I really hope Nigel Short is the commentator. He provides the best commentary imo with deep analysis and great sense of humor.

I think the official commentators are going to be Lawrence Trent (great sense of humor as well, imo) and Susan Polgar.

edit: my bad, this is wrong [later edits: apparently not!], I took it from a site which apparently confused the already finished chess world cup and the chess championship. Trent and Polgar commentated the world cup.

second edit: actually, Trent tweeted the following on the 4th of November:

Lawrence Trent ‏@LawrenceTrentIM 4 Nov
Extremely excited and honoured to be going to Chennai as commentator for Anand-Carlsen, for me the biggest WcH match since Fischer-Spassky.

third edit: and on her page, Susan Polgar says she is going to be commentating... Looks like Polgar & Trent was right all along!

On the official site they say it's IM Aman Hambleton, IM Tania Sachdev, and GM Vidit Gujrathi.
I don't know these guys.

Anyone who's interested can watch the coverage live on the ICC (Internet Chess Club). They usually have the best commentary for all the major chess events, as well as daily chess videos, and you can sign up for a free 1-month trial.

Lawrence Trent is ok but when he has a strong grossmaister besides him. Recently there was event where Susan Polgar was commentating and I think she did pretty good job.

I hope this is not the case, because we need really strong GMs to commentate the games.

I think there are going to be several sites/organizations covering this with their own commentators, you just pick whichever you prefer.

It's interesting that Daniel King and Yasser Seirawan will be doing commentary on both Playchess and ICC. But yeah, there will be lots of ways to watch, I just recommend the free trial of ICC because it comes with so many other benefits. Also David Smerdon is my favorite commentator.

The first 2 days are going to be completely free on ICC in any case, for anyone who might have used up their trial.

I wonder why they never get Kasparov as a commentator.
No one can match his analysis and his love for the game.

At least Tania Sachdev seems to be pretty hot...

So I'm completely new to this watching competitive chess thing, and I poked around a bit. Is there actually going to be video of this event? Are the broadcasts pretty polished with showing the board and commentators and such? Will there be VODs available since I'm in the EST timezone and probably won't wake up for it with all the BlizzCon watching I need to do this weekend? I am not that good at chess but I like it, and this match has me intrigued.

Thank you in advance for answering all my noob questions.

The way it usually works is different chess sites and servers run their separate broadcasts. These broadcasts mostly don't show any live video from the venue. There's also going to be an official stream which I assume will show live video, shots of the players, etc., but the casting team seems to be made up of 2 IMs and a GM I've never heard of. That doesn't mean that it has to be bad, but it's a little odd. The candidates tournament for instance had Nigel Short on the official live stream, a very strong and famous GM.

There were vods for the candidates tournament, but I don't know how the official stream will work for this one. There will definitely be vods for the broadcast of ICC (Internet Chess Club, where most strong GMs play) though and you should be able to access them for free if you activate your 1 month free trial. No live video in that broadcast though.

As for the broadcasts being polished... they might be since this WC match is a huge deal for the chess world, but usually they're not. Competitive chess doesn't really cater to new viewers, the general idea being that if you're crazy enough to watch live chess, you won't care about polished presentation anyway. :p

It seems that Carlsen demanded to add a clause in the regulations that permits the championship to be postponed if a player gets ill.
In addition, he brought his own chef...

So how do you go on about understanding all the high level play that's gonna happen at the WC as a newbie?

Seems like it's gonna be quite fun but so many games ~~
You must gather your party before venturing forth.
