[GSL] EG.IdrA - Code S Ro16 Foreigner Special
January 15th, 2011 06:27 GMT
GSL Code S Ro16 Foreigner Special: EG.IdrABy TrueRedemption
7 EGIdra vs TLSClide 1 @ Xel’Naga Caverns:+ Show Spoiler +Idra opened pool first, in contrast to his game against Ensnare. Clide went 2 rax, but with a limited ability to pressure he quickly started an expansion and began a factory. Idra having scouted the initial marines reacted with additional zerglings, preventing Clide’s expansion from mining until he moved out with 4 hellions. Using just speedlings, a couple of well placed spinecrawlers and his queen, Idra deflected the initial hellion harass, but Clide kept his hellions alive, setting up a frightening hellion marauder marine push. Incredible control and patience by Idra allowed his spire and initial mutalisks to finish just as the push reached his natural, Clide’s 7 were marines not enough to take down the mutas, and Idra’s strong control limited any damage the marauders and hellions could do before being cleaned up. Just a little too slow, this timing push had a distinct inability to shoot up. Immediately counter attacking, the mutas were met with limited anti air. As reinforcing mutas joined the front, Idra was able to take down barracks and any marines he could find. This is a really, really bad sign when you're terran. Clide was desperately building turrets marines and replacing rax, but Idra’s great muta control and incredible macro was simply overwhelming, easily getting a third expansion and 40 food lead. Despite the +1 turret range upgrade and the sheer number of turrets Clide frantically made, Idra's mutas found hole after hole in the defense. After finally stabilizing as Idra set up his gold 4th, Clide desperately moved out in attempt to take his own gold, but the muta ling baneling army was far too big. Having completely dismantled Clide, all that stood between Idra and a guaranteed spot in the Ro8 was NSPGenius. Clide probably regretting calling out the Gracken.
1 EGIdra vs NSPGenius 7 @ Xel’Naga Caverns:+ Show Spoiler +Genius placed his first pylon down the ramp, indicating forge first play against Idra’s hatch first. Genius was able to force a cancel of the hatch however, walling his probe in with 3 pylons behind the minerals quickly adding a couple cannons. 600 minerals spent to cancel a 300 mineral hatchery, without an expansion nexus of his own yet. The hatch and one of the cannons canceled, Idra quickly expanded to the 3 o’clock position, Genius getting up his own natural and gateway. With only one cannon, Idra’s roach army was more than a match for the protoss defense, Genius desperately warping in new cannons and a brave stalker. Not nearly enough to defend an expansion 7 minutes in. After taking out a couple cannons, a gateway, the nexus and the cyber core Idra pulled back relying on a strong 2 base economy. Attempting to retake his natural, Genius moved out with a small stalker sentry force, but with a speedling roach army and a creep highway connecting the distant bases, Idra would not be denied from this strong of a spot. Genius' desperate attempt to catch up only made things worse. As roach speed finished, Idra crashed through Genius’ natural, the first few hydras rallying to the front before Genius’s first void rays could clean up the roaches, and a thoroughly crushed Genius could only type out. Didn't take a genius to see that this game was over.
3 EGIdra vs oGsNada 6 @ Lost Temple:+ Show Spoiler +Idra opened hatch first, but Nada’s 1 rax play managed to snipe a drone before retreating, going for a fast thor drop play. The first thor was unable to do much damage however, Idra immediately surrounding it with lings and making sure not to lose a queen. This seemed a little stronger way back in April... This was only the start however, Nada quickly repaired the thor and pushed out with some SCVs, marines, 2 thors and 2 medivacs. Idra was quite prepared, his banelings able to make quick work of the SCVs and most of the marines. The zerglings able to overwhelm the rest, Nada was forced to pick up the thors and retreat yet again, now significantly behind in worker count. A close-up of the carnage as Idra pulled ahead. Nada was committed though, again repairing the thors and moving out, this time 4 thors and a few marines. Idra had begun roach production however, and once again repelled the attack with ease, this time killing two of the thors. If at first you don't succeed... Still on one base Nada was now desperate to do some damage, attacking with one last marine thor push, but Idra cleaned it up with ease in a dominating 3-0 performance , securing a top seed for the Ro8. Try, try again, and finally GG out after looking like a 1 basing noob.
Here is GOM's post game interview transcribed, all rights and credit to GOMtv, Artosis, and the questions asked on their forum. To watch the full, unedited interview, head over to the official GSL website. Hey everyone I am Artosis! And along beside me EGIdra who just won the group of NSPGenius, Clide, and Nada, Wow you are so good. Alright we have some questions from the GOMtv.net forums, John isn’t here because Idra speaks English and so do I, goodbye John. Alright from TieMyShoe: What does it feel like to finally reach the Ro8 and do you think you can win this GSL?
It's awesome to make the Ro8, this is such a bizzare tournament because I thought I would have trouble maintaining Code S. I haven’t been playing very well, I don’t like the state of Zerg, and I keep going in to every round thinking I will lose and then it works out. So no I don’t think I can win, but that hasn’t stopped me so far.
Wow that’s actually really interesting, maybe you should always think you’re going to lose.
Yeah maybe.
From Newbert: How does it feel to beat TSLClide who rivals the love of Tasteless and I for you?
Yeah I was really jealous going into the match I had to earn your love and all that. Nah it's just another match he’s a good terran but hes not the best, so it's not huge.
From DarkOmen: How do you feel about Artosis betraying the Zerg and race switching? What kind of question is that when you just won the Group.
Uh I dunno you’re a lot smarter than me so I guess I’m jealous of you.
That’s how smart he is, he knows I’m smarter than him, now that is… that’s impressive. Well that was so quick because we didn’t have to translate so let’s ask you a few more questions. Obviously you didn’t expect to win the group but how do you feel about actually beating Nada? Is this a good thing or a bad thing because of whats going to happen tomorrow?
It was a weird game. If it had happened before the last patch it would have been a lot better but with the thing with the auto targeting it becomes a lot less strong, and the banelings took out the SCVs anyway, it felt like a throw away game and I don’t feel much about winning it.
Well what do you think about the person, you’re going to play whoever gets second in tomorrow’s group, Who do you hope that to be and who do you think it’ll be?
I hope it's not MC, I can’t beat a good Protoss right now, and the Terrans, on these maps, I’d be very happy playing any of the Terrans there. So I really hope its not MC, I get the feeling it will be.
Alright well I guess that’s it. You have anything to say? Anyone to thank? All that good stuff.
Thank you to Slog4pg, all my friends and family for supporting me, also to Team EG and all our sponsors, Intel and Steelseries they make everything possible so a huge thanks to them.
Alright, thank you so much Greg and good luck trying to win the GSL.
Next: TLAF-Liquid`Jinro Round of 16!
With one foreigner already through to the Ro8 and looking super strong, be sure to tune in tonight as our own Swedish Superhero Liquid'Jinro battles through group D! What better way to get pumped for the second TSL3 qualifier? And be certain to not to miss EGIdra's Ro8 match against the second seed from tonight's group, scheduled for next Tuesday January 18th!

Great write up. "Try, try again, and finally GG out after looking like a 1 basing noob."
made me laugh
Congrats to Idra, a very very impressive RO16 performance.
Grats to idra, i was out last night so i missed the games, i wish i saw them. Zerg gogogogogo =] !!!
Yay i missed all these games and cant access vods on this connection, great write up thanks.
I stayed up soo late to watch those games.
I was not disappointed. You fucking own IdraA!
That first game versus Clide he absolutely dismantled the kid with those mutas, very Brood War-esque. The other games werent as impressive though
amazing as always. Glad to see IdrA doing well in gsl. 1 question, if Jinro is 2nd in his group, that means he will face IdrA? or the first place of Group D faces IdrA?
Fear the Leather Gracket!
I didn't get it at first glance...then
:D
IdrA dominated all 3 games. He's finally made a proper breakthrough in GSL.
Never in my life expected to read this. I think it cured my fever!
Great write up, my jaw dropped several times watching these games. I thought Idra would have his work cut out for him moving out of this group, but he made it look easy. I was particularly impressed that he responded so well to unusual one-base pushes and early game shenanigans, which has historically been a weakness... Idra is definitely a stronger player in this GSL than any previous one.
You mispelt TSLClide in the first spoiler :D
Brilliant Writeup nonetheless
Thanks for the write up.
I am so happy Idra won. He may garner alot of hate for his BM, but I really love seeing foreigners getting far. I think it will do alot for the future of e-sports outside of Korea.
FML, wrong shit is wrong. Ignore and move on folks.
Hope IdrA and Jinro get to play it off in the finals. Teach the koreans a lesson or two about trying to snipe foreigners.
haha NICE Idra!!!gogogogo
love idra, hope he doesn't face MC. Idra wins this tournamen for sure^^
And the moral of the story is that humble Idra > cocky Idra. Yeah, cauz when you actually think you could (or will) loose, you have way less stress and can play to your full potential ?
I've always thought being too confident about yourself only leads to meaningless failure.
IdrA fighting! It was awesome watching him own up his group. I really hope he continues to move on in the GSL. I want to know what happens when a foreigner gets into the finals of GSL. Will they interview their mother ?
IdrA looks so hot without the glasses =)
Loving the new look, and the new reinvented humble IdrA and his playstyle, keep rolling everyone!!
<3
IdrA you are my heroooo, you better win this GSL.
I too am at a loss for how to beat Protoss, but I'm not facing MC so =x. gl !

That is not the case here. What I actually admire in IdrA is how, no matter what he thinks the odds are he maintains one thing always - focus on facts. He played the best he could regardless of the outcome, as if his only goal is to respond to what is going on in the game, not to think "oh no, I'm going to lose" or "alright, I'm going to win", but just evaluating the game at any moment and focusing on the GAME. I think a lot of people in his place would freak out over the option of losing code S and start sucking. He didn't because, as usual, he focuses on the facts.
This is what people call him BM for (telling the facts as he sees them), but his fact-focus is what, IMO, played a big role in his psychological ability to take these games when many others would have failed.
So, I doubt he was sitting there through the game thinking "oh I'm going to lose anyway" but instead he was only thinking of what was going on in the game. That is a great psychological achievement that requires readiness to accept facts as they are and respond to them. I thought it was awesome.

That's just the thing - I don't think he is humble, I don't think he is any different than usual. He is just a truthful person - when he thinks he is good he says so, when he thinks he's playing badly, he says so too.
For whatever reason, people have a hard time recognizing an honest person when they see one - they think the person is either BM cocky or humble.
Thanks for the write up, was so sad that i missed that but now I'm a bit happier, but sad again cause i didn't know that Jinro was playing at a different time to usual. I'd even talked my wife into watching his games with me
But i think i will feel happier when i read the same writeup about his games. I don't even know what happened yet
He's defending against cheese better than ever before. Nada and NexGenius were pretty disappointing though.
yea i really enjoyed this series where idra's decisions were spot on
but + Show Spoiler +idra vs jinro makes me sad. i would rather they meet later in the competition

He is always saying "I'm gonna win", hell he even said in an interview with Incontrol that he will finally give the GSL a winner that deserve the #1 spot... And it was for GSL 3. And now you have Idra saying "i was sure i was gonna loose"... and he played damn well. So please, look at reality, Idra is better when he don't view himself as the absolute winner, and actually play the game without theorycrafting on why he is better than his opponent. *
How can you say that saying "I'm gonna give GSL a winner it deserve" when you only reach RO16 is "fact focus" ? You blow my mind.

best part of the interview, i lol-ed
Man i love watching Idra play just a beast man mai fav zerg by far.
Man. IdrA with lenses and black leather jacket?? BADASS!
It's idra vs jinro time again!...
Congratulations Mr. EG.IdrA, nothing but respect for this accomplishment.
Great write up, love reading these each time they appear. Thanks a lot!
I was actually entirely surprised when Artosis asked my question. I just threw it in there for laughs since they kept going on about their love, etc. I never suspected it would be picked, and I was reading my book listening to the interview with my feet up on my desk and nearly fell backwards off my chair when he said my name.
Love the GSL, and the nerd humor. Good stuff.
And it's Noobert. =P
IdrA vs jinro rematch for best foreigner title :D
That's some awsome news
lol, thanks for writing that up, and also doing the interview. I thoroughly enjoyed the gracket image!
Man, IdrA is just such a damn beast. I loved watching him play. Some of the most solid zerg I've ever seen. Many people think he's bad mannered, and there might be some truth to that, but he tells it how it is, and is still humble and mannered in person. Overall a superb effort from IdrA, and I hope he will win the GSL and show the Koreans AND the foreigners, that we are just as good as the Koreans.

Well, he tells it like it is, unless he's laddering, then he tells it like a bit of an ass. But he's still a great player.
I really enjoyed that interview hehe.
Fear the leather Gracket FTW
Congratz Idra on making it this far and good luck in the future. I feel silly asking this but who is Slog4pg2?
GO IDRA... show those cheesin' 'reans whos BOSS.
Greg ftw, he looks pretty bad ass with the leather jacket.
Thanks a lot for the article. Couldn't see those matches so it's really interesting and usefull.
Idra breakthrough finally. Did slog help him train? Does slog still play???? O_O
good job idra, good luck in the next round. i'm yet to see a single game of this gsl, but i hope the "foreigners" do very well in this tournament
wow Idra 3 - 0ing this is definately not what i expected to happen in this group
congratulation on the ownage, mr fields!
Great write up ! Go IdrA !

Greg Fields Fighting! woooohoooo! Get'em Greggy!
Gotta love the Terminator 2 leather look. They should animate IdrA time traveling into the studio in a ball of energy from the future and say "I'm looking for David Kim, do you know where i can find this man?"
3-0... I thought my eyes were screwed up at first. And wtf was Nada doing in that game... Well i'm just blown away by this group.

He thought he was going to succeed in earlier GSLs, so he was confident. Right now, he feels extremely on edge due to his practice games against Protoss and is obviously very dubious about his chances.
:D :D :D Thought it was impossible but my intense love of idrA has grown even further!! Love you Gracken1!!11!!1
Idra is slowly becoming less and less like an uber nerd. If you look at beta Idra and now its a huge differnce. I also loved him on Day 9 last week, he completely told the korean's to shove it.

Where could i watch these?

LEATHER GRACKET
It's games like these that make me proud to be an IdrA fan. You are a beautiful human being, IdrA.
Leather jacket.. Computer games on motorcycles?
Watching these games was so exciting. I like how he didn't even think he'd win!
Sick games, was on the edge of my seat.
Why did you take off your jacket in the last game, but had it on for the other games? o.O
i actually think idrA or Jinro will win codeS! they both dominated their group
I have the same jacket as IdrA,just a little bigger.
Now we can use the multiple pictures of Greg smiling to troll him on TL, hehehe.
Great work though Greg, much deserved and bets of luck! Great entertainment that's for sure, what a group.
hes much more likeable when hes speaking into a mic rather than typing on a keyboard, hope he continues to improve his manner, such a good z player - gl vs jinro
good read
i loved watching all of idras game, it was awesome seeing him go 3-0, especially him dominating clide!
Idra vs. Nada on... Lost Temple? LT certainly has changed since the last time I played it.
Very impressive. IdrA had better win.....and nice leather gracket! Damn....
Nice report. Congrats to Idra.

Yeah would love to see / hear that too.

Lol... Lets start submitting questions about artosis to GOM... "NaDa, just having defeated MarineKing, how do you feel about Artosis' oddly thorough knolwedge of guniea pigs?"
Well done Idra! I agree with the comments about Idra's focus and composure. I would NOT be able to play my A game against NaDa or BoxeR...
And finally... I love Idra's face in the pic above... lol.

thats not the 6gv2 keyboard!
