The Highlander
July 14th, 2009 19:17 GMT

The Highlander There Can Be Only One There is a final community cash prize tourney. One more cutthroat, more brutal than any before. The Highlander. This tourney features an invite list of the hottest foreigners with a prelim tourney open to the public. The catch? This tourney has no loser bracket, and will only award one player. That is right: Only One gets the prize. Winner takes all.
The Prelim qualification tourney This weekend Saturday the 18th @ 21 CET we will be hosting the prelim tourney. This tourney is registration based and requires each interested participant to PM either {88}iNcontroL or Plexa on TeamLiquid.net in order to sign up. Once you PM me or Plexa with you ICCUP ID we will give you the channel and confirm your registration. We will then add you randomly to the bracket. Signups close at Friday 23 CET.
The format for the prelim tourney is bo3 through all rounds with the final 4 qualifying for the final tourney. Each round will have a starting map designated at the tourney day with the loser picking a map from our map pool.
The Highlander Tourney Format: 32 man tourney with 28 invites and 4 qualifying from the prelim. As before, each round will have a starting map designated at the tourney day with the loser picking a map from our map pool.
Round of 32 and 16 will be played on the weekend of Saturday the 25th. Final time etc will be posted the week prior. Round of 8 along with semis and finals will be played on the weekend of August 1st. Semi's/finals will be casted with vods uploaded and shared via TL.net.
Rules: Pretty simple, this is a community tourney ran by {88}iNcontroL and aided by TL.net big guns like Plexa and Kennigit. Everything is fairly typical. 1. Any abuse/cheating will be banned / removed asap. 2. This is a chinese free tourney. Sorry. The lag issues is simply too much for me, an amateur organizer to deal with. 3. Disconnects will be a regame unless one player is clearly winning. All cases will be handled by an admin if both players cannot agree. 4. Maps can be played only once per series unless both players agree to replay a map. 5. All replays must be saved and sent to Plexa/Me after each round. Any round without replays is subject to replay/forfeit by player without replays. 6. Allied mines/etc all not allowed.. standard rules. 7. Plexa and I are God.. whatever we say sticks and we reserve the right to make a binding decision on the fly. We have you, the players, best intentions in mind.. please just trust us to run a smooth tourney! (or die trying)
The Invite Players -Mondragon -ESC.Kolll -mTw-Horror -mTw-Infernal -ESC.Dreiven -ToT)Paranoid( -ToT)ret( -ESC.White-rA -ESC.Strelok -RoX.Dimaga -Advokate -Brat_Ok -ToT)Aerials( -ESC.Jianfei -EG.G5 -EG.Machine -EG.Louder -EG.Nyoken -> replaced with Deska -IdrA -Castro]Ex[ -LRM-Fenix -ToT)Squall( -ESC.Dinot -Archon]Ex[ (has decided not to play) TellMewhy]Ex[ gets spot -ToT)Naugrim( -ESC.Mana -ToT)eriador( -> LRM)Octoberzerg gets spot -EG.Lzgamer
Bolded players have confirmed
These players need to PM me or Plexa before Saturday the 25th. If they do not confirm or show we will have backups from either the prelim or this list:
1. osR-Killer 2. Deska 3. Octoberzerg 4. Ptak 5. TellMeWhy]Ex[ 6. SawyerZZZ 7. TOT)Moonshine( 8. ToT)Ace( 9. SL.Goody 10. mTw-Naruto
These backups need to PM me/or Plexa for the prelim tourney to be confirmed.
The map pool for the prelim AND final tourney is: - Destination - God's Garden - Heartbreak Ridge - Colosseum - Neo Forte - Neo Lost Temple - Sin Gaema Gowon
The maps will be the most recent versions from ICCUP. In case you can't work it out still, here is the mappack
This is a community tourney.. ran by me and Plexa. This is not an official Teamliquid tourney... they are helping cause they are amazing but all problems/questions should be directed to ME.
You are probably wondering what the prize is? Well how does: $700 sound? Not bad right?
happy hunting.
Thx to ICCUP as a partner:

Wow pretty neet. Nice opportunity to make an extra buck or two. Are the finals going to be streamed, or are we looking at getting VODs?

Inc will be running it. TL will be live streaming it and helping him where he needs it. We will be streaming from the semis on.

Very good initiative, foreign Starcraft: Brood War might be in its last days - but those are days of glory, and some dollars! GG, and good luck to the players - I'll be enjoying the casts :D

There will be some VODs released from the tournament as well as replays. More of those details to come!

wow this looks really awesome
the prize idea is awesome and I must say I'm surprised you guys managed to muster up so much cash
can't wait for the games, may the best man win!
|
Good luck playing PvZ on Sin Gaema Gowon or Neo Forte XD
|
Perhaps you guys should allow people to donate to the prize pool--just to make this even more outrageous I guess more cash involved = more risk of attempted abuse, but it could make the tournament even better by raising the intensity of competition.
|
haha Neo Forte that maps AWESOME
|
Gj for organising this, seems great
I'm not sure if I can make it on Saturday. Should I still sign up?

what Rank on Iccup to enter XD?

Sounds like an awesome tourney that could stir up some good drama, seeing how 2nd place is as bad as finishing last, at least prize-wise

strange map pool, and i'm actually surprised day9 is only on the backup list but w/e. Thanks for doing this, i hope for some goo VODs

Half of EG invites are there clearly because incontrol is one of the organizers. Not that I care, they'll just get eliminated right away.
|
i hear get.shauni wants a spot, would that be possible
|
You guys should definitely livestream at least the Ro8 games and beyond, even round of 16 if they aren't all played at the same time. I'm sure you can find 4-8 volunteers to obs and stream, and the community would really like to follow their favorites the whole way (at least I would).

I agree, would be awesome.
Btw poor Oystein, not even on backup list :/
|
IdrA should win this pretty easily.
I wonder if his coach lets him play in stuff like this during practice hours, or if he needs to do it in his free time?
EDIT: Where's KwaiiRice or w/e his name is?
|
Pretty long list, hope everything goes smoothly. Who is providing the $500 ansadi dollars? :-O
|
Lol KawaiiRice is decent but he's not of the top caliber like those listed. I also don't think IdrA will win this easily. I mean, he is the favorite if there is one, but Strelok, White_rA, and Mondragon are all capable of taking him down as well as a few others on the list.

Sounds awesome. I can't wait.
I'm looking forward to it regardless but I wish you guys would be a little more ambitious about streaming/commentating. There are quite a few people who have the livestream.com stuff pretty well figured out (I've watched random commentated games on LZ, TOT and Ret's stream before) and it would be cool if there was some unofficial obs commentating going on. Not complete coverage but some picking and choosing would be awesome. The random brackets may mean we get some good matches early: I want to see Ret against Idra streamed even if it's round 1

how many clans is represented in this tour? 4-5? thats way to few.. there is good players in not so good clans too, that could beat many of these guys, and would make this tour far more interesting...

hmmm ... couple of Bignames are missing but still i think that its going to be one helluva tournament GL to all !!!

Thanks inc, I can't wait.

i will win this tourney
|
Gonna be a cool tournament, and if Idra wins i will cry.
|
Idra undefeated? GL to everyone playing... I hope for some truely epic games. I'd play in the prelim' if I didnt think it would be more of a waste of electricity.
I'm betting Idra... but I'm a Zerg at heart and hope someone can pull it out for the swarm. GL HF
|
|
not TOOO important, but DIMAGA is in RoX., not ESC.
|
Ya, I was wondering why there was no such as Arew or Draco or even Yayba, some of them been doing pretty well recently. but ya, Idra might have a strong shot at winning - since he's beat most of the list recently.
But ya, due to maps, luck and opening strategy, he might be taken out pretty soon.
gL
|
|
Thanks for the invite geoff . People fail to realize there are more than 28 top foriegners on the bw scene and that he can't accomidate everyone. GL to everyone.
|
People are going to get left out, deal with it. If they deserve a spot, they'll qualify O_O!
There's also no sense really in inviting someone like Nony (doesnt practice anymore) or Draco (doesn't practice either)... and Idra is obviously the favorite, probably only White-Ra and Ret are capable of beating him right now, everyone else should get stomped pretty easily barring some stroke of luck.
|
Cool looking tour, only the winner is winner IdrA will propably take it, but we'll see.

livestream sucks for rushes.... u can have friend watching and telling if any rush or hidden expo is happening... u can do it like in counter strike where HLTV ( cs equivalent stream ingame) where u can put delay, don´t know if thats possible on livestream or any other stream like 3 minute delay would make it perfectly fair. gl with tour.

I think the first is more grammatically correct. I'm not sure though and by no means and English major. Regardless, they're both used.
Edit: Oh, and looking forward to this. Hopefully Xiaozi tries to qualify.

It doesn't have to do with which is grammatically correct, it has to do with which is the proper quote from the movie.
|
And for the record, the latter is grammatically correct. >.<
Good luck Ret, although getting through the apparent competition will be tough!

There is a delay from what is actually going on and what is being shown on teh stream, its not long 10 seconds i think so i guess that can work, I dont think any of these players would cheat like that seeing as how MOST of them are GM and nice people. Also i think you can change the delay, so make it 30 seconds or a minute idk if you can thats just what i heard.

But seriously, that rule needs to be clarified, lest someone takes it the way I showed above.
In any case, this is a preety good tourtnament. Lots of interesting names. This also represents a chance for good players who are not established progamers to prove themselves. I seriously hope a replay pack will be available.

I'm pretty sure that if you are living outside china, you can play. And simply what happens when a korean B-team pro or some good pro comes from prelims and stomps everyone, that could happen too.

before I even get into the "rules" I state that this is a fairly straightforward and common tourney as far as rules go.
We have been doing this for 11 years guys.. lets at least pretend we have a general understanding of what is expected as far as rules go from tourneys.
The chinese have been excluded.. it sucks but not as much as dealing with articles about why a player should advance despite the terrible lag.

People are more likely to misunderstand the rule I point out, especially considering some people often tend to show animosity towards the Chinese. On the other hand, nobody hates people who chop wood.

almost all of the invitational players have accept the invitation already, pretty sick.
EDIT: almost forgot, about the match format, how is the opponent being choose? like, for example, if Plexa feel like it, he would put me in the first match against Idra. Does it work like that?

theres a ton of mid level players who arent going to accomplish anything and theres no objective way to pick which ones deserve it more, inc is putting up the 500$ so he gets to pick his friends over your friends. if you want to snub eg and let shauni lose first round in a tournament you can go ahead and host one yourself.

That's not entirely accurate, because the money wasn't provided by Inc but rather by a donor who donated it to TeamLiquid to use for this tournament. I don't think donating the money means you get to pick exactly who you want either (unless its somehow made clear at the outset), but that's another issue.

the guy who was gonna give money to inc until he told him to put it towards a tournament instead?
hes responsible for the money going into the tournament

hes responsible for the money going into the tournament You'll have to talk to Kennigit and Inc to get the exact details.
Regardless, the $500 is to be used for the tournament.

This is a chinese free tourney. Sorry. The lag issues is simply too much for me, an amateur organizer to deal with. So that means that Chinese from People`s Republic of China, Republic of China (Taiwan), Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, United States, Canada, Vietnam etc. are all excluded from the tournament? Gee, must be tough when your nationality determines whether or not you have lag issues. But seriously, that rule needs to be clarified, lest someone takes it the way I showed above. In any case, this is a preety good tourtnament. Lots of interesting names. This also represents a chance for good players who are not established progamers to prove themselves. I seriously hope a replay pack will be available. We should clarify the "no hacking" rule too, because people could get it confused with physically going outside and chopping firewood. This is such a classic stereotype invitation Tournament. ESC TOT blablabalbalbala. I dont really care if shauni is not in the list or not.He is so hard to deal with but i bet he can win at least 40% of this players.
|
There are plenty of decent foreigners (some better than the ones on the list) that didn't get an invite. Shauni is good enough to pass the prelims, so why does it matter if he isn't invited? I don't think playing a few extra games is going to ruin his day, even if some "less deserving" people were invited. As Unk. would say, why not?

I love how when anyone does anything nice for the community like half the people just bitch about it, and pick on whats wrong with it. Be thankful anyone doing anything like this anyway, and leting us watch it. They could by all rights just have a tourny like this, and never let the general BW community see any of the game. They still have fun. WTF do they care if we watch them? Remember its us who enjoy watching them play not the other way around.
