It will be interesting to see how far the SC2 scene in China has grown. Besides the StarsWars tournament we have almost no guage on the skill level of Chinese players. Given their strength in Brood War, WC3 and LOL I could see them eventually becoming the second best SC2 scene despite their late start.

As far as I heard from people living there, SC 2 is a failure in China. To be fair, though, that has to be qualified by the observation that even as a failure, the CHN server has 250,000+ accounts...

The Chinese government supports wc3, but they condemn gaming in general. Knowing this, it's kinda obvious that SC2 in China is kind of a fail (especially since China didn't even sell SC2... Chinese people had to buy it from Taiwan initially).

xiaOt will probably take it btw, he's the been best player in China for the most part. infi and a few others will give him some competition but F91 (though I'd love to see him win) hasn't been winning much of anything...

I think it has more to do with Blizzard's business model than the Chinese government tbh, judging by the success of games like Dota and LoL.

xiaot has being slumping a bit as of late, playing poorly. he recently lost against VA.Syc in pstl (same guy in his bracket) because of some sloppy decision making (charging blinkstalkers into immortals)

That would be quite difficult, as they use very different streaming software than NA/EU for their tournaments, which is a constant source of headaches for people wanting to watch Chinese games. It doesn't work for half the people who try it, and for the other half, lag is frequent and often severe.

Plus, I don't think people would really be interested in following SC 2 from China since they have virtually no presence in international tournaments and isn't the best country in terms of skill. Yeah, players on the level of XiaoT and Xigua can probably give foreigner pros a run for their money, but any kind of cross-server play between China and the rest of the foreigner world is fraught with network issues and they can't generally attend live events due to visa and travel fees, either.

The one thing Chinese players do have going for them is a potentially much larger viewer base for tournaments that try to involve them, but the state of SC 2 in China makes even this kind of iffy.

Having said that, there are a couple of Chinese & English members on TL who can certainly do a lot more for the scene if they could update readers on the events and provide instructions for viewing them.

Kind of like what Chinese members do on GG.net for Dota, if anyone else's familiar with that.

Yes that's what I'm going to do in the future and I'm currently writing a blog/article about the SC2 scene in China, including introduction of progamers, teams, tournaments etc, and something about Chinese esports in general.
Also I may start casting some Chinese players games but not sure if I can do well with my English speaking skill.

xiaOt is probably Code A/S level with his usual skill, but he's been underperforming for a while now. Meanwhile, I've seen a number of XiGua's games and while he's not bad, his play strikes me as a bit mediocre. I hope that it's just that he hasn't had a worthy opponent to ply his trade on yet, though, because he's been getting a little hyped lately.

Anyways, anyone want to fill me in on why xiaOt, XiGua, Comm, etc. have an iG tag? Thought they were Nv --> CCM. Did I miss another team change?

If they would just start entering global events, they would be top tier.

Infi is such a baller..makes it to the regional finals in two games - love that guy, but I wish he'd focus on SC2 rather than Wc3

Pj retired, and after WCG 2010 Lx probably did too.

Lx gave two pretty good games to Flash there.

(P)xiaOt forfeited. Exact ReasoN still Unknown.
Any Way,
this guy SaiD he would participate in GSL 2011 when it was 2010 Summer.
Later he SaiD he would go after Chinese Spring Festival.
After that he SaiD would go Apr or May.
Consequently, he changed his mind and promised to go after WCG.
And today, he forfeited.

That's a lot of forfeits, actually.

xiaOt, JiFeng, and Infi? I'm baffled.

EDIT: Forgot Infi forfeited for the WC3 spot. That leaves the other two to explain away. Hm.
EDIT2: Well, I guess they could have simply been late and got disqualified. WCG counts those as forfeit losses, if I'm not mistaken. Hope someone clears this up in the near future, as I'm just speculating.

ok, sorry I slept yesterday. Now I update the final results of Day 1 on post above.

(P)(P)xiaOt forfeited because his clan CCM was bought, and he is going to be manager/coach of SC2 team.
PS: a lot of Chinese audience including me felt disappointed about xiaOt...

(Z)JiFeng forfeited because he is retired.

(T)Infi did NOT forfeited, he just simply lost all his games, maybe because he had to play both SC2 and War3.

Manager/Coach? So he won't be playing actively or at least not that much? Would love to have more information about that because xiaOt stopping to play would be a shame.

Edit: Seems like his Battlenet-profile is quite inactive aswell: http://www.sc2ranks.com/cn/124435/NvxiaOt
Hope he uses a new one or something...

today's detailed results are being updated, pics and interviews are coming up later in the night, and mod please change the title to "WCG China National Finals Day 1"
and 2 FYIs: xiaOt forfeited his matches due to his lack of practicing and transition into management role of the new iG progaming team.
Jifeng forfeited because his injury in the feet, he did not retire, since he is not actually a sc2 progamer, the Legacy team is a amateur SC2 team.

xiaOt is already 25, 1 year older than me, he just played BW very early. His problem is not his talent or effort, he is not very consistent, either in WC3 or SC2.

It's possible the guy who bought out CCM specifically appointed him as the manager of iG, and he accepted the position. (If you haven't kept up with the news. CCM was bought out just a few days ago, I believe.) But yeah, this is rather depressing.

Ah okay

I guess you can take XiaoT out of your sig since he's not a player anymore ;; or you can keep him as a coach/manager or something maybe

Yeah. He was my favorite Protoss player too, so it's doubly disappointing.

I'm hoping he'll still decide to play competitively, maybe once his managerial/coaching duties lighten up. I mean, Choya still does quite well for himself despite being a manager and a coach, so a guy can dream, I guess.

no they aren't.....did you look at the brackets, most of the players were zerg in this tournament, and terran and protoss have no shortage of tournament results, your just too biased to notice them.

Not surprised. His ZvP is guaranteed to be good, given that he plays against Chinese Protoss all the damn time. It's either that or he wouldn't have made it as far as he has in the scene.

Xigua's no stranger to pro-gaming. He was formerly known as Rabbit when he played WC3 and represented China in 2006 for WCG after being 2nd place in China's Grand Finals. Not really surprised to see someone who has that much dedication going far. I think he has a chance of snapping top 3 in Busan.

On a side note, Terran is underwhelming in China. Pretty disproportionate

Is xigua the infamous zerg who is supposedly leagues above IdrA ? (i think xiaot said something about his zerg partners);p If yes gonna be interesting

He is leagues above IdrA...the whole (former) CCM team had a practice schedule equivalent to oGs, XiGua recently won that $23k tournament and he beat IMYongHwa in a series, he hasn't had a lot of games against foreigners/Koreans but most of the Chinese progamers living in team houses are pretty close to the Koreans in terms of skill level, which is leaps and bounds ahead of foreigners.
