In many ways, I am sure getting the military involved in something involving illegals actually gets trump supporters jazzed. The t_d types love the idea of the rigid nature of the military being applied to immigration. Many would say it is a long overdue escalation.

What's funny is Trump is cutting off his nose to spite his face on the wall. He could get tons of funding for border enforcement if he just drops the 'wall' aspect. Realistically he can still get the best wall that Democrats and the MIc could come up with, it''s just not gilded with a casino in between the two countries.

I agree that people who are against immigration often don't even care about an actual wall being built; it can easily exist as a metaphor.
What do you mean that you can't name people? Just curious as to what one of the new mod actions is for this thread.

It is an effort to curb the calling out of people in the thread as the representative of some larger political group, heaping all the short comings of that group onto them.
The wall has always been in this mercurial thing that Trump threw around to get votes. It is yet another rorschach test of politics, where people see what they want in the "wall". The best part about it for Trump is that it can be used to blow up any deal he wants, claiming that the Democrats didn't give him the wall.

That'd be great if I believed he used it that way. I think he genuinely does want a wall, and a lot of his supporters definitely do.

Nowhere in the OP does it say this.
If people are going to get warned for random things that aren't listed, the mod really needs to edit the post and add a note to the warning saying what it's for. I wish TL did this in general, but it's even more important under an openly "subjective" regime.
It's even more confusing when you then go back and change the post so nobody has even the slightest clue what happened.

Trump wants the wall, that is obvious from his actions. The question is if his supporters really care about a wall itself. Or just harsh action against immigrants in general.

So Michigan had quite a surge of tea party candidates running for all sorts of things in 2016 with some success, and one of them just got kicked out of her office for having lied about where she lived.
A judge ousted Karen Spranger from office Tuesday, ruling she was not legally elected as the Macomb County clerk/register of deeds because she lied about her residency in her election filings.
"Because she did not reside in Macomb County, Spranger was not a qualified elector of Macomb County ... By law, if Spranger was not eligible to run for county clerk, she has no right to currently hold that office," St. Clair County Circuit Judge Daniel Kelly wrote in his 17-page order.
Kelly, who was assigned the case after Macomb judges all recused themselves, ordered that Spranger be immediately removed from office, ending a 15-month saga that one county official said turned the clerk's office into a "toxic" environment.
"I'm confident the judge's ruling is appropriate," Macomb County Board Chairman Bob Smith said. "The Board of Commissioners is ready to assist as appropriate or needed."
Spranger ignored questions from reporters as they followed as she walked for a couple of blocks from her office in the Talmer Building to the county parking garage, where she got into her car by herself and drove off. She was initially unable to get out of the gated garage because her county employee ID card had been deactivated, but then was let out by security.
Her departure came as county employees were leaving the county complex for the work day.
Under state law, Spranger's temporary replacement will be named by Macomb County Circuit Court judges and will hold the position through the November election, said county Corporation Counsel John Schapka. The deadline to file to run for the November election is in April 24.
Schapka said he was told the judges are expected to meet Thursday night and will decide on Spranger's replacement using a simple-majority vote. Spranger ran both the county clerk's and the register of deeds offices, and was in charge of overseeing elections in the county.
Fred Woodhams, spokesman for the Michigan Secretary of State’s Office, said the state agency won’t jump in, with Spranger’s departure, to help administer the upcoming elections.
“The Macomb County Clerk’s Office has an experienced elections division that is capable of administering its elections duties and has our full support,” Woodhams said in an emailed statement.
In its arguments before Kelly, the county contended Spranger should be disqualified from finishing her four-year term, claiming she lied about her residency when she filed her election paperwork Spranger listed a house on Hudson in Warren as her residence, but the county contends the house had no utilities and was uninhabitable, filled with "wall-to-wall garbage, feces and animals," court records show.
The county also cited Spranger's Bridge card expenses, arguing she only shopped for groceries in Wayne County using her Bridge card, even though the same stores were located closer to the Warren home she claimed to live in.
Spranger maintained that she was simply poor, but did live in the house.
The judge didn't buy it.
"All of the evidence presented by Macomb County is unrebutted," Judge Kelly wrote.
"She claims to have resided in Macomb County, but provides no documentary evidence to support that assertion. She clearly did not reside (on) Hudson, and yet she has not told this Court where she actually 'laid her head,' " Kelly wrote....

My original post said "xDaunt and Danglars started out firmly opposed to Trump" rather than "many conservatives started out firmly opposed to Trump"

It seemed really silly to me, since I don't recall this ever being made clear. But whatever, I am just happy this rule exists. There are people in this thread who aggressively harass other members and I am happy to see that ending.

Behind an annoying pay wall. To bypass, google the title of the article. I've done so and pasted it below:
SEOUL—The U.S. and South Korea agreed to amend their free-trade deal to address American concerns about a growing deficit and resolve friction over tariffs on South Korean steel, Seoul’s trade ministry said in a statement Monday.
The changes to the deal, which have been blamed by President Donald Trump for expanding the U.S. trade deficit, focus on rebalancing trade in the auto sector—a major source of South Korea’s trade surplus with the U.S., the ministry statement said.
Speaking on “Fox News Sunday,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the U.S. expected to sign the agreement with South Korea soon.
“South Korea will reduce the amount of steel that they send into the United States as part of this. So I think this is an absolute win-win,” Mr. Mnuchin said.
Under the new terms, South Korea would double the import quota for American-made cars that meet U.S. safety rules—but not Korean ones—to 50,000 from 25,000 per U.S. car maker each year, the statement said.
And South Korea will now allow the U.S. to keep its 25% tariffs on pickup trucks in place for 20 more years. The truck tariffs had been set to expire in 2021.
In return, the U.S. agreed to give South Korea a permanent exemption from 25% import tariffs on steel. South Korea had been temporarily excluded from the metals tariffs.
The U.S., however, has set a quota to reduce South Korean steel imports. The quota has been set at 2.68 million tons a year, or 70% of South Korea’s annual average steel exports to the U.S., the statement said.
South Korea is the largest importer of Chinese steel and the third largest steel supplier to the U.S. The U.S. has expressed concern that South Korea serves as a conduit for inexpensive Chinese metal to enter the U.S.

Can you post parts of the story? It says nothing about what the US got for this, only that SK is exempt from tariffs which does not seem like a win for us at all

Was the tariff really going to hurt SK so badly? This seems like a shit deal for them

Remember in the last thread when I said Google should ban InfoWars from YouTube? But some said freedom speech and all that. Defend this.
|
The defense would still be the same: Freedom of speech.
Of course, on private social media networks, certain rights like freedom of speech are often curtailed because of terms of service agreements and other contracts... so freedom of speech was never a proper argument anyway.
|
Youtube and Facebook just want to profit from content with none of the responsibility or liability.

The concession that was won there was that that there will be reduced steel imports from SK, which benefits a favorite company of this administration, U.S. Steel. Regarding what they got on the deal, South Korea imports a lot from China anyways so if they so choose they could import more from SK & less from China directly. Anyways, there is a need for a lot of raw materials in the US & so there are countries that can help with that to some degree as South Korea just did now. The US keeps a tariff on foreign trucks in place to protect GM, Ford, & Chevy. Honda & Volkswagen build a lot of vehicles in the US with factories that are located in the US anyways so those don't have that much of an impact on those factories since they are locally based. Anyways, it's all very complicated and there aren't many ppl that fully understand the situation
