Indeed. The current problem with the shutdown is a nice example of this. If you do a thing in a way that constantly needs action to stay active, that thing will continue to be used as a bargaining chip.

Is that a reasonable assumption? Yep. It was the best thing to do a month ago but he's just now doing it. Democrats have been digging down in that time and they might be able to hold on.

Yes it's wrong to play with these peoples lives and use then as political pawns but the fact of the matter is Republicans are in charge and these people are likely fucked if nothing is done to help them soon.
Considering Trump tried to end the DACA Program via executive order, does anyone trust him to not do the same again under the justification of "DACA are mostly bad people killing Americans with DRUGS and GANG VIOLENCE"? This is still a hostage situation.
First, Trump tries to end DACA. Then intentionally shuts down the government (who are all Democrats anyway so who cares). Then promises to temporarily restore the programs that were shut down by Trump and the government willingly shut down by Trump for some $$$ (that Mexico was going to pay for) for some stupid wall that is going to do fuck all beyond tell Republicans "we owned the libs". Trump's not offering any good faith deals or policy here, there's no reason for Dems to cave unless public opinion shifts drastically.
This "deal" isn't for the public or congress or anyone. Its entirely for the media in the hope they "both sides" this situation by claiming Dems are now unwilling to compromise while Trump does. Despite Trump is really offering shit all and basically putting DACA on a knife's edge all over again. The timing of this announcement is on a Saturday and he clearly didn't talk to any Democrats to hash out the details, no one is going to give a shit about this except for the media.
It could certainly work, because the "liberal media" love nothing but blaming "both sides" for something, but very much less likely after Trump decided being a huge dumbass for the first two months of the shutdown was the best course of action to get his wall. People blaming Democrats and both sides for the shutdown match Trump's approval rating right now and I don't see that budging significantly. The increase in disapproval has been due to slippage with white men, evangelicals and non-college educated white women - the core demographics of the Republican base. Democratic aligned demographics are pretty well hardened against Trump, I don't see that changing really just because Trump offers to shoot the Democrats in the leg instead of the head.

All Dems need to do is keep sending bills to reopen the gov to the senate. In a month food stamps will run out and a starving mob will start lynching senators.

While I still don't really believe that we're going to make it as a species I will say watching Lefttube grow gives me a ton more hope than I used to have. The fact that they can all combine together for a Donkey Kong stream and raise over 150k$ for trans kids in 40 hours (it's still going) is... not the Youtube I remembered, and one of the main reasons for my general pessimism is how far right a generation raised on Youtube is going to be.

So put me down as still on team Buzzfeed. Giuliani is running the 'maybe he did, maybe he didn't' pre defense we see before the big stories leak out.
+ Show Spoiler +
Even further, Giuliani is putting out damaging admissions about Cohen talking to Donald about Trump Tower Moscow all the way up to the 2016 election.
+ Show Spoiler +
Giuliani was one verbal tick away from confirming the thrust of the Buzzfeed story today, so let's just see what else falls out about team Donald and Cohen.
Team Buzzfeed has some source somewhere that is feeding them this stuff. They aren't just freely making it up if Giuliani is admitted all the way up the 99 yard line on Donald talking with Cohen. Buzzfeed's source is probably SDNY, not SCO, and the SDNY source had a bad read on what the SCO did or didn't have.
EDIT: further, since Donald cannot use a computer and likely has to hunt and peck if he ever tried to type, he never in fact sends an email. This means that even if there are all kinds of documentation of Cohen going back and forth with Dowd over his upcoming testimony, Donald's total technical ignorance shields him from ever have an electronic paper trail linking him to Cohen's lies. This combined with Donald's constant lying and unreliability and senility makes pinning any sort of knowledge on him nigh impossible (especially criminal levels of knowledge).

AOC turned up on the stream as well as Owen Jones from the Guardian and a bunch of other people and its now up to $250,000. Its impressive and good to see.

Buzzfeed broke the Moscow Trump Tower story 6 months before everyone else did and just today Giuliani conceded that Trump himself talked about that new Trump Tower all the way up to the election. Their track record is looking good. They say they stand by their story and their reporting, so let's wait and see. Give Giuliani one more week of admissions and he will probably up and say that Trump talked to Cohen about his testimony.

There's problems with Buzzfeed's journalistic work but that's sort of business model absolutely not a problem.
All forms of journalism has long funded their investigative work through other seemingly irrelevant means. In the past, local/regional newspapers would make a large chunk of their $$$ off sections like obituaries and classifieds. Of course a lot of that went out the window when the internet killed off those revenue streams. Which is a shame because local/regional newspapers used to do a large bulk of investigative work that just doesn't exist anymore.
As you might know none of the Australian newspapers were able to adapt to a world where the Green Guide, Herald Sun sports analysis and classifieds/obituaries sections were made obsolete within a few years. Which is why they're all suffering from 10% YOY declines with no end in sight.
If Buzzfeed feels they need to fund their investigative work via clickbait and kitchen utensils, then so be it. As the article states, digital ads were underperforming due to Facebook and Google taking larger cuts. Instead of dying like newspapers, they were proactive and found ways to diversify their revenue streams. And it seems to be working, their Tasty media brand uses advertiser funded cooking content to help sell Tasty branded kitchen utensils.
I should add that this business model doesn't seem much different from Marie Claire subsidizing their magazine content with the sales of homewares and kitchen utensils.
I mean, is what Buzzfeed doing any different from cable news shows selling air time for infomercials or Alex Jones selling penis growth pills on his website?

You're saying "having to resort to" as if this is somehow a negative thing. Buzzfeed is much much more than a news company, having most of their income based on their very popular youtube series such as Tasty, Worth it, and their list videos, which leaves their investigative journalists free to actually do their jobs instead of forcing them to come up with half assed clickbait articles (which, ironically, is what their youtube channel is famously known for)

I think it's the most unequivocally good thing I've ever been a part of. This was fucking amazing.

I was watching all night, it certainly felt like something special. Its the first time Lefttube actually felt like a community that could develop into something effective. I hope they take momentum from this.

It is pretty amazing to me seeing how many people are huge fans of AOC. All over my facebook, lots of people who weren't very far left are totally convinced by her message. She is something very special.

She has tapped into the thing that Democrats forgot to promote since Obama’s run(and before), which is goals that promise specific results. Rather than some sense of things being “better” and presenting some vague “opportunity” that will somehow make your life better. And like Nancy Pelosi, AOC does not give a FUCK what Republican TV personalities, AKA grifters, say about her.

Her general message is also kinda hard to dislike, as was Obamas. I'm sceptical of her, call it experience, but compared to about anyone else? At least you know what she wants and the things she wants are actually nice.

I just realized that all of that (specific goals, does not care what the other side says about him) could also be said about Trump. Is he the right wing version of this effect?

Kamala Harris threw in her hat for 2020, which is expected afaik. She seems to be a fairly popular and acceptable mainstream choice for the Democrats, though the far-left Jacobin magazine reader types seem very divided on her justice policies, which they see as too aggressive.
By the way, I'm glad this thread ignored the Covington/March for Life shitstorm. It was a mess of very poor initial reporting, jumpy social media reactions, and a lot of people not taking the time to analyze the whole picture with patience. People and news agencies are looking very foolish right now, I'll say that.

Trump is bringing more fascism into the liberalism of the republican party. AOC is bringing more socialism into the liberalism of the democratic party. In that they have mirroring influences, but I don't really like the comparison, cause by equating the two we are implying that we're starting from a point that is somewhere in the center, and in the US that is not the case, it's going to take so much more socialist influence to get to something really socialist than it's going to take fascist influence to get to something really fascist. On top of that, it's quite obvious that Trump is just spinning whatever furthers his own personal agenda, and so far AOC appears to mean it.
