My argument is that there are more assholes per capita in gaming because a higher percentage of social rejects become hardcore gamers than the population as a whole.

You do understand that parents shouldn't have to "beat manners" into their children right?

The internet is the most democratic medium available to us, and that carries all its consequences, good and bad. Politeness is one of the casualties of mass empowerment.

I don't have a lot of experience with other games and their online communities, but as a general rule the average would-be-competitive sc player (D+ to C+, the range I have the most experience with) is waaaay more bm than the average go player (the only other game I play regularly online). There's exceptions to this in both games, of course, but the chances of me running into someone like HovZ are much, much greater in starcraft than in go.

I think you people are being a bit bias. I have met as much of a percent of asshole 21 year olds as I have 12 year olds on online games. Hell the percent of asshole 40 year olds is about the same.

This is my theory...

12 year old comes onto online game and says, "Oh hi, how do you do x" in high voice

21 year old answers, "LOL, I bet your balls have not dropped" (or possibly says, "Oh press y to

x!")

Now either 3 things can happen

A. (most common)12 year old gets mad and starts acting retarded.
B. 12 year old gets mad and stops playing altogether
C. (least common) 12 year old is like, "fuck you, I will look it up" and becomes a respectable member of video gaming society

Branching off of conclusion A this happens:

The 12 year old fucks shit up further ruining the name of 12 year olds everywhere

the now retarded 12 year old turns 21 and forgets he once was 12 and completes the cycle

to make sure the system doesn't get overpopulated that 21 year old turns 40 and kills himself.

And then there are the few normal mannered people who play video games.

Like i have said before. If I knew I could get away with killing, burning, rapeing and pillaging i would. I basicly be a fucking viking if there was no law. Does that make me ass hole? I dont know really. I think its just what humans do. The internets just a world with no laws. So people figuratively kill, burn, rape, and pillage on the internet because thats what humans do.

I wonder what it's like with Korean online games. Hmm...I should ask someone.

in korea since u have to use formal language to strangers u meet (since by teenage yrs it's hard to tell whether or not they r older or younger than u, so every speaks really politely in game chats

I noticed this with the Japanese in FFXI too.

English player: "yo wanna join my party?"
Japanese player: "Sorry to bother you, but we would be honored to have you accompany our party, if that's not too much trouble."

It seemed so backwards for people to be significantly more polite and formal online than they would be irl.
Of course, you only live one life, and you make all your mistakes, and learn what not to do, and that’s the end of you.

I am sad and disappointed that this thread has not become an argument over what constitutes a "gamer"

Mainstream gaming communities = immature morons

Niche gaming communities = polite and respectful

I'm not sure why it works that way. You go play something really mainstream like halo and people call eachother names, insult eachother's mothers, they bitch, they whine, they're sore losers. You go play something like starcraft of quake live and people have honor codes. They never say anything disrespectful, they always say GG before and after games - the digital equivalent of a bow or a handshake. They're polar opposites. And it has nothing to do with age. I've played with SC and QL players who were 13-14 and they were as mature as grown adults.

I'd say it's mainly just b/c they are anonymous. If you meet most of these people in real life they are probably pretty normal. Also has to do w/accountability imo. Look @ TL, if there weren't bans, people would be a lot more unpleasant (though a lot of you guys aren't really pleasant anyway ).

I do agree though that a lot of gamers are assholes.

btw, at one point i found a BLM JP player talking shit about me in japanese in party chat, calling me a stupid paladin. i could read that much. he wasn't exactly a great BLM either as the rest of the party was part of my linkshell and would shit on him in LS chat.
