There are many reasons why SKT are the favourites and it's definitely not only the old "SC hype" that carried over.Royal has a fair shot of course, but you shouldn't be surprised that many people would put their money on SKT. you would only have that perception if you played starcraft and only starcraft. Koreans may have dominated SC for about 10 years(way longer then the rest of the world cared), but china had dominated DOTA and WC3 during that time, and unlike SC which was largely unaccessible to foreigners outside of korea, china embraced the foreign community where non-chinese players/teams could shine and star. Edit: and let's not forget the CS circuit, which was dominated by EU for a time. Or JP w/ fighting games. the US is definitely the best @ Madden.

It's not even my opinion, and your assumptions that only people who "played starcraft and only starcraft" could come to this conclusion is quite ridiculous. Recently Thorin grilled 2GD where they discussed this topic and both came to this conclusion. Those are two people who are (in my opinion) very knowledgeable, and Thorin is often called the "esports historian". Their argumentation was simply that Korea never gave too much of a damn about these other games, but could have been the best in them, even CS. Given their background I'm sure you will have to agree that those are not people who "played starcraft and only starcraft". I myself am in no position to comment on all of these scenes, but those people I mentioned definitely are. It's still an opinion of course, nothing empirical, because that's impossible, so if you disagree that's fine. I simply put a lot of weight into their opinions, and you might not. ![]()

You can get very, very fucking good at the game through pubs, even if it's just 12v12 de_dust or office, and because of this, talent isn't that hard to find either. A lot of servers will have a couple really good people who play for several hours at a time, and they will top the charts round after round. Maybe a third of them would have the right attitude and motivation to join a competitive team, but the talent is there. 2. So much of the game is experience, reaction time, and instincts. Only experience can be trained/learned. Back in my CS days I wasn't anywhere close to good(I would occasionally top charts, but for the most part I sat around 1.5-2.0kd). You can play like god on occasion, but to do it round after round is something that is very, very difficult to do.

Whitez played the LPL MVP in the Ro8, entered an underdog, and won. Whitez played the EU LCS MVP in the Ro4, entered as an underdog, and won. Whitez played the OGN MVP in the Grand Finals, entered as an underdog, and ___. He might be too reckless, crazy, whatever, but he has beaten two MVP's in a row and dominated xPeke in lane last round. If he beat Faker in the Grand Finals, that would be pretty incredible. Would have slayed the three mid MVP's back-to-back-to-back. All he would have to do next is change to jungle and then kill Meteos to become the MVP Slayer.

I mean it looks good on paper like that, but Cool had a fine series, and Game 1 aside in the Fnatic series, Wh1t3zZ was definitely not the centerpiece to victory. I'd say I don't mean to discredit him, he's in the finals, but I guess in a way I do. His Kayle play was straight up awful, his team is beating the MVP's, not him.

I mean if the US cared as much about Starcraft or LoL as Korea does then they would easily dominate them in those e-Sports too (simply because they have way more people, and of course China has the potential to dominate everyone since they have the most people). It's not like there's anything innate to Koreans that make them better at e-Sports, they simply care more about them (invest more money, have a better infrastructure for scouting and nurturing talent, more competition among players looking to go pro).
