Thanks Pachi! Enjoy Hong Kong!

The first round of the OSL kicked off last week and brought some interesting games with it. One player from each of the two groups has advanced, and will join the seeds Stork, Fantasy, GGPlay and Best in the second round of the OSL. For now, let’s briefly recap the events of last week and preview what is in store for us this time around.

OSL R1 Group A

(T)Leta vs (P)BestGod

Game 1
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Game Comments] +
On maps where your natural is difficult to take, Terran players have generally opted to play 2fac builds. Leta decided that this was a nice trend to continue and open 2fac. Leta used his units to full advantage and take his natural fairly quickly and then follow that up with a nice macro game. BestGod played alright, but I’m really getting sick of this Shuttle-DT play. Eventually Leta pushed out with a decent sized army and just ran all over BestGod; a dominating performance from one of the best Terrans around.

Game 2
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Game Comments] +
This wasn’t Leta vs Bestgod, this was Leta vs Medusa. Medusa is incredibly Protoss favoured; check the stats if you don’t believe me. Leta opened with a dropship build and BestGod with DT drop again. Both players played a really unorthodox drop game from here trying to jostle for the advantage. In the end the advantage settled with BestGod and Leta was forced to play economic-catch up. BestGod just rode the imbalance advantage from here on by teching up and getting arbs and proceeded to macro/recall Leta into oblivion.

Game 3
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Game Comments] +
This game was justice for the loss on Medusa. Leta simply opened 2fac against BestGod’s lame DT-Drop play and completely destroyed him. Leta set up camp just outside BestGod’s natural and slowly pushed in and won with little difficulty – a tribute to how much better Leta really was in this series, and how many times the imbalance on Medusa amplified BestGod’s ability.

(T)Leta vs (T)Sea

Game 1
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Game Comments] +
This was a high level TvT, and the map made it that much more interesting. Leta opened up 2fac while Sea opened fac/port but the game progressed well into the midgame and had some really nice TvT action. In the end, Leta was able to claw his way to an advantage which he rode to victory over Sea

Game 2
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Game Comments] +
This game showed the difference between Sea and Leta right now. Leta was always able to gain position over Sea and on Medusa, having the best position is imperative. In addition to that, he played a near perfect game whereas Sea made a number of mistakes including sloppy unit control/decisions which lost a lot of ground. In the end, Leta left Sea thoroughly outclassed and won the series 2-0.

+ Show Spoiler [Result] +
Leta advances to the OSL Round 2!
Leta 2-1 BestGod
Leta 2-0 Sea

OSL R1 Group B

(P)Kal vs (T)Miracle

Game 1
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6gdGZeSdCk
+ Show Spoiler [Game comments] +
Very impressive game from Miracle, seeing as he is still only a fresh face on the scene. Nevertheless there were some glaring mistakes in his play. Notably his decision to take his third very very late, and then taking the central expansion instead of one of the expansions around the edge with gas. Miracle’s unit ratio was also way off, and that cost him the first major battle in the game. Miracle had made far too many tanks, and didn’t have enough vultures to defend from Zealots – and Kal had reacted to this by creating a lot of Zealots which allowed him to bust the push relatively easily. Miracle applied some really strong pressure against Kal, and Kal looked a little stretched to defend at times, but Kal came through and demonstrated that he is worthy of being one of the Dragons and claimed victory.

Game 2
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usYTIQNjr7I
+ Show Spoiler [Game Comments] +
Rape, pure rape. Kal exploited Miracles inexperience and played a nice pressure build which forced a number of micro errors on Miracles part. Once Kal had killed off most of the marines in Miracle’s army there was nothing Miracle could do to prevent the game from slipping out of control. Way to easy for Kal.

(P)Kal vs (Z)Thezerg

Game 1
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIyP7XlSvlc
+ Show Spoiler [Game Comments] +
Let’s face it, Thezerg hasn’t looked very impressive since he’s moved to SKT. With Kal on fire, and a renowned PvZ master, this was always going to be difficult for Thezerg to win. Despite all of Kal’s experience in this matchup, he opted against the standard openings like FE, 2gate or 1gate Sair/DT and instead opened with a fake stargate into 3 Gate citadel. This ancient PvZ hasn’t been used in years and is really devastating when the Zerg isn’t prepared for it. Thezerg was nowhere near ready for 3 Gate, and was appropriately steamrolled. With that said, the fact that Kal chose to play an unorthodox build tells me that he has big problems with PvZ on this map; my guess is that Zerg are going to be strong here vs Protoss after all.

Game 2
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JMlbBr0A7Q
+ Show Spoiler [Game Comments] +
This was a fairly good encounter between the two; and showcased pretty good anti-sair/reaver play from Thezerg (which included building a Queen; +1 bonus point for that). Ultimately, it was Thezerg’s decision to expand to 7 as his third base which ended up costing him the game. The base is harder to defend because the Zerg needs to have map control to defend it properly; and that’s really difficult against a midgame Protoss. Once Kal was able to isolate the expansion and get off some really serious damage there Thezerg just fell apart. The fact that Kal killed about 8 Overlords in one raid right at the end of the game was just icing on the cake. Kal advances 4-0; an impressive night of BW from Kal.

+ Show Spoiler [Result] +
Kal advances to the OSL Round 2
Kal 2-0 Miracle
Kal 2-0 Thezerg

OSL R1 Group C

Set 1: (T)go.go vs (Z)FireFist
Set 2: (P)BackHo vs Winner

This has to be the worst group in the entire Ro36. First up we have a mediocre Terran, against a mediocre Zerg. Then the winner gets to fight the one Protoss in the scene with no sense of timing or sense at all. If this group had been played last year, there would have been no doubt that go.go would have aced this group easily, however, I'm no convinced he's got what it takes to make Starleagues anymore. Firefist on the other hand, has been showcasing some better than average games and his form is looking pretty sharp. While Zerg are having a pretty tough time against Terran at the moment, I still think that Firefist has it in him to take down go.go. In my opinion, Firefist 2-0 go.go

Backho is such an unpredictable player because he plays really really dumb. Against either opponent, on paper, he is the heavyweight and the favorite to take the group. But it's really difficult to judge who's the more skilled right now between the three due to the limited proleauge time they've seen lately. Medusa is such a Protoss haven though, and for that reason Backho should be happy to go to Game 2 knowing that he will win. Thus that means go.go would need to win on Tears of the Moon and RoTK; which isn't absurd given the demand for creativity on Tears. And Firefist will have to do the same, which is probably asking a little bit more. He should take Tears, but Backho will probably win the next two and take the group. In my opinion, Backho 2-1 Firefist or go.go 2-1 Backho.

OSL R1 Group D

Set 1: (T)UpMagiC vs (Z)Shine[Kal]
Set 2: (P)Much vs Winner

Unlike Group C, this is something to get excited about!! UpMagic is the heavy favorite to destroy Shine and the big question on my mind is, how is he going to do it. Tears of the Moon demands for creative and inspired play; and if that doesn't describe UpMagic then what does? This map is tailored to him and I expect to see some really cool cutesy all-in strategy which Shine just won't be ready for. Medusa should see Mech play from UpMagic and I have enormous faith that Shine just won't be able to cope under the pressure. UpMagic should win this 2-0 with ease.

Now here comes the game of the night; UpMagic vs Much. Much used to be known for his amazing abillity to stop rushes - notably in PvZ with some epic probe defense. While UpMagic is known for his many cheeses. We have the cheese master vs the anti-cheese; and that makes for an exciting game. Sure these are two heavyweights who are out of shape at the moment, but I expect their skill levels to be almost the same because of it. And what does that mean? It means that this is going to be an epic match and if Shine somehow wins ill be bitterly disappointed. I think Much will take this 2-0 or lose 1-2; there's no way he's going to lose on Medusa which means that Up must win the first game to have a shot. If Up can do that, then the series is his.

And that's all for this week. Don't forget to get involved in the TL Christmas Celebrations next week; you can start right now by signing up for the 2v2 tournament! The OSL will continue to play on through the holiday, so rest assured you will not be deprived of Brood War these holidays. And don't forget to tune in on Wednesday and Friday at 18:30 KST on OGN to watch the OSL in all it's glory.

I hope Shine becomes a super zerg and 4-0s his group, just so we have another zerg in.

Thank you for the write up.

I hope that Much does stop UpMagiC - otherwise I think that would be the end all CJ presence in this Tournament. That - I think that Much deserves to win, because overall I think he is the superior player.

4-0'ing on a group looks like it's really hard.

Nice job Leta and Kal.

Nice writeup Plexa.

This is a really nice newspost, the only thing I would change is that the fact that there are only two game links for some of the matches gives away that it was 2-0 and therefore the winner of the first game won the match. With all the welcome effort you've into not spoiling the results for people, there should be a dummy third spoiler like the uploaders in the small vod thread do.

Nice writeup.
Actually the worst group is Tester, Hyun & Midas imo.
Rooting for the big names and an exciting OSL!
