Mission Successful

Departing after midnight and traveling under the cover of darkness, RtaniSoul, sicklucker, Silverika and Vivax left Montlouis-sur-Loire and headed southeast, making their way stealthily through woods, fields and vineyards. They snuck across the railroad tracks and crossed into Azay-sur-Cher, where they concealed themselves near the banks of the Cher, across the river from the hamlet itself. There, safely away from any roads and populated areas patrolled by the Germans, they hid and rested until just before daybreak.

At first light, the team decamped and headed back north to the railroad tracks. The selected target location, west of the hamlet of Saint-Martin-le-Beau, offered an ambush position from a densely wooded area, with a good view of the tracks, while being difficult for any German reinforcements to reach by road. In the dim light, the team worked quickly but carefully to assemble and deploy the shaped explosive charges along a section of the track. Thanks to the clear pictorial instructions, this process was as simple as putting together flat-packed furniture.

Rather than blowing up the tracks beforehand and risking the sabotage being discovered ahead of the train’s arrival, the plan was to wait until the train was approaching, and detonate the explosives just before the train passed over them, thus guaranteeing that it would not be able to stop in time. So, once the charges were in place, the team retreated into the woods and waited for the train to arrive.

The train appeared at mid-morning as scheduled, and the team, peeking out from among the trees, triggered the explosives when it came within about a hundred metres. The charges worked perfectly, blasting a section of track out of shape, right in the path of the oncoming train. Everything went according to plan and although the train crew tried to react to the explosion, it was clear that they would not be able to bring the train to a stop in time. Our résistants readied their weapons...

...and as the train came closer, they realized that this was not the train we had planned for. Instead of the usual troop transport, this train was hauling coal. Which was fortunate in hindsight — only the locomotive, tender, and first couple of cars jumped the rails, with the rest of the wagons coming to a stop behind. Our résistants were able to easily dispatch the few guards and crew that survived. If this had been a troop train, our team would have not been able to contend with the remaining German forces.

The unexpected arrival of an unscheduled coal train was a wrench in the works, but damage dealt is damage dealt. With this attack, we’ve not only managed to delay the train’s coal shipment and destroy some rolling stock, but with the damage caused to the rail line, we’ve caused disruption and delay in the greater logistics network and hindered the German war effort.

Furthermore, the experience gained from this operation should come in handy soon...

Mission 4

Destruction du Pont

Located just beyond the northwestern tip of Vichy-controlled Zone Libre, Tours is a key rail transportation hub, sited at the intersection of many important railroads — from there, major lines connect to Orleans, Paris and Germany to the northeast; to Le Mans and the English Channel in the north; and to Angers, Nantes, Saint-Nazaire, Poitiers, La Rochelle and the Atlantic coast in the west and southwest. La Résistance has been watching closely as troops, equipment and other supplies, as well as raw materials pass through the massive rail yards of the city on their way to feed the German war machine.

The large supply airdrop obtained from the British SOE was always intended to be used to cripple this crucial hub. But the Germans aren’t stupid either, and all important railroad infrastructure in Tours and neighbouring St-Pierre-des-Corps has always been kept under close guard. Furthermore, La Résistance’s network in Tours itself has recently come under threat with more and more members being arrested over the past fortnight. Most remaining résistants are going to ground to avoid capture. In this situation, the responsibility falls upon other cells in the region — such as ours — to complete the assigned objectives.

Fortunately, the geography of the region means that there are other ways we can attain our goals without a risky assault into the city. Tours sits near the confluence of two rivers — the Loire and the Cher — which means that most of the railroad tracks leading to the city must travel across bridges to get there. A couple of days ago, our fellow résistants in Fondettes were able to successfully overwhelm German sentries at the Viaduc de Saint-Cosme and sabotage the bridge, cutting the rail link between Tours and Le Mans.

Next up is our turn. Our target is the Pont de Montlouis-sur-Loire, the railway bridge just outside the west side of town. Taking this bridge out will sever Tours’ rail link to the north and northeast. With both bridges out of commission, we would effectively cleave the rail network in this region into two, separating north and south, and deny the Germans use of the shortest route between Paris and the majority of the Atlantic coast. All traffic would then be forced to either divert through Le Mans — a busy hub that has been further congested due to heavy damage from British bombing — or to take a lengthy detour south through Vichy France.

Obviously, we can no longer rely on our connections in Tours for any support in the immediate future. In particular, it could prove difficult to obtain more supplies from our British allies. It is thus important that we make the most out of the explosives that we have, and take that bridge out! The plan is to launch a surprise nighttime attack with the full force of our entire cell. We expect no trouble dealing with the bridge guards. A pair of résistants will be posted as lookouts on each side of the bridge while the rest work to rig the bridge with explosives. We will be using pencil detonators, so we can evacuate the area once everything is in place and the delay switches will take care of the rest.

5 team members are required to plant the explosives for this mission.
2 sabotage actions from spies are needed to cause mission failure.

Team Leader sharkie will now make Attempt #1 to nominate a team for Mission #4. The nomination will be locked Wednesday, Feb 15 10:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00), in .

The day of reckoning approaches by the way:
On February 11 2017 20:42 Vivax wrote:
Well my three scenarios are:

  • Sharkie + Grack were both spies. Seeing no out from either scumreading each other or Swika, they let the first mission pass, waiting for the second to blame the newcomer as they felt it would be easier than to attack a vastly townread swika, or being forced to scumread each other. Grack now put sharkie in along with superbia, who can still be either town or spy but for simplicity it's always easier to assume only one spy was on a failed team, so it's usually a win win or eat least no loss scenario for spies to have 2 on a team.

  • Only Grack was spy and decided that he would pass the first, and fail the second. Before it failed he 180° his read on me and townread sharkie instead to try and gather support from all the members of the first three player team + RtaniSoul. Mind you, his read switch happened after I was in an argument with sharkie and rtaniSoul so the timing makes sense as he saw an opening on me here. In this case his current team is all town with exception of superbia who is his infiltrate.

  • Only sharkie is spy. Least likely in my opinion cause I don't believe that Gracks read switch on me was genuine and somewhere I mentioned that if he's town it was maybe borderline gamethrowing, but for sure game changing.

Gracks scenario is that I made an all town team when I was townread already. Even IF I didn't include myself for cred, what would have stopped me from trying to put in a spy? The worst that could happen was that it got rejected and swika put me into the next team anyways, they were ready to do that. So I'm not the guy pushing tinfoil in this case.

My question to Grack and sharkie now is: If this team failed, who would they think was spy?

Minimal effort.
