I voted "not post and browse only," but chances are there would be a lot less activity so I'd really have nothing interesting to browse, so I was thinking about "stop visiting completely." But if somehow there's relevant discussion, I'd certainly browse.

But TL and Blizz forums are completely different. TL actually contributes to the Starcraft community.

edit: uh-oh. 1199 posts. I wanna stay a Lurker forever...

I REALLY don't like the idea of the use of real names online becoming common in any way. God save the wild west Internet I know and love.

Chill would get trolled by TDot in real life. As much as TL as a community is better than the BNet forums (I'm pretty sure anyway, never really been there), we still get some freaks in here sometimes that probably shouldn't have access to people's real names.

I would probably just browse only. I already post fairly infrequently, so it's not like my habits would change drastically. I'm not sure if I'd give up liquibet or fantasy though.

I would browse less and less until I left most likely. I'm pretty sure the community would shrink fast, then again you could make a fake name and use that... Which I would do if there was no other choice.

TL doesn't have a problem with trolls and such because it's so heavily moderated. There's no "upside" for offering this at TL, but there would probably be a small upside with offering this for blizzard because it will reduce a lot of the trolling and smurfing. The WoW boards are filled with level 1 characters that were created just to trash talk because people are too scared to do it on their main account because they will reflect poorly on their guild.

Team Liquid is one of the top google results for a noticeable portion of the stuff I type into google, even completely unrelated stuff to SC. When some employer googles my name, I don't want the first result to be me talking casually about a videogame, even if I do so respectfully and in a non-trolling manner.

But there's no option for "Circumvent the system to use a fake name" which is what I would actually do.

I would be the same, since my ID contains my name anyways. TL is my family and friends, and we even have irl meets. TL is a community, not a tool like Blizzard forums. Blizzard forums are used by anyone and everyone, it isn't a community, it's just for getting updates and technical support.

I would post the same, only because I'm usually not one to start flame wars or make enemies, so I could care less if people know my name. Still though, I certainly don't see how it could make too many people post MORE, as denoted by the poll, so there seems little benefit to making such a switch imho. The current TL approach seems perfect as is.

I wouldn't change my behavior. Many people on TL already know my real name, and if you care to know, I'm sure you could find it. I can't say I'd post more because I already spam TL too much as it is.

Lol "Stop visiting TL completely"... this raises a couple questions
I'm sure if our old posts were kept hidden (# of posts kept). Then people can start new (And still browse!)! Refering to change my behavior option.

Looks like I'm with the majority here though, just continue browsing

Epic generic name. lol.

I chose browse TL. I don't post much as it is, and my last name is family unique, as it's been Americanized (oh how I miss my old last name. sigh.) and anyone with it is a relative. So I'm an easy find.

Don't care if people on TL know my real name, heck I don't care so much if blizzard customers figure it out, but if I had to choose between the two I'd be okay with TL. TL is chill, I'm cool with everyone on TL, except for roffles that guy should be dancing.

I voted stop visiting altogether but that's a lie

I'd probably just be mad and nerd rage a lot but still visit, kind of like how I get mad and nerd rage at bad programming/balance in sc2 but still play it.

o.O people really think it's the worst thing in the history of the Internet if Blizz does this, but perfectly fine if an unofficial community site is behind it? Currently only 58% voted to stop posting here, as opposed to 78% in the poll for the Bnet forums. You'd think the same arguments would work against TL (zomg that guy is pro-MBS, let's start harassing them irl!).

I honestly don't care. The only way someone could harm me by knowing my real name is if they use it to look up where I live (mind you, that's not put anywhere on the internet, you can only find the university I go to), then proceed to annoy me in real life, which I'm pretty sure is prosecutable by law to begin with.

Plenty of people I play with know my real name anyway, so finding that out for someone willing to go such lengths wouldn't even be that hard.

Actually this is a kinda moot question (since the TL staff cant prove I am not Robert Kotick) OR it is missing one key answer:

I would make a fake name and post as much as I wanted to with that.

The intention of the poll is clear, however I am trusting TL a million times more than Blizzard with my data, since they are not currently making money from the site and dont have greedy shareholders who demand big profits. So this poll *should* be held over at Battlenet and not here.

I still don't get how real id should stop trolling...
a lot of people say: "Yeah, i will enjoy the fact that there will be less trolling etc..."
I dont see a difference if someone is going to be banned as user1 or as Bobby Steward
(he will still return as user2 or Bobby Stewart)
I suppose on blizzard forum they would go as far as to ask for proof:
"So you're Bobby Steward?"
"Yeh..."
"Driving licence!"
"..."
And I don't have a doubt, that this Real ID stuff will also be used during gameplay...

Anyway, back to the Poll:

I think, that I would still read the forum tough or post under a fake name...

Wasn't saying it's a good idea, but that technically it's "fine" for the other 42%. Anyway, the main point was that there's a 20% difference between the results even though the setting hasn't really changed at all. All the people who could find your information at Bnet forums could do it almost as easily at TL (I assume it'd be a little easier to make the connection between a game character and a real person at bnet forums, but the point stands).

Same. Many of our top posters have their names known and some have even gone beyond that by staying in each other's houses or sharing hotel rooms, etc. People share much more personal information than their names. Even Zia, who the community had every reason to hate, had his real identity outed haha.I think there are some notable exceptions like Sonuvbob who I certainly wouldn't want to lose as a poster.

And then we have http://www.teamliquid.net/tsld/players/

Mind you this applies to TL only. I'd probably stop posting on any other site.

o.O people really think it's the worst thing in the history of the Internet if Blizz does this, but perfectly fine if an unofficial community site is behind it? Currently only 58% voted to stop posting here, as opposed to 78% in the poll for the Bnet forums. You'd think the same arguments would work against TL (zomg that guy is pro-MBS, let's start harassing them irl!).

Well, because it is the worst idea ever. And 58% intending to stop posting is hardly "perfectly fine". A A lot of the same arguments do work against TL but weigh differently.

Some people may believe that the risk of drawing harassment from heated arguments is lower here because TL is moderated and thus some undesirables are filtered out. I feel that many TL-netters have a measure of pride in their community and strive for at least a semblance of civility in their altercations. I get annoyed at sentiments like, "BW is a low quality game." or "Protoss is easy mode even above the C ranks." but I'm not about to act like a child about it, and I believe a significant portion of my fellows here wouldn't either.

Of course marketers/information traders, account hackers, and employers would all gain almost the same info on the poster and his/her gaming habits via real names on TL as on the Blizzard forums. Some people just aren't concerned about that. I believe someone mentioned this in the main thread, but to reiterate: people without sensitive property or information to be compromised, without relatives or loved ones to protect, or without the prospect of undergoing a job search have nothing to be worried about. People ignorant or in denial of specific risks also, in their own minds, have nothing to worry about.

I would only browse if TL implemented this (I'm aware this poll is most likely rhetorical), at least until a superior Starcraft community arises.

WE could learn a lot about tdotkrayz with Real ID.

Also, I'd stop visiting because if we had to display our names, according to the 2000 U.S. Census I'm the only person in the country with the name I have, and from my experience it's not common in other places around the world.

Using a fake name ftw

EDIT: My main opposition for Real ID is if the kid I'm terrorizing one day goes on TL and finds my blog. Then I'd be seriously fucked.

Since about 2/3 of the posters would dissappear I doubt I would stay. And if 2/3 of the posters dissapear the discussions would die down significantly and TL would slowly die.

On the other hand I have 10k+ posts on a community where I use my real name.

Also real names would be much more harder to remember, than simple nicknames. Imagine everyone with their real name.. Who is who? lol so confusing!

Well it's a problem that this poll's answers contain too much bias.

I don't particularly care for Real ID but if I'm objectively answering this question, then it'd be "post with more care" and I suspect that's how a lot of people would alter their behavior if the system was forced on them.

"Post more, it's better" is obviously a sarcastic option and has no place in a serious poll. "Post less or differently" bundles up anyone who would choose "post with more care" as a negative.

Well anyway... my gut answer was "not post and browse tl only" when confronted with those choices and it just goes to show what direction this kind of phrasing will skew the answers.

I wouldn't change much to me, although most of my real life friends are unrelated to any kind of pc gaming scene so they probably wouldn't understand why I have many posts on certain community pages if they'ld google my name. Since my plan is to study medicine and become a doctor I'm also not very scared that some future employer would google me and think I'ld spend too much time on the internet or reveal my personal life too much or something.

I don't tend to troll or insult people unless they are so stupid that I'ld insult them in real life as well so no changes for me. I'ld rather care on certain other internet pages :X

I wouldn't change my posting habits because I don't troll, and it seems like this community wouldn't have stalkers. People are worried so much on the Battle.net forums because it is a way bigger community (not in terms of quality though, LOL) so they might have stalkers there, especially if you're a girl. Also people wouldn't be able to troll on Bnet forums either. >_>

Blizzard should just do first name and last name initial.
For example Billy Pumpkin (I got bored) = Billy P.
And I voted not change my behavior, Christopher isn't such a noncommon name, and my last name, ehhh... it's not that weird. I mean it's asian so how diverse can it be.

Teamliquid's CURRENT success and amazingly high (by comparison) average post quality really exemplifies the virtues of strong moderation. Therefore, I strongly doubt a switch to RealID would net any quality gains for a forum like TL; it would seem more likely that it would actually reduce quality by causing many current quality posters to stop posting.

So, if it were implemented here, I'd probably not post and just browse, so long as the site continued to retain its relevance with the SC scenes. If that began to fade as well, I'd probably eventually give it up altogether

Despite how much I like this site and the content it has, if it was forced Real ID I'd take the same approach as Blizzard forums - never visit the site again. For me its quite simply morally apprehensible to force anything on anyone, especially disclosure of personal information. In the event I did decide to continue visiting in this hypothetical situation it would not affect my posts.

Im assuming real ID is when there is some way to authenticate that you are posting as your real name, via facebook or something else. If this happenes and it becomes mandatory, I will stop posting and I think a large majority of people will too. On the internet you are anonymous and you can say and do whatever you want, and if you all the sudden stop beign anonymous, the things you say online can come to haunt you IRL. Imagine companies seraching your post history in TL 5 years after you made the post to learn more about you or people you know searching what you said about abortion years ago.

I don't like the idea.

I used to be completely paranoid. Creating an online identity and keeping it completely seperate from RL (all fake information). Unfortunately over the years of having to buy stuff online, my real info is already out there. Little point trying to hide it.

As for using real name for forums and such, I dont think is too much of a big deal (except for the whole privacy violation). In terms of gaming though I think it could lead to RL griefing if you get that odd psychotic person who you pissed off that happens to live locally. Of course thats the worst case scenario but these days I dont think its beyond the realm of possibility..

Some people like to flame and have forumwars. I wouldn't want to end up in one of those hostile situations about non-important stuff with real name. It sounds more violent to see "Firstname Lastname is retard" than "internet lol nick is an idiot".

if it were real id system it wouldnt matter to me. im not the type of person who BMs if my idol gamer loses. nor if i get BMed by any other player here. and i always say to myself when i encounter such people, "i dont need to stoop down too their level so i dont need to BM..." =p

I wouldnt change, as i trust the community of TL, plus my name can be found on any wgt-related stuff...

The main difference with Blizzard s forum is TL acxtually has good mods....

But it would be a little problem to know who posted what...a nickname is easier to remember than a full name

it makes more sense here and its less of an omg factor, TL is just a fansite for sc / sc2.

I am indifferent and would not change my posting behaviour.

I wonder if it's a serious question.

I wouldn't come anymore. Is the concept of private life losing any meaning nowadays? Why on earth would I want people I know irl to be able to know what I write on a gaming website? I laughed out loud when I learnt that bnet forum would be real id from now on.

I mean, seriously.

Oh, thought "Real ID" was about secondary accounts and all that instead of using actual name. In that case, no. I try very hard to prevent personal information loss through the internet.

Yea, I don't understand this pool. The vast majority of the internet registers to everywhere using fake names and it's technologically impossible to identify people over the internet.

Forcing "real" id's would just mangle people's id choices and wouldn't make anything any more "real".

Personally I've always used my real name as an ID. But others don't and there's no way to confirm either. So it makes no difference.

Either not change behaviour, or stop posting at all.

Seriously, not even Sweds, Germans or Norwegians can pronounce my name correctly.

It wouldnt be good, I enjoy the anymous situation here. And why would you want people with real names anyways... It would create confusion since alot probally has the same name on the forum. If you are too lazy to deal with the people trying their best fucking TL up, I suggest being more rash.

I think making people accountable on the internet is a difficult task, I wonder if we should do it by offending them?

I understand the idea behind it though.

I voted that I wouldn't change my behavior, but now that I think about it, that's not true.

I'm sure most people could go through their own posting history and find at least a few posts and say "Oh wow, definitely wouldn't have posted that under my real name"

My "Real ID", like a lot of people here, would be trivially easy to track down. I assume anyone here who wants to know already does know my actual name. So this wouldn't bother me a bit.

On this forum I wouldn't change at all, since I don't really post anything here that would make me afraid of being held accountable...on other forums though...I'd probably stop posting completely.

Also it's pretty easy to find me with my name. The only guy on the internet with my name is some middle aged French sculptor...

I would use a fake ID obviously, like anyone in their right minds would. However, if I were somehow forced to use my real name by some higher power, I would probably stop posting altogether and just browse TL.net. There are just too many weirdos on this planet.

from what ive gathered my name "brees" would be replaced with my real name...?

if so that would be bad. my lastname is unique, only one with it in the world

But there's no option for "Circumvent the system to use a fake name" which is what I would actually do.

You have a good point. But what if you could use a different name? Anytime someone asks me for my name and I don't know who they are(telemarketers etc...), I tell them my name is Joe Blow from Idaho. lol

Exactly. Plus religious / political view (or you can supress general forum straight away) and anybody can know way too many things about you straight away.

Plus it does happen that a thread turns badly, real ID or not. And maybe people don't want everybody they know to google their name anf find out what they have been saying when they were getting trolled / pissed off etc...

Internet is already killing what remains of our privacy. I will basically never ever, ever, use a real ID forum.

Im new to TL and I really don't want to see my name thrown everywhere on here whenever I post... Probably just browse cuz I still love this place and it's a great community site, just please don't make it real-id... Way too much damage that can be done with that information; too risky.

What I love about Blizzard is how they care for the community, but I was really kind of disappointed to see Blizzard be too scared and timid to actually put it in action. The population that stalks/creeps/harasses people via something like this real id check is sooooo tiny. We have to think of the better good. Keeping the trolls off is a worthy cause for a VERY low risk of being stalked.
