Extra Information
Depending on how well the SC2 portion of WCG Canada goes, I can guarentee that as long as WCG includes SC2 as one of the games in 2011 that Canada will be sending in 1 or 2 players to go participate in the finals at China.

Amazing to see WCG back for Canada. Hopefully there is enough people who can go to Montreal for that event so they host provincial qualifiers in the future.
|
ahhh, lanETS, zzz, why not in Toronto, such lazy organizers
|
someone plz ask WCG to delay this a few days? I'm out of the country until the 5th, FML.

god, I wish Testie played SC2.
|
wait...what?
45$ entry fee, 400 max participants... but roughly 1000$ in prizes? where is the rest of the money going if no one is sent out? -____-
45x400 = 18 000$ and yet 1000$ in prizes? seriously?
organizing an event like this doesn't cost 17 000$

apparently Grrr is back! :D

organizing an event like this doesn't cost 17 000$ $45 is entry fee into the entire place, which means you can participate in all tournaments if you wish. The money goes towards other games as well, they just put off $1000 for a test SC2 run.

I will be there for TF2. Looking forward to seeing some SC2 games for sure.

you might want to add that this is a BYOC event? because that will limit some peoples traveling/hopes of competing :p

well, every other LanETS ive heard about has been, and BYOC + 45$ for a 400$ 1st place is hardly worth traveling any sort of distance, although i heard you can sleep on the floors there so you save cash on hotels/motels.

Nice! That might change my mind about going then! :D

in the OP it mentions dorm rooms so would there be like accomodations for those who have paid the entrance fee? Like a decent place to sleep and chill or what?
Thanks for the info~

I was thinking about taking a trip to montreal during my break...
Althought I doubt my girlfriend would be impressed if I said "HEY LET'S GO TO MONTREAL" and I spent 3 days playing starcraft there.

Nice ! nice 12 hour drive . but no biggie

From the looks of their website there is 20 slots for the tournament. 5-8 = $50.00 so you could get your money back at decent odds.
|
it cost 40$ because it is BYOC and it cost a lot money to run a 400 players tournament with all the equipment needed.
I went to 2 ETS lan before and it is always a lot of fun and very well organised.
The prizes will be bigger for their next lan in march because they have always had awsome sponsors.
|
really good news i guess altho i would rather see it have bigger "test prizepool" or however u want to put it lol
hopefully i will be able to attend but we will see

Yea, there's no reason for all those $50 prizes... for a 45 entry fee prize pool should be like 700/200/100 or something , 400 for 1st is super small for the fee.

Every SC2 players that lives at proximiy of montreal should come has it promote SC2 lans. More players = bigger prizes next time!
I've already won 2,000$ two years in a row for Call of Duty, which is much smaller than SC! Come on people, let's show ETS how big our community is!

Personally I think Ontario / Quebec (although french) is best as they are pretty much the most central provinces although it's kind of a long drive for east and west instead an hour drive for west, and a 24 hour drive from east, comprehend?

My apologies if this information was already available and I was just too inept to find it (though I did look)...
What is the rule on using customkeys.txt for a modified grid layout and warp-in hotkey?

I think something like this is better hosted in somewhere Central, (Winnipeg, Regina, Edmonton) so it's easier for East Coast players and West Coast players to play together.
|
sounds like fun, I might try to make it!

Wish it was in Toronto :c would totally go

I'm assuming its in Montreal because most of the people are in the East coast. Not sure why it isn't in Toronto and I live in Calgary so I kind of wish it was in Vancouver lol

Except nobody lives there, so pretty much everybody would have to make a 10 hour + drive, whether from Vancouver, Toronto, or Montreal... even Regina -> Calgary is 8 hr
Edit: damn the layout of Canada's major cities.

Well technically I'm just getting the word out for now. Once SC2 is included in WCG 2011 I'll most likely sponsor the WCG Canada SC2 event

When you sponsor it, have it in Toronto

Glad to see Canadian tournaments though regardless.

Hell ya, might be able to make this. I'll get completely destroyed- but repping WCG Canada is more important.

Again, 45$ is NOT the entry fee for SC2 tourney,
LanETS is a lan party BYOC that last 3 days straight open 24 hours each day of course where you have a space for sleeping (bring a pillow !) and thats whats the FEE is for.
You pay, they give you a spot where you can put your computer at, connect you to the internet and provide you with food (pizza) and a huge lan gaming experience for 72 hours straight !
The tournamenet prize pool for SC2 is just a bonus.

Heh, hopefully it is in Alberta if you sponsor it, then I might make the drive/flight from SK. Anything outside of AB/SK would not be worth the effort for me. The experience might be though. As long as WCG takes off for the SC scene I will be happy regardless.

Hey guys, glad there are lot of people interested. I'll be one of the admin of the SC2 tourney. FYI, it wasn't supposed to be on the roster but after some talks with the organizers, we managed to take LoL out and bring SC2 instead. The reason the 1st prize is 400 $ only is a bit lame tough. I asked the game if we could do another prize pool structure but it isn't possible because for the CS tourney each member of the winning team takes 400 $ too. So it isnt possible to give more than 400 $ to a single person only.
The Fee is only to cover the costs of the LAN. Btw, it's not a WCG official tournament. It's a unofficial friendly tourney.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask them here or PM me.

You can't give me than 400$ to the winner because cs1.6 players would not get as much money? I know it is probably not your call but it sounds pretty dumb.
cs1.6 players get a free trip to LA. Just the plane ticket for LA worth more than 400$. How does that make sense.

You're relying that WCG will be picking up sc2, but you have no proof of it? Why would they suddenly stop supporting wc3, the most internationally competitive RTS? Not to mention they will most likely need a business arrangement with blizzard before they can even add SC2, it seems like you are putting the wagon in front of the horse here. Its truly upsetting the support WCG canada gives RTS games, and now with an over priced lan tournament, no wonder Canada is suffering so much. Please take into context that LanETS often drew 1.6 players from New York, and other states. The prize pool alone doesnt cover the travel costs, 1.6 players often travel together as well, so when they take home 2000$ a team, it does not hurt them as bad as 400$ / person, especially since a lot of 1.6 teams get their lan expenses paid for.
Anyways, ya you really did a shoddy job throwing this together, i guess im happy that it exists, but at the same time it sucks for any sort of grass roots creation, only players with a guaranteed shot at taking home the 400$ to get there. As for the experience, i can think of plenty things that 50$ + travel fees could get me that would make me plenty more happy than spending 72 hours with people that have bad hygiene in a room not big enough for 5 tournaments.
RTS should be at least 1/3rd of the 1.6 pool, the fact that Canada lans still dont understand this proves that we are still a long way away from being a competing nation.

Exactly. I tried everything in my power to change the prize pool but they won't budge.
@ Holcan : I am just the admin for the SC2 tourney. I had no word for the prize pool and whatsoever (That was a decision by WCG Canada) Because if i could, i would have done things differently for sure. And for now, i don't have clue if WCG will support SC2 in 2011. It's just pure speculation. I'll edit my post cause i think it's a bit misleading.
|
Yes, im not blaming you or kOre, as i mentioned i am happy that there is a Canadian tournament already, its just a shame. As for SC2 and WCG, its likely, but im not sure of the International lan business sense that blizzard will be taking, and as far as i know you need to contact them about everything sc2 related, and sc/wc3 didnt have those binding laws, so it may be easier to just carry with sc and wc3.
I didnt mean to rant on like that, i may even still go if i carpool with a couple teammates, its just in contrast RTS is just as demanding mentally, but you get less reward for the effort.
|
I totally agree with you. But the organizers dont really care about that it seems.

Is anyone willing to share a computer for the event? I'll pay you but you can't run away if you lose on the first or second day, or else I'd be computerless! But admins, is this allowed?

Is KiWiKaKi the old XdsKiwi? : ) Just a guess, since SLush and XdsCrazy are there.
Would be fun if Grrrr was in the tournament, I was a big fan before. There is a video on youtube, Grrrr vs Truth, is that him?
I recognize a lot of names I saw on popular youtube videos here. Huk, Kiwikaki, Antimage. I'm still not a strong player enough, but I will sure play the best I can since those guys will be in the place!
See you in the tournament :D
|
I'm definitely going
Huk + KiWiKaKi, 3rd place here I go!

I don't want to sign up (would only be available 1 day out of the weekend, but is it possible to come watch/obs? is there a ticket fee for viewers? if so, how much?

Since PC game tournaments require the use of a PC, visitors will not be able to participate. On the other hand, access to console tournaments is permitted.
From the site. However, they don't state if it will cost anything to be a spectator. Also, anyone from McGill going? I will probably be there, considering it's walking distance from the campus (unless I am looking at the wrong map).
|
Has no one ever been to a LAN party before? I can't believe all the people getting pissy about having to pay $45 for a THREE day event, room and board included.
Crying about $400 for first place not being enough money for you? Really? First off, its not even an official tournament and secondly do you really expect to win more at a Canadian LAN? I would be very surprised to learn of a Canadian event that paid more than $400 to a single person for RTS.
Please stop flaming peoples posts who are only trying to advertise their event.
Good luck with this, and I hope you get a good turnout to make SC2 bigger in Canada!

What need is there for this to be a LAN with no LAN in SC2...

correct, i played XDskiwi and asked, he said no. he does play though still, hes at the top of diamond somewhere under that name.
Kiwikaki is an orc(?) player from WC3.. one of the best north american players near the end, playing on some top teams. Strong player.

Try living in the West.
But in all seriousness. Its because nobody lives in the martimes, the pop is two small. They will host events were the absolute most people can come. I.e. Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal.

Yes but the SC2 tournament isnt part from the WCG actually. So it isn't organized by the same people except for some stupid rules like the prize pool.
For the spectators, i don't know where you found that on the website...but it was confirmed to me by the tournament coordinator that it's possible and free.
|
If this is the same people who ran even in montreal before then it should be a lot of fun. I went to an event in montreal like 5 - 6 years ago and shared a computer with a friend that lived there. I came second in wc3 and they were so nice to give me a earlier prize ceremony because i had to catch a train back to toronto early. They allow spectators for sure, they only confirm that you paid if your playing in a tournament and as well as when getting a place for the computer. Its basically 45$ per computer.
I hope to see lots of you there, i'd love to see sc2 grow big in canada!!
BTW there's also a LAN in Toronto this Saturday. Its at a LAN cafe near Yonge and Finch. Already 10+ people confirmed going. Its mainly to meet and play for fun. A small tournament is most likely happening.

arguable, since the best RTS teams ever to come out of Canada have all been mainly based in Quebec.. im talking XD's, Play, eGe. .. And dont forget the only non-korean to ever place in the top 3 of an OSL/MSL is from Quebec.
(and this, speaking as a french/quebec hater, even though I was in Play and eGe)

But please leave the spot beside Kiwi blank, it is reserved for FredZ, if you take it we go somewhere else.

Do we have to pay for the dorms? How are they? Does anyone know?
|
Seriously trying to get a ride to the ETS. Anyone in Sherbrooke, QC ? :D
Also, for the dorms it's pretty much sleeping in a giant, all-purpose school gymnasium. Bring your camping bags and a small mattress. At least you get showers. You don't want 600+ unshowered nerds.

Usually 2 beds and a window, very small. Bathrooms / Showers are in the hall :/ Don't expect a 4 star room :p\
The dorms should be free like stated in the OP although ya never know. 45$ for 3 nights in a dorm.. Not bad

Finally WCG Canada is bringing SC back into the scene though in the form of SC2. ^_^

registered and paid . Looks like I'll have to put HoN aside and learn this starcraft 2 game people talking about.
Anybody attending want to add me up on Bnet PM me.
|
To answer some of the questions :
you don't have to pay for the dorms but like Zhek said, it's a gymnasium so bring your stuff aka camping matress and bag.
The event is in Montreal because WCG is doing their event there. I have no clue why they chose montreal but it isnt because of SC2 since SC2 is not part of the WCG tourneys. It's only on the roster for the LAN ETS.
If you want to carpool or you need a lift, go check on the event forums http://forums.lanets.ca/viewforum.php?f=75
Most SC2 players are either in ROW E with SLush (but dont take KiWiKaKi's side spot) or just behind ROW C D on the left side of the room.
Security is top notch and therefore friendly bodyguards aren't necessary
Great to have a lot of people from TL coming down. Should be a lot of fun
|
Wish there would be online qualifications or something. Sadly don't have the cash to make the trip this time. Perhaps in the future.
|
On the RANDOM chance that someone is driving through or from Sudbury Ontario to get to this event, I would gladly car pool and help pay for gas.
|

Do we have to pay for the dorms? How are they? Does anyone know? Usually they have the school gym open to set up a sleeping bag/mattress so you can get some decent sleep.
It's a pretty good event overall, with tons of free stuff =)

I'll be there!
Should be a good time ;D

Question: What is the format for the sc2 tournament and when do we expect it to begin. Since I'm driving from Toronto and i work during the week I'm expecting to arrive in Montreal late Friday night. I'm going to do my best to get Friday afternoon off though

so pay in advance and come early on saturday for late registration. btw, are u really from fnatic?

Only if i could have the money to fly their! Should have one in western Canada!

Is this a BYOC ? (bring you'r own computer)

I feel like if I won first place it might be barely able to cover the cost of travel, food, hotel and entrance fee. Even if I was free, I don't think this is worth it for anyone living more than a couple hours away..

I'll most probably be going one way or another, but if anyone else from Qc city is going having a ride would be even better

I am going to try so hard to attend to this!!!

?! not sure whats your point here.
By the way for those who are attending, pay asap. I am trying to get some leverage based on our attendance level but its kinda hard since CS seems to be THE GAME and seems rather complicated to get more prize pool for a 1v1 tourney. But this event will be the best time to put SC2 on the map and make a name for ourselves ...and to dictate the future events for 2011 and of course, get bigger prize pools.
For the format, it will be round-robin on saturday and double elimination for the playoff round on sunday. Still figuring out exactly what it will be (time and number of games) kinda complicated since we need to finish early on sunday
bo3 round robin would be too long i guess. sunday it will probably be bo3 until finals but it might be confirmed at last minute because it will depend on how many players will attend.
|
For time reasons, we'll have to limit the number of participants to 128. Right now 72 out of 147 have paid out. So that leaves 56 opens spots. In other terms, if you plan to come and havent paid, do it NOW!
See ya there
|
I wish stupid Saskatchewan wasn't so far away I'd totally come spectate/commentate for this! Go Canada!
|
This is pretty cool. It's so nice to see competition at least to try to take off. No SC2 WCG this year means I have 1 year to get good. Awesome.
I hope they understand that this kind of event is less than 1/10th the interest level over all of Canada.
|
Indeed, Canada is a good place for gaming but the e-sports scene really sucks. Wish the MLG would come here to organize events similar to the one in Raleigh. Their game lineup is better than WCG imo. But hopefully this will be a wake up call for WCG and they'll add SC2 next year. Fingers crossed.

Hey,
Driving from Ottawa either Friday night or Saturday morning. Possibly have room to take 1 (more) person. If you have a desktop it may need to sit on your lap for the drive. Will be cramped but cheaper than the bus ^.^
PM me.
Cheers
|
By the way, if we reach 128 players, prize pool will be raised to 1900 $ Total
in that case, do you prefer a top 8 prize pool or top 12 ? (double elimination tournament)
|
i doubt im going to be going but i anxiously await the results, good stories, pics, vods, etc.!
gl hf guys <3
|
i prefer top 8 obv for prizes obv
|
I still think i might have a chance at top 8 but my vote is top 12
If i win something then the trip becomes more worth it
Its going to be crazy fun anyways if we get 128 sc2 players!!!
p.s. Whatever we're at now add +1 because my friend is coming and will pay asap.

I don't think this has been answered : it's gonna be 16 groups of 8 players, top 2 from each group goes the final round which is double elimination

On August 06 2010 04:50 AnodyneSea wrote: lies? really? I talked to kiwi and he said Grrrr had played sc2 a bit... is he still in korea?
I played a few dozen games with Grrr since the beta, in short :
he was back in Quebec since 2008, ran business, he told me he was in Korea for gaming a couple weeks ago - he was very solid as both Protoss and Terran and always played under smurf accounts to avoid being harassed by people
he didn't tell me what names he used, but if we still have no idea who Torch is (I haven't followed news since the end of the qualifications), I would bet that's him

Lefnaij will be there too.
And some quebecers that are doing good on the ladder such as AlexCmoi and Taurent. Should be alot of fun

watched LB finals and grand finals... JF played well! Kiwi had some nice ideas but they didn't pan out.
Sad slush tried a predictable 6 pool or w/e on steppes
Gg's! nice event

Grats JF and KiWi.
I had a blast and i am looking forward to our next big event.
Thanks to all the people that came and made this possible. SC2 is really the next big thing here and i'm glad we could prove it to WCG Canada.

6 pool replays aren't allowed.
