I would like to express my distaste for the notion of changing the TL time zone.
While the advent of SC2 has started many tournaments in foreign time zones, The GSL still represents more events than any other time zone. It also consistently has a higher level of competition than anything else in the world, and is the only tournament that is important enough to receive “featured news,” (the TSL will have similar competition level, but since it has not started yet I can still make these statements). This doesn’t even take into account broodwar, which is exclusively in KST.
While the vast majority of TL isn’t from Korea, a change in time zone would only benefit those who live in the time zone that we change to (because it is winning the poll, let’s say EST). Only 33% of TL lives in EST, so more people will be satisfied if more than 1/3 of people want it to stay the same, even if 60% would want it to change. It should also be considered that the number people who want it to stay the same would need to be less than 33%, as there are people like me who live in EST, but wants the KST to stay.
There is also an argument to be had for the tradition of it, but that one is a lot harder to articulate.
Honestly I feel a bit betrayed by the poll. If you wanted to know which time zone most TL users wanted why can’t you just ask that? I will now be forced to consider the ramification of my responses from now on. Poll about what your ancestry is? Now TL is not only in polish, but only covers eastern European events. Poll about favorite streamer? Now TL only supports 3 streams. Poll about favorite xbox game? Now TL is no longer a starcraft site. Yes, these examples are on the extreme side, but I’ve made my point.
I feel that R1ch did not post the whole story in his brief post, but I can only respond to the informaton I am given. Please keep it the same.
+ Show Spoiler +I feel compelled to announce that it pains me to argue in terms of SC2 and leave broodwar as an afterthought, but I have a feeling that an argument centered around broodwar would be overlooked by most

Keep in mind, if TL changes their timezone to EST, it would not only benefit those in the EST, it would benefit everyone in the US in general as it is MUCH easier to make a timezone conversion from EST to say PST or CET when compared to making a timezone conversion from KST to PST and having to deal with a day ahead etc etc.

Oh, I didn't know the reason for poll was that. Does seems kinda like cheating. Why not just make a poll, "What time zone you want TL to run at?".
Not that it's a big deal really as OP is painting it to be, but KST zone definitely feels like part of TL's personality and I'd hate to see it changed.

Don't worry guys, we're not going to be changing anything if we don't feel that it is an improvement over what we have at the moment.

Your argument is flawed. The poll asks what timezone people are in, not what timezone people want TL in. It could very well be that while 60% of TL is outside EST, 85% of TL would rather have EST than KST.

Most of TL's population is split between Europe and the Americas seeing as TL is a generally a site for foreigners who don't know Korean.
It makes sense to use a timezone that at least a great deal of the TL user base would be able to easily decipher.

No clue why the site uses a fixed timezone, that's quite a bit 2000, no clue why tl does not just add a profile option which converts everything, just like it does for the date/time forum markup code

As for your other examples, they're pretty ridiculous, it's very hard to take your criticism seriously when you're suggesting that we'd switch the entire language of our site or make TL not about Starcraft because of a poll.

If R1ch's post is correct, then why would want to know where users are as opposed to what users want?
And I could have gone with less extreme examples, those were just the first ones I came up with. But to my credit, I would have thought that basing the time zone of of a (seemingly) poorly worded poll would have seemed nearly as absurd. Maybe these will be more to your liking...
Poll about you favored user competition on TL? Eliminate everything but SC2 liquibet. Poll about favorite animal? Change team liquid theme to chipmunks.

Hyperbole and sarcasm is not a great way to get your point across...

The point is, when you say stuff like this, it's sooo hard to take you seriously.

We usually welcome criticism and feedback about policies users disagree with, but your style of posting is not constructive and the way you present your argument is obnoxious. You could have said what you wanted to say in a much better way with more reasonable arguments. We'd still disagree with you, but at least it'd be respectable.
I don't really have much more to say about it other than it's not appreciated.

The "official" timezone of TL aside, is there any discussion/thoughts about having users potentially being able to change the calendar/clock to show their personal timezone?
I agree that there should be one timezone in which to centralize everyone to on TL, but it'd be nice if by setting my personal timezone in my profile to MST, I could see the calendar specifically in MST; also possibly add another clock in my timezone below the "official" TL time.

This would be a wonderful feature. It just seems more difficult than it should be to figure out what time everything is.

I don't want to start a new topic, and I think it's ok to post this in here, and it's not that big of an issue but when the clock hits xx:30 it's a bit awkward when you see this

I just saw the change from a Korean time to, ETA. I love it.

It's not really related to the main time zone issues, but since it's an often used feature we felt it made more sense to show it in this way for now.
|
Well the reason I posted here is because the clock says 10h 60m instead of 11h 00m, and it's without logic at least for me. :b
