This does not mean TL merged with CR. CR is sponsoring TL.

Tokyo Ghoul is pretty good, uhh, Attack on Titan too, mmm... personally I like Toriko.

People, as you know, are super attached to the TL community, when you make an announcement that kinda reads like a merger people get very scared very fast.

To me you either you make a funny announcement where you know some people will whine or you make sure there's absolutely no misconceptions. You did the first thing (which I like) but i dont get how you can be surprised by some of the community reaction then.

Not every sponsorship announcement has to be written for the NY Times. I think it was supposed to be fun and using some anime memes to make it more cute. You are right, it is a bit unclear: it's a sponsorship. As for what it's offering to the users, the details are in there

I think people are just misunderstanding the wording with "fusion". It was a joke referencing what is seemingly an obvious anime meme, but the confusion is understandable--hard to determine this when you are on the inside.

Crunchyroll sponsors TL would be more clear, but less topical and fun. There is a trade off, you're right. Hopefully it's more clear now though!

Yeah, I think this post could definitely use some "sirius bizness" paragraph spoilered below all the cutesy stuff or something, that explains clearly what the news is about. Besides being amused by the graphics and memes, I was definitely in the camp that had no idea what any of it actually meant ^^.

Don't watch One Piece, unless you're maybe 15 years old, then you might enjoy it (especially if you haven't watched better anime first). It's a waste of time anime.

For anime, I suggest (watch all subbed):
- Berserk (dark fantasy, more mature, cult anime. watch the old version, not the new "movies")
- Neon Genesis Evangelion (cult, watch the old series. there are 2 endings, don't remember which one is better to watch first)
- Golden Boy (comedy, only 6 episodes, watch the dubbed version, this is one of the rare dubs that's actually better than the japanese voices)
- Akira (anime movie, dystopian future, cult anime)
- Hellsing (old one, the new is also not bad)
- Cowboy Bebop (more mature than most anime)
etc.

Nice to see this partnership!

Whats wrong with Crunchy?

their subs.

Exactly. I don't even watch anime and I know this.

I'm not sure partnering with these guys is a good idea professionally.

I hope you're being sarcastic. If you don't watch anime, you're working with some very dubious secondhand information. Crunchy does a pretty damn good job with their subs considering the time frame they have to work with (they typically only have a few hours between when they get the RAWs and when their simulcasts go up). Apart from a few minor translation or localization issues, their subs are pretty high quality.

Also, they just made a deal with their primary business rival Funimation through which they get the licenses to most of Funi's subtitled catalog, and to most subtitled simulcasts moving forward, so they've just gained almost a monopoly on subtitled anime. Seems like a pretty great idea to partner with them professionally at the moment.

Crunchy has improved a lot over the years. They used to be pretty bad but are good for what they do now. The only thing I dislike is the white subtitles with almost no border/shadow that in some bright series are hard to read.

Nah, the anime isn't good anymore anyway (go for the manga instead), so that's fine.

I thought they would actually merge. With myanimelist having entered the streaming business some time ago, it wasn't unthinkable.

Can agree with that, though, Golden Buy is more for perverted people who like comedy.

Anime stopped being good when they caught up to the manga and stopped with filler content. After that you have like 5 minutes (max) of worthwhile content in a 24 minute episode.

Some other recommendations outside what people normally think of as the standard defining work in an anime genre.

Sci Fi
Time of Eve is about androids and their rights.
Space Brothers is about people wanting to reach space.

Fantasy
Natsume Yujin-cho a high school student inherits a book with the true names of Japanese "demons" and the meetings this generates.

Slice of Life
Barakamon is about a calligrapher that wants to get his life back on track in the countryside.

Sports
Ping Pong the Animation is about a genius at table tennis that quit and his journey back to the sport. Very different animation than most people normally think of as the standard anime, especially in action scenes. Reminds of the later One Punch Man animation in some ways.

It's not clear that "fuse" is an insider dragonball Z meme if you aren't part of that meme anime culture. Just to clear up why outsiders would obviously be confused about an insider reference. It is a very clever reference, but it is confusing when "fuse" does have immediately obvious meaning. When I saw the title I thought that it meant the two companies were merging, before clicking on the subtitles.

On a side note the actual Japanese looks suspiciously like google translate.

Some evidence: 「Crunchyrollは以上二万五千の無料のエピソードを持っています。」 sounds like the English words were directly translated into Japanese and jammed together. Perhaps 「Crunchyrollでは2万5千以上のエピソードを無料で見ることが出来ます。」

However, the first few words アニメやビデオゲームは (which is better worded as アニメとテレビゲームは) seem to suggest that a non-fluent speaker did the writing rather than google, which probably wouldn't have used ビデオゲーム). However, a non-fluent speaker probably wouldn't make the mistakes in evidence A.

edit: Looking at the "turn on subtitles" version, it's definitely not a machine translation (of that text at least). The translation and the "original" don't match at all.

Sources: self (non-fluent speaker, used google translate for many years)

On topic:

If you actually want to support the studios buy (pre-order) the BDs. Usually costs about USD 400-500 + shipping + commission for 6-7 volumes (12-13 episodes). For many shows the BD sales represent a very large portion of the total revenue to the studio. For all of you who complain about no second season for XXX show or YYY show, this is why.
