I want to be focused on improving so I thank you for these great tips. One question I would like to ask is what build per match up would you recommend? There are many on TLWiki and the strat forums but it's hard to find out which ones are up-to-date or even worth following...
My favorite TvZ guide is Doc's Definitive http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=241247
I have been trying out Korean standard builds vs T and P recently. Expand at 16 food. Have not seen any solid guides for these builds yet, just learn from watching GSL and trial and error. If you want to learn good macro and defense, expand at 16.
I also enjoy 2 rax pressure vs Protoss and I feel I am one of the few remaining Bio users in TvT on NA anymore. I still see many opportunities for Bio vs Mech.

This is an excellent thread and really should not be buried deep beneath all the dumb ones in the strategy forum. Bump this!

suggestion, the most important thing to beginning starcraft players imo
Build order success:
Have a planned build order for each matchup and decide it on the loading screen. Its important to have solid, and specific build orders.
In the early game every supply block or missed scv is a mistake that can add up to losing the game. It can throw off many timings you have that can lead to additional mistakes and can lead to an uphill battle that no one wants to deal with every game.
Know your build order by heart, use muscle memory to your advantage, and do a lot of double-checking!
Exercise: Do your build perfectly up to 30 supply and compare it to a replay of a masters level friend doing the same build. Try to be less than 5 seconds off from his finishing time.

This is sort of encapsulated within the determine your first mistake exercise. I added it under a community section though, thanks!

I feel like just having read the OP I've become a better player. You clearly know what you're talking about and also seem to have a knack for teaching. Thanks a ton for this thread.

Thanks man! Let us know when you get to GM =)

TvT is too risky for just 1 build order. I did look for 1 build order to be safe against all early Terran rushes yet not to give up the positional & economical advantage. Too bad, I fail miserably. So is better to have at least 1 more build in TvT

That could explain what I have been doing wrong

What is your army doing?
"Your tanks, if you have them, should be unsieged and on the move unless you are fighting or defending with them. No more static defense (just in case) sieges."
I have been playing with mobile tanks a lot. Here is a replay from ladder as an example. It shows how keeping my tanks mobile except when attacking and defending where my opponent does the opposite gives me map control and keeps him on 2 base.
I will try to post more relevant replays to the guide as I come across games.
