PS: WoW Arena takes quite a bit of skill, for example, countering a 1.5 sec cast time heal may not be too easy, and it has elements of "fog of war" but you hide behind the pillar instead to disallow others to cast spells on you. Definitely requires more than 50 APM, unlike what someone said. But I don't play WoW, my brother does.
I played WoW 2 years ago in season 2 as a Hunter in 2v2s and reached a 19XX rating. Back then Hunters sucked in 2v2s because we had to deal with the deadzone (A range between 5-8 where we can't melee or use our range weapon) and line of sight issues (exactly like you said you hide behind the pillars) which is why WoW arena is frustrating and unbalanced sometimes. You can imagine someone with logical sense would just keep kiting around the pillars against a hunter, which is why getting to 19XX with a hunter in 2v2s at that time must me I am a decent WoW player right? No not really its pretty easy game with a lot of retards, even though at the time arena sucked ass for Hunters the only reason I capped at 19XX is because I quit WoW, I know I could have reached higher. The point of this post I am saying WoW is easy and does not take skill as long as you are not a retard.
PS: WoW definitely requires around 50 APM because of global cool downs, after you use a skill there is a 1.5 sec cool down before you can use anything else. Also if counting 1.5 sec cast time is hard, try Guild Wars where you need to be countering 0.5 sec cast timers, =.= that shit is hard.

Most people that I talk to about it understand pretty quickly. I'm able to set people straight pretty easily if they say "oh there's no skill just ling rush" or "graphics suck" or "it's so old" or anything like that. People get it pretty quickly once I tell them about some of the intricacies of the game or about how it's the most competitive e-sport ever or about how it's the best-selling (individually game-for-game) RTS ever.

I met a guy once at a party like 1year ago that was into progaming and we talked a lot. Then this happened:
Me: "So where do you go to watch and follow progaming anyway? Teamliquid?" Him: "No, I'm really active on SC2GG. I barely go on TL I don't have an account there" Me: "Blasphemy."
He was a great guy so I tried to convince him to come on here, no idea if it worked since I never really saw him again after this lol

Virtually nobody plays Starcraft in England as it is essentially console-gaming nation. Here, the 360, Wii and PS3 rule. Unfortunately the PC is almost dead. In fact I honestly have never EVER met a RTS gamer in England.
I dont include the Chinese/Korean students by the way.

Actually, my family is pretty ok with SC, my dad and brother plays Protoss, but they only play in 3v4 BGH, 2 humans + AI vs 4 AI, they don't play competitively.
When my dad catches my play he often watches.
One time PvZ on Destination. I was at the bottom.
My sair takes cheapshots on overlords but hydras tell him gtfo.
Dad: I think you should really build cannons along the top of your base. Me: That would be a waste of minerals.
Sair goes back to taking cheap shots, ovie says fu with speed.
Dad: He's gonna drop your base. Me: No he won't the speed was for my sair.
I attack my first 1.5 control group of zealots + 3 templars A control group of ovies drops hydra lurk on my base.
Dad: Called it. Me: wtf....
I lost, tried to go for an elimination race but didn't have enough storms to kill off lurkers, can't defend with what supposed to be my reinforcements.

2 years ago, friends in college campus played CS on LAN. One of them: "there is one guy who asked about SC and plays it, no one likes him" :-)
recently they all switched to SC - team games on hunters with computers to balance teams. I gave some tips to one of them about walling in with terran and using ebay to extend tank range

I just explain it confidently and with real life words (as opposed to esport words) and I've never gotten any strange reactions.

In most cases, SC is too ugly/old for casual players who just want to be trendy, too hard/fast for average players, and too annoying for hardcore players (control-wise, which I agree with. But they do generally find the game OK). And then there's the problem with cheaters ("hackers") when playing on BNet.
WC3 is a huge lot more popular than SC here, and it's hard to make a case for SC other than the facts that a) 3 races are better balanced than 4 b) the craziest gamers of all (Koreans) prefer SC But the counter arguments to these are usually: a) can be made (almost) even with good map design b) it was the first game there and it's hard for ANY new game to take its place, regardless of how good it is ... and these are hard to argue against. I don't care about it anymore though, since I don't play any RTS anymore.

I tell them I'm playing the most badass game in the world, if they question it I tell them they're an idiot. I dont see what the big deal is.

2k+ as a resto shaman in 3s back in seasons 2-4 (when everybody bitched that shamans sucked) and 2k as a prot warrior on bg9 in season 3 and 4. 50apm is pushing it as a 1.5 gcd only allows for 40 actual casts if you cast on the gcd every time with 0 lag. If you cap your haste as a caster (terrible idea) you can get 60 casts per minute under completely ideal circumstances. arena is the only thing that resembles skill, but still nothing compared to any other competitive game. its 90% what comp you run and what comps you face, and the skill level required to do well is dropping with every patch.
Oh, and to not be too off topic, I actually had a glimmer of hope the other day. I mentioned to a friend of a friend that I was moving to south korea and their first words were "do you play starcraft?" He doesn't actually play but he told me I should be at home practicing instead of here so I'm in shape for when I go.

On s3 I was top 5ish on my priest in 5v5 and top 5ish on my druid in 3's. All my gladiator friends already quit the game for the same reason: the competitive part of wow completely suck. Balance suck. And skill means less than 10% of the outcome of the game like Idle said. Team composition and luck weight much more than player skill. So it gets old fast.
But most of them won't play SC because they find it boring and ugly. Unfortunately, simply being 'balanced' doesn't make a good game :O

Actually, most of my friends still play SC so I'm quite lucky in that regard. And really, who else would know about this? I play by myself in a room... it's not like I'm busting out my laptop in the middle of the bus to get a few 4-pools in on iccup

none of my friends play's sc. But most of them know about it and even know about korean pro scene. The guy who got me into playing quit a few years ago. He was quite good back then, on LANs I always leeched his rep folder and I remember he had some games against [pg] members that he won. And he won every single game we played. A few month ago we played some 40 games or so and I won like 35 of them. He's Zerg and I'm Terran and he never played against a fe -.-. One of my other friends switched to wc3 but quit a long time ago but he recently had the chance to go to another country for his company. He choose Korea but didn't get the spot he goes to Florida now . Anyway we plan a trip to korea in the next year or so and we will watch proleague all the time My girlfriend knows about my sc passion and on sunday evening when I bring her home I always ask her: "So what are you gonna do before going to bed? Read?" "Yes, and you? Watch gom?"
