To be honest, $13k is nothing to even a small company, it's 1/5th the pay of one employee for one year. Again, it's nothing for the amount of advertising they'd get, which is essentially less than 50c per unique IP advertised? of course that's worth it, they probably made a profit on sheer mouse sales, and that's not even what a company is aiming for, but rather repeat customers and name association.

If you think about it from a corporate perspective, $13k is really nothing at all when the average company is playing entry level employees $30-50k per year, and advertising on TV, radio, etc is exponentially more expensive. Imo $13k is a bargain for what they got.

I'm more impressed and happy that Razer trusts a group of volunteers enough to represent their brand name. $13k is not a big amount to them, but it could be very negative publicity wise if TSL failed horribly or if we did something dumb like swear a lot or steal the money, so the actual decision to let us sponsor was a lot bigger than the dollar amount.

Where'd the last $3k go? Operating/Server costs?

And I just realized that Razer has been trying to go international (Razer Europe online in less than a week. (supposedly) and cn.razer.com is already online) and Starcraft's a really good way to do it. Starcraft has one of the biggest international reaches of any game out there.

Sama here.

At least i'm getting some of my money back in form of high class entertainment.

Actually i'm thinking about not picking up a razer mouse.

I prefer non-glitchy underpriced mice.

I'll probably go to the store today, pick up a logitech mini optical for $10, and rape some korean gosus.

on a related note, getting experience sponsoring a Starcraft ladder is a mean to be ahead when SC2 comes around, knowing what works and what not and how things can be done better.

is there any word on whether their sponsorship will carry into the seasons to come?
or was it a one time thing?

i think the sponsorship added the motivation and the level of professionalism to the tournament. it wasn't just a play-around, pat on the back and here's 10$ for winning kinda tourny.

I totally agree with the publicity/image impact that makes this "small" investment worth it, but i think there is an additional thing that makes it even "smaller" for them : it is related to the annual accounts of the firm (hope it's the english word for "bilan comptable").
In fact, when a company makes profits, it will have to pay taxes on those profits, so ideally, a company would like to make almost 0 profit and instead spend them in any kind of useful investment. And sponsoring is a viable investment.
So let's say the tax rate is like 40-50% (i don't know if it's realistic for Razer, but in Europe it's more or less this rate), and if Razer is a profitable company (i hope it is), it did not cost them 13k$ but 7-8k$ in the end.

But anyway, it's awesome that they did it, and i myself have a razer krait mouse which is awesome too. :-))

Just bought: Razer Diamondback 3G (red) + Razer eXactMat. I would have went the Logitech Way if it had not been for the TSL.

get the regular standard diamondback. its ideal for sc, it is sensitive enough if u want full blast, and it has no malfunctioning speed, meaning you can move your hand the fastest a human can move a hand sideways and it will keep up. however all other mouses have malfunctioning speeds at bad speeds. idk about the diamondback 3g if its malfunctioning speed is the same as is predecessor.

publicity and rep mostly.

for instance, with players, i didnt know who the fuck BRAT was. but because he was one of few terrans to advance into the TSL, and for his play against strong players, he became recognized.

sponsors can capitalize on that the same way

a bit funny though considering he has been known for years but it seems like alot of people didn't know about him. weird

it's good that we have sponsors like razer or other gaming releated company, they help to bring gaming to another level than the hardcore-only.

btw, i won't buy a razer mouse. they are technically excellent, but i don't like the shape of any of their mice. i prefer logitech =)

This is very true. I'm living in the UK at the moment and had no idea who Razer was or that they even existed before the TSL. My first though at seeing their website, though, was that it was a shame they didn't have a European distribution office and, at the same time, that the TSL would probably be an amazing opportunity for them to expand internationally. Seems they're one step ahead, though!

preceding the release of the most popular RTS game in history,
who better to try get promoting your product than the most hardcore, skilled and dedicated player base?

(which also happens to use english as a primary or alternative language).

sc players are a great asset in terms of marketing. Once we players realise this and show this to companies, i expect an increase of sponsorship in sc until sc2 release
