Getting lots of mutalisks can be powerful against terran.

One of the problems of getting lots of mutalisks is having them die to widow mines.

Here is some info that may be helpful in fighting widow mines with mutalisks.

Basic
0. Always bring an overseer or two.
1. 10 mutas one-shot mines*
2. 30 mutas one-shot pairs of mines(with each glaive doing 3 damage)*
3. Glaives always bounce to the nearest target, so if the nearest things to two mines is each other, stack up your 30 mutas a bit and just attack them.

Intense
4. Spam-clicking in front of the muta flock's shadow will stack them up best, then if you follow that up with a patrol or attack command immediately, they will fly there and shoot while stacked up.
5. A mutalisk can shoot a widow mine and fly out of range of that widow mine if you time it right.
6. You want to try to patrol directly towards the mine and move directly away after releasing the glaive.
7. Watch the shadow of the muta flock to judge ranges from the mines.
8. You want to patrol into the mines from a bit further away so that the mutas will be at max speed as they enter and exit the mine hotzone.

Unlikely to be used but good to know.
9. If Terran researches +1 vehicle armor(how is a mine a vehicle anyway), +1 flyer attack will make the second hit of the glaive wurm still do 3 damage, allowing 30 mutas to continue to one-shot 2 mines at once.
10. Once Terran researches +2 vehicle armor, second glaive hits do 2 damage even at +3 flyer attack. +3 vehicle armor makes second glaive hits do 1 damage.

Bonus: 19 mutas one-shot medivacs.*

*On even upgrades.

Curious: what is the advantage of patrolling instead of an a-move?

Not sure if there are any speed/acceleration benefits in any scenario, although sometimes it feels as though there is.

Anyway, I find the line helpful in judging your stacking of mutas and the angle of approach.

Attack / run back is better than attack / run into the next mine when you think about it.

The next layer of mines has a possibility not to be one-shot because some mutas may stay behind, thus allowing it to trigger.
There's a fine line between bravery and stupidity.

So does patrol make the units pull back after they have killed the first mine?

No. You need to manually pull the mutas back as you notice them decelerating to take the shot.

been doing this a lot. Always thought as to why people are so afraid of 3-4 mines with a big flock of mutas.
Training this for a few mins allows you to just not fear small packs of mines.

Nice post!

They stay stacked longer when on patrol which is crucial for killing pairs of mines from what I understand.

Nice. Isn't the lighting different on different maps so the shadow won't always be directly beneath the overlord? Maybe i'm imagining things.. but if so, I think you should amend this and just replace shadows with the flyer helper thing in options and tell people to turn that on and look at that instead of the shadow. But good stuff.
P.S. I'm nub. If you'd like you can follow me @xthurst but its not worth it ill be honest

ive been aware of this for awhile now but the problem is by the time i have that many muta i really dont have time to micro like that for a few mines. the risk is to high. a mine is only 75/25 so i might kill 5 but 3 mines off and i loss most of my muta. its not worth it most of the time.

on top of this marines and turrets are always mixed in to the equation and i honestly never have the luxury of time to kill mines like this.

my solution has always been to ignore mines and try and gank terran before they plant on their attack.

fucking hate mines, fucking hate medvac speed and the fucking hellbat, go to hell!. terran u go screw your unlimited choice and flexibility. you stand behind a visage of easily accessible units for minimum cost and risk you freaking rat!

would love to see if you can get some burrow unburrow micro from terran to counter this

Edit: This micro looks really sick. Looks like pros will be able to do this kind of thing. Only hard part is vision. In the vid you have full vision but in game its another story.

I don't know about your skill, but this is extremely wonky and dangerous. I know it takes practice yaddayaddayadda but still... I don't feel this to be viable to use on a regular basis for me.

Wait wait wait, does this sort of micro mean that you could technically micro mutas in ZvZ and against workers better than people have been?

Nice little moments like these that change the match-up with solid reason to go Muta against Marine Mine.

i think amoving in zvz mass muta situation is still better. ithink it'shelpful Against stalkers and marines because of the stacking makingfocus fire harder. but only when pros get much better and more comfortable with it. this really takes advantage of the buffs the mutas got in hots.

and yes vision is still a big problem.

i just practised this for about 30 minutes and i could do it as a plat zerg. when it becomes natural to pros, i expect great things!

Doesn't seem much harder than pulling 1 muta ahead of the pack, and much safer!

Are you sure about this? Have you tested it? +1 flyer only adds .33333 damage to the 2nd bounce. +1 armor reduces that damage by 1, meaning that the bounce is doing 2.333333. An old thread stated that damage is actually stored as a full decimal number, not just an integer. The actual health is kept internally, and the displayed damage is just rounded.

This would mean that 30 +1 flyer 2nd glaive bounces would only do 70 damage to the mine, which would not kill it.

I could be completely wrong here.
