Tournament Roundup #1

Welcome to this weeks Tournament recap. Being the first instalment of this weekly series, we have a lot of tournaments to recap! Right from the end of the Beta in fact! So if you feel like the there are too many tournaments for you to keep up with them all, then this is the news post that should help you get a grips with what is going on!

Each week we will bring you a link-heavy thread summarising the results from the minor tournaments from the past week - linking replays [image loading], vods [image loading], Liquipedia articles [image loading] and threads [image loading] where possible. This should be the only stop necessary to get a glimpse at how the competitive scene is shaping up! Note that this post won't be covering the results from the major tournaments, those will be covered by separate news posts.

Tournaments

Razer King of the Beta Tournament (7/18 - 7/27). IdrA proved that he is indisputably the King of the Beta, and perhaps the entire SC2 scene, defeating his Korean nemesis Tester 3-2 in a nail-biting and impressive series after stomping Qxc 3-0 in the semis, scoffing in the face of ZvT imbalance. Qxc and IntoTheRainbow took 3rd and 4th.
[image loading][image loading][image loading]

Inferno Online SC2 Cup #1 (7/31). This enormous Swedish LAN showed that Terran rules the Nordic lands, as all four semifinalists represented the Pride of War. Ultimately, though, it was SjoW who took home the gold, beating out MorroW 3-1, as our very own Liquid`Jinro and meRz settled for 3rd and 4th after some very exciting series of TvTs.
[image loading][image loading][image loading][image loading]

Open Wolf Cup #3 (8/1). Our favorite teenage otaku from FnaticMSI, Kawaiirice, had one hell of a run, beating out big names such as MoMaN, Zelniq, nEAnS, and HuK to reach the finals where he stomped the Protoss Sinatra 3-0 to take the gold.
[image loading][image loading][image loading]

IEM America Cup #1 (8/1) Yes, this is where all the drama started, with Silver spurring his impressive run with a 2-0 smackdown of IdrA, adding more fuel to the raging ZvT imbalance flames. After edging out Qxc 2-1, he met HuK on the other side of the bracket (who beat Drewbie and Thisisjimmy) and won 3-2 in an intense series to become our first IEM champ.
[image loading][image loading][image loading]

Root vs EG Clan War (8/3). Root again proved that they are North America's team to beat, trouncing USA's other best team 4-1 in a series of impressive matches. The overall score was 8-4.
[url blocked][image loading][image loading]

PN North American Open (8/7). HuK beat TL veteran Zelniq 3-1 after stomping me (Saracen) silly 2-0 in the semis, with Zelniq easily cruising through a series of ZvZs and beating out another TL Zerg Dhalism to secure his spot in the finals.

LSGamers Weekend Open (8/7) It's yet another Team Root finals (if you aren't familiar with these yet, check out some of the previous GosuCoaching Tourneys), and the Terran came out on top, with CauthonLuck beating Sheth 3-1 after Sheth took down HuK in the semis, while CauthonLuck defeated LagLovah.
[url blocked][image loading]

Starcraft 2 Team League (8/7). Following a Team Root disqualification, FnaticMSI easily swept this team tournament, with TTOne impressively all-killing Team EG in the finals.

L^3 Vancouver LAN (8/7). The heavy favorite Drewbie takes home the gold, though ITC winner stalife took the TvT series to an exciting game 5 (3-2). ViralRush takes 3rd place.

Open Wolf Cup #4 (8/8). The Protoss Capoch had an impressive run, beating out Antimage and even the Swedish terror MorroW for the right to challenge HuK in the finals. HuK won decisively 3-1.
[image loading][image loading][image loading]

SC2tourneys.com 8/8 Tournament (8/8). Though this tournament was incredibly promising, featuring big names such as MorroW, CatZ, and CauthonLuck, a slew of no-shows and player cuts reduced the biggest names in the player pool to Antimage and Silver, who stood a head above the rest and easily cruised to the finals, where Silver took the gold.
[image loading][image loading]

IEM American Qualifiers #2 (8/8) The second of four qualifiers for IEM was not without it's fair share of drama. Nevertheless, four more players were added to the list of qualified players: Drewbie, Fenix, Artosis and KiWiKaKi all have reserved their seat for the upcoming tournament. [image loading][image loading]

Icarus Cup (8/12): The ascendant Morrow took home the prize in this 16-player tournament, beating Huk and CauthonLuck along the way. [image loading]

GosuCup Qualifiers (8/14, 8/15): Socke, Huk, HayprO and Ajtls (aka LastShadow) beat out hundreds to become the first four to qualify for the final stage of the GosuCup. Huk ended up taking 1st place with a soft win over Socke while Ajtls bested Haypro in the third/fourth match.
[image loading][image loading]

IEM American Qualifiers #3 (8/15): Heavy on drama, in-game and out. With a limited number of qualifiers remaining, everyone was out to finish strongly in this tournament. Despite all the drama, we did manage to get a top 4 out of this tournament: Ajtls, TT1, Murder and IdrA will be joining the other 8 already qualified gamers for the finals.
[image loading][image loading]

ITL Grand Prix (8/15): Huk continued to post impressive results with a convincing win over a field of 15, including a stifling 3-1 victory over Machine in the finals.
[image loading][image loading][image loading]

SC2CL (8/16): The clan league's field has narrowed from 64 down to 4. TLAF-Liqud, FnaticMSI and Root all lost in the round of 8. Germans ESC, mousesports, Tera-gaming as well as the Polish AFM remain.
[image loading][image loading]

Sith Lords Tournament (8/16): FnaticMSIFenix took down a field of 50 to claim the prize in this high diamond tournament. He defeated Perplexity in the final, and atjls in the semifinals to claim the first place prize.

SLush vs LzGamer @ Metalopolis (Game 3 of the Root vs EG Clan War)
Summary: + Show Spoiler +
SLush bounces back from terribly damaging hellion harass to overcome a fifty supply deficit and take the game. Be on the look out for great fungal growths and Planetary Fortress snipes. It's probably the greatest (and only) ZvT comeback you'll see for a long time. On another note, both players don't like making workers.

As always you can find out what tournaments are coming up in the next week by using the TeamLiquid Tournament Tracker. There are a few tournaments worth singling out for attention, though. The IEM American Qualifiers finish up on Sunday and four final players will be added to the pool. As is traditional with American tournaments, and as has been true so far, expect more drama to unfold especially since this is everyone's last chance to get in! Definitely keep an eye out for this one this week.

The GosuCup qualifiers also continue this week, unfortunately watching this tournament is a bit of a pain. However if the first qualifier is anything to go by, at least you will be able to watch the top 4 battle it out and be able to get those replays when the games are done. Of course there are the standard weekly tournaments as well - Go4SC2, Zotac, Craftcup and GosuCoaching. All four are excellent sources of entertainment be it from live casts or replays once the tournaments are done. It's worth keeping in mind, though, that this week there is IEM so many players won't be turning up the weeklies this week, nevertheless it will be interesting to see who takes them out!

If you are a tournament organiser and want to know how you can cooperate with TeamLiquid to promote your tournament, get into this weekly report and any queries in general - please contact Plexa who is in charge of TL's SC2 content. TL is always happy to help out grass roots tournaments and those who genuinely care about the community - so please contact Plexa to see what we can work out for you!

Until next week!

What a great post! Thanks for this.

SLush vs LzGaMeR was such an awesome, AWESOME round of games.

Is HuK currently the player with the most tournament appearances and wins so far in StarCraft 2's short life?

It's ideas like this that keep me coming back to the site. It can be overwhelming at times being a noobie in the SC2 community, trying to navigate through different websites, threads, youtube channels and whatnot in order to keep up with everything interesting and informative going on in the world with this game. This is PERFECT, with the vod's, replays, and everything all right here for me. THANKS!

hey so unless im mistaken it was actually Bubba who qualified not Idra. There was an issue with someone reporting a game wrong and things had to be replayed. But idra couldnt replay because he was on a plane to plan in the group stage of the euro grand masters. So bubba got a walk in to the final 4. May want to change that...

unless im wrong

IEM press release said Idra gets the spot but bubba gets to play for the chance to win the cash prize money.

Thanks, I was worried at first, but then I realized team root would never stoop to cheating and it must have been some mundane reason like a no show.

Yea, it is possible a clarification can be added. The ROOT guys were disqualified because they didn't send in their contact information on time. They're still a bunch of cool people and don't want anyone thinking they were up to anything malicious. (I ran the tournament that week) Otherwise, nice post. Nice to see who did well each week in one place.

So since this covered a lot more than one week, I have to ask just to make sure but we are getting this every single week now right? That would be so amazing if we did, overviews and reminders are just perfect

Thank you very much for this write-up! It's such a whirlwind to keep track of all of these mini and weekly tournaments that are going on, but this weekly thread is a saving grace. I liked how concise everything was, and how there were very simple links to all of the replays, VODs, and threads involved. What a great recap! The only thing that I think could be improved (and this is really nit-picky, so feel free to dismiss my criticism) would be to expound on some of the weirder stuff such as disqualifications and drama, perhaps in a spoiler so as not clog of the wonderful concision of the rest of the write-up. Thanks a lot though, for helping out this community again and again, and as always, great work - I'll be looking forward to next week's article!

Green Forest LAN wasn't an important tournament or anything......
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them you're a mile away and you have their shoes. Playing Protoss is like driving automatic, playing Terran is like driving stick.
