Edits: Anyway it would probably be best to update the banner to better attract the undoubtedly huge number of prospective TLers that are gonna be cruising the interwebs for SC2 sites starting the 27th. But by all means stick with the horse theme. On the other hand, if the classic banner scares people off, perhaps TL doesn't want them. | ||

My concern is more about the design and the overall structure. I don't want you to replace the clean and simple design by some sort of déja vu video game design with unnecessary sophistications, but i would appreciate if you could manage to get it a fresh new 2010-ish look. The structure is definitely not the best. So many text and sections on the front page makes it really hard for new comers. And the way we navigate in the site could be much more intuitive. (One of the big concern being the way stuff get lost into old posts/news.) | ||

This is a great idea imo! A Banner Contest(SC2 Theme) to celebrate the release of of SC2, the selected winning banner will be put up for let's say a month along with his or her name. I think this would entice a lot of newcomers to see how TL has active community fun activities. On release date was my original plan but 5 days isn't a long time to produce solid results.. unless we have a dedicated TL! Thoughts? | ||

I think the banner is unique, and looks good. It may not be directly relevant, like a picture of kerrigan or Jimmy, but it also shows that TL is more then just a starcraft fan site, and for that reason i think it should stay. Also if it got changed the horse on my shirt would seem slightly out of place. | ||

a big part of the TL community is from BW, they played a game for over 10years. they will likely not vote for a change. the people most likely to vote for new site design is the younger generation who found the boards after picking up SC2. apart from the horses, i prefer the board style, over the newer generation boards with huge banner signatures and achievements and titels and what-not. someone posts a 2 line comment and it eats up half a screen height of browser. it's a msg board, keep it about the text. | ||

This is the first time i even noticed them. So for this new user atleast, it certainly didn't look bad, it just blended in nicely. As someone said above though, it took me a while to realise if this was the right site, not because of the horses though. I was more confused by the funky layout, usually banners down the left hand side link to articles and pages around the site, and there is a seperate link to the forums. So i spent atleast 5-10 minutes figuring out what was going on. (i'm probably just a bit slow though) :D | ||

Having been here for almost 3 years I'm used to it, but it definitely looks like it was done during middle school art class, and the "random missing sections of the first letter of a word" font seems kind of weird when you stop and think about it. I think the banner should be updated. The magic horse motif is unique, so keep that...just make it more sexy & modern. edit: also, what happened to the bottom right corner of the banner? Looks like someone tore the corner off haphazardly | ||

But I do have an idea after seeing the original (and assuming the vote is to keep or update it) : maybe crop it a little less so you can see all their heads and feet (and maybe even use the mountains somewhere). That way it will look more like the original artwork ... especially if you flip it horizontally. The idea of it being camouflaged to NOT look like a "gamer' site is also kinda clever. I've only been a member for a year now, lurked a couple years prior off and on, and I will admit it will be initially alien and disquieting to pull up TL every day and not see that banner greeting me, but no one will deny that the site, the community, and the game(s) we care about so much are going through changes, and we should embrace it and make the most of it. Change that banner that means far more than a thousand words to anyone who has spent time here? Ok, but only because I trust the TL team to replace it with something equally representative of what the current banner has become. Keep it blue, keep at least a single horse involved even if its no longer the central image, and create an addendum to the new member welcome post / rules which shows this banner and describes how it became representative of us. Its effect, so important being at the top of every page, yet so out of place, strange, but connected to such a strong site... its a weird mix which I feel truly gives newcomers a sense of this place being different, proud yet respectful, almost like it intimidates posters against posting stupid shit and TL devolving into just another unrefined internet community. Can a new banner capture the spirit and tradition as well as separate TL from the rest of the world to newcomers at first glance? Sure, and we shouldn't fight evolution so long as it is an improvement, but I do not envy the tremendous task of creating / choosing a new one. | ||

When I open TL, I have every single thing I could possibly want to browse within 1 click reach. The frontpage of TL is by far the best design of any site I've ever been to, edging over google because of having to juggle a whole different volume of stuff to fit on one screen. | ||

1. The horses, if they are meaningful to the older crowd should stay 2. But perhaps we can update the look of the website in a cleaner/streamlined way 3. I do not understand the reason for the horses being there and I find it pretty random 4. I don't think keeping/removing the horses will play a huge role to teamliquid.net anyways, it's more about the people and content here 5. If I had any power in moderating this site I would probably keep horses but use a different image just because: a) culture/tradition is always good and should be preserved b) the look of the horses/banner looks like something from 1993 GL | ||

The only reason to change the banner now would be to make the site more appealing for new members coming in for the sc2 wave. And if TL started to change the things that make it unique just to try and capitalize on this it would feel like TL was selling out. Although I wouldn't have a huge problem if a new banner was created as long as A) it still had the horses/liquid and B) had nothing to do with starcraft. | ||

EDIT: on second thought, i think the entire website should be revamped. I would have made an account months earlier if i hadnt thought that TL was a piece of crap. While I know that its not now, a couple of my friends still refuse to give it a chance after being spoiled by every other forum. The biggest issue, is probably the lack of avatars. Not only does it improve the appearance, it also seems to help with quick recognition. On other websites, ill remember people as their avatar. While on TL, i constantly just barely catch myself thinking of someone as nameless, then glancing up and realizing that that was actually someone that i know. | ||

Maybe if there was a contest to redesign the logo and there were some great graphics designed the results of the poll might change. Not saying there has to be a winner or even if something awesome showed up people still might not want to change. As of right now the choices are really "the status quo" or "some unknown entity." On the other hand, it's confusing and really just kind of bizzare for new people who come to the website. It has nothing to do with the content whatsoever, and tells you nothing about the website at all. In fact, it's actually somewhat misleading; at first glance I would take it for some kind of Lord of the Rings or horse-racing/raising fan website. Personally, I think it should be kept in some form, but that it could be...I don't know, spruced up a bit. Made cooler. Or you could keep it the way it is but add a Starcraft logo or image somewhere at the top so new people will know what's up. But I don't think it should be totally removed. | ||
