FXOpen is proud to announce their first invitational tournament, the FXOpen Path of Ascension. Featuring $900 in cash prizes this two-day event boasts the most prodigious talent from both the North America and Southeast Asia servers playing in the one tournament. In addition, we will see some handpicked European players competing to try and claim the $500 first prize.
There will be full live coverage on both event play days as well as coverage of most matches from the tournament on UnstableTV YouTube by the way of VOD.
Format
Day 1 Friday, Dec 10 11:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00)
Day 2 Saturday, Dec 11 11:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00)

Ruleset [Draft]+ Show Spoiler [Major Rules] +Terms of participation By accepting your invitation and competing in the event you agree to the following conditions: - You may be forfeited if you are not ready to play later than 30 minutes after the scheduled match time. - You will not leak your replays until an official replay pack has been released. - You will comply to the other rules detailed here. - You will not publicly slander or reproach any of the staff or sponsors associated with this tournament on any public medium.
Map Selection Each player will vetoe one map from the 5-map pool posted above. The player in the topmost position on the bracket will vetoe the first map. The three remaining maps will form the maps for the series. An additional round of vetoes will be used on the 3 maps (with the opposite person picking first) and the final remaining map will form the first map of the series. Games played on incorrect maps will not count at all and must be replayed on the correct map. Loser picks from the maps chosen by vetoe after the first game.
Walkovers Walkovers for Round 1 will be awarded after 30 minutes of no-show unless something has been worked out and an admin notified beforehand that a player is late, pending a reasonable excuse.
Disconnects Games disconnecting within 3 minutes will be replayed. Disconnects after 3 minutes will be determined on a case-by-case basis. If neither player things they were significantly ahead a rematch is the default response but if one player believes they have an extremely significant advantage (i.e. waiting for GG) they may dispute the rematch. Repeat disconnectors may be forced to forfeit the match.
There are to be no more than 2 restarts per series. If there have been restarts for any reason twice in a given BoX series then the culprit of a third disconnection will forfeit the game.
Lag Players will be given a 5 minute pause grace period to fix lag, but excessive unplayable lag may result in disqualification. Repeat offendors may be forced to forfeit the tournament.
Spectators No observers will be allowed except the casting team and event administrators/sponsors, even if both players agree there are to be no spectators. No unofficial streamers are allowed.
Replays Replays of all games must be saved and emailed to an administrator at iccup.del@gmail.com
Unsportsmanlike behaviour Unsportsmanlike conduct and abuse of any kind during, prior or after matches will not be tolerated. This may include excessive abuse in chat, racist, sexist or other inappropriate or offensive statements, or personal attacks. Incidents in private chat after the games will not be considered unless directed at tournament staff or sponsors. Punishment may also be issued for the above offences in the context of official tournament threads on public forums.
Pause Pausing is permitted but you must disclose your reason for doing so and your opponent may unpause the game at any time unless the reason for the pause is lag or event/rule related. If you pause you are obligated to do the unpause unless an admin is present and you request they unpause.
Racepicking Racepicking between individual rounds is allowed. Racepicking between individual games in a series is not allowed as the map vetoe has already taken place, and racepicking may influence your opponent's choice of maps.

randomization based on race matchups? How about some amount of seeding instead.

I will talk to DeL, but it would be extremely difficult to seed this player pool appropriately. We will be creating a 'seeding system' based on tournament results, in the future. This will make things easier on us.
If you are looking for an example, I could seed probably 16 players in the entire list as number 1. But DeL would have more of an idea than me.

On December 07 2010 05:30 qxc wrote: randomization based on race matchups? How about some amount of seeding instead. Seeding is a possibility, but full traditional seeding won't be easy with an international field and the ambiguity of SC ranking as it is. Something along the lines of players selected from a 'top 16' pool to play vs a 'bottom 16' pool could be implemented.

Yeah basically what I said above, but I know where QxC is coming from he is obviously a class player and doesn't want someone getting a free ride to the finals while he is paired off against top opponents.

We are extremely excited to bring 4 servers together for a tournament, even if its on a limited capacity (not having heaps from all servers, but more from 1 and less from others). But its the beginning of our vision, and we are proud to be able to give these players an opportunity to be seen on a more global basis.

I am actually very curious to see how our russian speaking counter-parts do in this event. As there has not been much coverage of them of late. I do remember a VOD around april of imba (imba.fxopen.adolf) beating white_ra but it was when terran was a little OP (yeh yeh i know what you're going to say).
|
|
Hi guys,
Just to let you know we will have a chinese steam up following Sen throughout the tournament, and if sen gets knocked out, they will follow the matches unstable is streaming. SC2tv.ru will be following adolf, snake and livezerg or any major showmatches.
Becoming even more exciting

I don't see why not I'll help you two organise the games. PM me or tell me on Bnet which days/times are good for you guys. We might be able to cast the replay of that game if there are no live games available on the day!

the bracket picture looks wicked cool :D

I think it might have been mentioned but there will be a Russian language stream following Adolf and a Chinese language stream following SEn. If those guys are eliminated, we will get one to follow Unstable or just other random games. There will be a rule enforced that only allows 2 streamers in any one game so in the finals it will be covered by Unstable in English (Australian?) and the Russian SC2TV.ru just to reduce impact of streamers/spectators on the players.
Likely round 1 games for coverage include Sheth vs iNcontroL or KiWiKaKi vs Filthy.

question: the games will be online right? on what server will they play? EU US AU?. I`m looking forward to this show, hope a lot of matches will be streamed.
Go Huk as always but I guess Sen or Seth will take this one
|
We will have 3 streamers covering this event, it will be an english stream chinese stream and russian stream. we will do our best to cover as much as possible! I will also be doing VOD's via replays for alot of the matches after the fact.
less than 2 hours to go! >.<
|
The games are played on the NA server. We like to pretend it's because the Americans need all the advantages they can get against us, but really it's just the most popular and handy server :3
If anyone from the tourney needs me add deL#199 to bnet.

look at kiwi vs qxc game 3, now an avg game on steppes of war, now kiwi vs qxc, now an avg game on steppes of war, sadly, the avg game on steppes of war isnt kiwi vs qxc game 3, but the avg sc2 game could be, look down, back up, your on blizzard ladder, in a map pool full of decent macro maps, whats that on the minimap? Bases! More bases than you can feast your eyes on. The bases are now 200/200 armies.
Anythings possible when the map isn't 2 screens long. I'm on a map rant.
(btw, qxc vs kiwi game 3 was an amazing macro/harass 1 hour long slugfest on shakurus, everyone should definitely check it out)

qxc vs kiwikaki game 3, was the most epic TvP i've seen. dreamhack 2010 finals included.
game 3, shakuras plateau, there have been cattlebruisers, emps, storms, dts, thors, voidrays, offensive probes, yamato sniping nexuses, mass immortals sniping planetary fortresses, drops, and ~50mins of non stop action.
watch it, you must!
|
i dont think kiwi vs QXC showed any imbalanceness issues at all
to be honest the one fight where kiwi had void rays in his army he stomped the battlecruiser army and probably coulda won if he kept pushing the attack
i think if kiwi added more void rays to his army to counter the BC's along with maybe 2 collossi (having 2 in your army is always a good help) it woulda been alot different and then of course qxc could try to counter that with other compositions
basically kiwi was fighting QXC while letting QXC utilize every single unit in the terran arsenal but kiwi decided to not add a few carriers/void rays/collossi into his lategame army
carriers definitely dont suck and collossi/carriers are vulnerable to yamato cannon but yamato can be countered by feedback soooo its like a micro war i guess
QXC vs kiwi was a rare game where you see late macro instane tug of war from terran and protoss between two good players and i dont think it showed any imbalance issues
IM JUST MAKING THIS POST to counter what i expect to be people saying "omg battlecruisers imba, how do you stop that"
|
Games are back! Game 4 of ROOTqxc vs ROOTKiWiKaKi

ye, someone GOT to start qxc fanclub now. i actually can't believe there isn't one yet.
|
definitely a great series, more interesting than a lot of korean/gsl games i've seen recently even if timing attacks are supposedly stronger right now than macro based play. anyways, i think qxc's macro and multitask was just a little better than kiwi in just about every game (his battle micro and positioning needed work in some spots but eh it happens to the best of us) and thats how he got the win, gj ggs

Is Sen playing from Korea? Would be a huge disadvantage. Seemed to me like he was a little slow on the micro.

To quote Artosis; SO MANY BANELINGS!

this is why pure macro vs zerg just does not work, lol. unless you're on jungle basin and can deny their 3rd/4th, imo terran really needs a strong 2base timing attack to win atm outside of straight up cheese
|
On December 12 2010 12:34 iNversion wrote: this is why pure macro vs zerg just does not work, lol. unless you're on jungle basin and can deny their 3rd/4th, imo terran really needs a strong 2base timing attack to win atm outside of straight up cheese
Disagree. You should watch Ngry vs Strifecro (Eg strifecro or w/e) cross position meta no cheese or anything straight up macro and he won pretty easily. So it can be done if the terran knows how and QXC has beaten plenty of zergs in macro games just because he doesn't do it 100% of the time doesn't mean terran can't compete.
On a side note there have been alot of good games so far it seems kiwi vs qxc had an epic game, and just loving all these good games ^^
|
Good games, well-run tourney.
But if Sen wins.... this is a good argument in favor of extended series (not to open up a can of worms)
|
nah, i know cheese isn't the only way to win vs zerg, but at the same time, outside of zerg making some key army control mistakes, if the terran lets zerg have 3 saturated bases without effective harass/timing attacks, it becomes exponentially more difficult to win, as shown in g1
tank/marine is still pretty effective but if z uses muta harass and engages with muta/ling/bling at favorable locations (i.e. not choke, no low ground vs high ground, etc), they have a much easier time winning than t on most maps.
edit: also, not saying tvz is imbalanced or anything, but im just calling it as i see it. past 3 bases, z is favored vs t if there is no timing attack coming
|

qxc just beat sen in a TvZ long macro game on cross positions on shakuras plateau. damn, i didnt think that was even possible.

edit: qxc needs to learn marineking's marine splits. yeah game woulda been over like in the first big attack through the middle...or the 2nd...or the 3rd...if he had split well.
but yeah qxc played amazingly overall still. the drop harass and expo denies were nicely done and the one of the best ways to play vs macro zerg

You can deny expansions much more easily than on metalopolis cross-position. Sen could have played a little better but that 3 pronged attack by qxc was really good. I'll download that replay for sure.

Its funny that way, I think its because shakuras plateau is so big that the 3rd base for zerg is relatively far away so the creep highway doesnt quite reach it at the normal 3rd base timing, unlike on Metalopolis where the 3rd is really close and easier to defend.

qxc takes game 4 on xel naga, and wins the whole thing. great series, great tournament
|
qxc sooooooo goooooood
Grats dude!
|
Grats to QXC well played by him wanted Sen but some gg's ^^
|
yes qxc <3333333 pretty happy right now
|
not sure why sen switched to roaches, perhaps because the he saw thors but imo he shouldnt have made that many, they were owned hard by mmm in the end.. although im not sure it would have mattered, qxc once again played a nice, aggressive, expo-denying style. congrats
|
Nice tourney, congrats qxc
|
ggs really wp by qxc and hopes any viewers enjoys my games ^_<
|
GG Sen, I enjoy these games in this tournament. I really hope Sen could win though. Sen alway seems to have problem with qxc drop play style.
|
|
ggs definitely, especially the final and qxc vs Kiwi. Well casted too despite the sound trouble. Thanks for organizing the tournament
|
GG qxc you showed much variety to your game, showing strong early, mid and late game strategies vs. zerg. A well deserved victory sir.
|
Great torney. Well played all players and qxc beating Sen in Macro gives me a lotta hope for this game. gg qxc!!
|
Maybe im late to the party, but can someone explain why Sen, who lost in the 4th round, was still able to finish 2nd in the tourny and ahead of KiWiKaKi, who actually beat him.
|
double elimination is tricky

On behalf of FXOpen, I'd like to congratulate QXC, not only did you go through the upper brackets unscathed, but you also truly impressed many people.
Kiwikaki and sen, I will never forget probably 2 of the games you guys played against each other, they were absolutely epic, and the game play was second to none (except QXC of course).
Congratulations to the newly formed FXOpen team (FXO), the loveable Sheth, moonglade, optikzero and Filthy, all representing FXOpen in a great manner. And all were equally excited to watch the finals matches. It was truly inspiring.
I must say, a HUGEEEEEEEEEEEEE thanks to deL, unstable and frequency. A very smooth, and extremely high calibre event run by some extremely professional guys. I know how hard it is to run an event, so congratulations.
To all the viewers, there was some interesting times in the chatroom, thank you for making the weekend eventful, thank you for supporting our event, and we look forward to bringing you another one in the beginning of January.
In the meantime, please do watch the vods, if for anything, they are truly entertaining.
We will hopefully be announcing a few interesting things in the new year.
To all gamers out there. Merry christmas, Happy holidays, keep safe, keep well, and keep gaming!
Sincerely,
All the team @ FXOpen.

Wow watched a few of those VODS, AMAZING production and, seems like this is a solid tournament. Would definitely love to see this one again.
I think you've heard of him, his name is QXC, I wasn't too impressed with QXC in previous games I've seen[BETA], but it seems like he's really stepped his game up. Oh and Sen is Sen so, can never count him out heh.
GJ!

any replay pack coming out ?
|
there are some vods on youtube. Ummmm, www.youtube.com/unstabletv i think it is. Rest will be put up soon. We will release replays with our website sometime in the new year.
|
I hope this tournament grows, I watched just a few of the games live due to bad timing for me but they were AWESOME!
I will definately check out the vods.
Seemed very well organised even though the brackets confused the hell out of me at first glance. The stream was also lagfree and great quality, good good stuff.

It s not as close as Metalopolis for sure but I think with good creep spread you should be able to close the gap at a pretty decent timing.
I also think that this wasn't the problem at all it was more of a lack of switching tech by zerg.
|
Its my belief that players adapt to the situation they are in. And if the adaptation fails then they fall behind.
I am pretty sure every player has practiced every map at least enough to know the creep spread parameters. Its just how well your opponent knows that necessity, and the pressure they put on you to prevent it from happening. Thats what starcraft is all about

Hopefully we can run an event in the European timezone, though it would be an awkward time for us mostly being based in Australia. Not sure how far we are getting into the European scene right now though maybe someone else can comment on it - I just run the tourneys
|
European timezones dont go well with the north american server. We will always invite european players to our invitationals, as they are great players. But whether or not they play (sometimes 5am) is another thing.
We may host a european server tournament sometime in the future via our russian team.

please release the replays ASAP. If you wait until new year, it will be obsolete because the new patch will probably come out.
btw, i'm shocked no one mention azz 2-0'd huk.
|
Huk was apparently having lag issues. But it still would have been a feat.
Replays will be up ASAP.

Replays will be up ASAP. Azz should have the same delay as HuK, Australia is about the same distance from the US and we have worse internet too

Can you please upload ALL replay files ? a lot of games are missing from the rar, such as Kiwikaki vs Sen in the LB
|
there's no finals and LB finals replay in the replay pack! please upload those epic games, I'm (and sure many people are) looking forward
you guys did a great job, I followed the whole tournament too.
sadly couldn't cast some games live.
|
Sorry must have linked an old replay pack from day 1!
