I don't know, and we'll probably have to wait another decade to find out. Which is the saddest part.
It'd really, really suck if Martin died before finishing the next book.

Spoilers For Dance With Dragons + Show Spoiler +I do think that he is dead, His body anyway. He will probably live in through ghost, but it is possible that Mel pulls some crazy magic and heals him somehow. What a cliff hanger to leave a book on.
Don't know if I could stand waiting years and years for the next book.

Don't know if I could stand waiting years and years for the next book. DWD Spoilers + Show Spoiler +Yeah, I'm guessing Mel intervened. Or at least Jon seemed like he was part of her plans. 'Rescuing' him would've been a more convincing demonstration of her power than trying to warn him and have him ignore. There also aren't any repeating POV characters on the wall anymore if Jon is dead. I think Mel was only POV for a chapter.
Also, mildly disappointed at no update about Sam or Littlefinger/Sansa. At least Arya had a couple chapters. Oh well. Still excellent.

DwD arrived in my mail today, but the earliest point when I will be able to read is next week.
Such agony!
|
I got my hands on a dance with dragons. Didn't read it yet, but I am incredibly excited.
|
Just finished DwD, spoilierz.
+ Show Spoiler + Overall the book had a very FoC feel to it. The entire book seemed very...transitional with nothing important happening until the very end (and then everybody gettin' raped in here).
Tyrion, Victarion and Quentyn's chapters were like Brienne's chapters - just traveling and ultimately being rather boring, especially Tyrion's. Was stoked when Quentyn got himself burnt to a crisp though,
Davos - Happy to see that he's still alive.
Jaime - Definitely didn't like the ending to his chapter. Brienne isn't dead and knows where Sansa is? wut
Cersei - FrankenGregor will be lulz. Return of Varys is cool, felt bad for Kevan though.
Arya - Awesome chapters. Still wondering how/when she'll be relevant. Hopefully she won't fade into obscurity.
Dany - I especially didn't like Dany's chapters, since half of them are just her lusting after Daario. She didn't do anything the entire book. Near the end I was half expecting her to just go and die of dysentery and the last page being a trollface.
Melisandre - Had an interesting chapter. I liked how it humanized her by showing her compassion and the fact that she's not all-powerful.
Jon - I was lolling hard when Aegon showed up since to me it casts a lot of doubt on him being Lyanna and Rhaegar's son. But three dragon heads and all so maybe not. Expecting some miraculous recovery from getting Caeser'd.
Now only five years till the next one (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

+ Show Spoiler +Comnpletely dumbfounded. I thought we knew all the main players by this 5th book.. and then Aerys comes out of nowhere. 3 dragon heads right? Aerys, daeny and... jon?
Also extremely disapointed at the lack of Sansa and Arya. Arya had only two chapters for two books straight now, while Sanda gets 0 in DwD and 2 in FoC. I feel that while there was alot of personal character cevelopment and personal storyline movement, the main narrative shifted very, very little, just alot of "moving about". I guess its like getting the chess peices into position.

Martin said himself that mastering the "Merenesse Knot" was the hardest part for him. He even had to rewrite some parts during the process. In the end im pretty unsatisfied after the book cause the knot is still not untied...
Some theories/questions to discuss: + Show Spoiler + Is Jon really dead? Common thinking seems he died but will be resurrected somehow by Melisandre. Together with some mind-warging with ghost he should be fine imo...
What happened at Winterfell? Did Stannis really lose the battle? I think the letter is a fake. It wouldnt make any sense with the whole introduction of the banker who meets with Stannis. He probably warns him about the backstabbing of Karstark and about the fake Arya. Then Stannis should not attack Winterfell blindly...What happened to Mance tho? Did he die in Winterfell?
What happened to Dany? To me the blood was not the sign of the pale mare but rather a miscarriage. Together with her thoughts about her period etc it would make sense. The cramps were caused by eating the wrong berries imo. -> She is not infected with the plague!

I love ASOIAF. I've seen AGOT and I read AGOT, 1/4 done with ACOK. Soooooogood.

+ Show Spoiler +WTF JON SNOW. WTF KEVAN LANNISTER. WTF QUENTYN WHY ARE U GOING TO INTRODUCE YET ANOTHER CHARACTER JUST TO DIE AO#$ITJA$OITJA$OITJ$TOIJA$OTI$OJATIOJ
sigh. Quentyn I wasn't that attached to, if Jon Snow dies, then like 600 pages of book development are completely pointless (unless it's all a pretext for a wilding invasion of the North, if he gets brought back my Melisandre and becomes a convert to the Fire god I quit the books ><
I enjoyed Davos' storyline, especially Manderly's granddaughter who is so faithful to Robb and the North.
Tyrion, I've never been a huge fan, so meh. And didn't see that Aegon storyline coming...holy shit.
As for Jaime, pretty sure Brienne came to him to bring him back to see Catelyn, I'm curious to see how that goes...
Sam's storyline is uber boring, don't care about that. Cersei, broken woman, she got what she deserved, but Kevan dying might light a fire under her again. Varys, you sneaky sneaky bastard.
|
dwd spoiler + Show Spoiler +BLOODRAVEN - holy shit did not see this coming probably need to have read the dunk/egg mini stories for this to have some significance but this guy is fucking legendary - bastard of aegon the unworthy, alleged sorcerer, hand of the king, kinslayer, lord commander of the nights watch...greenseer?!!?! wtfffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff

+ Show Spoiler + Stannis I don't think attacks winterfell. Not only would the banker bring knowledge of the karstarks coming betrayal, but so would theon and jeyne. The truth in the letter deals with Mance, as Mance was the bard who thought of the plan to steal Jeyne from winterfell.
Jon hopefully is not dead as all the work done in this book would go basically to waste. Wildlings outnumber the watch, are on that side of the wall, and are all armed and armoured. Watch would get absolutely raped. Most likely the men involved are all "queens men". She or her knights bought, convinced, or threatened the brothers into attacking jon. If you notice the mention of Bowan knifing him, he is crying. It was not an action he wished to take. As such I think he will somehow survive, most likely through the intervention of Mellisandre. I also believe that due to this "attack" he will have been viewed as dead then reborn, thus allowing him to leave the watch without breaking his vows.

just unpacked it!! finally.
|
So I ordered it but I couldn't wait for it to get here, downloaded it somewhere and killed my eyes reading for hours straight.
+ Show Spoiler +WHY YOU KILL JON SHOW. I sooo hope he's not dead.. This book was absolutely epic in my opinion, my favorite so far.

KwarK's message cracks me up for no reason, I just find the message amusing.
This is 5th in queue for my reading list in the summer. How good is it so far?
|
I'd planned on waiting till it was released in paperback but I cracked today and got it for $18 at Hastings. Let the reading marathon begin!

good book it is setting up a lot of plot lines for the last two books

I got my copy the day it came out. I was just walking around some mall I never been to waiting for my driving test when I found their local book store. Perfect waiting material.

I was really interested after reading GoT and clash of kings, but after basically skimming the major plot points in the next 2 books through ASOIAF wiki, I'm really not that tempted to continue reading. There's a bunch of filler chapters where literally nothing happens and people just talk and talk and talk.
