With SC2, this is no longer the case and we're considering making some changes. While we have some good data about our registered users who have selected their time zone, the majority of TL visitors are guests so we don't have any information about them. The sidebar poll is usable by both guests and registered users, so we hope it will paint a clearer picture of what time zones our visitors are from. EDIT: Some people are misinterpreting this post to mean that the poll will determine what TL time will be. This is not the case, I'm simply stating we are considering making some changes to the way times are displayed on TL and it would be helpful to know what time zones are the most popular.

I was pretty annoyed at converting KST and EST time in the first few months here and plus, daylight savings really confused me for a while >_>.. I don't know what I would do if it became EST, KST is my real time zone on TL! No matter where you change it to there will be at least 70% of the population that has the wrong time (according to poll when I posted). If it is to change, I imagine EST makes the most sense because the TL headquarters are here as well. It makes me sad to see parts of TL change like this ![]() ![]()

Apart from that, I got used to the time difference from Europe (CET) to the American timezones, but Korean time is still somewhat uncommon to figure out. Thus, I really find it useful, because with Korean time and with my time it's easy for me to check how late it is at any SC2-relevant places.

If you were thinking about changing it, wouldn't a more appropriate question be "what time zone do you want TL to run on?"

Maybe it would be possible to make it an option in your profile to change the clock to a different time zone if you wanted when logged in. But it seems like a bit of work for very little gain. The calander tells you the time to the next event anyway regardless of time zone and your computer (probably) has a clock in your time zone so threres very little need for an extra clock in my opioion. (which makes me wonder why I just put this much effort into thinking about it, muh)

Perhaps it would be too complicated, but adding zones alongside KST during huge tournaments (like MLG, assembly or ESL) would be usefull. I allways have to google time zones and compare to mine whenever I check tournament times.

It should be possible to get each registered user to enter his/her preferred timezone and use that to serve the times to the user. Or just save the preferred setting in a cookie. For anyone who doesn't want to hope/wait for this to happen, look at the "SCCalendar" or the "TeamLiquidNotifer" apps. Use the search box to find them. They are GREAT apps! And please include some more time zone options in the "Time" calculator (top right link). Edit: I have a reason for why it would be a good idea to change the time zone from KST to the user's choice: I live in a CET timezone. At 4pm (16:00) "todays date" changes on the Teamliquid event calendar (KST are +8 of CET). It's confusing (for me). Sometimes I have to click on the that date (+1 day by my CET calendar) to find events (typically from the EU/US) that are occurring later today (because in Korea they occour on a different date) > ![]() Cheers,

I'd much rather keep KST than change to Eastern or Pacific time. Korea is still the most important time zone for all things Broodwar, and lots of important SC2 events are held there too. How about you keep the forum time as it is, but make the TL calendar customized for each user's selected time zone?

That still leaves the CST and PST people (who outnumber the EST if you add them up) to "recalculate times". If there is no way to do the times on the time of the computer I would think the KST based timing should be kept as it is. People just have to get used to it and it doesnt matter if it is +7 or -11 or whatever ... just get used to it for your timezone. Starcraft is a global game and you should be able to adapt to global timings. KST is just fine and TL has done an admirable job of giving the times in their calendar.

To this I'd just like to add that in windows you can have it so that when you click on the clock, it will show your time zone, plus upto two other time zones time. For Windows 7: Click on the time. Click "Change date and time settings". Click the "Additional Clocks" tab. Check "Show this clock", select a time zone, and give it a name. Click OK. Now when you click on your clock it will show your main timezone clock as the large left one, then a smaller one (or two if you chose two) on the right of that. As my above post says, I have my main one showing GMT (my time zone), then one showing EST (for American TV shows), then a final one showing KST (for SC2 related stuff). Makes it alot easier to keep track of when TV shows are on, and when stuff like GSL etc. is on. ![]()

You've still got your core BW group living in KST, plus the biggest tournament (GSL) being KST. The locations for the smaller tournaments literally span the globe and there isn't one with both regularity and size to warrant being the timezone focal point outside of Korea.

EDIT: However for the sake of a new TL time zone, I would say just add a Eastern time(since im used to getting all my times in the format of 9/8 Central, where Eastern time takes a precedence) and I would also suggest maybe adding CET as well for the EU users. I will be kinda sad to see KST go since ive been looking at that for the last 5 years lol, but as shown here KST only makes up 2 percent, give or take, of the ppl who view this site.

why dont you just make the time variable so it changes for every user depending on his timezone settings (add it to your cms etc), like for example on esreality iirc, then there's no need for polling and no more annoying weird times.

If count each time a IP makes a http session, and convert that to a country based on the ip. it should be fairly accurate.

Add to this the location of the new(ish) Team Liquid office, and the fact that EST is the closest relevant timezone to the centre point between the West Coast of the USA and Eastern Europe - a geographical window that a vast majority of Team Liquid's demographic hails from, and EST seems like the most logical timezone to use for a multitude of reasons.

Also, maintaining KST good in any case. If SC2 events are all over the world, there's no central time for SC2. Virtually all BW events are in Korea, and they are televised regularly. There is still a central place for ESPORTS in general. Finally, I think it's a little misleading to have the poll say one thing and, in a practical sense, mean another altogether. Why not have a poll that says 'what time zone do you want the TL clock on' and base any changes on what people actually think about the issue at hand.

The sidebar poll is usable by both guests and registered users, so we hope it will paint a clearer picture of what time zones our visitors are from. I would love an option to customize our time. That is, we can choose which times to show -- everything or just, for example, US Central (my time here in Austin, TX, USA) and KST. With so many different places that do tournaments and the drastically different locales and tournament interests of TL members (e.g., only watches European tournaments and lives in (a) UK, (b) Germany or (c) Italy), I think that needs can only be truly met by full customization rather than another set clock which would, undoubtedly, end up running into the same problem as the KST one sometime in the future. I know that I, personally, have gotten rather annoyed because of the overwhelming amount of KST. Considering that I'm too lazy to go find the converter all of the time and am not an avid enough of a fan to know the difference automatically (I played BW but wasn't into TL and stuff like this back then), I end up relying on the TL calendar (and, even then, usually on what it says is "live" whenever I'm on).

Apart from just liking it because its "unique" or "tradition" I think the fact that just about 1% of the user have KST as their regular time is actually a plus. The european time zones (CET and GMT) make about 40% at the moment so it would make the most sense to switch to one of those (probably CET) but I can see a lot of the NA users not beeing pleased with this (i could see europeans be pissed if it would be the other way round I am not bashing people from the US). So keeping it on KST may be a bit inconvenient but its at least equally inconvenient for all of us. If you add that to the historical context of TL beeing using KST I think they should leave things as they are.

If you saying the EU time makes up 40 percent then Ill say the NA time makes up 47 percent, dont forget we have East, Central, and Pacific times. My way to solve the problem would be to put both US eastern time, and EU CET time. Im actually in Central but it makes sense for it to be east since thats all most times are given anyway

Then again, if it should be changed, obviously the UTC time zone is the only thing that makes sense, since it's the universal time zone. I would then suggest that some function is added to the site so that you can change all timestamps to localize with your own settings on your profile, and keep UTC+0 as the official time.

I'm guessing most young, tech-savy americans can estimate european time reasonably well too. However, when it comes to Korean time I am completely at a loss and I end up constantly googling the time in seoul or hovering over the gomtv countdown. I seriously doubt I'm the only one ;p. I'd say a change to either eastern US or CET would benefit both european and american visitors, once they get over the shock of 'loosing' this very very important issue ;p.
