Hi everyone! I'm beyond excited and proud to finally announce the evolution of ASCWeekly.com into Stim.TV! Many thousands of you have played in our tournaments, and we very much look forward to continuing that with our new format.
What is New? The biggest change is our partnership with Playhem.com - they are an amazing organization and will be handling our registration/brackets moving forward, as well as providing the 250$ in prize pools every week! Aside from that we are putting more effort and focus into bringing you more Pro-gamer events, such as showmatches and mini-tournaments we've brought you in the past.
I can't thank everyone enough for participating in our tournaments and making them such an outstanding success. I have a profound love of eSports, as many of you do - and having the ability to not only participate in it, but also bring it to every single skill level and player is tremendously satisfying. I hope you guys keep playing, keep watching and supporting us so we can do even more

Come check out the new ASCW page. Bigger and better with new and improved prizes. Great for all skill levels but even better fun. Even comes with after parties for those who just want to play some great games.
|
two questions: on which server is it played? how do you catch smurfers?
|
For now we are only on North America and Latin American servers. We'd love to expand into Europe next. We have been looking for people to help us do that - that search continues, but rest assured we would absolutely love to
In regards to smurfs, yes - Playhem does a very good job of making sure everyone is in the proper league, and has a few tricks up it's sleeve. To back that up, we have admins that check players match history, and we also of course take accusations from players that might do their own research seriously.
We are very active about it, and while in the 28 weeks that we've been doing this, several have slipped past our methods, not a single one has ever won a tournament, moreover now with the increased level of security thanks to Playhem, it will be rare and always taken very seriously

Hell yeah, I just started practicing again after carpal surgery. This looks like a cool site for finding tourneys. Just looked around and I like it! Only diamond for now, but hopefully I can get into the masters tournaments soon. See you guys next week, time to go hit up those practice games ^_^

Just signed up for Bronze/Silver, this'll be my first tournament. Looking forward to it, I think it'll be fun!

Awesome news! ascw was one of the best run tournaments out there, and always a blast to participate in, even I am terrible
Congrats all involved, and I'll be there on Tuesdays

I've always loved what ASCWeekly did, and will probably still play in your tournaments when I can. But I'm not sure how I feel about this Playhem thing, being mandatory and all.
Edit: I also don't agree with those kind of prizes for the lower levels.

Thanks for the kind comments, I'm curious though what are your concerns about our partnership with playhem?
It's completely free to play, and there is nothing mandatory at all. Basically, they have a really slick registration / bracket system - which helps tremendously. We had a easy to use registration/bracket system with ASCWeekly, but Playhem took it to a whole new level. There really is no downside, so we're super happy to be partnered with them on this

I have a feeling that these tournaments will now be loaded with smurfs. $50 is an awesome prize, especially for a bronze/silver level tourney. What are your plans on dealing with this?

That's correct. To my knowledge, there is a hope to create a European division of the tournament, but the necessary staff requirements haven't been filled just yet. It would be the most obvious next step though. =)

I am currently rank 1 diamond, but I play masters players and I have a feeling that next week I will be promoted to masters. Can I still sign up for the diamond tournament?
|
Seems exciting The prize pool is just right for a the lower leagues and I'll enjoy tuning in.. or registering. Cheers!

Your league at the time of the tournament will be the absolute factor.

What if I don't play my season 3 qualifier til after weds? Are you requiring everyone to play their placement pre tournament?

Yes, you really should be ranked at the time of the tournament. Don't see that as any kind of sacrifice. What active player wouldn't want to play their placement match at the start of Season 3?

Just curious because I'm right on the line of diamond and masters.

hope i dont get smurfed, but i'll give it a shot nonetheless :D thanks for this!

Not to rag on the tourney, I think it's great but does anyone else feel this is a bit of a inherent flaw in the league brackets?
If he stays in diamond he has a good chance of winning assuming no smurfs caus he will be playing lower level people / people around his skill.
If he gets placed into masters he's still sorta close to a diamond level but will now be facing GMs.
The prize pool is small enough it's not a big deal and its obviously mostly for the fun of it but it does sorta restrict anyone who's above diamond but isn't near a GM level.
I suppose the other way of looking at it is you get to have the honor of getting your butt kicked by a GM and those are the matches people will watch.
Is this seen as a non significant problem because masters players are a smaller % of the total active sc2 population, or is it just a problem that can't really easily be fixed.
Probably the most ideal solution would be to divide lower masters and high masters, with low masters playing with DIA. and high masters playing with GM but I can see how that could begin to make things complicated.

I need to get off work earlier so I can play in this...

It's an inherent problem of all tournaments that cater specifically to the non-best players. Take Huk for example, he can only get better to win. And getting better will cause him to win more. For a plat player, he wants to get better, but not so better that he can be promoted to diamond to win. So in a sense, by getting better, he has a worse chance of winning.
If you break it down into high/low, that's even stupider and more biased. Ladder points pretty much have nothing to do with mmr until everyone gets rid of bonus pool. And really, it's exactly the same problems of dividing by leagues except now you made up your own even more arbitrary divisions.

You pretty much nailed it with a lot of points you made and that will lead me to prefacing this with the unfortunate truth that there really isn't an ideal solution no matter how you swing in.
There will never be one optimal way to split the divisions, especially the Masters/Grandmasters area for everyone to feel like they are at the top of the pack. For those low Masters players that are challenged with the feat of defeating some of the best that NA has to offer, the biggest thing it can offer you in my mind is that wonderful experience of playing great players, even professionals. And as you said you can be casted playing against those fantastic players that everyone wants to see play.
It helps you to gauge your own level of play. It helps you understand that Masters is certainly not the cap and it helps players understand that there is still a huge opportunity for improvement.
The last point I want to make in that vein is that upsets do happen. I have seen low Masters players defeat the likes of coLRSVP by exploiting weaknesses that they picked up on.
No one can win all the time, not even the best and the feeling of success would be that much greater if you can pull it out against the best of the best, not just the sub-par. And that is the most important part of tournaments like this to me. The experience and the challenge. That enormous prize pool just gives you one more drive.
And even if you take all of that away, there really isn't a better solution in my mind.

As many precautions as possible are taken to insure that there is no smurfing within the tournament by both Playhem and Stim.tv. Match histories are thoroughly checked and if a suspicious situation does arise, greater care is taken to ensure that there is no foul play involved. Replays and match history are examined closely and the players are questioned.
Unfortunately, there is no full-proof anti-smurf method, but despite that whatever can be done is being done.
|
Very well said DarkenedLite, thanks for that
And just to reiterate, we're not ignorant of the fact that smurfs will occur - we've been doing this for 28 weeks straight already without missing a single tournament, we've cut our teeth on all levels of tournaments.
We don't take it lightly and as Darkened outlined, we are prepared

host can pick what brackets they like but id prefer bronze silver gold being a bracket then plat and diamond then masters gm

While there is no optimal way to split up leagues, and I understand that you want to have a prize incentive even for lower leagues, the current split is pretty darn ridiculous. You are awarding bronze/silver level players a weekly chance to win $50? None of these players are playing SC purely for the money, but $50 is still a pretty big deal. Even without adding in the problems smurfing will cause, this is completely unfair to everyone who is not a silver league player. Why is it unfair to platinum as well? Because you're 10x better than a silver player, but you're still fighting for the same prize.
If it was completely up to me anything that is not master's would not have any cash prize. Lower leagues should still have prizes, but they should be stuff like free coaching, subscriptions to sites, or season tickets to GSL/NASL etc.
If you really want to incentivize lower leagues with cash prizes as well, I guess that's ok, but please reconsider the prize pool distribution for the respective tiers. It should be Masters/GM >>> Diamond > Gold/Platinum > Silver/Bronze. Something like $200 - $30 - $10 - $5.
Also what's the prize payout for each bracket? I hope it's not winner takes all.
|
Anihc you bring some excellent points. Rest assured that me and the staff are quite restless about the backlash from the community in regards to the lower league prize pools.
I can say for sure right now that there will be changes. Will they be for next week, or for the following week? I don't know - that's where we're at right now...we've already announce this event, and so we're not sure if we want to go and change it on people. That being said, many people are not happy with how much we're giving to the lower leagues.
We'll have an announcement shortly
Thank you all for your support, your love, and your criticism...we need all of it in equal portions in order to grow. Wow, that was profound...someone quote that!

Just saw your latest tweet, looks great that you guys are valuing community input so much. I definitely agree a prize pool is important even for a bronze/silver etc tournament, but the size of this encourages smurfing a bit too much IMO and would lead to real problems and probably a full time job of smurf detection, whereas something more like $25, w/ $20 to winner $5 to second place, and a bigger pool for Masters/GM is win win =).
|
Nice site, looks great. Keep up the good work!

this sounds like an amazing idea. As a low masters player I am sure I will get killed but the experience would still be great and would be good motivation

Thanks everyone for the great comments...glad to know that you guys appreciate how much we care Makes the many many hours all of this takes to setup very much worth it!
Stay tuned for updated details!

Man this is a great incentive to ladder. I remember participating in some of the first ascweeklys and they were tons of fun. Hoping this will attract more people.
|
I heavily heavily agree with Anihc, when he says, It should be Masters/GM >>> Diamond > Gold/Platinum > Silver/Bronze. Something like $200 - $30 - $10 - $5. Giving 50 dollars to lower league winners and giving 50 dollars to the diamond, and only 100 to the masters division is really not fair. 200-30-10-5 is actually a very nice set up. Its not really a problem about smurfing, but more of a problem about the skill level. People from Bronze to plat winning 50 bucks, where a decent or even high masters player will win almost nothing in their master-grandmaster tournament, since they may not be able to compete against the grandmasters. The skill level of the masters is clearly better than a bronze to plat, and 50 bucks is quite a bit of money to be giving to very low league players.
Yes, it is good to encourage players of all leagues to join tournaments, and I'm not trying to discriminate other leagues, but its a bit unfair, that a casual low level player can get more money from the prize than say, a semi competitive, or even high level master player who can't win/2nd/3rd/4th place the super competitive master-gm tournament.
|

Will the website change when we get a little closer to night of the tournament? Thanks.

Tournament going live in a few hours We've adjusted the prize pools as you can see the edit in the OP
|
Thanks for responding to community feedback. 2 things now:
1. Where did that extra $100 go now?
2. $50 for diamond is still too much. It's kinda weird that you're putting such a big prize pool only for 1 mid-tier league. It's completely unfair to low masters players. I'm not even asking you to give it all to Masters, you can split it for an hour of coaching for the bronze/silver league and an hour of coaching for the diamond tier. Maybe you can keep a $5-10 prize pool for diamond just because you previously had a $5 prize for it.
|
Gotta agree with him again ^
Very good changes to the prize pools, but even high masters players might not be able to ever cash in on the master-gm tournament, while diamond players could recieve 50 dollars. 10-15$ + coaching would be a realistic prize for diamond.
Amazing tournament you guys have running here, and I plan to participate in the Master-GM tournaments soon!

Exactly what DarkenedLite said, sorry I didn't add that to the OP!
the 100$ will be going to a weekly showmatch, so now we are truly supporting the entire community from bronze to grandmasters to pro-gamers every single week.
Also as Darkened said, the distribution is not set in stone, we also feel that Diamond is a little high - the issue is lowering it and then making up for it with some kind of other prize, like more coaching perhaps but we need to lock down that deal first. That is very close to happening, so we will likely be looking at a change to diamond next week
Again, thank you everyone SO much for your comments, your overwhelming amount of emails etc. It warms my heart that you guys care so much, and it makes everything worth it!

How come it's full? ASCweekly let a bunch of people signed up...
|
You guys could put some of the diamond tourney into a 2v2 tourney once a week open to all skill levels, or just the lower ones, like 50/50 split in cash between the two. Or you could put 25 into a game of the week or something. Or use it to raffle to viewers. Just a few ideas, dunno how other people feel about them.
|
On July 26 2011 14:23 Xplitcit wrote: How come it's full? ASCweekly let a bunch of people signed up... There are some limitations with the Playhem system and for that reason it was restricted to 64 sign-ups this week, but that is planned to change next week and beyond, the goal being to open up entry for 128 and possibly 256 man brackets in every level of play.

We've considered 2v2 and clan battle type formats, but currently, the lack of interest for those areas and how hard it would be to find full groups for those types of events.
Some good suggestions though. :D

So the playhem site randomly says after check in that we're using different brackets. Can't find my opponent anywhere since the new brackets use challonge and no character codes are there. Can't find him in playhem and stimtv channel. I get FFL so I ask admin what's up. Says I'm too late.
Cool stuff, great fucking time.

The.Doctor, I'm sorry you had some issues. We've been doing this for 29 weeks now, and this week was the first time we had issues like this. With new technology and upgrades inevitably comes some issues. I assure you it will be better next week, just as it was for the past 28 weeks. We work our butts off to make this the smoothest run online tournament there is.
I sincerely hope to see you back next week

Details for week #30 have been posted on Stim.TV and updated in the OP of this thread!

See you all next week!

You can actually find most of the oldest brackets on challonge though I don't know about the brackets after they switched to the integrated bracket

That's correct, they can all be found here.

Last night went off without a hitch, I am super excited. Playhem's brackets made it a BREEZE to run the tournament. From an administration perspective, I could not be happier.
Tonight we ramp it up to RO128 though with the Gold/Plats, so the stress test continues - but I don't forsee any issues based on how easily it coped with the RO64

Hey, Im a diamond player at the moment (got demoted after season1) but Im playing a few masters and doing well. Hence, one can say Im in the gray zone of diamond slash masters. I will keep laddering till the 24th but if I do get promoted before then can I just cancel my regesteration and apply for the masters/grandmasters tourney???
|
As long as we don't see a string of ladder losses on your account and you are laddering consistently, we accept whatever league Blizzard has put you in.
There are a lot of hints at a smurf, but the best way to see really is ladder activity, so as long as you're on the up and up in that regard, you should be totally fine playing in diamond
Yes if you do get promoted you can cancel and join in the masters division no problem!
GL HF!

Great tournaments thus far this week, don't miss out on tonight's diamond tournament - $15 to winner - $5 to 2nd place!

If I can make it, it will be the first time for me competing in a Master/Grandmaster tournament. I'm woefully out of practice, but wish me luck anyway. >_<

This is bull. If I am a top level diamond player (not hard at all to get to), I am guaranteed a free $15 bucks a week. The moment I improve ever so slightly, I go down to 0% chance at $100 a week when I hit Master. After hundreds of hours of practice, I would finally be playing at a GM level, and capable of competing for top 3 with a chance of $10 - $100. This is simply discouraging player from improving. Why would I bother playing at a Master's level when I could play a a diamond and receive monetary benefits from playing as such?
It's basically: $$$ for diamond nothing for master $$ to $$$$$$ for GM
:\

:\ Well it's not like they should exclude GM from masters as there isn't enough GM people that want to play so they will no matter what combine GM with Masters so tuff luck man on that. It's not like these guys are getting this money to pay for themselves to live. This is just a generous offer from the league to provide this money what so ever. Its not like $15 dollars is a lot for diamond, Its like hey if you win this league you can go buy yourself a nice dinner.
|
OP updated with registration details for next week :D
|
To answer your question 1.01 - we don't really have much of a choice. There aren't enough GMs to warrant a tournament for their own, and honestly we see a LOT of masters beating GMs in our tournaments, which indicates to us that the level of competition is at a good and solid level. Masters aren't just necessarily getting rolled, whereas putting Diamonds in with Masters would be truly devastating for the majority of Diamond players.
ideally we'd love to do a tournament for each league, but unless you're willing to hire us another few team members, unfortunately it just can't happen yet

Not really sure what you expect people to do about this. Not offer monetary prizes for diamond? What do you suggest that is offered otherwise? Would diamond players really want coaching from hotkeyit.com like the other low league tournaments win?
Oh yeah, theres also a rule so you can't win a tournament multiple times...
If a player plays and consecutively wins two (2) tournaments of the same division, that player will be automatically added to our “List of Progression” (or LoP). Players on this list will play in the next league up. For example, if a player plays and wins the Gold/Platinum tournament two weeks in a row, that player will be added to the LoP. Because this player is at the Gold/Platinum level, he will be disallowed from participating in the Gold/Platinum tournament. Instead, he will be allowed to participate in the Diamond level tournaments.
You don't see the same people winning the tournaments often. Plus I have seen plenty of masters players win the M/GM tournaments so it is definitely not impossible. Not to mention.... it is 15$.... is it THAT big of a deal to call it "bull"?
|
Shouldn't the diamond tournament prize be increased? I mean it's like way too low compared to the master/gm. What happened when they all were 50 dollars? I would rather have 50 dollars diamond and 100 master/gm.

I looked around this thread and visited the site but I couldnt find an answer to my question:
How long do the tournaments run? Just as a general rule, do the (US) tournaments run from 9pm to 1am or so? Is it like 1 game at 9pm then you have to wait until 10pm to play your second? Or can you start whenever your next opponent is ready?
I'm a silver leaguer without a ton of time (too bad D: ) so if anyone could describe the typical experience of playing in this tournament I would really appreciate it =) Thanks!

Great question...the tournaments can vary pretty wildly to be honest...but in general don't usually go much longer than 2-3 hours, average is ending around 12:30-1AM or so.
You can always start whenever your next opponent is ready you don't need to wait for any specific time. All the info is on the brackets, so you can just go right ahead.
The only thing that might hold you back a few minutes is if an admin knows the game we are currently casting will end in the next 5-10 min he may ask you to wait a few minutes to start so the casters can jump into your game, which leads to less downtime for the stream and more back to back games

Hey, it sounds fun, and I'd like to join the gold/plat one, because that's what level I play on my "smurf" guest pass account, and playing in the gold/silver league I feel would be unfair, however I can't play with said account, as it's run out of play time, so I tried to sign up with my main, and it won't let me in, 'cause I'm Silver there.
Any help?

Unfortunately you'll have to sign up for the league that your account is associated with. We do look at match histories and take complaints very seriously, so if you think you are way too good to be in our silver league, I'd suggest waiting until you get it to gold, otherwise it will result in a Disqualification.
