Some script kiddie exploited some bug or something in AOL Instant Messenger and managed to log into my account and change the password. He started spamming people on my buddy list before I noticed the problem. I logged on to another screen name and tried messaging myself, to be met with talk of 'fuckfaces' and 'masterbation.'
After talking for a while I got him to send me the majority of my buddy list so at the very least I didn't lose all of my contacts. He said he would give it back to me if I gave him 45 dollars. I asked why the heck he wanted specifically 45 and he said another guy will sell him the screen name he wants for 45 dollars. I pretended to be willing to pay, and he had me IM the owner of the screen name he desired. The guy basically went back on the deal and didn't want to sell it.
Meanwhile I was trying to find a way to contact AOL regarding this matter, but they lack any non-automated support for non-paying customers. Eventually I found something: the user page for my screen name on aim.com had a link to report the content for being inappropriate. I clicked the link and filed a report explaining how the account had been hijacked and he was both using it to send inflammatory messages to members of the buddy list and extorting me for money. I gave them an e-mail address to contact me at which is also the one my screen name should be registered under (I verified this by finding an old e-mail in my archives identifying that my e-mail address for the screen name had been changed from my old one to my new one).
I am trying to convince the guy to give me back my screen name but he's being non-committal and is afk at the moment. Here's the strange thing... he claims to always be on a proxy, yet after our initial conversation, he's been messaging me from another screen name which I suspect might currently be his primary one. If so, at the very least I could piss him off.
I need advice with further measures I can take to try to recover my screen name. I would assume I can use my current e-mail address as evidence of ownership to reset the password, but I haven't found the option to do that anywhere. Please help, I really would like to keep my screen name.
Note - Moved from blogs section so more people will see it.

I don't see how he got your SN without you being careless.
This is why I use deadaim 4.5 with aim 5.5.3572 and have 2 names with buddy the same buddy list and clone aim feature owns as well as the copy/save buddylist.
See if you can log into your name@aol.com and request password change.

My SN is apparently highly desirable. I occasionally get random IM's from people like 'dude I just tried IMing you b/c I like this name'

Surely you have some other means of contacting the people that you really want to be in contact with? I would just get the names of the people you really want to talk to and make a new account.

Find a hacking program and try hacking it.

I am going to wait 2 days to give AOL's AIM team a chance to respond to my inquiry. If nothing happens, I will release ALL information and encourage unsavory action be taken.

If you are getting some type of unique screen when you visit the above link i posted then your AIM name must have been associated with an actual AOL account at some point, or still is. Have you ever paid for AOL as an internet provider before? Your parents maybe?
I seriously doubt AOL is going to do anything to get your screename back, because everything you are telling them someone has already tried before, to steal account names. They get messages all the time from people trying to scam user information claiming that "someone stole my account, but i swear that I am the actual owner". Unless your screename is tied to financial records which you can use to back up your claims.

We have never had or used AOL so I don't know why it's doing that.
I understand that it could seem like I'm a scammer myself, but I actually have access to the e-mail address registered to my screen name so in theory I can prove it's mine.

I wonder if you know how naive that sounds. Anyway did he specify how he wanted you to pay him? It is easy after that.

The part about AOL or the part about releasing all the information I have? Also, he didn't want me to pay him directly... he wanted me to pay the guy directly that was selling the screen name. I tried to convince him to let me pay him directly but since he's only 15 he doesn't have access to internet finances yet :-/

so how exactly do you exchange a name/pass for money? Do you give him the money first, or does he give you the name/pass first, or what? Anyone know how this is normally done?

I will be giving all details like what the screen name is, what his other screen name is, what I think his real name is, his home city, etc, if I fail in my other attempts.

It'd be kind of funny if he reads this forum too

pretend to be an underage girl and send him "pics" of you filled with viruses. Fucks like these need a dose of their own medicine.

i know jack shit about it, sue me

Even if he blocks you, if you have the current version of AIM, you can remove yourself from his contact list, then msg him constantly (just dont accept him as a friend). This should annoy the fuck out of him as far as that goes.
But otherwise, you should be able to get your pw back through a file / complaint script and probably have it rerouted to you via e-mail. Otherwise you will probably have to find a hacker and or program to search out the password for you.
AOL is like Blizzard, they don't care.
|
blizzard does care :cries:

If he does in fact read this forum then he should be a bit compelled to return the sn. Being a fellow TLneter and all.
Actually what do I know, if that cellphone belonged to somebody on this forum idk if Charlie woulda return it or not. Lets assume he would have.

i'm very surprised you only have one screen name... considering its AIM (free)..
but for future reference, just make TWO (more if you want) screen names.. and save the buddy list, and then load it on both screen names... just incase its stolen again... or you forget the password etc etc..
