Streams There are no stream links at this time. This event is an Offline Qualifier with a ton of players and games and therefore it is unlikely that GOM will be streaming it in any capacity.
Hmm, did some of the oGs members get knocked out? I don't seem to see oGsTheStC or oGsZenio from Day 1, and Nazgul didn't mention them playing today either.
Lol Zergbong, great name, shame it wouldn't fly in today's bnet.
Hoping July makes it through, I haven't seen a lot from him yet and I get the feeling his laddering has been more about practice than performance, we could really see him shine in this tournament.
so it's confirmed that a1 #7 is July? he has the same name as 4 other previous sc players according to tlpd (ZergMaN OR July OR sungjune OR Sonkwon) (박성준)

Ummm maybe I just misinformed. He should be in China right now for some event matches with his STX teammates.
On August 29 2010 11:47 OPme wrote: Is there any stream of that event at the moment?
Or are they waiting to the final bracket to start streamming
These are the offline qualifiers, and like the OSL and MSL, they are usually not broadcasted. However, when they get to the round of 64 (after all of these prelims) then you will have games streamed.
That's july's name, unless a person with the exact same name entered this GSL(highly unlikely), It's most likely Julyzerg, yes.
as you can see in my previous post 박성준 tlpd-izes to a few different players, so it's not too unlikely that it's a different person with the same name in the GSL. I think it would be a big deal if july was in the gsl and we would have heard about it already.

He is with oGs I believe. Or at least practicing with them.
I read it. Just wondering i mean wouldnt the world love to know how good you have to be to enter the GSL ? :p I mean it would be a huge commercial as well to stream at least the last few matches of the guys that will make it into the GSL. I just thought GSL would be such a huge thing that every tiny bit would be streamed to death. So i m a little disappointed. No pun or offense intended.

You do realize there are around 2000 people playing in the offline qualifiers, right? It IS huge. It's too huge to cast the early stages of it. Once we go to the Round of 64, I'm sure everything will be streamed and casted.

Its an open qualifier.
so you dont have to be good at all to enter the gsl, just show up and be availible to play in korea for extended periods of time. They will stream/tv broadcast the shit out of the ro64 -> finals, but imagine if they streamed EVERY SINGLE game from the first round of MLG raliegh, and then multiply that by 8.

As I recall there will be another couple GSL events this year and the lot of them will serve as qualifiers for an even more expansive league next year.

Actually the one who beat Dayfly was jjonga, former Hite progamer. No wonder he got 2-0ed.
Yep, yep. There are going to be two more tournaments like this, which will be used to determine the "S" players from the "A" players--the really good from the pretty good. So, GARIMTO, Sir@soni, Jinro, Hannibal, and Dayfly will get an extra chance to get into the A or S codes.
It's a big tournament, so some people have easier paths than others to the Ro64. It's probably random, so it's theoretically possible that like Maka would have to face Cool in order to advance, while some people would get 3 byes and have to face two low-Diamond players to advance.

I don't know much about US military regulations regarding off base activity, but I doubt the military would prohibit him from participating.
It's allowed, but if ANY events conflict with his military duties, the duties take precedence and he would have to forfeit the matches and due to the way military duties are assigned, it's honestly really risky to even try. Imagine getting up to #2 and then having watch duty, lawl.

We'd be into next year by the time anyone finishes watching all of that. Seems a trend on TL to not understand the logistical nightmare of something like this. Plus it's a qualifier, there are bound to be plenty of, relatively, terrible players and they'd just bitch about the quality of the games.
Zergbong made it! That's crazy. I remember watching replays of his years ago in BW and he had some of the most amazing strats and best comebacks I've ever seen, even better than some of Effort's comebacks.

hope he does well in sc2. Always liked him during his KTF days for some reason.
i liked zergbong too, he really got boned when they dropped 2v2 though. plus, spore crawlers now kind of look like zerg bongs, so he's playing the right game
you know, Blizzard should seriously have a talk with TV stations around the world to broadcast the GSL. I'm sure its not too hard to catch on, especially with Blizzard's negotiating power (and by that, I mean $$$).

It would certainly be more entertaining than the endless repetitions of cheap and dumb series we are getting here on some private channels in Germany.
Whoops, sorry about that. Forgot to delete the rest of the junk from the google translate link. Also, it seems that Grrrrr is down a game in the 2nd round against 정제민 .
I lost first and third match. I was asked to come back in November, I guess they will do this again. Also I can take 30 days of leave to play... if I were to place, only way I would be called back to duty is if something serious went down and there wouldn't be any Starcraft, if you know what I'm saying.
I'm not sure exactly how they determined who advanced though. What if someone that is a medium player, played a really sucky person (me lol)? Or two extremely talented players got stuck playing each other? I thought I read somewhere about points?
What was with Rekrul's brag/Artosis bashing blog about Grrr... barely ever playing SC2 and owning Artosis at a party? Then he loses early in qualifiers, maybe Jam's really really good?
And Grrr... has a lucrative career playing poker, but goes to play an SC2 tourney (is he pulling an intotherainbow?)
I'm so confused by the potential contradictions. And I'd be happier than a teenage girl losing her virginity to Justin Bieber if he livestreamed.
Cool (김원기) is #33 in B-2, currently playing the last match before qualifying. His opponent's real name is the same as Reality, could be the same guy, idk.
More detailed information from PlayXP. ---> JunwiPrime qualified! Yotsuba (#1 Korean ladder; edit: = Maka) and NEXGenius (the top Korean ladder protoss) are both in Cool's group.
edit: check the PlayXP link above - it now lists Cool as the first one qualified from group B-2. Cool!
Just realized that "JunwiPrime" is a member of oGs. Really, Blizzard needs to implement a clan system . . . .
Otherwise, though I guess it was never in doubt, it's nice to see Maka qualifying. I'm definitely rooting for Maka this tournament. Hopefully Cool and Maka are placed far away in the tournament, so we can get another Cool vs. "exterminator" Maka rematch.
I couldn't stop laughing at the part where he did not know that stalkers can blink until yesterday
apparently, he barely played 200 matches and managed to beat Dayfly..
From the interview, Jjonga says he played a couple rounds 2 weeks ago but stopped playing as he kept losing. And then just yesterday his friends called him up and asked him if he could come for the qualifiers. He played just one more round to refresh himself but after losing that one match, he thought he wasn't gonna do well. At the last minute he watches some Gom sc2 vods.
whoa, wait, if artosis is commentating with tasteless, and if he makes it deep into the rounds, who's going to replace artosis to commentate with tasteless? @_@

Sounds cool. You were in Korea and just decided to go? even though I'm impressively bad at starcraft I would totally do something like that.
Was it fun? What was it like in there during the qualifiers? Did you meet the TeamLiquid guys there?
Yeah, one day at work (don't tell anyone), I was googling starcraft tournaments and this one popped up!
Well, lets just say I arrived 10 minutes late because I'm an idiot and was wandering all around the area I thought the building was and no one knew where any of this was going on. I was actually about to give up and just go home, luckily I found the right building as I was leaving the area. They were very helpful and got me set up quickly. I beat all of my friends easily and no one I have played online could have prepared me for this... haha. The guy I played against was very quick with his micro, I was so jealous. =( My macro is what kept me in the game, my graph was above his most all the matches, but too bad my APM blows.
There were quite a few people there, maybe 60 when I left. To my surprise it was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I didn't meet any TeamLiquid guys, I don't think. I don't remember anyone actually. It was so fast because I was late. Then I left cause I had to use restroom so bad. haha!

Dang I saw the name Jin Young Soo in the qualified and was really hoping it was Hwasin, but most likely not '
In other news, what the f*ck happened to Freedom? He was doing really well in beta and we haven't heard anything about him since like phase 2? He didn't even try to qualify for GSL
EDIT: On that note, wheres TheStC? He was making A LOT of noise right before the qualifiers.
Nah I knew Grrr was from the oGs leader interview, think I just imagined Legionnaire coming back, maybe some day! Shame about Grrr though, wouldve been awesome to see him play.
I would love to see a Quali's ReplayPack from Team Liquid!! I think everybody here would like a peek into some of the weekend's games. Any chance guys? Whaddaya say?
Here's a blue eyed warrior who came to Korea all by himself to fight in GSL
Trevor Housten had his late interview on 29th after making it to top 64 in TG Sambo-Intel preliminaries at Intel e-stadium located on 7th floor of TechnoMart Sindorim
Trevor Housten has come to Korea all by himself and has made it to top 64 on 28th. He is a Terran user and his nick name is 'TorcH' . The following is the interview with Trevor Housten
- How do you feel now that you have made it to Ro 64? > It hasn't sunk in yet, but I feel great. On the other hand, I'm concerned about many events that will follow.
- What made you decide to enter GSL? > I've always had big interest in Korean Starcraf league, which is the best in the world. Also, the fact GomTV is hosting the match made me want to enter the tournament. At first, I wasn't quite sure how I was going to go all the way to Korea, but GomTV has helped me a lot through Twitter and mail, making it possible.
- Were you confident about the preliminaries? > I was confident but also very nervous. My hands were shaking during the match(laugh)
- How do you feel about competing against top Korean players? > I have played against professionals before, so they don't make me any more nervous than normal players.
- Were you familiar with other foreign players in the tournament? > Not the guys in this competition, but I got to know them yesterday, and they have been very supportive. They are all very nice guys.
What's your goal in GSL? > My primary goal was Ro16, but I wish to make it further up, even the first place.
- As a foreigner, what do you think about GSL? > I think it's just amazing. The prize poll is great and it's a huge competiton sponsored by major companies. However, many foreigners found it so sudden and I think it's shame that many of them weren't able to come
- Do you plan to enter in future GSL competitons? > Definately, as long as I don't have problem with time and money.
- Do you have any comment for Korean starcraft fans watching GSL? > This is my first visit to Korea. The GSL staff from GomTV and Blizzard have been very supportive. I feel greatful for their hospitality and I wish to be able to contribute to Korea.
Nice interview, I'm amazed by the help he was offered by Blizzard and GomTV. Seems they are really supportive, which opens up country borders a bit for other top western players. StarCraft 2 seems to be able to bring the competition to Korea, instead of normal Broodwar, where alot of foreigners treid, but never quite made it. They got far, did good, ofc, but never won the big leagues. I hope this changes with Starcraft 2 .
The oldest participant in the competition was born in 1966 The youngest participant in 1996. The oldest player who hasn't dropped out yet was born in 1972.

Wasn't Maru (who qualified to Ro64) from 1997 according to some post earlier in this thread?

Well, Nazgul wasn't quite in shape lately. Maybe he just didn't play that much anymore. Might change now as they are in korea, although he's more of a manager than a player? That's what I thought.
I feel bad for both Jinro and Nazgul, but even more for Jinro as i had more hopes for him qualifying and he's quite an active player from what i've seen in tournaments etc.
Yeah I reread it to see if I missed it, and I was to slow to get back to the last page to edit it so i didn't end up looking like a tool. Damn you and your fast reactions!
Next month should definitely see at least the likes of HuK, MorroW, MaDFroG and maybe some other mouz or mTw players participating. Would be such a shame otherwise.

Could be 13 if you were born Sept-Dec 1996. Or it could be a Korean age thing.
Looking at some of the games played, you can see many players with ~800 games, and even over 1000 for Choejeongmin / oGsZenio. For a release about 33 days ago, that's over 30 games a day. Including match-making time, replay review, etc, it's likely some of these players are averaging 10 hours of laddering a day.
Agreed. Many of the top Euro/US players would have a good chance to qualify. But the real problem is more about the sponsoring, housing, work/education.

Well even with the weird Korean age thing, GOMTV wrote that the youngest player was born in 1996, while according the post I quoted Maru was born in july 1997...
Shitty timing for TheStC if he couldn't compete in this. He's basically spent the last few weeks dominating the Korean scene and would have been one of the big favourites to win this whole tournament.

I'm global manager at GomTV, and my job is keeping you guys in teamliquid satisfied.
I know that many of you are anxious to see replays, however there were about 1000 contestants for preliminaries and as we were trying to get it over in two days, we didn't have the luxury to provide them.
But stay tuned! The opening match will be held on 4th of September which is next saturday at 7pm KST. 16 players out of those who made it RO64 will be playing that day, which we plan to broadcast. Those who do not compete in the opening match will have their match at our studio, and their games will also be broadcasted.
We are very pleased with your great enthusiasm and interest, and will continue to keep you all informed about GSL. If you have any questions about GSL, feel free to contact me.

The games on the fourth of September are going to be amazing.
It's sad that Grrr, Nazgul, oGsGon, oGsSir@soni, and Jinro didn't qualify. I'm also a big fan of oGsTheStC, so it's sad that he couldn't participate. But! There are a ton of great people to root for in the tournament.
Now if somebody could just teach me how to use the GOM player app. Where's the button for English? But seriously... a little help or demo would be good. I can't even figure out how to change channels, select live programs.

Just nobody turn this thread into balance discussion please please please.
Unless we have numbers about races of the whole participants no one could make any conclusion.
But since the perfect 33%/33%/33% would be 21.3 of each race in the bo64, one can say 16 27 21 is close enough to not make any balance conclusion anyway, especially when you ponder the fact that there was probably far less Zerg than Terran and Protoss.
If p = #Zerg / #Population : Let say the population is 33% 33% 33% (it is not but this will even strengthen my point since I will show it is not significant numbers to claim a difference between Bo64 races and population races). Null Hypothesis : p(Bo64) = p(population) = 0.33 v.s. p(Bo64) < 0.33 The sample we have shows p^(Bo64)=16/64=0.25
The standrard deviation of such average of a binomial is Sqrt( p * (1-p) / N) with p = 0.33 and N = 64 it results in 0.058. So Z = (0.33-0.25) / 0.058 = 1.37 where Z is N(0,1) (approximatly) so there is 9% chance to get such a sample. This is big enough statisticaly speaking to not reject the Null hypothesis. This number will be even greater with the real population proportion of zerg contestants since it is lower than 33%.

You guys are awesome. Keep it up! Thanks for believing in the SC2 community and throwing so much support behind it.
i am loving the direct feedback here on TL.net from GOM. Cant wait for it
That's me. I'm just a newb living here in S. Korea and thought I'd give things a shot. Eliminated 2nd round but had a great time hanging out with everyone.

Hehe, neat. Now all we have to do is hunt down this Hubert Krenz feller.

He did not participate as he's soon to be enrolled in military services.
I'm sorry that I haven't been very active, but we are really busy down here at GomTV. We have just finnished making brackets for RO64. I know many of you are very curious about it, but all I can say is that it will be confidential for now.
As for the opening match, I mentioned before that there will be 16 players playing. It seems I was misinformed. There will be 4 selected players from RO64, which means there will be 2 matches(3 games per match, the best two wins).
Well I guess another big questions everyone has is "How the hell do we watch the games?!" We will upload them on http://www.gomtv.net. It is NOT in Korean and you do NOT need to pay.
"What about commentaries?! Do we have to watch it listening to Korean jibberish?" Not to worry. Dan(Artosis) and Nick(Tasteless) are going to provide English commentaries.
If by any chance some of you already live in Korea or are planning to come to Korea this week. The opening match will be held at KBS 88 Stadium at 7pm KST on 4th of September. It's free and all the players that participated in the preliminaries will be given VIP seats and presents.

Well even with the weird Korean age thing, GOMTV wrote that the youngest player was born in 1996, while according the post I quoted Maru was born in july 1997...

That website doesn't look like it's been updated in a long-time. It could really use a makeover for the launch of the GSL games.
Also, will Tasteless and Artosis be casting the games live, or from replays? There have been some speculation pointing towards the latter.

Very nice, but can you also optimize your streaming service for viewers outside Asia, usually the GOMTV streams/VODs are very choppy, pretty much unwatchable for the majority of people even at the low quality settings. And I know that the issue is not only with the fact that you are based in Korea since a lot of people can watch OGN streams without any lag.

Yes the website does look out of date lol. The web design team is working very hard on it. Also you must understand that it is quite unclear what we should post as the schedule is still being planned. We expect we will be updating the site within this week.
As for the commentaries Nick and Dan are going to cast on the spot while observing the games through English client.

Yes we all feel it's a shame that we cannot provide high quality streams to those overseas as we do in our Korean website. We are planning to provide premium service in which you can pay for high resolution streams. I will report your opinion and try to make improvements.
I'll be attending the Sept 4th openers which Tasteless / Artosis will be casting I believe. Do you guys want me to bring my HD cam and get footage similar to what Artosis did (with a steadier hand of course) for the qualifiers?
