Don't know if this can actually happen or not but it'd be better to inquire here first and see what everyone's thoughts are because if it would be implemented it'd need to have pretty much the entire mafia forum's support.
Basically FW and I would petition staff if mafia could have its own sidebar since if Health&Fitness is getting it, why not us? Mafia has always suffered from a lack of exposure on TL and while things were going really well for awhile, activity is at an all time low.
Upsides: More players. A lot more. Clearly important considering our current deficit where we can't even fill 1 game let alone 2 or 3.
Downsides: Will attract a lot of the wrong people and there will be a LOT of modkills/bans. We've always been pretty insulated and tight-knit here and this might change that permanently. Are you okay with that?
Yes/No? Thoughts? If you think this is important please post a case for it.
I think its necessary. I honestly don't think it will have a huge effect on how tight knit we are as a community, and frankly, we can't keep going with only about 20 people being able to play. If we have a lot of modkills/bans so be it, its part of growing the community.
I also say yes. We were worried about having the same downsides when the forum went public, but all that did was give us more players without any headache. I feel that this will be a similar situation to that.
I say yes. I always think Mafia is on the sidebar because all the other sub-forums are. :/ So I just click sports/games every time I realize, disappointingly, that it's not.
Is there an issue with people messing up games which they are not a part of? Being insulated away from the masses of TL is partly what keeps ongoing games running smoothly. However, it's very possible that no harm at all would come of it.
I think It would be good. We take the good with the bad, but we get a wide range of players (Maybe). hopefully meaning not the same 25 people in every game (Maybe).
As Vets (so to speak) it will be up to us to lead a good example for newer players to emulate. If we do this, then I dont think we have to worry to much about what kind of people we bring in.
We might have to make some rule changes for games though. Like not being able to post in a game your not apart of. We have been Fairly lax in having a random from others outside the game, but what if We had 25 different people doing it? just something to think about.
I say yes as well. Having new people far outweighs the risks of the potential modkills/bans. Perhaps that might mean having a minimum games played requirement for some of the minis (where modkills hurt the most)?
Is there a way to keep random people from clicking on a thread on the sidebar, and posting "What's this?" or "I want to play!" into the middle of ongoing games? Maybe if it starts happening, we can add a warning to the top of ongoing games not to post if you aren't playing? (Can FW do that?)
That's my only concern, otherwise, I don't see how it could hurt us, and if it does, it's not like it isn't reversible. (Though the mods not might appreciate being bugged so much :p)
flamewheel 12:58:10 AM ohai Mr. Wizard. R1CH 12:58:16 AM Hi hi flamewheel 12:58:22 AM Might i have a moment of your time? 12:58:29 AM http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=279743 12:58:57 AM I talked with Nazgul at IPL about instating forum-wide bans for Mafia a la SCII strategy. 12:59:25 AM Mafia's been wanting a sidebar for a while and since other games have them now... R1CH 1:00:35 AM Hot_Bid is saying no, he's a meanie flamewheel 1:00:44 AM What really? 1:00:45 AM Why HB why? R1CH 1:00:46 AM Then again he didn't know that H&F was on there until just now flamewheel 1:01:00 AM Does that change the decision any? R1CH 1:01:38 AM Not for now 1:01:52 AM I'll be adding further customization on the left sidebar soon-ish, so maybe then we can add it on flamewheel 1:02:08 AM Ah okay. 1:02:15 AM When that happens I'll ask you again then^^
Honestly I just think an intriguing featured post on the frontpage would do the recruitment trick. The problem is the mafia section is invisible unless you know where it is (search for it).
Considering I always try to send people here but can never find it until I give them a link I say it's a good idea our only danger would be a few more trolls but a mod warning once the games actually start should be enough I think.
As for the recruitment thing in your signature consider it done.
Well but seriously sometimes we do post stupid memes and spam 10 posts pregame, which is not allowed at all in the regular forums. And what should wbg do if he is not allowed to post 1 liners consisting of "lol ur such a retard lolol" ?
Can we keep the troll-ish fun parts of the games or do we have to be really boring and serious if we are moderated like other parts of the forums?

Its like the LoL forums, the mods don't usually check them :-P
I don't think it will change much except give us more exposure.

Wow, GMarshal... Your post in the Website Feedback thread... I have no words. And that picture of Hot_Bid's face on the dragon, with a wizard in the bottom left and a knight in the bottom right... Priceless.
Edit: Ah, of course the picture is the handiwork of the hilarious Mr. Wiggles. Well done!

I aim to please. With the help of my handy camera-man, Mr. Wiggles we will continue to provide news updates on the situation.
Anyway, I'm glad it provided some amusement, now lets hope we get the mafia sidebar soon ^_^
EDIT: Whenever you see images in my posts its safe to assume I'm borrowing them from someone, I have exactly zero skill with Photoshop or similar image manipulation software
I think an overlooked problem is that it would actually be a bit of work to get us moved there. And someone would have to moderate this at least a little bit if will be visible. I don't think we will get this anytime soon TT

Are you saying that this is beyond the capacity of our resident wizard? You also seem to be suggesting our report buttons aren't strong enough to deal with any moderation that may be necessary.
Are you scum or a traitor?
Of course R1CH the fixer of the unfixable, the wielder of code, the modern Neo can make us a side bar in ten seconds flat.
Haven't like it since mafia was removed from the forum page. No one can really see it anymore. It hides beneath other sub-forums on the site. Put it on the side please, especially since the other games have sidebars!
On October 27 2011 11:46 chaoser wrote: Is this part of our plans to get a mafia mod?
1) Get on sidebar 2) Get games disrupted 3) Annoy mods all the time to ban people 4) ??? 5) Profit!~ + Get a mafia mod!
I say yes though this does mean we'd be more public and so we'd have to cut back on spamming and be a bit less informal.
I was thinking this. I am fine with it being put on the sidebar assuming we can get some banlings/mods. But I suppose we could gauge the need after opening it up. Making it not require access anymore wasn't bad, so i'd be fine with it on the sidebar.

I'd rather keep our issues internal so we can maintain the level of autonomy we have enjoyed these past few years. I don't like the idea of abusing the report button. I remember we had to do that once and got someone banned before talking about the issue which if I remember right, was taken quite negatively by most of the mafia players.

I was referring more for things like someone who isn't part of the forum coming into a mafia game and just randomly posting. Obviously things that are usually handled internally should still be handled internally.
so any word on what the status of this is right now? Aside from Plexa and Ver, no staff has really posted in the website feedback thread about any of it.

The policy is to keep spamming the thread until we get a response :-P
Worst comes to worst, since I figured out where TL headquarters is, we can always mail them a "present" in the middle of the night that they can enjoy in the morning
Hunh, didn´t even know you could customize the sidebar. Live and learn...
With us in the sidebar, does that mean everyone can post in here, or is it still only those invited? Either way we need to draw players and put up a game for anyone interested, especially mafia players who just got lynched out of their game.

Must have been recently, when I started there was a thread where you had to request access to this forum.

We need more off this subliminal advertising. http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=285768 The most well hidden mafia advertisement it even got featured without TL mods realizing it was a sleepercell thread designed to recruit like minded individuals to our cause.
