+ Show Spoiler + ![]() The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoyevsky has always been my personal favorite. + Show Spoiler + ![]() Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie is an amazing novel which won the Booker of Booker's prize. A contemporary masterpiece in case Dostoyevsky is too dated for you Much better than his Satanic Verses which made him famous.+ Show Spoiler + ![]() Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut, as anything by him it's bordering on insane but very entertaining and much more casual than the other two. Most the books already mentioned are definitely worthwhile, I'd just say not to set the expectations too high for Angels & Demons. Plenty people enjoy it but are disappointed compared to the Da Vinci Code. OP, if you liked the Stephen Colbert book you'd probably also love America (the Book). + Show Spoiler + Because without linking the cover it just wouldn't be cool. ![]()

Actually I'm reading the original novel form of my favourit film Fight Club. I'm at the half of the story, but I can tell you it's much more amazing then the movie. ![]() Two days ago I listened Barry Greenstein's voicebook, Ace on the River. I liked it very much, because it's not a dry and simply poker book about the percentages. You can hear (or read) many anecdotes about Barry's poker carreer. After Fight Club I'm gonna read again James Clavell's Shogun, it's an amazing book as well.

I like Tolstoi also (only red one book each :D). I like Orson Scott Card's style only if i only red Ender's game, Speaker for the dead and Xeonophobia. And other very popular books that have been posted many times. Also John Fowles: The Magician (the only book by him i red), Stendhal (especially Red and Black). There are some that i can't remember right now and some romanian authors with nice books that i doubt you've heard of. Besides i'm not a cassual reader (as someone said in this thread) i don't think i red more than 100books in my entire life ( sad yes?) Edit: almost forgot about the book is just finished yesterday. It's named "The confesions of an economic hitman" (not sure if the translation is ok since in romanian it's a bit different)

+ Show Spoiler + If you've read Palahniuk before, you'd probably like this novel. It follows his typical style and his often shockingly graphic descriptions and events. Oryx and Crake, by Margaret Atwood + Show Spoiler + ![]() Oryx and Crake is a post-apocalyptic novel that takes place largely through the memories of the enigmatic "Snowman." Snowman lives with the bizarre semi-human Crakers on a deserted beach. The Crakers seem to be the only other intelligent life around, which is explained slowly through Snowman's flashbacks as they follow him from childhood up to the novel's preset. Snow Crash, by Neil Stephenson + Show Spoiler + ![]() If you've ever payed attention to my posts in book suggestion threads, you've probably heard me say far to much about Snow Crash. Just go read it, right now.

I present two book series that can also be categorized under dark, merciless, "authentic" fantasy (not of such epic proportions and complexity as the Song, but different in a way that does not contradict their awesomeness) with an outstanding writing style such as displayed in George Martin's masterpiece. I skimmed through countless amazon user hitlists in search for books that could give me an equally worthwhile reading experience as "A Song of Ice and Fire" and found two which also got that certain "sense of star", to say it with the words of Kim Dong-Soo. A Song of Ice and Fire, by G.R.R. Martin (this is our starting point) ![]() >>>> The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle, Day 1), by Patrick Rothfuss (watch out - highly addictive!) ![]() >>>> The Blade Itself (The First Law: Book One), by Joe Abercrombie ![]()
