Note, speed is measured in kilobits/sec (kbps), this is not the same number you see on your download speed in your browser. Use www.speedtest.net if you aren't sure.

3 mbps on a good day, which isn't bad considering it's wirelsess isp, not satellite. The problem is it drops me in-game sometimes but I can't complain because it's between that or dial-up here...

On a 768kb plan for ages, and it blows. Apparently the phone lines now support up to 3mb. For awhile when we moved in the lines could not even support DSL. We'd get a call offering DSL instead of dial-up, we'd say sure, the company would then say "actually we can't help you out, sorry!" Finally worked on the third attempt.

Most annoying is that when I talked to them recently I was told a price. People that pay the bill called back the next night and got told $20 a month higher. Checked online and the offer (priced locked in for 2 years, at least) is $5 higher than I was told. Call back and get an offer that matches the online offer (lawl), but still aren't willing to honor their original offer (and I wasn't told that it was limited time, act now, or anything of that sort - just that our internet and phone are old and we could save by bundling). Might still get the upgrade soon, but no confirmation yet as frugality is high on the list of current priorities.

And a friend is about to get 35mb fios and likes to bring it up, though all my friends feel bad for how utterly horrid my internet is.

I do feel sorry for blooddrunk. Didn't know it was still possible for someone to have slower internet than me.

speed test says 18mbps.gom's checker says 4300kbs.
then again the difference between connecting to korea vs. a server within the state.
at the same time, I sort of doubt my wifi is actually, consistently 18mbps. maybe when i'm over a lan line, there is a central telephone switch across the street from my campus, so we probably have a mega fast internet connection.

The first night I got here I checked and found I was getting 20Mb/s. Just now it gave me 5Mb/s.

And this is from Virgin Media, the ISP apparently leading the charge against speed cons.

I got 14.86 Mb/s. I think that's ok for Germany. I read an article, the german telekom is testing a 1 Gb/s download fibre glass connection at the moment, but only 1 family in all of Germany is testing it so far

Imagine how awesome that would be. Makes me cry when I think back to my dial up days.

"The United States is lagging behind the rest of the world in high-speed Internet connectivity, claiming eighth place in levels of broadband greater than 5 Mbps, Akamai's "State of the Internet" report shows. South Korea has maintained its top position and Romania soared up the list to third place with nearly twice as high of a percentage of high broadband connectivity as last quarter."

I could pay like $10 more for premium service (>100mbps) but I don't bother, it's already disgustingly fast.

Here, there's only ONE service provider (everything else is mobile/broadband) ..... its USD28.09 for a 512 kbps. And normally i only get 60-70% as advertised. yehh sucks i know. but still being able to play BW and sc2 is awesome. : )

What the fuck, how does everyone get >= 10mbps? I think some of you might be confusing things here. "DSL 16000" (that's how it is coined here) for example is only ~2mbps (at best), not >=10.

DSL 16000 has 16Mbps down in theory(but more like 10Mbps in practice). 16Mb/s = 2MB/s
The annoying thing is that it has only 1Mbps up, so uploading stuff takes ages.

There are 8 bits in 1 byte
10Mb/s = 1.25MB/s
Windows Explorer shows download speed in bytes, ISPs show speed in bits.

I can only hope that my dad will replace our internet eventually. Sadly, that wont ever happen. he wouldn't even change internet even if it was faster AND cheaper! My dad hates that we (the kids) spend quite some time ont he internetz, so hes not going to contribute to that.

Use the link in R1CH's OP, which will take you to a test site, once page has loaded you can click the begin test button - use the fault settings to test with your nearest Test Site.

I had DSL Light for 3 Years (368kbit) but got 2mbit this week. German Internet sucks in the more rural regions.

I do like I always do on these polls and viewed the results first so I can vote for the option with the most votes. I can't help it that I always cave into peer pressure.

I pay for 10 mbps/512kbps upload, but I get an average of 7-8 mbps reading from speedtest.net
I share the connection with my roommate as well, and both of us use wifi.

Most TL users are in college. Ergo, most have great download speeds.

(It's not the case for me, personally, but it makes complete sense.)

It isn't entirely correct though. The speed I have, through my router, is 20Mb/1Mb. I've confirmed it via torrents, I can hit 2mb/sec.

Seems, upload is having a bit of a bad day. Usually a bit more on par with the download.

It's interesting reading this kind of stuff, you quickly realize how spoiled we are with internet connections in sweden. In our appartment all three of us have our own 100/100 connection which means we have about 300mbit in total both up and down here. A bit over the top yes, but why not when it costs like 6e/month each?

A Company is currently planning to get our village a light-wave cable infrastructure if more then 60% of our 5000 inhabitants change their provider to them. Would get 50+ up and down then but I guess when they are finished I will have moved out of my parents house anyway -.-

That speedtest website is strange. It's results are always significantly below what I can achieve when downloading from a good server. For example today it showed 7.5Mb/s, but my typical download speed is 10Mb/s.

I'm paying for 5mbps dsl but because of some lousy wiring in my apartment the max I'm getting is 2.5mbps. I'm planning on switching to cable in like a month for 10mbps service or higher. Not that I need it, I'm not much of a download freak.

I don't know why, but Lithuania (where I come from) is really advanced in Internet Technologies. If you go to the speedtest.net page and click on World results on the top you can see yourself that it's 4th in the world for dl speed and 2nd for ul speed which is fantastic considering it's a very small country (Only 3 million people).

We have these 3 fields that lithuanian scientists are really advanced which are internet technologies, lasers and biomedicine.

Usually around 1Mb/s though it doesn't matter since the quality is terrible so it's impossible to game on 99.9% of the time in any game. Was on really bad dialup until 08 and now I'm on some crazy wireless. I'd take 512kbs if it was stable :|

I live in the countryside I can't really play between 5pm-10pm; it gets really laggy at that point.

Terribad AT&T DSL... Getting u-verse soon as they finish planting the fibre cable in my neighborhood. We even got the little card in the mail saying, 'U-verse is available in your area!' I went down to the AT&T store and the clerk told me, 'yeah, no... u-verse won't be available in your neighborhood until April 2011. However, we can boost your dsl if you'd like new service!' /leave store >_>

wtb fibre internet and tv! Only getting 5 football games a week, which does NOT include Monday Night Football is really lame...

According to CWRU, this is the second fastest in America, behind NASA. I'm dubious of their claim; also, NASA's internet on a user access level isn't even that mind blowing (at least not at GRC).

3 mbps on a good day, which isn't bad considering it's wirelsess isp, not satellite. The problem is it drops me in-game sometimes but I can't complain because it's between that or dial-up here...

I don't think satellite would help you. It implies something like a 300ms latency due to the distance.
You might get good bandwidth, but the latency is bad. I just thought I'd mention it, because latency kills you with any application where you want real-time input.

actually no, it doesnt work that way.
A game where the first thing you do is scout with a “worker”. Does that make any sense? Who scouts with a “worker”? That’s like sending out the janitor to perform recon, what general would do that? Retarded game.

16mbps here in the United Arab Emirates => max you can get here is 30mbps and it usually sucks because our ISP is so terrible and its the only one in this country, kind of funny because small rich countries should have one of the best internet in the world ... oh and i pay about 170$ for my 16mbps =/

Wow, I'm jealous...Canada a decade ago was a world leader in residential broadband.

But with our telecom/cable virtual monopolies almost no progress has been made.
