AP is generally equivalent to the midgame tempo hero while the AD is more lategame oriented, but the major difference is that the AP does mostly magic damage through abilities while the AD does physical damage through auto attacks. APs tend to vary a lot though, some like Karthus or Cass actually do a lot of damage over time while others do a lot more burst damage. ADs also have a similar scope of variety though when most people refer to ADs they're not talking about AD assassins like Talon and are instead referring to ranged AD autoattack carries. | ||

In LoL skills can scale with your attack damage (AD), or ability power (AP), meaning that your skills get better effect the more You have AP or AD. AD rise with levels (but different on different heros, ithems, runes and masteries. AP the same but not with levels. AP carry means a character that concatrate on rising his ap statiscs (and obviously some oare better to do this some worse). In current meta those kind of characters are played mainly in mid (sometimes top). AD carry exactly the same but with AD, in current meta played mainly on bot. | ||
