Like... Obviously there are so many faults but I look over them.
The darker than black series has a lot more surrealistic twists than SAO and I am only in episode 5.

Let me share an example with you. Broken Blade is generally an excellent anime. It ran short, but a lot of anime that are short rather than dragged out are good. Your typical anime/manga writer really only has like 10 episodes of good story in him so better to cut some of the chaff if you can. In any case, Broken Blade follows some tropes and breaks others, but I just really hate it when things straight up pull me out of the anime. ![]() What could be more important than not getting shot? In this scene, this dude just got a gun pulled on him for no reason. It's silly and like awful. Like, if you're gonna have people randomly pulling guns ok but those are lethal and people should react appropriately. I am amazingly ok with being like "there are super robots fighting" or like "there's magic" but things need to be internally consistent and people's actions have to make sense. Nothing about the world of Broken Blade tells me it's normal to wave guns, or threaten violence towards each other, or that this is somehow a joke (in-world, that is; this is clearly meant to be humorous to us watching it). Nobody involved is laughing. If I saw an old friend and her first response to seeing me was to threaten me with murder using a gun, I'd be scared to shit and would not be like totally chill with hanging out with her right afterwards. I'd probably try to run as soon as it was clear she wasn't about to kill me. This is a scene that is hilarious to us as viewers, but should be scary and dark to the people involved. This kind of scene happens again later but with the gun aimed at a man's groin, because of course that is hilarious and wouldn't be terrifying as hell in real life??? Broken Blade was actually fairly OK about a lot of this, barring a few exceptions. The superpower of the hero isn't that awful. But man this stuff bothers me, almost as much as it bothers me that people actually like/prefer it this way. I would note that Broken Blade holds a special place in my heart as the only mecha anime that really justifies the existence of mechas instead of like, tanks. E: And it's not about realism, it's about consistency of realism level. For example, the reaction scenes in Yakitate Japan and basically everything that happens in that anime is totally ok because it's not like some kind of grimdark universe where breadmaking is the only way to save humanity, it's an over-the-top comedy where everyone reacts in the most hilarious way possible. But people, say, waving guns at each other for comedic affect (and spoilers, that gun isn't loaded but the dude thinks it is and still doesn't freak out) is totally not ok in an anime with the tone of Broken Blade. Fate/Zero does a good job of having consistent levels of tone and realism-- you don't see quick cuts of people hitting each other with hammers. Log Horizon does a good job of having consistent levels of tone and realism-- you see people hitting each other with weapons over minor disputes or transforming and wrestling or licking each other to express over-the-top possessive romantic desire in a "funny" way but this is not unusual given the physics of the world they're in and how they act outside of these over-the-top reactions.

But you don't have to worry about most of that with Black Lagoon. I saw it a while back so I don't remember everything. But the characters are generally reasonable and the action's good.

The threat that has taken over the seas is the "deep sea fleet." The only ones who can counter this threat are Kan-musume (literally, warship girls), girls who possess the spirit of naval vessels from days gone by. The base for the fleet arrayed against the "deep sea fleet" is Chinjufu. There, many various Kan-musume have gathered to live together and work hard everyday in training and other matters. One day, a Kan-musume arrives at Chinjufu, She is a special class of destroyer. Her name is Fubuki. "I am Fubuki! Nice to meet you!" Fubuki's story — as well as the Kan-musume's story — begins now. that moment when there's like 50 ships in there and I recognize every single one of those except for tone DESPITE her wearing a shirt that reads neto.... Even the frickin' brown haired akatsuki's were no problem but Tone... Hype is real, aots winter. Also, 15 sec trailer of Tsukimonogatari \o/

Funnily enough someone else, about half a year ago, said he dropped SAO halfway in and I responded with "dude, just skip everything in the second arc and only watch last 2 or 3 episodes if you want to know what happened". Funny because just like you, he watched everything except for the last 2 or 3 episodes when he couldn't stand it anymore. The final fight was somewhat nice to look at. Mostly for boob-related reasons. (Episode 24, ~9:15 and on)

Slightly nsfw: What would SAO be without rape, so click me! You get the fun without having to watch the bullshit! As you can see, the bad-guy tried to literally make her into a sex-doll ![]()
