TL time has been historically on KST time since that's where all the action was. With SC2, this is no longer the case and we're considering making some changes. While we have some good data about our registered users who have selected their time zone, the majority of TL visitors are guests so we don't have any information about them. The sidebar poll is usable by both guests and registered users, so we hope it will paint a clearer picture of what time zones our visitors are from.

EDIT: Some people are misinterpreting this post to mean that the poll will determine what TL time will be. This is not the case, I'm simply stating we are considering making some changes to the way times are displayed on TL and it would be helpful to know what time zones are the most popular.

could you make the upcoming events 'bar' run on the time of the users pc, i see events posted for times that mean nothing to me so i have to go to the full list to see a countdown in hours and minutes

lol its about time. I was pretty annoyed at converting KST and EST time in the first few months here and plus, daylight savings really confused me for a while >_>..
Anyways, now im accustomed to it and i dont mind but i think making the time changeable is an awesome thing

Ahhh, I voted EST- but please don't change!!

I don't know what I would do if it became EST, KST is my real time zone on TL! No matter where you change it to there will be at least 70% of the population that has the wrong time (according to poll when I posted). If it is to change, I imagine EST makes the most sense because the TL headquarters are here as well.

It makes me sad to see parts of TL change like this

CET, but fine with having KST as standard on TL. Enabled additional clocks(KST, EST, CET) in windows, so I don't even need to do the math.

Im from england so GMT, but ive always found it very useful that TL is on KST as it makes me have an easy way to work out the time difference for things hosted in Korea. Its pretty easy to know what time it is in ur own timezone as ur computer normal displays it.

I alternate between being in US Central and US Mountain time. Converting to any US timezone would be kinda cool though (for me at least, I'm sure no TL time zone is best for everyone.) US Eastern seems like the dominant one generally. You say Pacific is 3 hours behind Eastern, not that Eastern in 3 hours ahead of Pacific if you know what I mean.

Run it off GMT, most people know their time difference from GMT. Although, I've gotten used to converting from KST so it's not as much of an issue as it used to be.

Or better yet, have it set to the user's preferred time zone so every registered user will see all posts and the calendar set to their own time zone. But, I understand if you want to be lazy

KST is a really unbiased norm. I like it. Plus R1ch, you added that thing so we can convert to our own time zone now.

TL time has been historically on KST time since that's where all the action was. With SC2, this is no longer the case and we're considering making some changes. While we have some good data about our registered users who have selected their time zone, the majority of TL visitors are guests so we don't have any information about them. The sidebar poll is usable by both guests and registered users, so we hope it will paint a clearer picture of what time zones our visitors are from.

if thats the whole point of this pool then nevermind me voting EST and change my vote to KST :D

I am fairly new to TL, but I've already found it useful to have the Korean time shown in the top right. I mean, if you want to know your own damn time, watch your windows-clock or whatever.

Apart from that, I got used to the time difference from Europe (CET) to the American timezones, but Korean time is still somewhat uncommon to figure out. Thus, I really find it useful, because with Korean time and with my time it's easy for me to check how late it is at any SC2-relevant places.

I voted for EST, but don't change it please D: Or maybe GMT would be good too, since people normally know their +- number...it's always fun to look up at the TL clock and be like WTF IT'S THAT LATE? before I realize that a) they're on a 24 hour clock, so it being midnight but the clock is saying 12:00 wouldn't make any sense and b) it's in kst

EST, but before any changes get put in put up a "change" "don't change" poll (if any changes are being put in)

TL has always been KST and all of us bittervets (EVE term being butchered for BW era TLer use) will be so confused! I've gotten so accustomed to KST that I don't even have to sit and think about it anymore, I just know my KST time translated into EST now.

Either make it custom time or leave it KST, do not change it to US time plz.

If using custom time probably store all times as GMT, then convert it to the user setting time when displaying.

btw is it not possible to have multiple timezones up there next to eachother? one for each of the major timezones? because if that's possible then i'd say that's something that could be worth doing but if its not and there's gotta be one timezone displaying then my vote change faster then light to KST instead of CET!

Keep the Korean timezone please. If you choose CET the Americans wont like it, if you choose an American time zone the Europeans wont like it. Also the three different time zones in the US are quite confusing, especially for people who aren't so familiar with it. The GSL takes place in Korea and has by far the highest level of all tournaments right now.

You have really chosen a bad way to represent timezones, I mean where is MSK and EET?

You know there is a far better way, which is GMT +-

I myself am from Denmark, making me a GMT + 1, Brits would be GMT and Finland and Greece GMT +2 and Russia GMT +3. See no weired abbreviations just math that any geek can understand.

If you were thinking about changing it, wouldn't a more appropriate question be "what time zone do you want TL to run on?"

I think KST makes sense because the arguablly more important events are in Korea right now, I would leave it.

Maybe it would be possible to make it an option in your profile to change the clock to a different time zone if you wanted when logged in. But it seems like a bit of work for very little gain. The calander tells you the time to the next event anyway regardless of time zone and your computer (probably) has a clock in your time zone so threres very little need for an extra clock in my opioion.

(which makes me wonder why I just put this much effort into thinking about it, muh)

Yeah, "Teamliquid - Starcraft Progaming News" - KST would make sense since that's where all the major tournaments of both games are held.

Plus it's easy for me since KST is GMT +8 +1 for me

Please don't do this, all BW tournaments and even GSL tournaments run on KST. I don't think anyone would argue against OSL + MSL + PL + GSL > all other BW/SC2 tournaments combined so I don't see how changing the timezone from KST to anything else would make even the slightest bit of sense.

I like seeing KST even tho I live in EET -zone.

Perhaps it would be too complicated, but adding zones alongside KST during huge tournaments (like MLG, assembly or ESL) would be usefull. I allways have to google time zones and compare to mine whenever I check tournament times.

+1 to the above. It should be possible to get each registered user to enter his/her preferred timezone and use that to serve the times to the user. Or just save the preferred setting in a cookie.

For anyone who doesn't want to hope/wait for this to happen, look at the "SCCalendar" or the "TeamLiquidNotifer" apps. Use the search box to find them. They are GREAT apps!

And please include some more time zone options in the "Time" calculator (top right link).

Edit:
I have a reason for why it would be a good idea to change the time zone from KST to the user's choice:
I live in a CET timezone. At 4pm (16:00) "todays date" changes on the Teamliquid event calendar (KST are +8 of CET). It's confusing (for me). Sometimes I have to click on the that date (+1 day by my CET calendar) to find events (typically from the EU/US) that are occurring later today (because in Korea they occour on a different date) >

Cheers,

My time zone is CET.
I'd much rather keep KST than change to Eastern or Pacific time. Korea is still the most important time zone for all things Broodwar, and lots of important SC2 events are held there too.
How about you keep the forum time as it is, but make the TL calendar customized for each user's selected time zone?

Then why not create a poll that asks how people feel about it. This way all you get is flawed data.

'Cause that would require two polls.
Basically, IP-localization is not an exact method of determining users current country/time zone. And it wouldn't start the discussion we now have in this thread, which is probably quite benefitial.

What is the purpose of this poll, btw?

TL time has been historically on KST time since that's where all the action was. With SC2, this is no longer the case and we're considering making some changes. While we have some good data about our registered users who have selected their time zone, the majority of TL visitors are guests so we don't have any information about them. The sidebar poll is usable by both guests and registered users, so we hope it will paint a clearer picture of what time zones our visitors are from.

I would like the times to be displayed in the users selected Timezone, for registered users. Since it makes the most sense.

Guests could be auto detected (according to their IP adress - country - timezone of the country) or the result of this poll.

cheers,

Keep it KST. US time fucks over Europe (and vice versa), not to mention there are a few different times zones in the US anyway. The most popular time zone is US east but that is only at 28%, so you would still fuck over the majority of users.

KST is good because it is neutral between Europe and North America, and is useful for Korean tournaments too.

I'm not sure i follow this question. I thought all countries were in the GMT / UTC (+ / - ) x timezone. This differenciation of UTC plus for ex. all those timezones for USA seems to me like some few countries sticking with miles while the rest of the world uses meters and other SI units.

Which one should it be then? EST since they are the most? That still leaves the CST and PST people (who outnumber the EST if you add them up) to "recalculate times". If there is no way to do the times on the time of the computer I would think the KST based timing should be kept as it is. People just have to get used to it and it doesnt matter if it is +7 or -11 or whatever ... just get used to it for your timezone. Starcraft is a global game and you should be able to adapt to global timings. KST is just fine and TL has done an admirable job of giving the times in their calendar.

GMT here.

I'd say either keep it KST (what I'd prefer) or, if you have to, change it to EST.

I have GMT/KST/EST all showing on my windows clock, so one of the three is fine .

To this I'd just like to add that in windows you can have it so that when you click on the clock, it will show your time zone, plus upto two other time zones time.

For Windows 7:

Click on the time.
Click "Change date and time settings".
Click the "Additional Clocks" tab.
Check "Show this clock", select a time zone, and give it a name.
Click OK.

Now when you click on your clock it will show your main timezone clock as the large left one, then a smaller one (or two if you chose two) on the right of that.

As my above post says, I have my main one showing GMT (my time zone), then one showing EST (for American TV shows), then a final one showing KST (for SC2 related stuff).

Makes it alot easier to keep track of when TV shows are on, and when stuff like GSL etc. is on. .

Stick with KST. You've still got your core BW group living in KST, plus the biggest tournament (GSL) being KST. The locations for the smaller tournaments literally span the globe and there isn't one with both regularity and size to warrant being the timezone focal point outside of Korea.

why rnt u just putting multiple clocks up there. i would find it quite usefull to see the times in different parts of the world there. :o
especially since sc2 is international atm and u need to convert times on quite a regular basis ..

I think that KST should remain, but also add the most used US time zone and CET. It would be nice that if you hold the mousecursor over and upcoming event KST-time it would expand or showing an window with the time translated to other timezones like US Eastern and CET.

Its really nice with the KST time when watching the GSL but with all the worldwide tournaments with their times posted in diffrent timezones can get confusing.

CET. why not make it so that the events overview defaults at the selected timezone for the registered users? so for a guy who selected CET the events will show the times in CET etc.

selecting one timezone for all users will always leave a significant part of the forum behind as tl.net is a very geographically divided forum. the poll clearly shows that about 50% come from the US and about 36% from europe...

There's plenty of space on the interface for more times. When I used to currency trade, several times were important - like Japan, EST, PST, CET and GMT and most of the insider websites on the topic included all of these times. There is no reason why there shouldn't be more times including the major countries where SC2 is competitive. For a SC2 fan it's important to know the local times in order to figure out if he can watch various competitions like the GSL, MLG or IEM live; I have the Korean time saved as a clock on my desktop interface so that I don't have to +8 every time I want to know if I can watch a match live. Hence I think it's a good idea to show more times if they are supposed to have any practical use; KST, EST, CET and PST I think are the most important for a person who follows Starcraft.

I do agree with keeping it KST though, i have memorised that the GSL Events are at 18:00 KST, not 4:00 (?) AM EST.

I guess the default time of the site could be the KST or any other but there should be a option to set my account with the timezone i'm living so that all times presented on site would be my time!

that would be very cool!

Sweden, CET adding +1.
Actually, I've learnt to count backwards from KST over the years, so you might as well keep it as far as I'm concerned. Would piss off the americans less too, since no one gets "their first choice".

US Central represent

EDIT: However for the sake of a new TL time zone, I would say just add a Eastern time(since im used to getting all my times in the format of 9/8 Central, where Eastern time takes a precedence) and I would also suggest maybe adding CET as well for the EU users. I will be kinda sad to see KST go since ive been looking at that for the last 5 years lol, but as shown here KST only makes up 2 percent, give or take, of the ppl who view this site.

Probably better to sitck with a timezone that is constant ( not constantly moving with daylight saving and what not as the baseline).

That said i learn to tell when events are by calculating the difference in hours between current time in KST and when the event is supposed to start and then adding it to my local time so i don't think it will matter too much

Using any country's time will alienate the rest of the world (or even parts the same country), except for KST because of tradition. If a change is needed because of esports' global explosion, switching to a standard (GMT/UTC) is the logical step.

@admin guy that posted before:
why dont you just make the time variable so it changes for every user depending on his timezone settings (add it to your cms etc), like for example on esreality iirc, then there's no need for polling and no more annoying weird times.

EET here and I personally don't find it difficult for KST times on the site. If I have problem, I just add another clock on my computer to show the Korean time. The main clock is my own, another is for Korea and the problem is solved that easily. I would be completely lost if the times suddenly change to US times.

Javascript and alway convert timezones into localtime unless the user specifies a specific one in his profile?

While we have some good data about our registered users who have selected their time zone, the majority of TL visitors are guests so we don't have any information about them. The sidebar poll is usable by both guests and registered users, so we hope it will paint a clearer picture of what time zones our visitors are from.

You should be able to determine your user distribution in timezones based on the ip addresses. If count each time a IP makes a http session, and convert that to a country based on the ip. it should be fairly accurate.

CET!!!

Btw maybe you could include more clocks on the top right corner of the site. It would make live so much easier at times (mostly when there is some American tourney who doesn't include european time).

Gosugamers and some other sites do this already. Quite helpful actually.

I'm EST, but I think CET would a nice compromise to display on the site. It has a plurality of users thing going for it too.

I'd say UTC (Or UT1). It's the international base you calculate everything else from. With UTC being the international standard all you have to know is whether your time zone is +/- x from UTC. It's just easier.

But I do live in that time zone so I'm not unbiased.

Same here, US EST seems to make the most sense, plus that's where the new TL headquarters is located right? New York City?

Whilst I'm currently residing within GMT, I voted for EST as I spend significant amounts of time both in Europe and on the East Coast. No matter where I'm currently located, EST is usually my 'go to' time when referring to international events and broadcasts, as I know it is for many other people.

Add to this the location of the new(ish) Team Liquid office, and the fact that EST is the closest relevant timezone to the centre point between the West Coast of the USA and Eastern Europe - a geographical window that a vast majority of Team Liquid's demographic hails from, and EST seems like the most logical timezone to use for a multitude of reasons.

I'm US Central but I'd prefer if we stayed on KST!
Teamliquid taught me a lot about time zones and conversions and I want to find somewhere (here) to use that skill effectively!

GMT would be great, I think it would be the easiest compromise.

KST. I don't see the issue here. Any registered user gets time in their selected zone. Any guest has the current time KST on the top of every page and their own zone's time readily available to them via PC, watch, phone, clock etc. Why do people need TL to tell them what time it is where they are?

Also, maintaining KST good in any case. If SC2 events are all over the world, there's no central time for SC2. Virtually all BW events are in Korea, and they are televised regularly. There is still a central place for ESPORTS in general.

Finally, I think it's a little misleading to have the poll say one thing and, in a practical sense, mean another altogether. Why not have a poll that says 'what time zone do you want the TL clock on' and base any changes on what people actually think about the issue at hand.

It was stupid from me to vote before I know what's actually going on. I'd gladly take back my CET vote and put it on KST. I think it shouldn't be changed. Thanks.

I think that the "pick a specific a timezone" option is an excellent idea. Might be a touch tough for the site developers / maintainers though... Not sure.

I saw some post by Rich that whatever you time zone is, the Calander should auto change to reflect that for you so it's in your current time zone. It doesn't do that for me, it's always Korean time

EDIT: Why in the world do people care to see KST?

TL time has been historically on KST time since that's where all the action was. With SC2, this is no longer the case and we're considering making some changes. While we have some good data about our registered users who have selected their time zone, the majority of TL visitors are guests so we don't have any information about them. The sidebar poll is usable by both guests and registered users, so we hope it will paint a clearer picture of what time zones our visitors are from.

I would love an option to customize our time.

That is, we can choose which times to show -- everything or just, for example, US Central (my time here in Austin, TX, USA) and KST. With so many different places that do tournaments and the drastically different locales and tournament interests of TL members (e.g., only watches European tournaments and lives in (a) UK, (b) Germany or (c) Italy), I think that needs can only be truly met by full customization rather than another set clock which would, undoubtedly, end up running into the same problem as the KST one sometime in the future.

I know that I, personally, have gotten rather annoyed because of the overwhelming amount of KST. Considering that I'm too lazy to go find the converter all of the time and am not an avid enough of a fan to know the difference automatically (I played BW but wasn't into TL and stuff like this back then), I end up relying on the TL calendar (and, even then, usually on what it says is "live" whenever I'm on).

I voted CET but I really like the standardized KST time on TL (would vote KST if I'd knew the purpose of the pool), and as others pointed out GMT is also a good and fair choice.

Aussie aussie aussie! I think a time zone picker could be implemented where it shows your local time instead of the uniform time zone. Assuming it would require a lot of work though, with the times of events in local times and such.

CET Here, but i like the fact we get KST on TL. it wasn't always the case and i used to get confused with day light saving and that kind of stuff.
Changing for KST was a very good idea and i don't think there is any reason to question this for now.

I totally understand why it makes sense to think about some changes, but I like KST (although it used to confuse me a lot in the beginning).
Apart from just liking it because its "unique" or "tradition" I think the fact that just about 1% of the user have KST as their regular time is actually a plus. The european time zones (CET and GMT) make about 40% at the moment so it would make the most sense to switch to one of those (probably CET) but I can see a lot of the NA users not beeing pleased with this (i could see europeans be pissed if it would be the other way round I am not bashing people from the US). So keeping it on KST may be a bit inconvenient but its at least equally inconvenient for all of us. If you add that to the historical context of TL beeing using KST I think they should leave things as they are.

If you saying the EU time makes up 40 percent then Ill say the NA time makes up 47 percent, dont forget we have East, Central, and Pacific times. My way to solve the problem would be to put both US eastern time, and EU CET time. Im actually in Central but it makes sense for it to be east since thats all most times are given anyway

NZST here as well, but I'm pretty happy using Korean Time. I've gotten used to converting to Korean time, because Proleague/OSL/MSL used it and GSL uses it now.

Don't you dare change the timezone! It's so much easier when everyone just agree that KST is the timezone we use. No need to pick a side between the US and EU community.

Then again, if it should be changed, obviously the UTC time zone is the only thing that makes sense, since it's the universal time zone. I would then suggest that some function is added to the site so that you can change all timestamps to localize with your own settings on your profile, and keep UTC+0 as the official time.

Then again, (young) europeans incl. myself generally have a decent 'feel' for US time, as in, I can reasonably estimate what time it is in NY without much trouble. I'm guessing most young, tech-savy americans can estimate european time reasonably well too.

However, when it comes to Korean time I am completely at a loss and I end up constantly googling the time in seoul or hovering over the gomtv countdown. I seriously doubt I'm the only one ;p. I'd say a change to either eastern US or CET would benefit both european and american visitors, once they get over the shock of 'loosing' this very very important issue ;p.

I'd say just keep the time as KST. Sure, sc2 isn't completely korea centralized like sc1 was, but it is still the simplest time zone overall considering how global TL is.

I do have to ask: why not just look at the IPs that connect and see where they are? Then you'd already have a count and can then show us it for the most accurate view and then ask for opinions.

For a global audience, GMT/UTC is the best choice, I would think. Personally, I'd prefer EST since it's very easy to convert that to my timezone (CST), but GMT would work better for everyone, considering every timezone is classified by it's number of hours before/after GMT.

Maybe i'm crazy, but i'd really like it if the times on the site weren't KST. When i was new here, i had no idea what was going on. I couldn't tell when forum posts were made at all.

Also, the events on the sidebar at 18:00 or 10:00 mean very little.

I'm all for options though. If it's feasible, having users choose the timezone that appears would be ideal, methinks.

Maybe you could add the geographic location of the time zones -- until quite recently, I mistakenly thought that EST meant European Standard Time, and it is actually a valid abbreviation for European Summer Time, so I could imagine quite a few users making the same mistake.

Edit: ignore this, the poll already calls them US Eastern and US Pacific time.

Actually did click on the "other" as its +2 of CET and does not really count as CET. If I would knew what this poll was about, would have voted KST all the way.

I don't see an issue having more than one time in the upper right corner, it has plenty of empty space to fit 3-4 different time stamps.

CET here but then i read the reason for the poll and just want to agree with keeping it KST rather than changing it if it is impossible to adjust for each user...

TL running on US time would be a pain, and i imagine US users would think the same if it ran on CET time. KST is a nice compromise adn TL would not be the same without it.

EDIT: Some people are misinterpreting this post to mean that the poll will determine what TL time will be. This is not the case, I'm simply stating we are considering making some changes to the way times are displayed on TL and it would be helpful to know what time zones are the most popular.

In other words, TL.net is preparing to move to a US time zone, and is using this poll to test the water and predict the reaction its user base will have.

it sounds like it'll be CET and not an US Time zone referring to the poll.

But as some other people pointed it out GMT / UTC would fit well because everybody knows the difference between there timezone and GMT

Exactly. UTC and GMT are universal. Using timezones like CET or US Pacific or whatever is like using miles, gallons or pints, instead of meters or liters. Use something universal, and stop with the nonsense of having tons of timezones. Of course each region will try to have the easier time, and thats the one without any hour difference. By using an universal one everyone has the same treatment. Only in US do i see people refer to times as US Pacific or w/e. In portugal we don't use Portugal Continental Time, or Portugal islansds time, or German east time, German west time. That's ridiculous. Imagine if all countries did that. How would it be? Google UTC or GMT to see how it works, if you don't know, and see for yourself how it's much more convevient than using other timezones.

In conclusion, best reasonable option by far is GMT / UTC for the reasons mentioned above.

Yep: Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific times.

Also some outlining areas might use different times zones. For example Newfoundland a province in Canada uses NST which is 30 minutes ahead of Eastern.

Why not just have a standard customisable timezone clock at the top that pulls the timezone from the player profile?

It would make it a lot easier for me being able to play in GMT, and fine for those who wish to stick to KST.

Pacific

It would be nice if there was another time display for our select time zone in the top right corner, but I don't mind doing the little time conversion in my head otherwise.

Is it possible to co ordiante the times on TL to our local time? so instead of having it all KST, its just whatever place you are from, the only thing that saves me atm is that the calender says in how many hours something happens which makes it easy to figure out when things are happening

not as much as from the us. keep in mind that most of europe has the same timezone while the us has 4(?)

Why does that matter in this case? Even if you were on the east coast you would still have to convert west coast time to your own... Keep it KST though!

[edit] oops im a tired reet, please ignore.

Yep: Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific times.

Also some outlining areas might use different times zones. For example Newfoundland a province in Canada uses NST which is 30 minutes ahead of Eastern.

Yes but people in Europe have 3 time zones not 1, GMT (+0) CET (+1) and EET (+2)

Its pretty close. As for now:

CET +GMT+EET 4872+2302+451=7625

US E + US P + US C 3877+2160+1530= 7567
