Most people around me usually aren't surprised that I play StarCraft or video games in general (nowadays who doesn't play some sort of game?), but what surprises them more is that I created a website based on the game.

From my experience people aren't all that shocked when they see SC, but maybe that's because they can't even make the difference between SC and Chrysis. However, people think I'm joking when I say there are professionnal leagues and this game is a whole country's national sport. They're like: "no way there are channels that show people playing the same game all day long".

I've got to agree with so many posts in this thread: it's pretty funny when people think they're so great at a game they've never played against anyone else.
I remember seeing this guy(#1) show his friend(#2) WC3 on a laptop in my campus. I go to talk to them and #1 starts telling me he's really good (not in a arrogant "i'll whoop your ass" kind of way, but he just thought he was actually good), so I just believe him. Then after a few seconds I tell #2 he should use hotkeys to go faster... To that, #1 responds: "oh dude, even I'm not THAT good! You need to be a pro to never click on the icons"...

My GF thinks its funny. I did show her some Youtube of Korean Pros and she said she doesn't care. I told her that she better care if she want's to be with me. She tolerates it but doesn't like it.

Some of my friends actually got me into SC about a year ago, and now we all LAN about once a week if we have the time. Of course, that's only three of my friends. All the other ones either have never heard of it, or they can't believe that I'm playing a game that's almost as old as I am!

My friends and parents know that I'm pretty obsessed with SC, but with me is a hole different story, since I'm not playing the game for years now and still spend a lot of my free time for reading stuff in the community's web sides or making gfx images for them. So my parents are pretty neutral to this because technically I'm not playing a game, which in their eyes is good, but still waste a lot of time on smth that they find rather pointless. With my friends its the same thing. I'm trying to explain them all what this is all about, some of my friends are quite impressed and amazed when they find out what is happening in Korea, but the majority just reply "those guys are sick, you are sick as well"

Most of my friends at least acknowledge that SC is very deep and skill demanding. I usually don't talk about gaming with people who aren't gamers anyway, so I avoid a war of the worlds. I try to talk about other things with casual gamers who are too bull-headed to acknowledge the depth of competitive games, but they often turn out to be slow and stubborn in other areas too.

But yeah I've only met one gamer in real life who actually thought SC was a bad game. He kept trying me to play me in games like WC3 and SupCom (at least these games aren't as infantile as DoW) but I always rolled him like 20:1. His arguments were nothing original (look on the old MBS threads to see carbon copies), though one amusing retort he had was that SC wouldn't run on his system because it was 64 bit. Somehow I found the retort both spurious and condescending.

Pretty much everyone I know respects SC for the fact that it is such a fine-tuned and skill-demanding game, but very few actually play it because it's so unforgiving for beginners. I usually ignore fools that don't understand the complexity of SC; they're the type that will never learn, so why waste the effort?
A sound mind in a sound body, is a short, but full description of a happy state in this World: he that has these two, has little more to wish for; and he that wants either of them, will be little the better for anything else.

I never bring it up. But when I was younger, and someone would find out I play SC at school, they'd challenge me and I'd be like 'Ok.' When we played I'd totally rape them doing something stupid like Maxing out on marines and then attacking just because I knew if I actually tried they'd get pissed losing in 3 minutes... Which was fine and dandy. But the next day they'd talk about it at school and talk to like the 5 or 6 other people that are also SC noobs saying how many marines I got and I'd be thinking 'Boys boys... There are ladies present.' I'm pretty sure any girls who overheard I was really good at a computer game weren't getting wet.

Other than a friend who knows I play SC bringing it up... It never comes up.

its because PC gamers hide, because PC gamers hide.

Ever PC gamer thinks they are alone because all the PC gamers around them also think that they are alone, its not like we English are renowned for being forward in these matters, I've never once asked anyone if they play Starcraft, in the same way no one has ever asked me if I play Starcraft, the way it works is similar to a hostage situation, someone posts posters for a a LAN, and people only really turn up because they know other gamers are going to turn up.

People don't discuss games in convo much unless they know that the other people are gamers, so we have to improvise with other means.

I played WoW 2 years ago in season 2 as a Hunter in 2v2s and reached a 19XX rating. Back then Hunters sucked in 2v2s because we had to deal with the deadzone (A range between 5-8 where we can't melee or use our range weapon) and line of sight issues (exactly like you said you hide behind the pillars) which is why WoW arena is frustrating and unbalanced sometimes. You can imagine someone with logical sense would just keep kiting around the pillars against a hunter, which is why getting to 19XX with a hunter in 2v2s at that time must me I am a decent WoW player right? No not really its pretty easy game with a lot of retards, even though at the time arena sucked ass for Hunters the only reason I capped at 19XX is because I quit WoW, I know I could have reached higher. The point of this post I am saying WoW is easy and does not take skill as long as you are not a retard.

PS: WoW definitely requires around 50 APM because of global cool downs, after you use a skill there is a 1.5 sec cool down before you can use anything else. Also if counting 1.5 sec cast time is hard, try Guild Wars where you need to be countering 0.5 sec cast timers, =.= that shit is hard.

2k+ as a resto shaman in 3s back in seasons 2-4 (when everybody bitched that shamans sucked) and 2k as a prot warrior on bg9 in season 3 and 4. 50apm is pushing it as a 1.5 gcd only allows for 40 actual casts if you cast on the gcd every time with 0 lag. If you cap your haste as a caster (terrible idea) you can get 60 casts per minute under completely ideal circumstances. arena is the only thing that resembles skill, but still nothing compared to any other competitive game. its 90% what comp you run and what comps you face, and the skill level required to do well is dropping with every patch.
100% truth. On s3 I was top 5ish on my priest in 5v5 and top 5ish on my druid in 3's. All my gladiator friends already quit the game for the same reason: the competitive part of wow completely suck. Balance suck. And skill means less than 10% of the outcome of the game like Idle said. Team composition and luck weight much more than player skill. So it gets old fast.

But most of them won't play SC because they find it boring and ugly. Unfortunately, simply being 'balanced' doesn't make a good game :O

Funny when you talk about WoW, koreans are pretty good in that aswell (no suprise). I remember half a year ago there was this Arena tour during some big lan event. And the best PvP team (Nihilum PvP) went against some korean team. Eventually Nihilum team lost, and after that game, commentators asked how they felt etc, and they were like "there are way better arena teams in korea, we were just lucky to get qualified to this tour".

During LANs, my most people dont want to play SC only cuz they know they will get owned. And that when they dont, their games take FOREVER, and they cba to play SC cuz of that. Basically what killed SC in my neighbourhood.

Do you also remember how warrior / druid / lock was completely dominant for months over all the much more "skilled" korean rmp teams? The game is not built for extremely high level play. There were even endless jokes that the reason the korean teams didn't dominate was because the gcd hindered their apm.
I'd turn gay for Baby.... wait, that came out wrong.

meh, i know about 5 people in real life that play iccup, in my city.

people i play starcraft with react by telling apm jokes.

people that dont play sc but play a variety of other games say " how can you not get bored of playing only one game?" And also make a graphics statement sometimes.

and people that dont play games have very varied reactions, all depends on their personality and relation to me i guess.

I'm slowly converting my friends to SC. Most of them still have the game from before and we play occasionally and I made some of my other friends buy it.

I'm slowly preaching in SC into my friends, making sure they better play SC2, at least

DotA guy : Wow you're a genius to be able to solve this question.

Me : Of course! you know why? It's cause i play brain stimulating games like SC!

DotA guy : *laughs* Starcraft sucks la!
