I think you're right. Russia wants to make sure Ukraine doesn't join NATO and is not officially anti Russian which it presumed Ukraine to be after the 20214 government overthrow. The only way to achieve it is by replacing the current government with Russia friendly/puppet government

Feels like they’re not helping their cause on the anti Russian front. If I wanted Ukraine to like me then I’d try to give them things other than missiles. But there’s no deal possible when Russia’s demand is conquest.

Yeah thats why it's do or die for Putin's Russia. Either win the war or surrender to the west/ break the country up into more pieces.
For Ukraine the deal is always possible. If Ukraine feels like they are about to collapse it's better to take whatever is offered currently than lose even more.
Although seems unlikely by zelensky
Looks to me that the war will continue and Russia will keep slowly inching forwards as it's currently doing.

No, Russia's goal is genocide. If you surrender to an opponent who's goal is your genocide you might as well slit your own throat, it would be less painful.
