Although this thread does not function under the same strict guidelines as the USPMT, it is still a general practice on TL to provide a source with an explanation on why it is relevant and what purpose it adds to the discussion. Failure to do so will result in a mod action.

With just one week to go before the national election, Canada’s Liberal Party is gathering steam, as the country enters the final stretch in what has been the longest election campaign in its modern history.

Polls indicate the Liberal party, which despite election losses spanning the past decade has long considered itself to be Canada’s “natural governing party” , is now within reach of an electoral win.

Greg Lyle, a pollster at Innovative Research, said the traditionally centrist party successfully tapped into many of the voters that had abandoned them over the last three elections. The party is now running neck-and-neck with the incumbent Conservative Party, if not slightly ahead according to some polls.

Yep, looking good for the Liberals. I'll reply to BallinWitStalin points later, but atm:

Agree with: 1,3,4,9,10
Controversial: 2,6,7,12
Disagree: 5,8,11,13

Just want to also add, I don't think it's really fair to measure emission on a per capita basis. Canada emits 1/6th of the emissions of India, yet our land mass is way bigger. One of the most simple ways to promote sustainability is by population control (obviously it's easier for Canada, but we could just as easily accept more immigrants or offer larger benefits to families having children to grow the economy)... If Canada manages its population, why should we spend so much on reducing emissions? Canada's air quality is way superior to essentially any Asian country, and most European countries as well.

I know it's a different perspective than most are used to, but living in Calgary, the quality of our air and forests, lakes, etc is great. You go to Shanghai or Beijing, or even London... lol. Doing per capita emission is kind of silly, because our planet can handle only so much emissions (and that is a fixed amount), and the land mass of the world is a fixed amount (more or less), so shouldn't we fix emissions to land mass, and not population, which is a constantly changing number?

If China doubles its population, should it produce twice as much emissions? No, if we set limits, it should produce half as much emissions per capita.

edit: I'm not saying not to promote cheap solutions to reduce emissions, but I'm suggesting that we don't need as aggressive of a strategy as many are suggesting.

In this shocking turn of events the Toronto Star has officially endorsed Liberal leader Justin Trudeau for Prime Minister.

http://www.thestar.com/opinion/editorials/2015/10/09/for-justin-trudeau-and-the-liberal-party-editorial.html

this is pretty good...Justin's old man never let this happen.

Yeah, the polls are definitely trending more and more toward the Liberals winning at least a minority. I can't say my feelings are hurt by that.

Also, the Conservatives must have saved half their ad budget for the last week of the campaign. I saw no less than 3 different Conservative attack ads during a single commercial break while watching the news this evening. Almost every break had at least 1, if not 2. Not to mention there are those ads relentlessly on every channel right now.

One of my friends funnily said that if the Conservatives keep it up with this onslaught of attack ads on Trudeau as they are, people will get so fed up with them that they'll vote Liberal just to spite the Conservatives for annoying them so much.

Yep, and remember, since 1988, all majorities had a popular vote of 36.5% and 43% (1984 had a massive 50% of the popular vote), and as such... It'll be very possible for the Liberals to secure one too if the polls and the trends are any indication (which I'd prefer to either a minority liberal or conservative government).

the GG might as well swear Trudeau in now

to get a small (c) Conservative like Mccallion on their side.. i got no idea how the PC's recover from this.

this bullet has been in the chamber for a long time and i think the Liberals chose the exact perfect time to finally pull the trigger.

excellent strategizing by the liberals.

I think the Liberals are being incredibly smart by targeting the small c conservatives at this stage. They've already wooed many progressives away from the NDP so going after one of the other groups most disillusioned with Harper (conservatives who feel that Harper's extreme brand of conservatism doesn't suite them) at this stage is genius. Danny Williams already worked his magic in the east so to get another incredibly popular conservative to vocally go against Harper is just going to help the Liberals even more.

Everybody from the east hates harper anyways, the only reason he even had seats out there was because of popular local MPs like Peter Mackay and Gerald Keddy.

Seriously, I think that's part of the reason they jumped ship. Everyone hates Harper so bad right now out East that even if they had really electable candidates I think they'd probably still lose pretty badly.

Yeah. I wish that happened haha. In american politics at least people may hate attack ads but they're statistically very effective.

ratings for yesterday's Blue Jays game were through the rogers centre roof.
It was non-stop election ads and those Hurricane Hazel ads blew everyone else away.

its really clear Hazel greatly dislikes Harper and the Liberals waited until 5 days before the election to fire that bullet... damn.

Trudeau is crushing in the polls and likely is going to form some sort of coalition government with Mulcair but we will see. The Libertarian Party of Canada is the only one that even remotely interests me and even they are too statist.

i'm libertarian. i just pick the best candidate and balance that with how good my local person is and vote accordingly. the kind of change western civilization needs to embrace freedom and liberty won't happen at an election so don't waste your energy.

The Liberals break out Hazel on a giant ratings night

http://www.macleans.ca/politics/ottawa/hurricane-hazel-steps-into-the-ring/

It'll be interesting to see if the PCs ever formulate a coherent reply to Mccallion's comments during any election campaign commercials.

i wonder how much Hazel we'll see during tonight's game. i'm thinking... LOTS.

I'll be watching both the game and the commercials with keen interest.

its pains me to say this... but with Rogers Communications and Bell basically owning every form of media in English Canada... the Toronto Star has become one of the few remaining independent voices.
The Star was the only ones that would use the "C" word when talking about James Reimer

Kathleen Wynne and Dalton Mcguinty have been an absolute unmitigated disaster running Ontario and the PCs attempted to tap into that by trying to link them to the Feds.

It features Wynne triumphantly proclaiming "We Need Trudeau as the next PM of this country"
The Liberal/Mccallion ad is 100 times more effective.

Well the election is tomorrow. I just want to make my case here. In Canada we don't really have a real democracy under first past the post. Last time 60% of the people didn't vote for Harper and instead of getting some level of control that's reflective of their decisions, Harper was given a majority to do whatever he wants. Basically, 60% of Canadians (the majority) are being ignored in Canada directly because of first past the post. If that isn't a failure in the democratic system I don't know what is. So fundamentally this needs to change.

Well how to change it? Vote in the candidate that has been emphatic about getting rid of that system, and who has the best chance of winning. That just happens to be Trudeau and the liberal party.

I understand people have a lot of different views, many are libertarian and so on. Myself I tend to vote for the green party. But you really have to work on the fundamentals before anything else, and the fundamentals tragically don't yet exist in Canada. So lets at least get a basic democracy in place, then we can go on to voting for whoever we want.

edit: Well I guess the obvious exceptions are if your riding is highly likely to vote NDP just get NDP instead. But in ridings where its close I think liberal is better.

~Happy voting day~

What constitutes endorsement though? I keep up with La Presse and I haven't seen a straight up endorsement of the conservatives.

Edit: Misread the chart.
