Woah, if this is true, then that really sucks. It's nearly been 3 years.
Well they gave me the hardware part of the prize on the event itself (+ a little tile with ranking/details on it etc) and the money would be send to my account later.
I just never got it (and they don't reply to emails either), but yeah don't want to derail the topic, just throwing it out there.

So you are basically saying that if you won 400 euro's, you get hardware and no money? Because it is given in hardware? What a shame on your tournament then.

$7700 in prizes doesn't always mean just prize money. It could include hardware as well.

It might be lowered with 50%. The Gathering have something called foreigner ticket for a normal seat, but for some reason they didn't add that for pro gaming. We are looking into if we can lower it with 50%.
Oh, TG! Nostalgia. Reading this certainly brings me down memory lane to year 2000ish. Hope this tournament will attract some great names, despite the rather high entrance fee. Good luck everyone involved!
The Gathering is awesome fun, I never noticed 'pros' had their own gaming area, in my experience you should just buy out a whole row, then sell the tickets to your friends who u wana sit with, if your going, BOOK A HOTEL IN ADVANCE, sleeping arrangements there are terrrrrrrrrible. You have to battle 1000's of peoples for a space to setup a sleeping bag. All the hotels nearby will sell out closer to the start of the venue.

There will be a gaming area this year, with computers and the likes for the gamers to use during the tournament.
There is probably no room in the motel, but you have some cabins close by which are available. And I believe there is one or two extra hotels nearby.

ROFL btw why is norway so expensive, whats the minimum wage there?
The top 3 richest countries in the world per capita is Quatar, Luxembourg and Norway. In Norway there are few large private fortunes and no real poverty, basically everybody has money. That affects the prices.
There is no minimum wage, we have unions to negotiate that stuff.

There was definitely a stream last year, but if it was like, proper broadcasts from the game tournaments, I do not know, since I watched them live. I would guess there is definitely something in the works.
They should lower the entry price for progamers, get Day9 and someone almost as awesome as him, and get a really good quality stream. Do it like DH did, that was one hell of a tourney.

You are wrong, Hellfragger is the ones responsible for paying out the price.

Do you have a source for that Roflhaxx? I think roddern played in the compo, so I guess he knows better than you(unless you are a TG - official or something).
Also, the casual player go there for the experience, but I don't think the same is for the pro-gamers that also want to earn some money.
The source-tournament created an unique situation afaik, since it wasn't TGs own tournament. I know there have been some trouble with the payment there. But afaik its in the making = )

Found a post, was on another comp when I posted that but I will try and find it!
They did pay out in cheap hardware, but the players didn't want anything to do with that. I hope they pay out, but I have learned by now that esport is a shady business, so I don't expect anything.
Nevertheless, I hope and think it will be a great tournament for sc2, looks like they take it more serious. Just need to lower the entry fee.

Uhm, there is(and always has been) a foreigner ticket that is much cheaper, so I don't think this is anything new for this year?
It seems the progamer-ticket still is pretty expensive, go figure. But the event have attracted some foreign progamers before, not sure how much they payed though.
Anyways, it's nice that SC2 eventually get some special treatment, with this being a new game and all.

And im sure having progamers there would attract more regular lan nerds too.
What you need to understand is that The Gathering is a LAN Party with emphesis on the LAN Party bit and not a esport LAN like DH. Even if its expensive it always draws 5000+ gamers and nerds in general. However with esport being what it is it also supports progamers through the progamer ticket which wont let you have a regular seat, but will give you a tournament computer. Also the foreigner ticket is cheap since you guys don't have as much money as us!

The entrance fee is pretty standard for something of this size in Norway. What I am wondering is if the tournament is supposed to be something for the regular LAN participants, or if they are trying to get pro-gamers this year. If its the last, the pro gamers should get free entrance as the tournament will be part of the entertainment, and the pro-gamers won't be there for the full event, but just for the tournie.

It will always be a LAN party over a esport lan, you forget why The Gathering started
Its not like The Gathering will have problems filling the tournaments if the progamers dont turn up, there are like 5200 players that can join if they want
Besides if you're traveling from abroad to TG, 50 Euros is the LEAST of your worries rofl.
The Gathering isn't really any eSport event, sickload techno music all the time, tickets come out around December and info about prize pool is out one month before the event (February/March), so most of the time it's impossible to get foreigner tickets (they cost 70$, but it's BYOC) if you wait for prize pool to be announce.. Kekekeke go get sponsored by QPAD and you can play at their stand, they've been there each year now since 06 or something (In 08 MYM's Polish CS team played the CS compo at their stand). glgl
I really hope they let everyone that want to participate in on the turnament, but with seeds so players like for instance morrow if he decides to come get's in on the later stages with bo3's so we don't see great players cheesed out early in bo1 matches.
I also hope we can get some streaming going with commentary, so us at the gathering and people not participating can watch norways best players duking it out, we're basicly better than koreans you just never see us play!

The Gathering have announced rules, what maps that will be used and information about how many players that will be participating in the event!
There will be 64 players participating limit, where 32 players will qualify through online qualifiers, 16 players will be invited and 16 players will qualify through a BYOC-qualifier at The Gathering.
For the event the following maps will be played ( note that maps like Lost Temple might be switched out with their "new version", Shattered Temple).
Shakuras Plateau Scrap Station Lost Temple Metalopolis Xel`Naga Caverns ICCup Testbug Re Pawn
The rules for the tournament have also been released, but they can be changed at any time.

I must say that I am not satisfied with this decision bo1 is the worst cheesefest there is, and you will risk that some noobs cheese out players that actually have some talent. I'd rather have the compo start a few hours earlier and have bo3.
Noone will ever love Bo1 but time constraints are time constraints.. It's great that you would prefer the tournament start a few hours earlier.. lol but what about the extra costs associated with that?
Not a fan of entry fees but the prize pool is very awesome

The whole point in having qualifiers is so you have the best players in your tourney otherwise you could just let anyone in, bo1 works against this. So easy for the worse player to just allin and roll the dice, and anyone can lose to a allin just ask idra.

We have online qualifiers before the event, where most of the players will be able to qualify. The main tournament starts with bo3 in the groupstage.
Yes it is a risk with a lot of cheese in the BYOC-qualifiers, but we have to make some choices that won't be liked by everyone.

cheese happens in sc why are you people so worried about pro's getting cheesed out. Its as if it affects you financially to see a top pro gets cheesed. I personally think its great. They are pro's they should be able to deal with cheese. I think people fail to realize that its better for the community if some random guy who doesn't play much cheesed his way to a victory, then some grizzled pro who plays all day everyday. The former would bring wayyy more new people to the game which= money
First went to TG in 1996 and last time in 1998, but actually going there again this year.
Regarding prices - they are that high because of the cost of everything in Norway. With 3% unemployment and the lowest pay you get is about 20$ it's like that. The wages would be even higher if not for the about 100.000 workers from Sweden*, Poland, etc.
*Actually Norway and Sweden have typically exchanged work-force in good/bad times. About 15 years back, norwegians went to sweden to get a job.

Why does that lead to more new people? :S Seeing mediocre players play games that last for 5 mins tops or games with really good players duking it out in awesome and exciting long games?!

Personally, I'm worried about pros getting cheesed out by lesser players because they will not be able to provide pro level games for me to watch. I also don't see why lesser players should bring more people to the game; why would newbies want to watch lesser players when they could also watch well-practiced pros? By your logic, millons of people would prefer Rebecca Black over Kylie Minogue.
I went to the gathering every in 1999, 2000 and 2001. was loads of fun, definitely recommended for anyone who wants an all-out lan experience with everything that entails of horrible hygiene, horrible music, and fun fun fun times playing computer games.
I got second in the 1999 starcraft tournament and third in the 2000 2v2 tourney as well! (knocked out by the awesome might of sven+slayer.) not sure I recommend it for anyone going there just to play the tourney though, and anyone older than 16 would be adviced to rent a hotel room or at least have some facilities outside the actual gathering.

I read the thread, did you? The prize money issue was not from a TG compo, but someone else hosting a tournament on TG, do you understand the difference? It's quite common for tournaments to give some hardware out, but if you think this means that TG will award $5100 worth of hardware to first place in starcraft you aren't really getting it.
Also, I got my prizes from The Gathering when I competed. In fact, I think the gathering is the only tournament to ever have given more prizes than they were supposed to - me and my brother got like 1000 crowns more than the prize pool indicated in the 2000 2v2 tournament. Don't remember exactly what the prize pool was and how much we got, but we definitely got more than we were supposed to.

AziDon himself had this to say about the event
Hi my name is AziDon and I am the shoutcaster of Praetoriani. I am at the moment a full time caster and therefore very devoted to my work. People consider me to stand out because I not only cast the game I also play it as a master league player. I try to share my knowledge and passion for starcraft as much as possible throughout my casts, and it should be suitable for new aswell as experienced SC2 players. I hope you guys want to tune in and have fun with me as I'm casting this awesome event!
The groups have also been announced, there will be a few changes to them, because some of the qualified players might not show up.
We hope every player and spectator will have a great event
Heh yeah. I hope a Norwegian wins the entire thing. But with the "foreign" foreigners being so strong, it will surely not be easy! Lets all root for the best games!

I'm sure some people would love to watch, but are turned off by the lack of effort in this thread.
The problem with the casters in norwegian, in my opinion, is that there are 2 good ones, and 2 bad ones, and they switch around a bit. Hopefully we'll get the good combination with the finals, but I don't think that will happen for because one of the good ones where a step-in (If I remember correctly).
wow, looking at the bracket the first thing that comes to mind is, who did the seeds? Because getting Sjow, Thorzain, Nightend in the same side of the bracket while looking at the other one, no kidding that SaSe simply crushed it.

Playoffs were preceded by group-play - see MYM's coverage of the event. The groups distribution was possibly a bit unfortunate, but I'm sure SaSe's bracket wasn't devoid of skill. Bischu from SaSe's bracket seems to be quite a good player judging purefly from his past results, while Chi managed to take of game off SaSe.

Hopes this provides a better overview than brackets. And sorry if I got any races wrong (required a bit of research)
Good job, would be great if you updated the liquipedia page of the tournament: The Gathering Easter 2011 , it's going to be much easier for people to find the information that way.

Argh, so you're saying I spent 1,5 hour doing this when the Wiki-page already had a proper bracket and most of the races? :D
Didn't realize a Wiki-page would be up right away. Good stuff
