a seed back into Code S. I assume that's a higher priority for him right now, as it should be. He really wants to win a GSL Code S.

While all true. He signed up knowing he had code A tomorrow, plus this isn't broadcasted live so leenock can't watch any of his games. Oh well...hope he gets top 2 next one! Hope to see at least mma qualify!

The IPL 2 qualifier winners were released as soon as we cast the games, you can go to z33k now and see them.
We're keeping them hidden to not spoil anyone who wants to see the games cast. Even though this is just a qualifier, it involves more talent then a lot of normal tournaments, and should be treated as such.

Wouldn't have a button to un-hidden the bracktes fix it for everyone who doesn't mind seeing the results before watching the casts? Like me and all those people complaining already?
So who will be spoiled is simply anyone who wants to.
Yeah, I wouldn't mind knowing the results early. Like murtas suggested, the problem can be easily fixed with an un-hidden option for the bracket. It might be hard to believe, but some of don't mind being spoiled.
I know some people don't mind being spoiled, but if we allowed the option to see the results, we'd get non-stop spam in our stream channels about the results. Sorry guys you'll just have to be patient! I promise there are some sick, sick games and we will start broadcasting games soon!

Yeah i'm aware of some bm people who will spams the results, unfortunely it might happen. But wednesday isn't soon enough in sc2 world. :p

It takes their race from the 'most played race' info on bnet. A lot of people were playing on borrowed accounts so it isn't always accurate (but more often then not it is)!

playhem bracket UI needs some improvements... to put it lightly or make it idiot proof. Also nice to see Morrow back in action reaching far also the new Liquid players. IPL will be an awsome event! gratz Atlanta.
I really like to see more of Hero. Someone who can teach Mc something new about TvP should be great to watch. To be honest I'm very surprised that no Terran qualified espcially considering how many good korean terran took part in the tournament.
Holy cow, I'm looking at those brackets and am so happy this is just the first qualifier. This tourney is the real deal! Koreans, IGN production value, LAN event, 100k Prize Purse.

They are not area based, only our invites were based geographically. Also, having an event hosted in North America by default lends itself to more North American (and perhaps European) competitors, so we are glad to afford Koreans the chance to participate from their homes.
Cannot wait to see the good old casting crew giving me some HerO goodness.
Please be clear and let me know when you are casting the replays from the even IGN. Because I want to see them very, very badly and I want to give my viewership when you are live. You have a production quality and perhaps more importantly at this early stage production ideas I want to support the hell out of.
And of course, the Liquid fanboy in me want to see you cast as much Sheth and HerO as possible. Just because of general awesomeness.
1st and 2nd place finishers receive entry into the $100,000 IPL 3: Origins Championship bracket live in Atlantic City. Free flight, hotel room, and $1000 guaranteed at the event are included. Note: Unfortunately, residents of Vermont will be unable to participate in this tournament as wagering cash is illegal by state law.
Not sure why a 3/4 match was even scheduled when it has no significance? Prize money?

They are not area based, only our invites were based geographically. Also, having an event hosted in North America by default lends itself to more North American (and perhaps European) competitors, so we are glad to afford Koreans the chance to participate from their homes.
Okay, understood.
I hope that some foreigners will make it through the online qualifiers, I hope to see QXC's epic comeback as s gosu

Excellent! I hope this means that brackets for the next 3 tournaments will be visible and update live? Personally, I very much enjoy watching brackets develop over the course of a tournament, much more exciting than just taking it in in one fell swoop.

Yup they will! We heard a lot of people requesting this, so we switched around how we were planning on rolling out our qualifier information!

Good question, is this randomized? Having Ryung, Sleep, and MMA all right next to each other seems odd, probably just coincidence though.

Oh, well then that actually makes a pretty good amount of sense. Were all the ladder points taken at a screenshot time, or was it at the time the player registered?
Does participating in a qualifier (thus, becoming a "player") grant under 21 years of age access to the venue? My group wants to reserve our hotel room, buy our seats, etc, but we dont want to do it until we get full details that the ENTIRE group can attend.

If you are a player I can request access for under 21 year olds. The only people that can't attend are spectators that are under 21!
To be a player you have to be either: one of the 8 invitees, one of the 8 online qualifier winners, or one of the 256 live qualifier players.
Kinda disappointed for the 21+ age limit to attend. If the rest of the players that qualify/get invited are as good as the ones we know now, this is the kind of event I would travel for.
Will the event be streamed live in HD? Will there be a cost to view in HD? Edit: Would also like to re-ask my question about the seeding. Were they seeded at the time of registration on a per-player type deal, or was a snapshot of ladder points taken after ALL registration?
I love you guys over at IPL, bringing a huge amount of quality content to us, from IPL S1, and S2, to the Team Arena, doing dual broadcasts for NA and EU, IPL TV giving viewers a chance to have really interesting games casted, and now a spectacular live event boasting a large prize pool, and huge incentives for the best of the best in these online qualifiers.
So this weekend everyone was asking about the brackets and IGN said that they wouldn't be releasing any results but that the games would be casted during the week beginning on Wednesday. And now I come back to the thread on Monday night and find out that everyone knows the results?
edit: ic... so they were results were released anyway.

Not like it matters where on the half of the bracket they're placed. (Assuming the two halves were equal)

Yeah man he's really good but it's quite an upset that he'd win against probably the best TvP player in Korea considering the current state of the matchup ^_^ Gogo Hero!

All of the results are spoiled because it's more about hyping who's coming then hiding who is coming!

props to Tan for leaving the game... IGN should look into the maps they are using. Assuming it was a problem with the map that was used.
They made the wrong version of the map... they made the CEVO version which apparently means you can't lose from having no buildings, which is odd to say the least!
thats not fair play?! he won that game. no question. after the rules of starcraft 2 he won that game. are you serious about this? at least make it a draw. but no it was a WON game. any other tournament would give him the win

According to the standard rules of Starcraft, you lose once you're out of buildings. Tan was out of buildings and thus he lost, even if the map didn't recognize that.

What are you talking about? Tan lost, but the map was no good. He realized this and did the right thing by leaving. Even if he hadn't left I'd think the admins would have come to the same decision in any case upon reviewing the situation.
Not sure if you are misunderstanding what happened or what.

Yeah upon thinking about it I guess the casters are just casting from replays and it was the fault of the players, no big deal anyway.

I gotta say, at this point the 'broadcast' schedule of IPL qualifiers should definitely not qualify as 'live on air'. Just put up a link to the vods and to the brackets with spoiler tags and be done with it guys. How does the nth rebroadcast of the first qualifier count as a live stream? It feels like an exploit of the announcement system here on TL. why don't other regular streamers just rebroadcast their recorded streams? I am sure Idra and White-ra could easily get another couple of thousand views of their advertisements out of that.
There is new content every single day at 5 p.m. PDT / 8 p.m. EDT / 2 a.m. CEST where our casters are literally live on air. If you're in a time zone that can't view the original airing, we do rebroadcasts at 9:30 a.m. PDT / 12:30 EDT / 6:30 p.m. CEST. If you've already seen the games, you have the choice to stop watching and allow others who haven't seen the content yet enjoy it with other live spectators. You can't do that with a VOD.
hmm I was out of line then and apologize. You cant blame me too much though for getting confused; yesterday there was a commentary on a match from the first qualifier. Judging from this thread I don't seem to be the only one lacking orientation. But respect for putting out that much original content, thats quite the feat.
Would you IGN guys be willing to take out the huge IGN logo and the promo video from the Topic, and instead, put who plays who on what days with spoiler tags below to insert the winners as the games are broadcasted?
That would make things soooooooooooooo much more organized and easier for the average forum-goer.
Maybe I'm alone in this (not reading through the thread), but I feel like the cast is rebroadcasted way too much. Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that you give people who don't have a chance to watch it live to watch a rerun.
In my opinion, however, it has gone overboard. The four times I decided to tune into the IPL over the last 8 days, 3 times it has been the same segment, with dignitas.tan v tsl.symbol, and the nine dolphins shenanigans.
For one, it becomes very confusing as to what's actually going on (in real time) and what's relevant. For another, it makes me not want to tune in because it might just be the same thing over again.
Please don't misunderstand my post; I love the fact that there are rebroadcasts. I only ask they are broadcasted in a more, organized manner, if you will. Or in a way that the common TL member doesn't have to spend time wondering what's actually going on on stream.

Does it say: "IPL 3 Qual. EU", it's a rebroadcast.
i wish i could follow more of this but i am always confused on what's going on. the OP is not updated with players, time and results...
everytime IPL is running something I have no idea how to follow it and their website is just too messy for my taste.. that's my only criticism. they should do something about it to gain viewers who otherwise give up being tired trying to figure out what's going on (like me )

Nope, not always. If "EU" were the only broadcasts that were rebroadcasts, it would be easy to figure things out, but that's unfortunately not how it is.
Obviously, as soon as I click on the link, I can see if the "Rebroadcast" overlay is on the video. But the fact that I have to click on it and wait for the video to start and then find out...it's just messy, and deters me.
This, plus the fact that the OP of this thread lacks so much crucial information.
I think people want two things to be simplified and easy to access above all.
1. Bracket (ie. Who to watch) 2. Schedule (ie. When to watch)
These are the two most important topics to clearly outline in the OP imo. Alot of other information often is a barrier to people becoming invested in your tourney.
The schedule shouldn't be written out in a paragraph form. Think of something like TV guide which any simpleton can understand, such as:
Original Airing Semi-finals match: Sheth vs Hero, followed by QXC vs Sleep US times - September 4th - Sunday 8pm EST / 5pm PST European times - September 5th - Monday 2am CEST
Rebroadcast Semi-finals match: Sheth vs Hero, followed by QXC vs Sleep US times - September 5th - Monday 12:30pm EST / Monday 9:30am PST European times - September 5th - Monday 6:30pm CEST
A link at the top to simple calender, listing each day's events would be much simpler.
The bracket you guys put together is clever, but it's just not as simple as people are used to imo. I imagine the idea was to fit the bracket into the limited space of a monitor's resolution, but a resizeable, moveable bracket is just better. Something you can drag and scroll, and expand and contract in size.
You guys do a better job than MLG in this regard, but the best example of an easy to comprehend bracket is done on Liquipedia. It's so clean and does alot in a very small space, that I showed it to my older (40 to 60 y.o.), business friends (who have zero experience in gaming), and they were flabbergasted by why a business (I showed them MLG's brackets) that looking to gain viewership would make it tougher to follow their broadcast.
One other concept that I think is important is connecting information between the two. For example, if I click a match on a bracket, a sidebar or unintrusive popup showing the broadcasting schedule of that match would allow people to immediately know when to show up to watch.
That's just my 2 cents as an outsider. I'm not as familiar with the gaming business, but I love SC2 and this current match (semifinals) is the first I've been able to catch live. I'm not looking to read an entire OP for each tourney. You have a limited time of people's attention to convey all your information, before people's brains will turn off. Make it immediately clear when to watch and who to watch.
Also, I believe I'm watching a live broadcast. If so, why do the brackets spoil everything?
qxc playing like a complete boss in that game. Nonstop pressure at the start, and almost looked like he would lose out due to some fungals on vikings, but man that was an awesome game
