We, the staff of TeamLiquid.net, have noticed a disturbing trend as of late. This trend, as we have come to know it, is what we refer to as an influx of shitty posters. What exactly is a shitty poster? The loose definition tends to be someone who can be considered worthless, and either does not contribute, or negatively contributes to the forums, yet does not technically do anything that could be deemed bannable, so they are able to hang around and pollute our boards.
The increase of these anomalies has had a direct correlation on the degredation of these boards, and we've had about enough of it. So, starting today, being a shitty poster is a bannable offense.
So, what does this mean for you, our dear TL.net reader? All this means, is that we're simply asking you to stop and think before you hit the post button.
Ask yourself the following:
Is my post going to contribute somehow? - We don't expect everyone here to be a My_Digital_Toss for example, but we've seen far too many people contribute, well, nothing. That doesn't mean you can't reply with one-liners that add something informative or have comedic value, or even a simple "LOL" encourges whoever posted something amusing, but far too often do we skim through someone's posting history, only to find virtually every post has been two lines or less, and has never added anything valuable. If you aren't sure if your post is going to add anything relevent or not, it probably isn't, so don't post.
Am I helping to keep TeamLiquid.net a quality forum? - We've always prided ourselves on having high quality, meaningful discussions, whether it has to do with pro-gaming in Korea, or about just how much can Moltke really write within an hour. Please help us keep our forums clean and do not litter.
Am I trolling/flaming someone, and if so, is it warranted and creative? - Blatent flaming for no reason is not going to be tolerated; if you don't like someone, take it up via a PM discussion. If you disagree with someone, counter their arguments, rather than stooping to petty insults.
We understand however some people need to be flamed; but if you're going to do it, at least be tactful and creative about it. Read Brood's reply in this thread to see what we're talking about.
Following these simple little suggestions, you too can avoid becoming a shitty poster and help keep TL.net a fun, happy, and productive place.
Happy posting, and remember, you have been warned!

i agree completely with all of them except the last one.. *well i still understand it but i think it could be worded a lil different.
sometimes people just need to be told to STFU and they are not worth any creative effort of any kind. for example the link you posted with broods witty reply a simple Fuck Off would of done nicely.

A true gentleman is one who is able to correct you in such a way that you both feel good afterwards - there are very few situations where a normal person should even feel the need to flame someone, I'm a firm believer in that most problems can be solved with a man to man talk. I don't see much of that around here or on any forum on the entire internet for that matter. Adults, like we're supposed to be, just don't talk to each other the way we do sometimes on here, and I think everyone knows that.
The only times when I feel flaming is warranted is if someone's being way too obvious about being annoying, i.e spamming or shit like that. But even then, the best recourse is to just ignore them.
Talk to people online the way you would in real life, that's a good measure of how mature you are. That said, ETT, answer your fucking PMs.

When was the last time we had one of those cleanup weeks or whatever they were called? Mainly everyone who made shitty post that week met the grim fate of bannination. Maybe we should have one of those again. On a sidenote I have noticed an increase (the last year or so) in the use of "LOL" for no apparent reason as an end of sentences ect. But that's just a thing that annoys me and probably has to do with me getting older and the average tl.net user staying the same age. Wooderson but not as cool or something like that.

replace the word adult with civil person.

Ahh... I get this weird feeling that my crappy thread about "general bw" started this.. Sorry I'm new here. T__T; I'll try to stick to relevant and positive threads/posts. I usually argue with reason and common sense, which some people seem to lack. But how come almost everyone's not taking this thread seriously? No it didn't start with that.
There is/was nothing wrong with your post, just some cock acting like there was.

Yeah, like twisted said, that had really absolutely nothing to do with it. The degeneration of the fourms is something that we are constantly trying to fight day to day.
I have a question that I honestly believe is valid. If we make a stupid post and add sexy pictures of nearly naked women or other material to appease the testosterone gods, will we still get banned? So say, for example, if I add this picture does my post become valid?
Well it's good that there was technically nothing wrong with my thread a couple of days ago.

Haha I'm pretty sure every mod here is a guy, so I'd say it definitely depends on the quality of the picture and the stupidity of the post.
i lost my link to the automated ban list and the search function doesn't return anything of value, is there any kind soul here that can post the link again?

Didn't rek ban some people for posting explicit pictures and call them "fucking degenerates"? I know I can remeber 2 incidents. Probably that's not a good idea. On a side note, anyone remeber Eg)heavens LOL?

Good ass yes.
I think the rules are fair enough, considering the fact that I am going to get owned and banned some time soon, but if it helps the website, it is good for me.

So right. I have moderated many a forum so I know how hard it is to keep things productive and meaningful. One of the reasons of the latest drop in quality content is the sudden increase in users after the demise of PGTour. It will settle when people learn the ground rules.
The best way to moderate is when forum moderators set the bar high on their own posts and threads, thus setting the example, and earning the authority to expect the same from all.
Some of the replies of this very thread is a perfect example of what I mean. I agree with the new policy. Thanks.

There is many types of trolls. Klogon mentions one aspect of trolls. Some trolls do more than that though.
There are purely attention seeking trolls. They do what they do because they are mainly seeking attention, even if it is in a negative and misguided way - the pissing off part is a by product. These guys are sometimes just passive aggressive personalities which can be easily be confused as pure trolls.
Nevertheless, there are even worse kinds of trolls. There is the "I am completely selfish and I don't care if you die" type of troll that loves being nasty and participates just to be able to hurt or harm other people. These too, are misguided haters with a deep feeling of inadequacy, i.e. the classic forum wanabe "e-bully".
Then there is the worst kind of all, the ones that do it with the specific intentional goal of ruining the forum, every thread and creating constant havoc . They usually are members of other failing forums, or that have already been rejected by another forum, who deep down are on a mission, consciously or unconsciously to ruin their new host forum.
The first two you can actually correct with time, though it is generally not worth the time, but the last type one needs to burned at the stake the second you smell 'em out - no hesitation.
Physician post like a very in deep-researcher in trolls topic. i think its ok about the bans but there are some shit post that doesnt need to be banned really thread dependant like live report threads half of the post there are shitty (dont belong to any category mentioned) but are ok about the thread. i only expect good common sense
Im going to go with the simplest definitions possible.
Lurker: someone who observes, but does not interact. This is generally a good thing to do when new to a forum:
Troll: Someone who knows the meaning of what they post, and the source of its offence, but pretends to be a newb, or unaware of its effects. An experienced troll will make a ridiculous claim, or more often a highly divisive claim (mac is better than pc, protoss is a race for pussies, etc.) lurk while people react, wait for the furor to die down, and then make another post, usually an apology that simultaneously makes another troll, or a statement along the lines of: "I dont know what you guys are so upset about (repeat troll#1 or insert troll post#2)." The trolls goal is to create as much chaos as possible while attempting to retain an innocent/newb appearance. Contrast this with flamebait.
Flamebait is a post or series of posts that will inevitably lead to an all-out flame war. The difference between flamebait and trolls are the lack of inside jokes and general awareness. A troll will post with the intent of creating chaos, while flamebait is often unintentional.

This is a good point. Honestly, I didn't say it myself earlier because I figured it was an easy way to weed them out. But if you were on the verge for a while and you made a sarcastic crap post here, we will remember you again, check your posts, hunt you down, and kill you.
Ok I don't understand why someone like Nexus or Joyo are banned in this post, but not people like Alborz (who in my lurking time I've only seen quote other people without anything else in his post, or write "lol" "ok"), or Mortality, who started posting the pictures of women, or hell, any of the 15 other people who posted "hi" or "LOL!!!!" or ";0;;;" or something like that.

It wasn't just from THIS topic. We have an easy way to check out their last posts so we look at those and decide. Also, many people we ban are people we've been thinking about for a while, like a mental "watch out for" list.
Just reaffirming what Klogon said - Virtually no one is ever banned from a single post, everyone that has been banned so far has been on a list in one of our heads as someone to keep an eye on; and when they didn't heed the warning, they got the axe.

isn't there some risk this will stifle the forums and turn it into a quiet church of nodding yes-men?

I think this is good, personally. There seems to have been an invasion of shitty posters recently, who seem to think this is the new GameFAQs, so far as posting shitty posts go.

That post that Brood made seems a lot like when Stewie told that girl in acting class of on Family Guy.
That being said, I think this is a good thing that's being done, because there are a lot of new people who have seeped in through the woodworks and started making incredibly shitty posts. It would seem that about five of them got taken out in this thread-- which is kind of funny, because you'd think that this would be the last thread a shitty poster would want to post something shitty in, especially after the joke was worn out about 50 times before they got here.
Also, topics wont be all that active if all we have are "contributing posts". A person makes a topic which is supposed to either contribute, or ask for contributers. If the latter sense, yeah, we could weed out the shitty posters. But if its say, someone just showing off a replay or a story, then how are people supposed to respond to that? "lol that was really funny because ... , especially when youre mentioned pt 1, pt 2, pt 3." Yeah, theres crap posts, but whats really expected of us?

saying "lol that was really funny" is not a shitty post.
a shitty post is saying "FAKESTEVE UR A FAG STOP POSTING NOOB"
the first one was commenting on how much the poster enjoyed the thread. the second one is insulting and takes up space. do you see the difference?

I think that was explained pretty well in the opening post. They aren't saying that you can't post one-liners, they're just saying if you're going to post a one-liner make it useful to the thread in general.

On a more serious note, I guess this kind of initiative is kind of necessary to improve the quality of the forums, but I sure hope you at least pm the damned souls reasonably prior to them...The majority of us, including myself, can only contribute so much, but often, we see this forum as a form of release through words, rather to express a certain degree of escapism from our lives or just for the fun of it. Those type of posts may or may not contribute, but being terminated for it? Perhaps list a few of these "shitty" posters and put them in general analysis, I'm rather curious...shouldn't take much work shouldn't it? ;P Looking at the ban list, names like Lawl mart annd others don't feel like individuals that were bad posters. Sure they may have been one-liners and not top quality, but must we be like Spartans? -_-;

Generally speaking, one-liners by themselves will not get you banned. One-liners, combined with a bad or counter-productive attitude, perhaps a little trolling here and there, etc., definitely will. And also as I have said before, most the people who've been banned so far have already been on our radar - so it's not like this is sudden, or based on a handful of posts, but rather patterns/trends.
As long as you don't follow that kind of pattern, you should be fine. ^_^
Just a quick question. What about those of us, (cough, like me, cough.) that dont necessarily flame or troll, but sometimes end up making threads/posts that dont go over as well as we had intended for them to. (I.E.- few responses, generally negative responses.)
Also, once a poster has made it onto someone's list, are they given a p.m. to change their act, or is that held off until action is very close to being taken?

ive got to agree with ett. ive only got a few months as an actual poster but i lurked here for a while. as much as the commandments make it look like they rule tl.net with a no-mercy, iron first attitude, it is actually pretty fair. the one warning ive gotten was after i was involved in a nice little arguement that evolved into a flame war. really, as long as your quality post count outnumbers your one-liners and dumb shit post count by a good margin, youre pretty safe.
You guys don't really get it. Posting one-liners is not a bad thing, as long as it's not the ONLY thing you post. There's lots of these people only posting 'lol!' once in a while. If that's all that you do, you're a shitty poster .
Everyone fears rekrul, but truth of the matter it is Twisted the one you should be fearing. He is the true clorinator, he is systematic and relentless; rekrul is more sporadic and random!
Bottom line though, forum moderation is all about thinking what is best for the forum, not your self or your ego etc., and a lot of commonsense. This overrides all rules. It happens to be a scare commodity in us humans.
Does TL.net have good moderation? There is an easy way to judge this in any forum: the success and growth of any forum.
Also, I would like people to know that the LAST post someone says does not determine whether he gets banned or not -- it is the overall posting pattern. We look at all the previous posts of the guy before we ban him. RARELY will ONE post get somebody banned -- it is a cumulative process.
Yes people, making shitty posts is now a bannable offense~!
Anyways, I have a question: Say you had some strikes on your paper, could you tell us? via PM, maybe? like "strike one - refer to this thread to keep your posts from being shitty"Or are you just going to keep it as a mental note?
We do have to realise that this is not 'Teamliquid's shop for the mentally handicapped'. It's not hard to post quality posts 90% of the time. It's not hard to properly type out a proper post!
This is an internet forum about starcraft. Certainly admins have a right to moderate their forum as they wish, and if they want TL.net to have substantive discussion they can try. And if the posters don't like that, they can leave or get banned. But I don't want this forum to become pretentious. In the grand scheme of things (and the not so grand) video games are worthless, broodwar is worthless, and this whole forum is worthless. The only thing it's good for is a little enjoyment and relaxation for posters. Don't forget that.
What about people like me? I'm just now trying to get good enough at StarCraft to be able to post here effectively, and add some quality information, but I really stink.
Just because I'm a total noob and don't post that often (well, is this post #2?), will I be getting banned? Is this a general cleanup of low posters too? Do you ever clean out inactive members?

being a newbie isn't bannable, of course I mean you should probably refrain from giving advice in the strategy forum when you're not actually good at sc, but you could still be a valuable contributor in the general forum for example
low posters don't get banned because they are low posters, but they are given considerably less leeway than forum veterans, which is very reasonable I think
as far as I know inactive accounts never get deleted

however, if you discover a completely new and badass strat, say like reaver/sair, then you should post about it. or that maxing at 12 minutes is the best way to win pvt.
I'm not good enough or dumb enough to make either of the above statements, however, I am sure that that either one of those strategies would defeat me.

only the first one was a strat =p. someone new thought he discovered it, despite it being around for a while. the second was another newbie just...well...beinga newbie. but no worries, just lurk around and youll get the hang of how things work and geta feel for how the game is played

Redemption is for the fortunate, use it while you still can or join the kitty in its fate.
I don't think this is a good way to do this. There will ALWAYS be people who just type "lol" in 90% of their posts, and this rule won't change that. Only thing that will happen is either that those people stop posting or that they continue lolling and get bannzored. I think this is trying too hard and in a wrong way to make this some sort of competition and taking away the nice social atmosphere.
There's an implied rule in like..forum etiquette I guess, but it seems like a few people don't follow it which is a huge pet peeve of mine.
When you create a topic, usually if it's a topic where you're specifically asking for help or advice or comments, you should be attentive to that topic and not let it run for days without replying to it. It's just generally bad form to have people who are trying to help you waiting for your answer (if they have pertinent questions), or to shrug a lot of them off or whatnot.
lol this is the first time i've read the original post i think.
it mentioned something about creative flaming; and then referenced a flame brood posted. was indeed a good flame, but totally uncalled for. I was thinking about bringing back the thread to come to Hollow's rescue; but thought i should vent here instead.
people are fucked up when it comes to handicapped people. they are so fucking skewed on their ideas of respect, and passionate about such ideas. it's very depressing.

Hmm, I'm honestly lost when you're talking about handicapped people. At first, I assumed religious and sexual orientation, but you probably have something else in mind?

did you read the post i was referring to?
People slammed Hollow for sharing a video where some mentally handicapped people were grooving to some Heavy Metal. It was an awesome pleasure to see them enjoy an experience that under normal circumstances would never be able.
Hollow tried to explain that - and people just kept flaming him for being an insensitive prick! It was disgusting. If watching that video doesn't make someone think fondly of it, that's their problem; they should keep it to themselves and forgo puking such ignorance over all of us that do.
Mora, it's great that you interpreted that video in such a way, but i highly doubt that Hollow intended that video to generate your type of response.
regardless of what he said or how he justified it later, that video was posted with the intention of getting laughs and jokes. he even said "there's nothing wrong with laughing at such a situation" and that everyone was taking it too seriously.
and in general spirit videos like that posted for an internet forum, you really think his intention was to show how beautiful handicapped people were when they were enjoying themselves? it was posted 100% to generate some cheap laughs at their expense, and he deservedly got flamed for that.

No, that means you laugh at cripples. The only explanation is that you're a horrible person. Sorry.

"Awesome party" "So fucking metal!" "I think they found themselves a new singer"
That's his first post. Does that sound like genuine sentiment or mocking sarcasm? Everything else was just him backpedaling after he realized what a dick he looked like.

Only if handicapped people actually acted like Timmy. Timmy is grossly exaggerated, so no it doesn't necessarily mean you're laughing at handicapped people in this case. It only means the creaters of south park are horrible people!
hot_bid and Brood, i see your guys' point, and can understand why you'd feel that way.
However, i am not as certain as you guys are in regards to his motivations. If normal people were dancing like that, they'd be laughed at. I don't consider myself depreciating the handicapped despite the fact that i'd be laughing at them - people who dance like that are funny, regardless of whether they are handicapped or not. It does not belittle in anyway the fact that i'm genuinely happy to see them having a good time, experiencing their own metal concert when they most likely would never be allowed to attend one.
To censor such laughter is to say "Wait!, do not Laugh! It is not nice to laugh because their existence is tragic!". If i broke my legs and ended up in a wheel chair, i would not want people to stop making wheel chair jokes. I am homosexual, and would never dare begrudge others making gay jokes. To be any different is to say that i (or them) are in need of your pity; i can not speak for them, but i am in no need of it.
Maybe Hollow was back pedaling. I guess i just did not see it that way since i laugh at handicapped people all the time, despite having the utmost respect for them.
I do apologize for coming across as harshly as i did though - it was uncalled for.
