DISCLAIMER: This game has strong religious themes which some may find offensive. Keep that in mind when signing up.
In this game, solving puzzles and riddles will be vital to the parties progress. This is not a typical game of mafia. The various win conditions will become apparent as time progresses. The goal of the party is to survive and escape, move through the haunted castle quickly and try to eliminate members of the party that may have turned to the dark side. There is a corrupting force at work that must be eliminated. During the day the party will vote on a member to execute. They must also solve a puzzle. Failure to solve the puzzle during the day can result in negative consequences for the party, although perhaps not always. It is advised the party works toward solving puzzles while attempting to scumhunt. Try to balance roles. Players who excel at solving riddles may spend more time working on the puzzles while players experiences with scumhunting may be inclined to spend their effort doing such.
This is an experimental game. Careful balance has been eschewed in favor of testing new mechanics/game ideas for what will be the real Haunted Mafia game. When the game is finished, the setup will be revealed and can be discussed at length. I would prefer players who sign up to be willing to take part in an extensive post-game commentary and feedback session. I will give out a questionarre at the end that I hope you all answer. Thank you for participating.
If you want to observe this game, then you may signup as an observer after signups are close. I will stay in contact with you giving you the information you need to observe the game properly without knowing the alignments/roles of all players.
The game is typically very active, so the thread will get big quickly. However, it is essential to read the thread to play the game. If you do not have the time or patience to read the whole thread, do not play. I will not compensate for ignorance.
Rules:
Cheating: Cheating includes (but is not limited to): 1. Posting after death. You may have one polite goodbye post, but it may not contain any potentially game-changing information. 2. Ruining the game by doing something like hand out your mafia's member list to the town. 3. Logging on to someone else's account to get their role or looking over someone's shoulder to get their role. 4. Comparing role PM times to determine roles. 5. Posting screenshots of your inbox. 6. Posting any PM you receive from a host. 7. Getting yourself modkilled to help your team. Your non-majority-decided death may not be used as a bargaining chip. 8. Signing up more than once using smurf accounts. 9. Betting items outside of the game in exchange for in-game benefits. 10. Sharing accounts with other players. Only you may post on your account. Cheating is not tolerated here. The punishment will be severe.
Posting:

Question Font: This is question font. Use it to ask the moderators questions about the rules. Please do us a favor and read the rules before you ask anything.
Activity: You must post in this thread once per day/night cycle and vote every day while you are alive. If you fail to do so, you will be modkilled.
Smurfs:

Spam: Spam is not tolerated, nor is any off-topic material. Do not discuss Proleague here. Do not talk about Starcraft II here. Play Mafia here.
Editing: Editing is not allowed for any reason. Editing will result in a warning. After that, you will be modkilled. This is the one part of the site where it is okay to be double posting, even triple-posting. While I ask for everybody to post as concisely as possible, post again if you have to edit anything.
Inappropriate posts: If you want to post something insulting or inappropriate and know the TL mods would have a problem with it elsewhere, don't post it here. If you do, a host will warn you or modkill you and request that you be banned from future games. The hosts have the final say on what is inappropriate. If you do not like how someone is talking to you, please PM a host, Qatol, or Flamewheel before involving the TL staff. If you are unsatisfied with how the situation is resolved, then you can appeal to the TL staff normally.
Reporting posts: The report button is a nice feature for regular TL, but not for this forum. We prefer to deal with things in house if possible to avoid confusion among the TL staff. If you have a problem with how someone is posting, talk to the host, co-host, Qatol, or Flamewheel before using your report button. Please do not use your report button for anything other than inappropriate posts which you feel are not being dealt with adequately.
Ban discussions: Please wait until this game is over to talk about modkills and bans resulting from this game.
Play to win. This means you play your best to help your team win while you are alive and in the game. However, this does not mean that you should try to win by being a jerk to the other players so they all want to quit playing.
This also means that you cannot leave the game without a good reason without a ban. These situations will be dealt with on a case by case basis. PM your host if you need to leave the game.
You have been warned.
Voting rules:
1. Please vote in the following format: ##Vote Qatol. Votes not done in the correct fashion will not be counted. I will update vote counts whenever I get the chance. All votes are posted in thread. 2. No conditional voting. 3. You may vote for yourself. You may not vote for anyone dead or outside the game. 4. In the event of a tie the person with the most votes first wins (or loses). 5. Voting is mandatory. You may NOT abstain.
Signups:
This game is open to anyone with preference for experienced players. Signups will remain open until all spots have been filled.
Game-specific rules:
Modkills: This game does follow the TL Mafia Ban List. If you are modkilled, your punishment may go beyond being eliminated from this game. Please refer to it for questions about your punishment. You can not sit out of this game.
Replacements This game uses replacements. Replacements will be made in the game until Day 2. If a player is modkilled during the designated time, then they will be replaced by a player on the replacement list.
Puzzles: Puzzles do not point toward the identity of scum, rather they are obstacles which must be overcome. If you believe you have solved a puzzle PM the solution to a host. Your answer is considered final. You will be prompted if you wish to reconsider. You are free to discuss the puzzle openly in the thread.
Clues: There are NO clues in this game.
PMs PMs are NOT allowed in this game.
Events Special events will occur with players via PM. Any PM labeled "Event" from a game host is important and should be considered immediately before posting/taking any additional actions as it may change your gameplay significantly. There will be a period of silence during the game in which no posting is allowed in the thread. I will announce when this period occurs. This is to prevent people from posting without reading a very important event PM.
Time Cycle: This game will follow a (24 hour night/48 hour) day cycle. In case I am not able to post around deadline, any votes after the 48 hour mark will not count and the game will be put on halt until the night post is up. Currently the deadline is 7 AM KST/3 PM PST/6 PM EST, but that is subject to change. Credits: Thanks to anyone who has ever hosted a game. This list grows ever longer.
If you have not read all the rules, go back and do so. I will not compensate for ignorance!
Roles - Invitee - You have been invited along with 12 others to the tour of a mysterious castle deep in the forest of Liquidia.
High Priest - The High Priest is the leader of a local religion. He has sent the invitations to the tour which you have accepted with some apprehension. However, he does not appear to be anywhere on the premises of the castle.
Sign-up by simply post "/in". Spots will be reserved for invited and/or experienced players. If you are inexperienced or have not been invited your spot may be given up to a more experienced player or invited player. If you don't make the sign-ups you will be added to a replacement queue.
This game makes use of both hidden roles AND mechanics.
I don't think I have time to play effectively right now DocH, but I really appreciate the invite. Midsummer is an extremely busy time for me. Hopefully come fall and late-fall I will have more time to play.
However, I am definitely interested in being an observer and participating in the post-game discussion.
I hate to have to decline too, but my life is way too hectic to play right now. I'd love an observer spot though, as this is the kind of game I enjoy, all it's missing are clues and PM's :-P
I'm getting the feeling the game will start before Sunday, so I wouldn't mind observing. If it starts on/after that, stick me on the replacement list, please. <3 /in (tentatively)
I'd like to observe the game at the same pace as the other players. If any other observers are interested, we should set up a quicktopic and discuss the game amongst ourselves as the game goes on.
I've been wanting to do this for a little while, but all the recent games have been PM games, and following along outside the game doesn't work very well for PM games.

In that case you will receive a role PM and the various event pms as though you were in the game but you will not actually be participating, this will simply give you an idea of what players go through. You observers may act as a ghost party if you want and can submit puzzle solutions. That could be fun.

Count me in if you do this, I was going to ask for the whole setup, but light discussion seems more fun ^_^
oh wow can i observe the game too? seems like fun. No pressure and just discussing a game with other people. iirc, someone said this was the best way to get better. Im all for that. /observe

Excellent.
OK, I've made a quicktopic, and am PMing it to those folks who are interested in joining in the discussion. If anyone would like to join in, just PM me and I'll send you the link. If you'd simply like to observe the observers, that's fine too. Players are obviously not invited to join. Observers who have complete information(Originalname, etc.) are welcome to join, but I would ask that they refrain from posting so as to not bias the discussion.
A mysterious castle stands alone in the snowy wilderness...
The entrance chamber of the abandoned Liquidian castle is an impressive sight to behold. A long red carpet leads from the doorway to the center of the room where a bust of Julius Caesar rests on a small pedestal. There are bookshelves lining the room, filled with ancient grimoires and spellbooks dating centuries before the present age. There is a draft in the room, despite the door being closed behind you and you can't help but feel as though some mysterious presence is watching you and the other guests.
There is an eerie silence. As your mind reels trying to take in your surroundings, you become aware of faint noises coming from the floor above. There are two large doors on either side and twin staircases leading up to the second floor of the castle. Behind the bust of Caesar is a large double door. Although you have never been here before, there is a dim familiarity to your surroundings as though you had been here previously in a dream. Perhaps it was a nightmare. Regardless, the party agrees to move through the double doors past the rooms center.
The room opens up into what appears to have been a large dining hall. It is mysteriously empty, which gives you a very uncomfortable feeling. There are thirteen chairs in a circle in the center of the room. They are made from red leather and set quite far apart from each other although they are in comfortable speaking distance. An old chandelier hangs from the ceiling, you wonder how it has been lit considering the castle appears to have been abandoned for quite some time. There is still no sign of the priest who has invited you.
Past the chairs, a few steps lead to a slightly lower level of the room. It must have been a ballroom before. There is a small stage on the far north side of the room and there are four curtained balconies on both side walls. Perhaps the priest intends to put on a production of some sort. Before you sit down at your chair, you are overwhelmed by fear and you stand suddenly in shock. When you blink your eyes you see red. Monstrous faces are blurred into the red mist that appears when your eyes shut and before you start to panic it disappears. You feel unsafe, but still you sit.
Suddenly the doors shut behind you. The group stands and turns around. One man runs up to the doors and tries to open them.
"They won't budge." He says, with a look of disappointment and fear on his face. You notice a queer odor coming from the west side of the room, but it is faint.
"How are we going to get out? Are we supposed to wait for the priest?" Another man says, sitting across from you.
You think you see a vaguely shadowy figure in one of the balconies but it might just be your eyes playing tricks on you. It's probably a chair casting a shadow. The chandelier swings, but there is no wind. Even though you're creeped out, it's probably best to stay calm. Fear rarely leads to good decisions.
The party looks panicked. You all sit down and begin to discuss things...
Night 0 has begun. There is no voting or anything of that sort. Night 0 will end in 24 hours.
For clarity sake, I've assigned each of you a name. I suggest everyone refer to each player by their assigned name from now on. Those not listed shall be allowed to compete for my approval by competing in a variety of house cleaning challenges. Good luck.

I assume the enemy is most likely some sort of cult. In the op it mentions
The goal of the party is to survive and escape, move through the haunted castle quickly and try to eliminate members of the party that may have turned to the dark side. There is a corrupting force at work that must be eliminated.
So possibly the game is starting night 0 so that whoever is leading the cult can determine who they want to recruit?
Curu paced backed and forth, agitated at the slight odor that seemed to be rising from bumatlarge. Curu wrinkled his nose as he finally took a seat, deep in thought. He ignored the babblings of the lunatic kitaman27, who seemed on a mission to assign ridiculous names to each denizen, much to the confusion and agitation of Sauron, the All Seeing Eye.
redFF stared at everyone suspiciously, muttering to himself. He was ignored by all of his peers. Finally he rose and roared at each person, spittle flying everywhere in his fervor.
"What are your intentions?!" he bellowed in a voice that reverberated throughout the room.
He was still ignored by all his peers.
Meanwhile, the hapless citizens trapped in the Castle failed to notice Coagulation standing near the barred door. A man of few words, none had ever heard him speak more than a sentence a day. More ominous than his silence, however, was the wickedly serrated hunting knife he had tucked inside his waistcoat, ready for use...
Suddenly a dull groan emitted from the man lying on the floor, previously thought dead.
"UNHNGHGHGH BRAAAAAINS," groaned Amber[LighT] as he rose, staring mindlessly at Syllogism. "NO BRAINS THERE," he declared as he turned away from Syllogism, looking for a new target.
Everyone waited with bated breath for what the zombie would say next...

If this is the case, I would like to address the mysterious and evil cult leader. If you are for even a moment considering recruiting me, I'd like to direct you to my first, and as of yet only, game as scum: TL Mafia XL III, in which I was lynched day 1.
I am not a good scum player, so please leave my soul pure, thanks very much.

Do you think you have what it takes to become a premier cultist?
Then Cult of Palmar might be the right Cult for you! We are looking for world class cultists to bolster our ranks, bring in expertise and help us develop an even better Cult.
As a Cultist your responsibilities would be to spread the ideas of the Cult to the uninitiated and of course eternal loyalty to the Cult leader.
A successful candidate must possess these qualification:
A strong belief in the Cult's values
Fierce loyalty
The willingness to sacrifice his own time (or soul) for the good of the Cult
Proficiency in Black Magic
In addition, the following skills would increase the chance of being hired
Knowledge of potions
Owning a creepy black hooded cloak
Photoshop experience
The right candidate will be someone who fulfills the above while showing passion and will to join the Cult. For the right person we can offer immortality, or at least an extended life cycle, in addition to power beyond imagination.*
Please leave your applications in this thread, I will look them over and hire the best candidates tomorrow.
The Cult of Palmar is a global Cult devoted to the ideas of it's glorious leader, Palmar. The Cult has followers in at least 2 countries and one planet. Our mission is to spread the Cult as far as we can and eventually bring darkness onto the world.
* May not apply to individuals with very vivid imagination
@Palmar is this just you having fun or does your cult actually have benefits in terms of extra lives, as This:

The amount of lunatics increased. Enraged at the perceived insult, Syllogism ripped off the zombie Amber[LighT]'s arm and stuffed it in Amber's mouth, ensuring Amber's continued silence as the zombie munched happily on his own undead flesh.
Trotske, the insecure hermaphrodite, nervously stammered its input before retreating back into its own corner, afraid to be ridiculed by its peers.
Coagulation smoothly reassured his companions of his good intentions, wearing an oily smile that never touched his eyes. Despite his reassurances, the wickedly curved sickle with I AM DEATH splotched across it in the blood of fifty virgins subtly proclaimed that his intentions were anything but good.
Meapak_Ziphh, the stinky uneducated hobo, introduced himself much to the chagrin of all assembled.
bumatlarge, more commonly known as Bruce Wayne, say quietly in his seat carefully observing the gathered people.
And finally Palmar, the snakery snake snake, drew himself up as he hissed at the crowd,
"Sssssssss join my cultsssssssssssssssssssss," he proclaimed, pulling out a piece of wrinkled parchment with terms on it. "Firsssssssssssssssssssssssst to kill the detecctivessssssssssssss getssssssssssss one week paid leave."

I think those terms are acceptable. Show up tomorrow morning for your first day at the job!
You become aware of a faint whirring sound coming from the south doors. It seems to go away and you continue your discussion, which has proved to be pretty useless so far.
Your discussion is interrupted by a faint sound of whirring. Your vision becomes blurred and it would seem like the rest of the party is experiencing a similar confusion. This is alarming. Your chair starts to shake and you stand up from it quickly. In a sudden crash, all the chairs are thrown from where they were sitting toward the stage. You look back up at the western balcony and you could swear you saw a shadowy figure move. Is it the priest? Or something terrible...
Everything appears to be spinning. You are filled with an impending sense of dread and fear. You feel as though your death is inevitable. You can't give up. You struggle to move but fall to your knees, your hands landing in something wet. You look down. On the floor surrounding you is a pentagram made from what you hope is not human blood...
you recall a dream you once had...
You lift your head up and see everyone else is in a similar predicament. One man does not appear to be. In fact, you believe you hear him laughing. He looks into your eyes briefly. Never have you felt a fear like this before. You fight to recognize him but your vision is too blurred. The room begins to fill with a thick red mist. You try to stand up and run but you fall again. Much of the room is on fire now and the chandelier falls from the ceiling with a nearly deafening crash.
This red mist is the same from before when you closed your eyes. The odor of it is pungent and you can hear the voices of spirits carried inside the thick fog. Monstrous faces and figures move about, obscured by the fog. Horrifying shapes and demons dart about with glee. You open your mouth to scream but you can not make a sound. You see nothing but red smoke and the shadows of awful things from a nightmare. Perhaps you have fallen into one.
A large creature with grotesquely long limbs and no face slithers past you. Its head turns to you as though to watch you but there are no eyes. No features. The skin of the creature is grey and silky. It looks at you for a while then walks past, dragging its arms uselessly but horrifyingly on the floor. You are almost certain one of these horrors will kill you.
A shadowy figure walks slowly toward you. You try to crawl away but you are too slow. The creature is cloaked in a long black robe. Perhaps it is death itself. A bony hand extends toward you and you muster the strength to smack it away. Touching the bone shocks you and a sharp pain runs through your body. The creature stops for a minute, perhaps surprised by your audacity, but none the less it continues its slow and steady stalk of you.
Your arms pull you across the ground toward the south door which had swung open. As you grow nearer to the doorway you notice that even more terrifying creatures block the way. There is a large shadow, which would be that of a man if it were not for the horns and bat wings. Is it the devil himself? You stop struggling and accept the fate of your death. The cloaked figure stops when it reaches you. It bends down and you see a pair of gleaming eyes beneath the hood. Its head shakes side to side in pity. A cold bony hand grasps the back of your neck and you slip into a deep deep sleep...
There is a period now of silence. NO POSTING IS ALLOWED UNTIL DAY 1 POST. Everyone will recieve a special event PM. After each PM is sent out, the next Day will begin. PLEASE READ YOUR EVENT PM BEFORE POSTING IN THE NEXT DAY. I'm sure you are all itching to discuss the intense event that just occured but the Day will begin shortly within the next 30 minutes
The party reassembles at the dining chamber. The room is back to normal, except for the huge pentagram on the floor, made clearly from human blood. You look toward the stage. The sight is terrifying. A cross is erected upside down on the stage, with the curtains torn from the rafters and thrown to the side. Jaedong hangs from the cross. His chest has been slit open from his navel to the top of his throat. His intestines hang out from the cavity, swinging like some grotesque pendulum. The guts are slimy and purple, dripping blood onto the floor around him. His mouth was cut from the sides of the mouth to the ears. It's a glasgow smile. He's never looked happier. His teeth are pulled out and arranged in a smiley face in a pool of blood on the floor. A sick taunt.
If the demonic creatures last night were not responsible for this horrific murder than someone here is. After discussing it with the others, it is agreed that there is evil amongst you. You can sense it in your gut. You all return to the previous chamber. One man tries to open the entrance door but it seems to be sealed by some otherworldly force.
You make your way upstairs, but the doors on the second level are locked. You all move back downstairs. The bust of Julius Caesar stares intently at you and you decide to check the inscription on the pedestal.
SPEAK IT TO MOVE XVI
YDDE Q ______
It appears to be some sort of riddle. What could it mean? A book lies on the floor as well. You pick it up and a card falls out.
I hid the item A safe beneath the stage.... the combin......LEVIATHAN
You read it to the party. While interesting it doesn't appear to be of immediate relevance and you switch your focus to the inscription on the caesar bust. There is a lot to consider. The presence of a possible traitor, a confusing riddle, a mysterious card, it seems too much to bear. If there is more than one murderer in your midst, things could be quite grim. Regardless, there is nothing to do but move on and try to figure this all out.
The Day has begun. If you believe you have solved the puzzle of the bust or the mysterious card you may PM me your answer. Your answer is considered FINAL. It's fine to discuss either puzzle in the thread. Puzzle solutions will NOT lead to scum. You're going to have to rely on your scumhunting instincts. Good luck. If you have questions about how the game works from here on out do not hesitate to ask.
I will be focusing my attention on the puzzles, at least initially. I woke up in a rather uninteresting room and heard a child laughing. That's about it.
Human blood on the walls of my room. Creepy shit, man. I also received an item, and a puzzle to solve. I'm not on my computer (posting from my phone) and won't be for another couple of hours, but when I am I'll explain further/answer any questions.
The bastards killed Jaedong. Such atrocities shall not be permitted.
The puzzle has been solved. I forgot to mention that starting to day and every day from now on you must vote on a member to execute. Voting is done in this thread, please refer to the OP for voting rules.
Satana.....
The Caesar bust turns around in a 180 degree circle and you hear a click from upstairs. The party agrees that before moving on to a possibly dangerous upper level, it must be determined who in the party is a threat. The party must vote on someone to kill before moving to the next level.
Well activity isn't going to create itself. I woke up in a bloody room, I heard a child laughing, so far this is consistent with what others have said, Can we talk about what our room looks like?. My room is fairly plain, but maybe we can glean something by constructing some sort of picture of all our rooms.
I have made no progress on the second puzzle but I've PM'd DrH with a question about the it which may help us out.
I'd like Varpulis to elaborate on the puzzle he received.
Is our room description even relevant? Discussing flavor text seems more distracting than anything.
Palmar, I assume you made up your cult role? We don't exactly need another imaginary faction like chezinu's banking services -_-
I'll vote syllogism for now. I found it weird that he found it necessary to tell us that we was going to focus on the puzzles. (Thanks for solving it btw :p)
Curu stared at the psycho kitaman27 babbling on about his nonsensical suspicions. The big buff Syllogism had just solved the clue to the next room, that was not enough reason to suspect someone.
Suddenly Curu whirled around. There was Coagulation, creeping up behind him. Quickly Coagulation hid his hand behind his back; that same hand held a red knife dripping with the innards of Jaedong.
Elsewhere in the room Mig the Colossus abruptly tipped and fell in hilarious fashion because he was imbalanced.

That's a really fast vote don't you think? Solving the puzzles will probably help the town, him telling us that he's gonne solve the puzzle seems reasonable considering that he actually solved it and didn't use his statement as an excuse for inactivity. What about that do you find weird?

Really fast votes generate more discussion than discussing flavor text, no?
Solving puzzles seems to be the easiest way to gain town cred without inflicting much damage to ones own scum team. I know if I had drawn a scum role, that would be my first priority.

Well you've generated discussion :D
I get your point about easy town cred but I feel that would come into play later in the game when there's more going on and reds need a reason to be active but not not scumhunt, when syllo made his statement there wasn't anything going on so there would be no reason for a scum to even pop up and and be heard.
Anyway beyond syllo, if he hadn't made his statement who would you have "discussion voted" instead and why?
Curu also stared at redFF, the paranoid used cars salesman, very suspiciously. Perhaps even more suspiciously than Coagulation. Some business about "role PM" and knowing that they changed. Curu's own had not changed.
I don't think it's just flavor kita, but I think there are reasons not to discuss exactly what was in our rooms unless it seems relevant to something already on the table. I don't want to say what was in my room.
Syllogism solved the puzzle really fast, and I'd think he would have discussed it with his team if he was mafia. But he could have done it for reasons kita stated, so I think that dipping into WIFOM territory.
I think syllo should tell us how he solved it so we can guess at the nature of the next puzzle, and also if syllo has any reason for solving it other then what was stated in the day post.
@Meapak, dunno, maybe you for your irrelevant mentioning of the building layout, which promotes discussion without contribution? Anyone pop out to you yet?
Now to be completely hypocritical and discuss the puzzles: This was an image in the night zero post and seems to possibly have something to do with a leviathan:
In Satanism, according to the author of The Satanic Bible, Anton Szandor LaVey, Leviathan represents the element of Water and the direction of West. The element of Water in Satanism is associated with life and creation, and may be represented by a Chalice during ritual. In The Satanic Bible, Leviathan is listed as one of the Four Crown Princes of Hell. This association was inspired by the demonic hierarchy from The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abra-Melin the Mage. The Church of Satan uses the Hebrew letters at each of the points of the Sigil of Baphomet to represent Leviathan. Starting from the lowest point of the pentagram, and reading counter-clockwise, the word reads "לִוְיָתָן". Translated, this is (LVIThN) Leviathan.
It could also have something to do with Envy. I'm not exactly sure what is being asked.

Hmm that's interesting because I can't see how the contents of my room can be anything, but flavor. I don't blame you for not wanting to share all your satanic idols you've been collecting I suppose. Carry on.

Fair enough, you're consistent with what you pick for. As for me, no one has screamed scum to me so if forced to vote right now I'd go for curu just to eliminate someone who's playing anti town.
As for the leviathan clue, I've already come across the biblical stuff, in fact I already sent in my answer which, since I haven't got a response yet, I assume is wrong. My question for the thread is, should I tell you guys what I wrote? It could be a double edged sword, town would know not to pick it but mafia would be warned off as well.
Hey Curu this isn't the D&D game you're GMing, this is a mafia game. For the love of god stop and actually play the game the way it was meant to be played.
Meapak, my room was pretty creepy, but the items in it are more important, no? I have an item, the use and purpose of which i will not disclose at the moment, which i can either use or give to somebody else, a puzzle which i can send a solution in for instead of using/giving away my item, and a table. The table does nothing, as far as I know, but it might have something to do with the puzzle, i'm not sure. It's just a table, but it was set off in italics, so it's bound to be important.
The second puzzle in the day post has something to do with the combination of a safe. Is there a possibility that LEVIATHAN translates into a number? Just putting out ideas. Syllo what was the answer to the first one?

Not sure how i made that mistake, but my point still stands. If the lynch was in 5 minutes I'd lynch Curu, because he's playing anti-town.
Anyway as for actual scum hunting. I still think most likely the scum team is some sort of cult and they used n0 to recruit. Most 11-12 man games have 2 scum so I would guess there is 1 cult leader and they recruited 1 person last night. So I ask myself who is most likely to have been recruited last night? If I were the cult leader I would A) recruit a good veteran and B) recruit someone if they had gotten any town cred. So looking at those factors I would have recruited Meapak. Meapak is a good player and is one of the most experienced players. Also Meapak responded to red's question with he had good intentions. I think all the townies know that in their initial pm it said that Your intentions are good.
Unless some more solid evidence comes up right now Meapak seems the most likely scum to me. Vote: Meapak_Ziphh
Do you have anything more solid so far varp? It is easy to bash my idea while providing nothing yourself. So tell me where my logic is wrong and who is scummier so far?
Curu. His play is in no way contributing to creating a good town environment or finding scum, and he is unresponsive and mocking of requests to play seriously.
@Varpulis: can we hear more about your puzzle? If it helps the town then maybe we can all try and solve it. Of course if it would hurt the town or help the mafia just say so and I'll drop it.
@Coag: I hear you brother.
@Mig: That's a bunch of speculation and WIFOM. Leaving the setup speculation aside I'll address your A and B: A)Bumatlarge, Amber, Kita, and Coag are all equally if not more experienced than me so I'm not the best pick there, B) everyone received the same PM (as you pointed out) so we're all equal in terms of town credit.
@lurkers, get in here and talk bitches. Especially Palmar, are you still trying to recruit people... bro?
Side note people way way over use wifom. Using logical deduction to come to a conclusion is not wifom. My case against meapak could be wrong but it is not wifom.
Do you think it is more likely for curu to troll at the start of a game as town or mafia? I certainly agree he is not helping town right now but I think in general mafia are going to be more hesitant to make people mad at them right away. If he continues it could be another story. If you do think he is scummy for this what do you think about palmar's fake cult?
So right now if I had to pick between curu's trolling, syllo's figuring out the puzzle too quickly and claiming it or my conclusion about who would be picked by a possible cult leader, I like my case against meapak the best.
Meapak I agree there are several other good candidates but you were the only one who fit the veteran criteria and had the extra town cred. I don't think we can know that everyone necessarily received the same pm with the good intentions on it but that confirmed you to everyone who did.
Also I am curious to hear what you think about there being a possible cult. Do you believe this is the most likely how the scum team was formed or do you favor another possibility?

I have no idea what the reward for solving the puzzle will be. All I know is that it will be something helpful. Given that I'm town aligned, helpful for me should equal helpful for everybody, so i don't mind sharing. This is the puzzle, in its entirety:
PLACE THEM \ LEFT TO RIGHT THE MAN BORN I THE FALLEN KING OF BABYLON II THE LIGHT III THE END IV THE MORNING STAR V THE STAGE VI
In italics on the line under the puzzle is the sentence There is a table in the room...
I've had no luck in solving it, but i haven't given it that much thought.
@Mig your argument against me is a "logical deduction" that could be made about several players.
Anyway moving on to the setup, I'm not discounting there being a recruiter, what I'm saying is that at this point it's pure speculation to try and figure out who was converted if there was even a conversion (which we don't know). Going back to your argument against me, that's your reasoning for picking a player if you were the recruiter. If I was a recruiter I'd have a different set of guidelines and probably everybody in the game would pick someone different.
That being said, if there is a recruiter we have a huge strategic problem because there is no such thing as a confirmed townie. I'll grant you picking protown people is a very good strategy because it strikes the double blow of discord and the loss of a strong player.
I guess I haven't properly answered your question yet. I think it's probably limited recruitment. In a game this size it would be extremely hard for town to win against a scum team that can recruit every night. If you add in nks the town losses people way faster than they can kill scum. This is all speculation though which I feel really has no point :/ How much do you want me to speculate? I mean I could start guessing on how many times they can recruit or what nights they can recruit...
That's fine meapak. I mainly feel a cult is most likely from the OP and then the fact that there was a night 0. I didn't have anything to do night 0, did any other townies? If no townies had things they could do n0 then there must have been a reason mafia needed it.
Anyway for varp's puzzle The fallen king of babylon and the morning star are both names for lucifer/satan right? So maybe it is a 6 letter puzzle where each answer represents a letter?
Varpulis try the book of revelations. http://www.apocalypseangel.com/morningstar.html here's a site that you can look through, maybe there's something useful in there. Anyway religous things really aren't my forte and I'm tired so night everyone, lurkers come play, mig pl0x don't lynch me while I'm gone ^^.
I suppose I might as well reveal that I was rewarded a second inventory slot for solving the puzzle. I did anticipate that there might be rewards for solving the puzzles as you had to PM the answers to the host. I may not submit an answer for the second one, but if I figure something out I can post suggestions in the thread.
That's cool syllo, I guess these puzzles will be more logically based like that, All I can see on the second one is the combination being based on LEVIATHAN, but with the previous riddle it might be a bit short-sighted to focus on the letters as the numbers. And Varp, you're riddle has a stage part, perhaps they are in some way related. I think if we find a stage in a room ahead we'll find a safe, and also you can better grasp you're riddle.
I'm putting my vote on mig as of right now, because speculating on a set-up, that has not been backed up by anything, then accusing someone based off it is a waste of time. Either him or curu. I can understand voting redff as well, but I don't think his intent was bad
it's not the intentions thing, it's the fact that he felt the need to back up his methodology with something like "they do it on that other forum". That's just a safety net for if the town hates him for it.
Varpulis riddle sounds somehow familiar; perhaps the same concept with different words but I can't quite place it. As to the card puzzle, it feels like there's information missing if it points to a safe combination. For instance, if LEVIATHAN refers to bible, the combination could be 41:1-41:34, but would that mean 41 right, 1 right, 41 left, 34 left or what? Also is there a significance to part of the word combination being cut off? In the light of first puzzle, I think we shouldn't overthink the answers.

Oh and unless it's just flavor or it's referring to something else, I've a reason to believe either no one was scum until day 1 began or there's a recruiter. It's also even possible that no one is scum yet. DrH stressed that people should read their event PMs carefully, which could, among other things, refer to alignment change. I guess with all the caveats the information isn't very useful, but I'm less inclined to lynch someone based on posts they made before the day 1 post.

I was not speculating on the role set-up from nothing.
The goal of the party is to survive and escape, move through the haunted castle quickly and try to eliminate members of the party that may have turned to the dark side. There is a corrupting force at work that must be eliminated.
This combined with there being a n0 where no townies have claimed to have had to do anything to do makes it seem to me that recruiter is the most likely setup.
The part about meapak being the one selected is speculation but he makes the most logical sense to me. Regardless there is nothing wrong with speculating on the setup at the beginning of day 1.

Well since you're on the same track I was I figure I'll tell you, I tried 41 for the second puzzle, I haven't gotten an answer so I assume it's wrong. DrH told me the second puzzle is solved on a standard 0-9 keypad.
The keypad has the numbers one through nine and an enter key that inputs the number you select (allowing you to input numbers of multiple digits). You may input numbers indefinitely, when the correct pattern is produced the safe will open. I can not tell you how many numbers are in the combination.

This might be good for some of us who may not be so good with puzzles. I tried doing the caeser cipher but I was working so it wasn't coming out quite as I wanted it to.

While I like the thinking about the recruiter If I were one I would probably try to get to you mig considering your meta is if we haven't found scum by d2 mig is scum. so I really don't think a lynch at one of our vet players is a good idea until we have something more than a educated guess.
I would much rather vote for curu or palmer for both of their annoying posts but that doesn't mean they are scum.
I'm thinking that if there is a recruiter they just got picked last night or they can't recruit every night or town would be at a huge disadvantage.
K. regarding the intentions thing. In n0 i got a role pm as townie saying i had good intentions, I was asking the intentions of others in the hope i could easily confirm some people. I've actually come to think that we all recieved the same role pm n0, and that our real roles/alignments were given out at the start of day1.
You sense that something may have changed about the party members who slowly begin to return to the main dining chamber. You are not sure what it is yet.
Meta argument: bad. You can play really well one game and really terribly the next, but if your behavior is the same, and your arguments follow the same logic, i'll call you town as easily in the second as in the first.
Lynch based on behavior in the game, and actions with scum motivations, not because he hasn't filled his quota.
Reread his post and it's not really a meta argument, but a statement relying heavily on meta. The statement: "I would much rather vote for curu or palmar for both of their annoying posts but that doesn't mean they are scum" doesn't sit will with me.

Well that was the initial assumption, but the problem to me is that there are so many possibilities, it's hard to rule anything out and you only get one chance. Of course, we just could be missing something incredibly obvious.

I really haven't gotten a scum read but a person of interest is mig because I don't agree with his reasons to try to get an experienced person lynched.

Right now there is a single vote on half the players, allowing the scum to place a single vote and basically choose who dies tonight. Even if we don't agree on a certain person, we need to consolidate our votes between two people to make scum manipulation more difficult. Even for a day one, the effort from most people has been rather minimal. Scum hunting should take priority over clue discussion.
Trotske, you mentioned three different players who you might vote for, but indicated you don't really have a scum read on any of them. Is there anyone you want to see dead? Meakpak, do you see Amber's inactivity as a scum tell or do you plan to eventually change your vote?

Syllogism shared his reward, it was just an extra inventory slot. I was curious if the rewards would have more variety. From your response, it seems they do.
If you don't want to share, fine by me.
How did you solve it though? Knowing the methodology and line of thinking that leads to correct answers will be helpful.
not gonna tell u cuz i think ur mafia.
Maybe I'm being naive but don't you think some disclosure about items should be made? Even if its in the form of a clever bread crumb it might be a good idea for anyone who has or may get an item to leave some trail for later.
We don't really know how items work or what the items will do if used, and maybe it should stay that way for now to keep the cultists guessing.
Rereading the thread, it looks like we are basically left with either lynching a lurker, lynching based on setup/meta or purely random lynching. I don't know to what extent the setup was RNGed, but if there is a cult recruiter, it's almost certain the role went to someone DrH considers veteran/good. It's rather unlikely he completely RNGed this as a lot of work clearly went into this and having it end early would be unfortunate.
I don't know DrH at all, but this line of thinking rules out at least Varpulis/Trotske/Curu/Me and probably a few others. These players also aren't likely night 0 cult recruiting targets. I'll further narrow it down to meapak/kita/bumat/coag/amber/palmar/mig. I'm eliminating mig/palmar from consideration rather arbitrarily for now. Coag seems to be playing his recent style of "not actually playing the game", so voting him would be tempting. Amber hasn't been doing anything either. Bumat has been only marginally more active while meapak and kita have been putting more effort into this. I think a cult recruit would be putting more effort into this, so I'll be deciding between those two, or possibly amber, tomorrow. These are quite weak reasons for lynching someone, but I've to work with what I have.
Why is everyone so certain that someone has been recruited into a cult? I don't know about you guys, but I was unable to perform any night actions on night zero, so I assume it is the same for others. Accusing people of being cult recruits at this point is only placing unnecessary doubt on pro-town players. syllogism, your thought process behind your vote is rather odd. Not only is it unlikely that anyone is a cult recruit, you are also punishing activity and promoting a poor thread environment.

Yes, it's unfortunate but if I go on the path of lynching useless lurkers, I will still be stuck lynching lurkers by day 4. I will of course reconsider based on thread activity. I'm also not completely against lynching someone based on being worthless, but I'm inclined to believe that in the likely setup the scum will not be found there. There are flavor and more substantial reasons for believing the game did not begin as a standard 9/3 setup. Whether there is a recruiter or if DrH is making the decisions is another story. Nothing about the setup is obviously guaranteed, but you would have to provide me reasons for me to believe that it's a normal setup.

Big differoni between being pro-town and being a vet. We would be stupid to not consider the cult thing as a big possibility though. Obviously this is very religious based.
On August 06 2011 07:26 kitaman27 wrote: Meakpak, do you see Amber's inactivity as a scum tell or do you plan to eventually change your vote?
The first game I ever played as scum I had Amber on my team and he acted exactly the same way as he is now. His only post so far in the game has completely fit his scum behavior that I've observed and played along side. If anyone wants to see that game it's insane mafia II, just use the new filter feature on Amber and you'll see what I'm talking about. So yes, unless something radically changes my vote will stay on amber for playing his scum meta to the T.
Not sure if you guys read what I posted earlier but don't you think in a game of 12 people that if the recruiter could get a new cultist every night that would make very mafia sided. So going down the recruiter theory I think either they just got their powers at the end of night 0 and haven't had a chance to get anyone or they can only recruit like a certain amount of people but I doubt they have had a chance to get more than one person.
Scum wise right now I'm looking at redFF because the other small game I played with him SNMMV he was a lot less talkative as town. Thing is though this game is a lot more interesting with puzzles and such so the one game meta is kind of useless but is a good reason to keep an eye on him.
if we had to lynch one person right now I would go for curu he has a few posts in the thread but they are all useless he hasn't said anything useful for the town the whole game.
Most of syllo's thoughts are similar to my own, however considering the amount of trolling and lack of activity in the town it isn't in our best interests to kill kita/meapak right now. So looking at the other potential veteran candidates Coag looks like the best option. He has almost no posts and gave 0 reasons for voting trotske, and more importantly he ignored trotske when he asked for the reason behind the vote. #Unvote Meapak
You're voting coag bc you fear he won't post at all or because you legit think his play is scummy? Either scenario is trumped by the idea that his meta involves him doing nothing until about day 3 regardless of his alignment. Unless you think he's a threat to the "town" I don't think he's the best lynch target.
I always find it fascinating to see how the pregame chat changes as soon as day starts. With that said I really think palmar is the best lynch candidate as of right now. His pregame cult thing kinda got me nervous. It's a good cover up to hang backon later in the game.

So why didn't you post that reason at the time of your vote? And trotske has done plenty of suspicious things since then. Last page he said red was the scummiest person yet voted curu. Every time someone asks troske his opinion he lists a different person he is suspicious of. But instead of bringing any of these points up you lurk not posting then only show up once someone votes for you. If you actually thought trotske was still the scummiest you could have made a case to actual push him for a lynch but you chose not to.

Yeah the votes are really spread out. Perhaps we should narrow down candidates, so that we can actually have something to go on for later. In a recruiting set-up, it is generally accepted that vets get picked up nearly 90% of the time. The recruiter forces town to lose a valuable asset, while bolstering his team more effectively then normal. Aside from that, we don't have any evidence supporting that this so it shouldn't have any impact on who we lynch.
Mig, Curu, or redff are all viable picks, and we should probably keep it between these three unless someone feels otherwise.
Mig,curu and redff are all viable picks based on what? If it's because you consider those the most likely recruiter targets, I disagree. We should keep between them unless someone feels otherwise? We already have people mostly voting for other candidates so that seems rather nonsensical
I agree bum that curu is a fine choice if we have no other options but I'd really like to know why you think the other two are viable.
I'm about to go on car trip which will last 11 or 12 hours so I won't be here for the lynch. My vote is staying on Amber, his one post did nothing to sway me and in fact it made me even more suspicious.

OMGUS? More like "I cant believe you're not dead already." Two people have chosen to use meta play as a reason for why I'm scummy, despite my meta changing each and every game. You're both on the radar since you haven't proven to me how you're not scum. Palmar you are the best lynch:
1. You were kidding around pre-game with your cult nonsense to draw out some people. Your most detailed post was one that didn't even matter to the game:
2. Then you disappear and make silly accusations and useless posts. See:

Instead, you took the easy way out and just threw yourself onto Meapaks idea because you know I'm not a threat to the town, but you want to make this lynch "ezpz" for your cult.
4. Your "meta" is not consistent with your town play either.
I don't really want to go down this road, but since you prodded me I'll hit back. You want to talk about past games? I remember you being really active in EVERY game we've played together [PTP1, AA, PTP2, etc]. You were never scum afaik, aside from black, which is a whole different can of worms. What should we do about items? Should we disclose them or hide them from public view? Why?
Are there any details about your room that you didn't disclose?

isn't calling someone bad and dismissing their argument because of it a classic scum tell?
The votes are so spread out that I'll rather vote to lynch someone who isn't going to be useful or make his alignment apparent than risk lynching someone more active when scum can potentially just redirect the lynch. I'll be around for the lynch though so I'll re-evaluate if necessary.

I think it is scummy. N0 palmar was one of the most active players, all his activity was centered around his joke cult but at least he was posting frequently. Once day starts palmar basically stops posting anything longer than 1 line. If you filter palmar's posts you will see even now almost half his posts were made n0. Normally you would think he would be more active once the game actually started not less. If we are dealing with a n0 recruiter a sudden shift in activity level could be very telling.
Then if you look at his soft attacks on me/redff early on they feel un-palmar like. He gives almost no reasons behind them and puts no pressure on either of us. He has done virtually no scum hunting this game other than soft attacks and now responding to amber.
Finally his defense against amber is weak. He says he hasn't been active because he is out of town, I am not saying that is necessarily scummy but we can only use what information we have in game so this doesn't tell us anything. And he says that amber's attack on him is wishy washy which is definitely a stretch.
I still think Coag is suspicious for disappearing and not making any attempts to build a case against trotske. But after thinking on it more I think Palmar is the most likely to be scum. ##Unvote Coagulation

coagulation, why so inactive? I don't care if it's your meta, a little more effort would be nice.
I don't like the case on Coagulation, as it's basically just lynching the lurker. Coagulation is always completely useless on day 1, lynching him isn't bad, per se, it's just sort of ...derp. It's like lynching Kenpachi. The entire case is that he sucks.
I'd rather you guys took a look at Amber's posting. redFF is another one that is basically playing exactly like I'd expect him to as scum, posting mostly one-liners. His play this time looks similar to his AA play aside from randomly defending townies.

I don't like the last part of his post. He's basically saying "let's lynch into these 3 people because I said so. Honestly all it loos like is mafia Trying to control town/divert lynches. Bum, why not keep it between coag, amber and Palmar instead?
Because they are all scummy. Mig has been aggressive since he started posting, and he actually made a vote based on the cult thing, which I find absurd with all the amount of WIFOM surrounding that. Curu's initial posting was called out quick but it's a point to mention that he was doing it. Finding an excuse to not post anything relevant is a fantastic way to not be an issue. That's why I'm proud no one let him do it. That's why chezinu is difficult to play with, because you need to be able to read what people are posting.
And you redff, are scummy because

When did you 'figure this out'? I was extremely suspicious of you ever since that post, because I was still in the dark at this point. To come to this conclusion made me think you had something happen between night 0 and day 1.
But other then that I guess there are other good candidates. I definetly was trying to manage the vote because I still see we have no more then 2 votes on every person, and knowing everyone its going to be a massive shock when some last minute switches go down. Put some reasons down, then put your vote with it. Repeatedly posting someone's name in red does not make them scum. Though coag has been lurking so I guess I should shut up.
First you call me scum based on my pre-game cult thing

#vote: Palmar
And then you say it's not scummy.

Awesome!
Oh if you actually don't think it's scummy (why the hell do you vote someone who you don't think is scummy?) Then your entire argument is "his activity changed", something I've already cleared up in the thread.
Only 40 minutes left. All the votes should be consolidated between amber/palmar/coag. It will be too easy for the mafia to swing the lynch otherwise. And random votes on trotske/myself/redff aren't going to do any good anyway.
Amber's inital reason for voting palmar was super shady. I like his 2nd post against palmar tho. And meta wise the 2nd post against palmar was better than any of his posts he made in AA as scum. I also don't think they are Amber/palmar are both mafia bussing each other. So since I also think palmar is shady I am more inclined to think amber is town.
Considering we've 3 people tied at 2 votes so close to the lynch and there's little to no activity, either they are all town or this really is a strange setup and there are fewer than 3 scums currently. Even if there were only two, they could probably get a townie lynched.
Oh wow didn't realize the voting ended mid-day. Good thing I checked back in time. Are people around? I'm not sure I like the three main candidates. Do we have enough votes to switch to someone like Curu if necessary? He is promoting a policy lynch, without much explanation, and has put little effort compared to what I'm used to.

Amber is getting lynched as of right now with three, but I think mafia is too scared to change their votes, unless trotske has balls of steel. I think amber dying will bring a lot to the table, especially with votes this tight. But I'd rather have one of the three I listed get lynched. So I'll vote curu as well, amber is a good player and can be useful.
You're making a mistake kitaman. A dreadful, dreadful mistake.
Vote Coagulation.
And it does have a reason. I shot Coagulation in AA for the exact reason. He's never a bad lynch since he won't post anything.
Day 1 with a cult type mechanic is pretty much a random lynch anyways since no one is going to be defending anyone else. Might as well lynch Coagulation!
But if you do kill me I'll be giving my item to Mig because he's a bro. I breadcrumbed what it actually is too, but it's a fairly useless item from what I can see.

I don't see why Curu would have been recruited to a cult on n0. At least there is a chance with Amber/coag. Assuming that even is the setup, it's really hard to make informed decisions when we know nothing about the setup at all.

its funny because the first person I Wanted lynched was Curu because he has been pushing a lynch on a afk person the whole game even during n0. so I don't mind lynching him but at the same time I feel like this could be some giant switch by you and kita to save Amber by baiting me with a jib becasue you know I'm active.

Stop using the cult as an excuse not to vote for something. We shouldn't be worrying about that at this point. Curu, what have you contributed so far that coag hasn't? The only thing that's odd is that coag hasn't aggressively defended himself.

You stand in a circle, looking directly at one another. None can be trusted.
Brightness falls from the air, dropping dead as darkness spreads. The sun wanes. The clouds fly high above the castle. Your eyes, they are useless. A chill sends up your spine. A flicker of light appears from a candle in the far east side. Who lit it? High Priest? Why only one? You move over, hoping for more light, more protection from the black unknown. A circle forms once again.
You know what you must do. You stand eye to eye with your comrades, with your enemies. Just vote. Take that hand and point it. Yes! Let the blood be spilled!
A plurality forms. It is pointed at Amber[LighT]. The last wisp of light dies.
The group forms a circle around Amber[LighT]. He chuckles and it quickly turns to hysterial laughter. You watch in horror as his jaw drops revealing long fangs and a serpents tongue. Black mist rolls out slowly from his mouth, enveloping the room in a thick black fog. The group tackles him to the ground. Hellish screams emanate from his gaping and inhuman maw. One member produces a large hunting knife, plunging it deep into his heart. He screams and his body begins crumbling into ash. Black ghostly figures rush from the ash, emitting the screams and wails from your deepest nightmares. You want to run to your room, but your body won’t move! God. Oh God, just keep them away from me.
A chant starts. “Et surgat Diabolus. Et surgat Diabolus. Et surgat Diabolus! Egredere, magistri, et festo in gloria tua!”
The candle flickers once more. You… you can move again. You look down. There lies the body of Amber[LighT] diminished to ash. The ash forms a sigil of the great demon Baphomet. In the center of the ash is the signet ring which marked the seal of your letter. So he was the high priest after all....
Despite this victory, you feel uneasy.
Amber[LighT] the High Priest of Satan has been executed
Night 1 has begun. You may PM me your night actions. Those who have a special puzzle may choose to submit a solution instead of submitting a night action. A new win condition has opened up.
Party Win Condition II: Solve all 5 day puzzles and maintain a majority over the Satanic Cult. The High Priest must be did for this win condition to come into place. Failing to solve a puzzle before the day ends twice in a row will negate this win condition.
It's a shame we don't get to see his role to confirm that he was a cult recruiter type. Still, I find it rather unlikely that the game started with a 3 player scum team considering how easily Amber got lynched despite the vote spread.
Before any trigger happy vig's try to go after me, consider this: Do you really think I would be so obvious to put myself on the line to save Amber, while leading the lynch against curu, who had zero votes? If I was really desperate to save him, we could have just plopped a vote on coag. If I was scum and I knew Amber would flip red, why would I got after Curu and risk trying to get 4 votes in less than 15 minutes. It does make me wonder why the scum team made no attempt to go after coag though.
Varpulis, if you think disclosing what your item is might help us solve your puzzle, go ahead and reveal it. Considering we lynched the high priest today, I don't think it could be particularly harmful.

I didn't intend you to disclose what the item does, just the name. If we've a medic, protect varpulis. While we currently don't have to eliminate the remaining scum to win, I'm guessing that if we fail at the puzzle solving win con we will have to. Protecting me isn't a bad idea either, considering I solved the first puzzle and it looks like scum can't win unless they prevent us from solving some of the puzzles.
I keep missing day 1 lynches too. It's becoming a problem.

I meant tomorrow irl lol, I'm at a friends house so I can't reread the thread and decide if you or kita are scum.
Eh I'm not sold on them being scum. I was being pretty useless but they would've probably hitched onto a Coagulation wagon or someone else with more votes instead of targeting me.

Curu, for the good of the town please either drop the coagulation bandwagon or come up with some actual reasons to kill him.
I'm quite suspicious of Mig. Before the game started he seemed quite interested in the setup, especially the puzzles, but now he has been fairly inactive and his late palmar vote and the lack of thread presence after that doesn't look like townie Mig.

You right, that does alleviate some of my concerns, though perhaps you thought I would switch with you. If Amber was a recruiter, who do you think he would have recruited on n0? I can't really make much sense of the voting patterns unless the other scum was someone who wasn't around for the lynch.

Coag/Bum
I think Bum is probably the scummiest considering his poor reasoning for voting me before combined with he was the 2nd one to follow kita in trying to last minute vote switch to curu. Coag is also likely to be scum, his day 1 play was scummy combined with there must be a reason mafia didn't put votes onto him to try and save amber.

If Coag is scum then Kita/Bum would both be possible. If coag is not scum there is a chance you could have been recruited.
The other possible scenario is, maybe he did recruit from the townies but didn't have a choice and it was random or pick 1 random 1, or we are wrong with what selection criteria amber used to decide who to recruit.
Overall Coag/Bum seems the most plausible scenario to me.

If Coag actually thought trotske was the scummiest there was plenty of evidence to push for his lynch, but he chose not to. So the reasons for that would either be A) coag is just lazy/useless town or B) he didn't actually want trotske lynched because he knew he was town and didn't want the backlash.

I don't even know what that means, usually I'm fully aware of it when I'm breadcrumbing.

the last line of my PM where the good intentions shit was made of three sentences the first was 6 words the next was 6 words and the last was 4 words happy?
I just want to reiterate that asking someone to quote a PM from a host directly or indirectly is cheating. PMs from this point forward will vary greatly from person to person, you would be wasting your time as it is.
You leave the solace of your room and return to the main chamber. The party regroups and after a while you notice Palmar is missing.
"Does anyone know where his room is? Perhaps he is still asleep." you ask. The man next to you nods.
"Yes, his room was right next to mine. Let's go check."
The party walks down the hallway and opens the door to Palmar's room. Everyone gasps in horror at the sight before them. Palmar has been decapitated, his head displayed proudly on the nightstand, turned toward the door. His body is disemboweled in bed, his arms spread wide and legs put together as though it were on a crucifix.
Palmar the Citizen has been killed.
The stench becomes overwhelming and you quickly shut the door. "When the time comes, we can give him a proper burial" you say with a deep sigh. The rest of the party nods their heads in agreement. Of course this means that the threat has not been eliminated yet. With the high priest gone however, your jobs should be considerably easier.
You walk out into the main chamber and up the stairs. The doors are now unlocked. It's time to face your next trial. You sense that the nature of this puzzle might be much more involved. The doors swing open into a larger lounge type room. There are six sofas, three on each side of the room. Small tables sit a few feet away from each red leather sofa and the wall is mostly bare except for torches that keep the room lit.
Across from the door at the other end of the room is a huge painting. You glance over it quickly.
There is an inscription beneath the painting.
And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.
There is a single door on the east side of the room. On it is written "Defeat death before you enter here." It is locked. There, however, is a keypad on the door with letters A-Z. This puzzle definitely seems more complex than the last one.
The day has begun. The nature of the puzzle has changed. You have 48 hours to submit solutions to the puzzle. As usual you must also vote on a candidate to be executed. Failure to vote results in modkill this time.
well, to be fair, i wasn't told explicitly that he took it, just that i lost the deck. Thing is, he came to my room for a smoke and the cards disappeared. I still got the result of my check on Coag though. He's not scum.

What say you, trotske?
Sigh, I would have preferred if you didn't claim trotske's identity, but I'll claim responsibility now before the town goes after him. I have the ability to swap items between two players. Originally, I was going to swap Palmar and a player I thought most likely to be scum. When you role claimed detective, I had a feeling you would be the person most likely to be hit so I moved the item to the person I had the strongest town read on based on the day one lynch, hoping to hide the location of the cards. Now that you claimed who has them again, they will probably have to switch hands once more.

hold on curu, if the thread can come up with a better guess, you can use ours. There is no sense submitting a guess, unless you're pretty sure it could be correct.
Well you've got 9 more tries after mine if it fails. But I can wait if you think we need to make use of all of them.
How I came up with the answer, there's a murder mystery called The Pale Horse, in it Pale Horse used thalium poisoning to kill, cure for thalium poisoning is Prussian blue.

I find it rather unlikely a satanic cult would have the answer be any of those. Also the part where it says the puzzle might be "more involved" and there being 6 sofas is interesting, though I'm not sure how that could in any way relate to the password.
as an aside i went to vampirefreaks cause i was following this hilarious youtube account "gothickingcobra52' but it got deleted so i looked for him on google and found his VF so i made one to try to talk to him and i figured i might as well have fun with it and then my friends signed up but it ended up being boring oh well i got a lot of messages from angry justin bieber haters though FOCUS ON THE GAME PLEASE
Err so DrH's profile has a link to his blog and there is a link that leads to this text, but that is where I got stuck. Does this mean anything to anyone?
Near the top of the page there is a link that says "Did you come here from something" and then there is a page that asks "what numbers did you need again?" and the 8th d has another link that leads to that text.

Admire your effort, but you strang together two posts that were refering to other people. I said you had balls for switching to amber after the half/hour mark. And then you're over complicating something as simple as "I don't think this guy is town. so I'm voting for him". I still think curu is scum, and the fact that amber was doesn't lessen that. I think that's rather plausible considering the circumstances.
Curu and Amber didn't vote for each other until the last possible minute. There is a point where analysis becomes WIFOM. I think that last paragraph of yours was getting pretty close.

Statistically speaking, in a 13 person game to have 3 townies vote another townie off while not incurring additional votes is very unlikely. Amber wasn't making too many friends with what he was saying.

1. You were kidding around pre-game with your cult nonsense to draw out some people. Your most detailed post was one that didn't even matter to the game:

This game you're not being so active. Your post count is a bit lower than normal, and I'm wondering why you're being so reserved. You weren't working on the puzzles the whole time, were you?
So Palmar I'll ask you:
What should we do about items? Should we disclose them or hide them from public view? Why?
Are there any details about your room that you didn't disclose?
In small games, player to player relationships often decide the outcome of a game. It's much more difficult to convince individuals who you will have to respond to directly, rather then a large game, where your contributions are appreciated, but a lot of the time unnoticed. If amber popped town, we would not be able to ignore the people responsible.
I have some theories, but I think it's easiest to say palmar's death is extremely self-explanatory; Anyone who helped kill amber is able to be trusted, and the likeli-hood of a bus is small, the lynch was not organized from what you could tell.

Mig, Curu, or redff are all viable picks, and we should probably keep it between these three unless someone feels otherwise.
this post is one of the reason's I think Bum is scum. he posts this saying that we need to consoladate our votes but at the same time saying that curu is a viable pick who at this point had only my vote on him which I switched soon after. While I will agree that when he said curu was viable there was my vote on him when he later switched his vote to Curu there was no votes on Curu. and also he tried to get me to switch my vote back to Curu after I had shown that I would vote for him earlier.
I think Bum tried to get Curu lynched becasue he thought I would take my vote off of amber and onto Curu becasue.

ROFL you say I was hurting the town by tunneling a guy who is a great policy lynch when you've been doing nothing but trying to tunnel me all game.
We should keep the lynch between Bum and Mig today and DT check the other. Curu isn't cleared, but I think he was in a better position to save Amber, which definitely would have been worth the risk if he was a recruiter. Mig still doesn't appear to be caring about the game and once again putting no effort into solving the puzzle, which goes against his plans before the game. Bum seemed curiously against the idea of there being a cult, while there actually was an abundance of evidence hinting towards it. He even went as far as to suggest that Mig is a good day 1 candidate purely because Mig considered a cult to be likely in this setup. Yet, his reluctance to vote for Amber was purely based on him considering Amber a good asset to town, despite him lurking most of the day. Being wrong or contradictory isn't something reserved to scum, but I still find the reasoning suspicious.
Based on voting, it's quite difficult to see which one is more likely scum. Both had at certain point a chance to save Amber, but Trotske cast the deciding vote with only 35 minutes left and at that point no single vote switch was enough to save him, unless the switch was away from Amber. Mig had just switched from Coag and earlier stated that he found Amber/Palmar/Coag suspicious, so he was pretty much stuck voting Palmar or Amber. Similarly, Bum had wanted to keep the lynch between redff/curu/mig, and indeed he switched to Curu as soon as someone else expressed interest. Bum put more effort into getting people to switch away from Amber, but not enough to look criminating by itself.
I'm still assuming there were only two scum because otherwise the lynch makes little sense, unless the third one was basically afk the whole day.
I gave up on the puzzle as I'm strongly disliking the lack of direction and framing. Basically everything in Bum's profile/blog could be related to the puzzle and I'm not getting anywhere with just the pastebin material. It's not even clear what in the day post is related to the puzzle and what isn't.
I submited "runand" becasue I wasn't getting anywhere with it and in the day post there were 6 sofas DRH went into a lot of detail about which seems like extra info we didn't need.
I don't see why the answer would be directly related to anything in the pastebin because it suggests that it merely leads to another URL address rather than the answer

That would be more helpful if we knew what it relates to at all, how to use said numbers and what the book is. I suppose it's likely the book of reveleations, but nothing really stood out in it. Perhaps Curu is on the right track with 6:8 though.
Yea we are definitely missing another step in the puzzle. There is another website needed to find the solution. I worked on it for awhile and I tried to see if there was any connection with the artist who painted it, john haynes or john hamilton mortimer, but couldn't find anything connected to them.
I have a tournament starting tomorrow so I am not going to be around for most of today and most of tomorrow. Bum looks to be the best lynch considering he A) didn't vote amber and B) the reasoning behind all of his votes were poor.
Try as I might, I can't rationalize mig switching off of Coag and onto palmar if he was scum.
Bum, on the other hand, is very suspect.

The final scum player concedes. Party wins the game.
Roles: Citizen - Vanilla Townie. Can hold 1 item. All players except kitaman27, syllogism, bumatlarge, mig, and amber[light] were citizens. Thief - Can steal an item at night. Syllogism. Trickster - Causes two players to switch items. Kitaman27 High Priest - Godfather/Roleblocker. Chooses 2players to recruit on Night 0 and never recruits again. Spawn of Satan - Mafia Goon
Items: Syringe - Medic. Rifle - Dayvig Knife - Nightvig Notebook - Weak Mason. Crystal Ball - Provides puzzle clue. Tarot Deck - Alignment Checker. Works on High Priest only if the tarot puzzle is solved after which the High Priest will return the Devil card instead of the Justice card.
I will make an audio post explaining the puzzles and the game. I will also post a survey I'd like you to fill out.
Haha I suck so hard as mafia. Hate mafia! I wouldn't normally concede but I am going to be gone for the next 1-2 days and a ton of townies who are either confirmed or close to it.
The setup looks very town favored role wise, but I suppose the penalties for not solving puzzles could balance it, and we didn't have time to rely on the roles anyway
BTW I'm pissed. I used my weak anonymous Mason power to send this to kitaman:
Diary: day 6
This hell persists around us. The sick stench of blood and gore pervades the halls as our assailants seek us out. Entering this castle was our worst mistake, for we had entered into the seventh circle of Hell itself. My companions stare wild eyed, some unbelieving that I would take the time to write this piece in our short reprieve.
We hide now in one of the rooms, but there is no way out. We are trapped, the sounds of the beasts prowling outside more terrifying than anything I could have imagined.
And I harbor a secret from my companions. The small bite on my thigh, hidden carefully from view. What I first dismissed as merely a glancing wound seems to be so much more. I can feel my blood clot as it thickens, and half my teeth have already sharpened to fangs. Thoughts of cannibalism enter my head unbidden and lately it has been ever harder to dismiss these thoughts. But I suppose it couldn’t be considered cannibalism anymore; I am no longer sure I am even human.
The urge rises but only my writing can distract me. But it is becoming so hard…so hard…just a bite can’t hurt. Just a taste of that sweet flesh. I thirst. I hunger. I can resist no more…but I must, I must, I must, I MUST, I MU
To try to get everyone to lynch Coagulation. Blood clot = Coagulation get it? Ha ha ha...

Two things are very important in the day post. The inscription (Revelation 6:8) and the filename of the image (findthecreators profile). People figured out quickly this means my profile which contains a link to my blog and the word MPHSTPHLS. This will be important later.
Are you looking for something
Clicking "are you looking for something leads here.
gossipgeisha.tumblr.com/dead
The 8th D contains a link to a pastebin. Also relevant is the clue below.
what are the numbers where you read it there is NOTHING to find here.
The numbers were you read it are 6:8. The inscription is Revelation 6:8, so this is signifying the significance of those numbers. NOTHING is a clue that is relevant later. But going to http://gossipgeisha.tumblr.com/nothing provides an additional clue.
The numbers you need. 6 and 8. Combines to create runandprayformercy. This is not the solution. Look at the bottom. "you will find the URL". this is a URL for another tumblr.
runandprayformercy.tumblr.com
A password? Ah. Well I imagined people would try things such as "death" "palehorse" "runandprayformercy" "nothing" etc. However the keyphrase is indeed....MPHSTPHLS, the cryptic and seemingly irrelevant phrase in my profile.
It is the same business here is the clue. What did we do on the last blog? We went to /dead, so we do the same here.
When referring to numbers we know we are talking about the verse of the inscription. Going back by three takes us from revelation 6:8 to revelation 6:5 which describes the SCALES that is held by the rider of famine. That is what he is holding. So we go to /scales
At this point the player is supposed to recall the reference to nothing on the first blog and go to the /nothing page which tells you to look closer at the music. The ID3 tags of the song contain the solution, HELEL spelled in a simple alphabet code.
Bleh, I tried runandprayformercy, but just not as an additional tumblr page, just the extension. Maybe should have tried that, but I'm not too familiar with tumblr and thought everything would follow the same format. T.T

That's like Notpron level stuff, and each Notpron level took me like a week or so to solve after the easy stuff.
In this game, solving puzzles and riddles will be vital to the parties progress. This is not a typical game of mafia.
It's a mafia game, but people signing up already knew that there would be a strong emphasis on riddles and puzzles. I don't see too much wrong with that. :p
It's also funny, because I actually had the first two puzzles mostly solved.
I had a notebook I brought camping with me, and it probably looks pretty weird if you didn't know what it was for, because the first page is full of codes and stuff, haha.
I had "Inno a", but didn't know what to do with it, because I couldn't really search stuff easily, and then I did the second one with just LvithN instead of Leviathan.
I liked the puzzles, a lot, I'm *so* excited for haunted now ^_^
I think the difficulty level might have ramped up a little too quickly though, it went from simple cyphers to extremely complex url hunts, I suggest increasing the difficulty more gradually, especially with limited time/tries to solve the puzzles.
(I will be... upset... if I haven't made the time to play mafia by the time Haunted rolls around)

Ha ha ha...
kitaman didn't even post it. Grrrrrr.
lol sorry. I actually didn't catch on to the blood clot clue. I just figured it was flavor text hinting at a second vampire themed recruiting role. I didn't want to post anything immediately because the only thing that would do would discredit any of the people who came out looking pro-town after the day one lynch. Instead I was going to wait and see if anyone had a drastic change in playing style or happened to mention a vampire related role. Also, apologies for trying to get you killed last minute. However, it was clearly just a ploy to trick bum into outing himself as scum :p
Thanks for hosting DrH. Looking forward to the real thing ^_^
I liked the intense and extremely well written day/night/event posts. They gave the game a unique atmosphere.
I didn't really like how difficult the puzzles ramped up to be. They were reasonably easy day 1, but made the jump to unsolvable far too quickly.
I'd remove the weak mason because I don't see a real use for it, despite it being a great opportunity to roleplay. either that or Jaedong dying. That was a little too intense for me
I'm not sure if I'd add anything, actually. If anything, possibly an item which can cause one to become corrupted (making them scum) if used too much. that'd be cool and fit the theme well.
I think it's relatively balanced, as long as there aren't too many blues (ppl with items). Were all items used?
What did you like most about the game? Puzzles! And the atmosphere, the horrific atmosphere was well done, and the puzzles were fascinating.
What did you like least about the game? Having to scumhunt, I know its a game of mafia, but I have difficulty focusing on two things at once, I can either find mafia or solve puzzles, not both, and I found I had no reads because I was more interested in guessing possible urls than in figuring out people's alignments
If you could remove something from the real haunted game, what would it be? Recruiting mechanics, just have peoples alignments be predetermined, having one player pick his team seems sort of unfair, I can only imagine what would happen in the real game when the mafia team consisted of BC, RoL, Ace and LSB
If you could add something to the real haunted game, what would it be? PM's. I feel like people being able to discuss the puzzles privately would be a *huge* addition
Do you think this game was imbalanced in favor of town or mafia? Honestly not sure, leaning town, as I feel that they may have had a little too many PRs, but that could be in part influenced by their loss of the Cult leader day 1
Were the puzzles too easy or too difficult? too easy at first then too hard in the end, a better balance between the complexities would have been helpful, or more time to solve the puzzles
Additional Comments: <3 awesome idea, and I'll be sure to play in haunted ^_^
lol it's a good thing the qt people werent in the game . So drh do I get MVP? I lynched amber, killed bum and I knew mig was the last one (if you don't believe me I'll post the analysis I did).
What did you like most about the game? The flavor text was probably the best I've ever seen in a mafia game here. Great job with that! The puzzles were fun and the second one was definitely challenging.
What did you like least about the game? It ended too quickly
If you could remove something from the real haunted game, what would it be? One problem with the puzzles was that it completely shut down discussion for actual scum hunting. It worked out in the end for town, but the day one lynch results would have been a nightmare if Amber flipped town. Arguably, discussing the puzzles could be considered a mafia tactic, but perhaps removing the puzzles from the day phase, and instead putting them in a puzzle/night phase would make it seem more like a mafia game.
If you could add something to the real haunted game, what would it be? If you plan to continue the theme with the items, maybe more variety than the standard medic, vig, dt roles. Also, needs more Vampires :p
Do you think this game was imbalanced in favor of town or mafia? Clearly imba for town since we had Meapak. I liked that both scum was recruited on night zero. The biggest problem with recruiting-like roles seems to be that its much more difficult to scum hunt when the player thinks they are town for the first half of the game. It also is more of a headache when your most pro-town player could likely end up as scum the following cycle.
Were the puzzles too easy or too difficult? The biggest problem was it was sometimes difficult to tell what was being asked. For example, with the leviathan puzzle it wasn't really clear that a number solution was needed, but maybe that was the intention. The second harder puzzle was interesting, but it seems like everyone got stuck at the same point. Something like the puzzle clue item might come in handy as a safeguard against a complete standstill.
What did you like most about the game? The day/night posts. They were very well written and I thoroughly enjoyed reading them. The puzzles were also a lot of fun to think about even though I weren't in the game. What did you like least about the game? - If you could remove something from the real haunted game, what would it be? The weak mason mechanic. I don't think it serves any purpose. Also, I kind of agree with GM that the recruiting function can be a bit imbalanced, but I still think it fits the game theme very good so I don't know if I'd like to have it removed. If you could add something to the real haunted game, what would it be? - Do you think this game was imbalanced in favor of town or mafia? I won't comment on this one since I don't know jack shit about setup balance. Were the puzzles too easy or too difficult? The last puzzle (with the pastebin and all that) was too hard in my opinion. The other ones were okay (or perhaps a bit too easy).
What did you like most about the game? Puzzles were awesome. The Flavor text was amazing too. I liked the fact that we all got separate flavor pms. What did you like least about the game? I don't really like recruitment as a mechanic tbh. The problem was that people were recruited n0, so it was obvious recruiter would have just recruited the best players :/ If you could remove something from the real haunted game, what would it be? recruitment. If you could add something to the real haunted game, what would it be? maybe add clues to the pms we all get, so as a town we have to combine our pms to solve the puzzles. Do you think this game was imbalanced in favor of town or mafia? It was fine, I just think it hurt losing High priest day 1. Were the puzzles too easy or too difficult? The First puzzle was perfect. As the game progresses I think puzzles should get harder. Day 2 puzzle would have been good for day 3/4 in a small game, but the learning curve was too high. In a larger game obv puzzles should be more difficult from the beginning. Additional Comments: Sucks that scum got so owned was looking forward to more flavor text/puzzles.
What did you like most about the game? Extremely well written, good atmosphere, picking Mafia team was cool (but can be unbalanced).
What did you like least about the game? YOUR GODAMN BLOG. Please put a NSFW warning next time, I opened your blog to your gory background in class and was lucky as hell I happened to be sitting in the back row.
If you could remove something from the real haunted game, what would it be? Once again NSFW pictures or put a warning if you have to use them.
If you could add something to the real haunted game, what would it be? Longer days. It's very hard to put your attention on clue solving and scum hunting at the same time, especially if everyone is just discussing clues. Maybe make 48 hour deadline to solve the puzzle, after that another 24 hours of day just for discussion.
Do you think this game was imbalanced in favor of town or mafia? Fairly balanced I think, Town needs to be a bit stronger than usual because not solving puzzles seems like it'd have bad effects.
Were the puzzles too easy or too difficult? I think you really have to judge your player base. If you have a game full of Mr. Wiggleses, you can make them as complex or whatever as you want. With the player base in this game, where half the people didn't even put in effort to solve puzzles, definitely too hard.
Actually I think a 48 hour night in which to solve the puzzles might be a great solution to the scumhunting vs puzzlesolving dilemma, since nights are usually pretty quiet anyway
We really should have organized better. I spent so much time trying make up a random roundabout way for town to not lynch amber without actually talking about amber, but syllo and trotske picked up on it. I didn't think amber looked that scummy day 1, I was very surprised he got pushed instead of mig, who I was prepared to bus all the way. Didn't want to bus our high priest, especially with the headstart the real townies like meapak and palmar got.
Should have killed syllo, but we would have had to kill so many different people who were virtually townies already, that we didn't want to start with someone who was not necessarily town.
If you could remove something from the real haunted game, what would it be?
If you could add something to the real haunted game, what would it be?
Do you think this game was imbalanced in favor of town or mafia?
Were the puzzles too easy or too difficult?
Additional Comments:
I liked seeing the puzzles, seeing how easily town solved the first one, and how crazily you ramped up the difficulty. It made me chuckle. Also, I liked the recruitment dynamic. :p Theorizing about that was fun...
I didn't like that I was a poor co-host who did nothing, hahaha.
Nothing.
Semi-open set up.
To be honest, I think it should have been in mafia's favor except they played poorly.
Lol. Never attempted.
Fun game to spectate. Seemed fun to play too. Can't wait come halloween. XD
GG Everyone, nice to actually just play vanilla town for once, although getting shot was less nice.

What did you like most about the game? I loved the atmosphere it created, I really have almost nothing bad to say about this game. The roles were interesting, the puzzles are for obvious reasons very hard to balance, but still were very fun. The setup was good, I love the mafia mechanic of recruiting their team. All in all one of the better mafia games I've played.
What did you like least about the game? Mafia shooting me
If you could remove something from the real haunted game, what would it be? Nothing, I like the format
If you could add something to the real haunted game, what would it be? Nothing really, the game was pretty great
Do you think this game was imbalanced in favor of town or mafia? the game was basically an f11 setup, but perhaps a bit town favored. Town won on analysis though, so it's hard to say, mafia just didn't play very well.
Were the puzzles too easy or too difficult? First one too easy, second one perhaps slightly to difficult. Remove like 1-2 layer of clues and you'd have had a perfect puzzle, also I'd like to agree with please keeping NSFW stuff out of our mafia games
I liked the atmosphere/flavour created by the roles and general background/themes of the game. I also enjoyed the inclusion of puzzles.
I also liked the idea of inventory and inventory spaces.
What did you like least about the game?
I didn't particularly like that players were only given one chance to solve the puzzle, but depending on the amount of players, it might be necessary, to keep town from having too many guesses. (That's why I liked the Day 2 puzzle, because you could keep trying).
Also on Day 1, it seemed like town had a lot of trouble scum hunting, because of the time split between puzzles and scum hunting, as well as not knowing the exact nature of their enemies.
If you could remove something from the real haunted game, what would it be?
Dunno.
If you could add something to the real haunted game, what would it be?
These aren't really things that I would all added to the game, but are just some brainstormy ideas I came up with while reading the game, and during downtime where I didn't have anything to do that I thought could be cool.
Having town continue until they solve all the clues. :p Killing all the mafia stops their KP, but town still has to escape the castle, right?
Multiple tries for clues. This would be useful, depending on the collaboration possible between players, as there are oftentimes where you have, say two possible answers, like the LvithN, Leviathan puzzle. If solving the puzzles gave more of a personal reward, then it would give players more of an incentive to submit multiple guesses than let others solve it, as they are not sure of anyone's alignment but their own (and because people are greedy). However, there would be safeguards against spamming answers, for example, using the safe puzzle, perhaps the second wrong guess delivers a mild electric shock that role-blocks the player, while the third gives them a lethal jolt, but they are not aware of these punishments until they are triggered. Then players won't spam answers, but are given a risk/reward dynamic for guessing multiple times if they think they have the answer.
A box item, or ambiguous items where the use is unknown until used. For example, "You found a box! It seems to be closed with a simple latch, and can be forced open with a little effort. Do you open it?", and then have a variety of things that could be in the box, ranging from useful items to a dark energy that corrupts the player and makes them evil. Open at your own risk. :p
A mafia as well as an evil power. For example, say the flavour is an expedition into some dark and ancient ruins, you could have the town, who are explorers and scholars, say two mafia who have less than noble intentions in wanting to kill everyone and loot the place, and a Demon-worshiper who knows what the ruins really are, and wishes to kill/convert everyone and re-awaken some dark power, and who would have limited recruitment and KP capabilities, and would win independently or with a cult.
Unique items and perhaps generic town night abilities. You already seemed to have done a good job with giving everyone different items, but it would be cool that even if people had similar powers their flavour and items would be different. For example, having a silver dagger and revolver both be KP items. This would go with the idea of generic abilities, which would be things such as ##Explore, which could give a chance to find an item or give a clue to the next puzzle, but also could get the player trapped in the next puzzle or something equally bad, or ##Investigate, which would give flavour into the actions of one other player that night. The drawbacks for that, would be the information could be somewhat open to interpretation. For example, a player could see that someone else was skulking around room to room trying to conceal a weapon if they had one and used it, or if they were exploring, or maybe that they saw a player covered in blood, if for example they had an item like "Dead Man's Blood" and used it, that protected them from the visits of the supernatural. They wouldn't be incredibly useful abilities, but could add some more flavour in, as well as fun for vanilla players.
Maybe a kind of insanity or corruption mechanic, that would be raised or lowered depending on certain actions. For example, players voting on a successful town lynch raises it, while lynching mafia lowers it, and similar triggers, killing a townie raises it, killing a mafia lowers it, though the actual points and thresholds would be unknown to the player. Then, if a player passed a certain threshold, they would trigger certain things, such as losing role powers, becoming insane third party, or maybe even conversion to the dark energies? I think something like that could be fun.
These are just ideas of stuff I thought could be cool to try, though I'm not sure how well they'd actually work in a real game (Or if they'd even be possible). :p
Do you think this game was imbalanced in favor of town or mafia?
I actually thought the game favoured mafia quite a bit in the beginning, with the focus on puzzles, as well as the massive confusion that not knowing anything about the scum caused. I guess that didn't pan out so well, though.
Were the puzzles too easy or too difficult?
I didn't think the puzzles were too difficult. It might be good to stick to the same format for puzzles that involve the URL though, because I wouldn't have thought of changing from just the extension to the actual blog, for example.
What did you like most about the game? Lynching scum and shooting scum all through analysis ^^ (everyone please note, this is the first time in the almost year I've been playing mafia that I significantly contributed to town victory, I'm gonna ride this for a bit )
But on a more serious note, flavor was AMAZING, easily the best I've ever seen, I'm eagerly anticipating the real haunted.
What did you like least about the game? I felt the puzzles detracted a bit from scum hunting. I understand that the goal is to incorporate puzzles but I feel as if they overwhelmed the scum hunting to a certain extent. Perhaps in a bigger game where there are more people the puzzles will share with scum hunting a bit... I just feel the balance between puzzles and scum hunting needs to be shifted a bit... not sure how you'd do that though. Keep in mind though, this is coming from someone with no aptitude for puzzles at all so that may make my opinion a bit biased.
If you could remove something from the real haunted game, what would it be? I'd make it more apparent how the scum are chosen, how the recruiter works. I joined this game not expecting it to be balanced because it was strictly experimental so the ambiguity with the recruiter didn't bother me too much. However in a bigger game that is supposed to be balanced I would like clarity regarding the recruiter... so I guess rather than remove the recruiter just explain the mechanics a bit more.
If you could add something to the real haunted game, what would it be? PMs! If you decide to keep the recruiter in it's current form the town would desperately need something to counter act that as over the course of a longer game people's alignments would become murkier and murkier. PMs would give the town something to blunt the edge of the recruiter and not make it so overpowered. Also PMs would make it much cleaner to discuss clues leaving the thread clear for analysis and scumhunting.
Do you think this game was imbalanced in favor of town or mafia? Underneath all the glam and the glitz, the setup really was pretty basic. Maybe there was one too many power roles but I think the onesidedness came from lynching the gf day one and day viging the strongest scum player day two. That's not due to the setup just good town play (:D told you I'd run with this for a while)
Were the puzzles too easy or too difficult? For me yes, but remember I'm not much of a puzzle person. I think if the town has people like syllo the puzzles were just right.
Additional Comments: I thoroughly enjoyed myself and I can't wait for the real haunted. Thanks for hosting DrH, it was a blast :D
What did you like most about the game? The Day/Night posts and general theme . Haunted Mafia really hooked me on Mafia because of its amazing day/night posts and im looking forward to more of that this coming fall.
What did you like least about the game? Game didnt go on long enough for me to answer this question honestly. It would be the length of the game that i didnt like lol.
If you could remove something from the real haunted game, what would it be? Items. They seem to be too minor to care for really. Then again, our data sample here is small.
If you could add something to the real haunted game, what would it be? Are there clues? I miss the clues in profile action
Do you think this game was imbalanced in favor of town or mafia? A game so themed like this would require more games or more study in the rolelists, etc. Also atm, town seems to get what they want in the first lynch but that doesnt really answer the question :S.
Were the puzzles too easy or too difficult? I'll be honest and ill say i gave up on them because im not a puzzle solver lol. The first one was solved really fast and the last one seemed to be mind boggling so ill say that.
What did you like most about the game? The mechanics you used. I know it might seem a bit town-favored with the loss, and the amount of powers, but those could easily get into town hands, what with mafia having a clue advantage of seeing what town figures out publically, and privately discussing and guessing as a group.
What did you like least about the game? EVERYTHING, jk nothing I can see, we screwed up and got punished rather immediately for it.
If you could remove something from the real haunted game, what would it be? Hm, if you use recruitment, that would become a huge topic of debate after the deed is done. I'm not sure how you would go about stopping a High priest from recruiting just big names, but I would need to see it in action. Perhaps making them pick between pools of people, or making it a bit more random. How about having each player submit a reason why they should be picked and base it off that? Not sure.
If you could add something to the real haunted game, what would it be? Nothing I haven't mentioned above.
Do you think this game was imbalanced in favor of town or mafia? Would need to see more samples, and I'd imagine the next one will be bigger.
Were the puzzles too easy or too difficult? First two were straight forward, then that last one blew my mind, but i thought I was on to something with the facebook profile thing with that picture. Just a coincidence
